and yeah, we have a truck here stuck. >> sandra: tropical storm hilary drenching southern california with catastrophic flooding, first of its kind to hit that region in 84 years. forecasters warning of mudslides, high winds, power outages and even tornadoes. hello, welcome, everyone. >> john: good to have you back, sandra. john roberts in washington. this is "america reports." hilary could dump year's worth of rain. flash flooding left drivers stranded. >> sandra: and while the worst of the heavy rains may be over, clean-up efforts are just beginning. the system is forecast to move all the way into idaho as soon as this afternoon. fox weather nicole valdez is live in palm springs how things are shaping up there. what are the conditions where you are?

>> sandra, the mess you see behind me, one example of how intense of flooding we got here across the coachella valley. this bridge moves over one of the many washes that tends to fill up when you have even a half inch of rain. you look at it now, it's clear it was once a raging river. you can tell just how high the water got at one point during the most intense portion of what was tropical storm hilary sunday afternoon into the evening hours, one of the many reasons why city officials went and gone ahead and shut down so many of these major roads trying to keep drivers from getting swept away in those rushing waters. we'll show you some video of what we are seeing today, other roads still seeing as some significant strong currents moving through, so we have a lot of roads that are still shut down today despite most of the

rain having moved out of the southern california area. but one area that is going to continue to cause some major problems is the i-10, it's still shut down in both directions around cathedral city and you'll see here just a massive traffic jam around the palm springs area. we know a handful of people had to be rescued. california national guard helping do that with the help of first responders in each city, all the way from palm desert, as far another as ventura county as the floodwater was absolutely no joke. several drivers we saw stranded by driving through had to be rescued or abandon their cars and walk off trudging through some cases knee deep water. the threat, unfortunately, not over. thankfully we are starting to see some of that water recede, but these roads will stay closed, including the i-10 for what could be the remainder of the day as they try to clean up the caked on mud and debris you

have you back, and see me, the head shake. i think it's going to be great. the american people have made clear in polls they don't want to hear what's wrong with trump or attacks in that regard, they want to know what the individuals are for themselves. they speak about the issues, move themselves forward and i would have preferred president trump to be there. i still do. because that is the spectrum of what the republican party stands for. but since and if he's not, at least these individuals now can really talk to the american people, let them know what issues matter, where they stand, how they are different from the democrats, how they are different from biden and i think the american people will see the depth of the talent bench. president trump will see that and he will debate at one point or another. but good for the country. >> sandra: make or break moments for the candidates. >> no doubt.

she's been to europe or has not been to europe, what she started to crash. so i think the first thing is one of the problems is they are not admitting what the problem is, her approach. she in fact is only above water with democrats and black americans. she is collapsing with hispanics, 60% don't approve of her, this is a recent l.a. times poll from last month, and independent, 62% disapproval rate. interesting what they think they are going to move people on. when we think about the stock market with getting dividends, it's eaten up and more when you pay 70% more for eggs and 3, $4 for gas when you used to pay $2. when you have proteins, cereal up 25%. you might have a stock market dynamic but it's being consumed by mortgage increases, rent increases, energy, heading into winter. >> fair enough all of that, and just now you are seeing the mainstream media folks pressing

california. catastrophic flooding there is causing situations like this. obviously you can see folks wading through the muddy mess there and this blue vehicle now stuck, appears the driver is still trying to maneuver the vehicle, and somebody is attempting to get it out. the a.p. bringing us this video. someone with a camera behind it, but just obviously catastrophic flooding, mudslides sweeping through the state and pictures like this in our newsroom. that is cathedral city, california, we are told. >> john: all the rain causing a lot of problems, they don't usually get rain like that. hunter biden's legal team reportedly tried to drag president biden directly into their defense efforts warning that they would call on the president to appear as a witness to defend his son against criminal charges. shocking legal strategy revealed

in a letter to prosecutors. so here is part of what chris clark said in a letter when he said well, listen, if you bring charges on the gun charge against my client, hunter biden, we have to put his dad on the stand to testify on his behalf. this of all cases justfies neither the spectacle of a sitting president testifying at a criminal trial nor the potential for a resulting constitutional crisis. clark was saying look, if we put the president on the stand he's going to be at odds with his own justice department, that will precipitate a constitutional crisis. is that how the sweetheart plea deal got crafted? >> well, you know, this is really kind of a hands down case for special treatment in this hunter biden case. i think it shows you the confidence and the arrogance that the hunter biden defense

team had in dealing with the justice department, of course under the presidency of hunter biden's father joe biden. they felt confident they could actually threaten the justice department and apparently it was working. we have had other reports that the justice department was ready to let hunter biden off scott free, no charges, no nothing, and it was only after a couple of irs whistleblowers emerged speaking to house republicans, getting their story out, accusing the justice department of special treatment in the hunter biden case that the justice department then began to back up and ended up charging, two minor charges against hunter biden. >> john: that to which you refer is an article in the "new york times" looked a the correspondence between weiss and his attorneys, earlier mr. weiss appeared willing to forego any

prosecution of mr. biden, hunter, at all, and his office came close to agreeing to end the investigation without requiring a guilty plea on any charges. but the correspondence reveals that his position relayed through his staff changed in the spring around the time a pair of irs officials on the case accused the justice department of hamstringing the investigation. mr. weiss suddenly demanded that mr. biden plead guilty to committing tax offenses. looked like he was ready to let the whole thing go. the question i have, now that this correspondence between clark and weiss has appeared and would threaten to put joe biden on the stand, if weiss now brings criminal charges against hunter biden as special counsel, could that precipitate the same problem? >> well, it conceivably could. i mean, hunter biden's father is the president of the you state, hunter biden would be the

defendant. he would have the ability to call people to testify in his defense who would be cross examined by members of the justice department working for the witness as president of the united states. it would be a weird situation. there's no doubt about that. and i should add one more thing, in addition to not charging hunter biden for the tax charges, the defense team still believed they could get this promise from the justice department, never to prosecute hunter biden again for anything. so the -- hunter biden team was really working from a position of great confidence thinking they could pretty much push the justice department around. >> john: last week, byron, i suggested that pigs do indeed fly. when the "washington post" published an editorial said the plea deal did look like a sweetheart deal, but must have

been a whole flock of pigs flying around d.c., cnn is talking about donald trump's claim during the debate that hunter biden made millions from china and joe biden shot it down. listen here. >> trump was right. i mean -- he did make a fortune from china and joe biden was wrong. i don't know that he was lying about it, he might not have been told by hunter but this blind spot is a problem. >> john: trump was right, joe biden was wrong. what's happening with the mainstream media? >> well, the including is inescapable as far as some of the sources of some of hunter biden's money. they were listed in the plea agreement that ended up not going through, the one that the justice department would not release until days after it happened. still you saw the statement of facts in the plea agreement showing that hunter biden had gotten a lot of money from those foreign countries. so it's really hard to deny any longer that hunter biden was

hawaii, he will thank first responders and also meet with survivors of this wildfire but again, he will hear possible causes but no cause of this fire has yet to be determined. a report four years ago from hawaii electric found the company needed to spend a little more money on maintenance of its equipment to stop it from sparking. again, no fire cause has been determined. still, a clean energy journalist went farther. listen. >> the main event, the main event is that the hawaiian electric company spent less than a quarter million dollars a year maintaining that area around those electrical wires while they were spending tens or hundreds of million on renewables over the last couple of decades. >> republican representative says when california, when they eliminated the brush on did not remove the brush around some of these poles, they had problems there. >> it's the climate, the climate

he was supposed to come back to the white house on thursday, he's now coming back on saturday. >> john: we'll watch for the pictures over the next little while. thank you. >> sandra: president biden is promoting electric vehicle tax credits as part of his goal to phase out gas-powered cars, but are americans buying it? a new survey finding only 29% of people say they were likely to consider owning an e.v. under biden's tax credit incentive. kevin o'leary, chairman of o'leary ventures. great to see you, thanks for joining us today. you have proven yourself as a great judge of business ideas and consumer thinking. so, why are americans just not buying it when it comes to electric vehicles? >> there's two new narratives into the e.v. market. first of all, functionality. obviously e.v.s are terrific if you live in a very dense metropolitan area with easy access to charging stations and

even a parking place that has chargers. where it's not working is in rural america because if you are driving over 200 miles a week, this starts to become a huge problem, and clearly people, you know, there's millions that don't live inside of cities, are realizing e.v.s are not ready for primetime rural. but the other narrative that's problematic for the entire e.v. market, and this is in every jurisdiction, whether it's domestic or international, e.v. power, in other words, the cost of filling up your battery is not free anymore. so if you bought a tesla, part of the deal was whenever you plugged into the superstation it was free. that's not the case any more. where is the power coming from, people ask every day. it comes from burning gas and hydro carbons and even coal and so the narrative between e.v.

and green is falling apart a little bit. >> sandra: that's fair enough and when we ask people about driving these e.v.s or consider buying them, some of what we have heard. >> thank goodness i have back-up gasoline vehicles as well. >> with the heat wave everybody is cranking up the a.c., charging an electric vehicle could be a challenge. >> 2, 1 is electric and one is gas and i prefer the electric vehicle. >> hopefully next decade, you know, batteries will be better. >> sandra: hopefully in the next decade batteries will be better. remember what the ambitions of the president are to make two-thirds of new vehicle sales electric by the year 2032, less than ten years from now. and plans to build a network of 500,000 charges across the country, but where do you get the electricity to fill the charges and charge the vehicles

and this right now is the average cost of an electric vehicle. this is as late as june. $53,438. put it up against a gas-powered vehicles, obviously it's more expensive and you have to ask yourself, even those who want the e.v., maybe they cannot afford it yet, kevin. >> that's right. the prices have not yet come down, but clearly, and this is a reality for every administration in every state. the move to green is going to take probably four times longer than people envision. maybe even five times. you can't do this in ten years. it's not even possible or realistic. the infrastructure for power itself needs to be upgraded. and that requires every source of energy we could possibly get our hands on because wind and solar simply not enough. and the grid itself, part of the infrastructure spending has to be upgraded.

there's so much hindrance towards this vision, and i'm not against green at all. i'm just saying everybody should take a deep breath and become realistic on the timetable. just not going to happen in ten years. not a chance in hell. >> sandra: and we all have to take notice of the fact this puts the government, the u.s. government in the business of picking winners and losers and we have seen a lot of these companies that supplied the parts for the manufacturing of the electric vehicles that you have heard the president talk about, they are not doing well. they are having to in some cases close their doors or file for bankruptcy and then the big vehicle makers themselves are reporting sales way down of these e.v.s. they ramped up production based on expected demand and it's not coming to fruition. quick final thought, kevin. >> all of the above. it goes right to my narrative and many other people saying the same thing, take your vision,

rushing with water, so we really need people to be careful and not be foolish and try to get in the water. it is very dangerous and please do not drive through the water because even a small and the of water can wash away the car and a person. >> john: one of the most dramatic scenes, this mud flow through a canyon, and i guess a lot of trees had fallen down over the years and they were all being pushed by this massive wall of mud and see the mud splashing on to the roadway. at about the same time all of this was happening throughout central and southern california, also a 5.1 earthquake, mostly felt in los angeles, mayor, did you feel it there, a couple of children sleeping in a bed with the dog at their feet and everything shaking, the parents come in and grab the kids and take them out of the bed. i assume they probably got out of the house in case something bad were to happen. it did not, but did you feel the
