problem might be even worse. if you know me you know that i love reality tv. especially shows like this. >> i'm not convinced it is all kosher. i'm soirl. what just happened? kat: the guy you saw starred in hit show love is blind, he says that experience was awful. that it was long hours, low pay, and he struggled to find work since he left the show. and now he's even filed a lawsuit. joining me now is former reality tv star nick thompson hello, nick. >> hi kat thanks for having me on. kat: of course so i watch this show. [laughter] i never really miss much reality tv i remember it was a wild thing so you're saying you basically married someone that you knew ten weeks ultimately made $10,000 and now struggling to find work. can you talk to me a little bit about that? >> yeah so whole process of the show goes about seven weeks and then you do an additional few

weeks after the alter which is follow-up show that kind of catches up with you about a year later. i from a job perspective i have had opportunities and this has become a point of conversation sometimes with hr sometimes with -- management because in my line of work i've been a director and vp of marketing i have to talk to customers, and you know some express concerns about that and being a i believe to pivot a conversation back to business. kat: if i had a camera on me all of the time i don't know if i would come off looking i don't know if any of us would. i don't know this and i'm sure no one does because they weren't there what was a typical day of filming love is blind like? >> it is a pretty torturous process you're isolated in your hotel room few days before leaving without access to food and water without any opportunity to leave your rule without permission because you don't have a key or id you don't have -- >> no food and water? >> no.

not at your discretion unless you wanted to drink out of the silk sink which that wasn't that kind of hotel. kat: well what do you wish people knew about reality tv that they don't know? >> i think people think that you get followed around by a camera crew for a few hours a day and then that's basically what it is. but that's not the case when we were filming, in the pods we were doing 18, 20 hour days we were inside. we didn't have limited access to food an water you didn't know what time it was or really what day it was. and you've just been micked up non stop and filmed for 18 to 20 hours on most days. kat: but plenty of alcohol right? >> i -- have heard stories that alcohol intercepts water requests in some shows so unlimited alcohol i would say i don't think we ever asked for that. >> qhald you say is the solution here or is there one? >> well i think there are several solutions that should be taken into consideration and plenty of levers to pull. one of the most important things

i think needs to happen is we need to have some regulation and recognize that people that are in unscripted shows are actually workers. you're working to make money for somebody else and that happens to be a jiepght production company or streaming service like netflix and mine and i believe that somehow they have escaped labor practices and labor laws over the years. and there is no representation like there is for scripted cast members, or writers as we're seeing with the strikes with the wga and sag-aftra right now i think change needs to come from all of us and we need to get basic recognition of worker and labor rights in the industry immediately. kat: quickly what about the love life now are you single? >> i'm still single. yes. [laughter] been quite busy. kat: okay all right well you know that's interesting first time i've heard that i don't know how well i would do plenty of booze camera hooked up to me and i don't know what time it is so -- >> i don't know who would thrive in that situation.

social media interferes with daily activities. which sounds like problem but what's the solution? the rehab? i don't know. doctor nicole you are an expert -- >> you knew there was a reason. >> because you don't do drugs i don't think but you prescribe drugs. is this a drug? >> yeah. you know what listen you and i over many years have talked about the apparels of addiction and when you have facets of alcohol, drugs and then you also have gamble, sex and now social media. you know, are they the same and the truth is yeah they kind of are. they all elicit same responses in the brain it is a dopamine response yeah, obviously, if you take stem lie such as cocaine, heroin something else that physically stimulates receptors in your brain but guess what when you're looking at social media playing video games, your visual cortex is looking at

images and same still la story reaction as if you were to take a drug like an injection or something else. these addictions are as serious, and the consequences are as dire. so i think we need to be paying very close attention i have three children. and i can see the effects of social media electronics, and i think we need to pay as much attention as social media addiction video game addiction as we do with say opioid epidemic. >> can you think of any differences between social media and drugs? >> i would say that -- [laughter] social media is worse. with druggings you have to hit somebody with your car before strangers tell you that you're a piece of garbage and -- kat: that's true. >> i was reading one thing to do is keep your hands busy because you're not holding your phone you're missing -- my hands are busy because of what i'm looking at on my phone same thing. food and sex are same addiction alcohol and drugs are close

because you can't be ab sent from food or sex but this feels worse. when i was getting high i didn't give myself hours of fixes a day this is 11, 12 hours and arguing politics it is stupid. >> that is a great point average two and a half on social media there's no drug that takes that long to do. >> i agree i think social media is worse and not trying to, you know, like lighten the seriousness of addiction issues and i'm sober and clean person and i think that opioid epidemic is like such a huge issue in the country. but social media is possibly worse especially for teenagers. it is making they will suicidal and it's ruining the in the moment -- times it is just not -- >> i'm on my phone sometimes without realizing how i got there and like who is this person and oh they have a baby oh what am i doing with my life? >> you're driving -- >> if you think social media is bad for us let's hand over all

don't know. do you have any patients ever told you they love you? >> all of the time well i don't to be the debbie downer on saturday night show -- >> i literally tell people they have cancer. every day -- but i'm like good news -- we've caught it so early that -- we're going to take care of you so then there's a hugging moment and there's a -- they trust you to save their life that is a different kind of love and not a funny kind of love but a visceral love because you're trusted with someone's life which is also not so indifferent if you're dating someone, and you find yourself feeling romanically vulnerable to them and they say i love you that is another state of vulnerabilitity i'm putting myself out there to you imght to spend my life to you and they can reject you and that is very upsetting i mean that can -- kat: sure can. it sure can. afraid of ten things that you don't know exist yet so you're like everything i wanted to be when i was your age and do all of the kids think you're supercool? >> well i think so. most of my friends and everyone is also supporting me now because of where i've gotten. kat: how did you first get into skateboarding what made you decide to s.t.a.r.t. skateboarding? >> i got into it because i surf a lot and then one year, ocean got too cold so i started skateboarding. how did it feel to complete that 720 there? >> it felt really amazing because it is probably my dream trick and i am so happy i landed it especially at the comp because it was cool with all of the crowd there. >> yeah i truly can't imagine that what is next are you trying to go to the olympics?

>> yeah. iemg trying to get to the olympics and my next comp is in rome which is olympic qualifier and world championship and i'll be going pretty soon in the comps in october i think. >> now for when you land that 720 did you do anything pun to celebrate? >> not really. i just hung out with my friends and just skated after. [laughter] >> that's great do you have your medal with you do you want to show me so i would love to see one. >> these are my x games medals. >> that is so cool i'm not even good at the video game that is so cool. all right do you have any other advice for me at all? >> if you want to get better, probably just keep skating and don't give up, and i've started to get good when i did lessons at level up, and if you go get lessons you'll definitely get
