in georgia and that will be -- take over the news cycle. >> ainsley: he supported donald trump and didn't say anything negative about donald trump. a lot of people like nikki haley because she was realistic on debt and abortion issue and realistic about trump. we'll see where it goes. bye, everyone. thanks for watching. >> bill: thank you, guys, good morning. it is morning in milwaukee. the first debated no shortage of fireworks last night. the economy and crime high on the docket. one of the biggest stars might have been the former south carolina governor nikki haley. she will be live in dana and me in a matter of moments in wisconsin. breaking news on foreign policy. one thing we'll be talking to governor haley about is the one big story out of russia breaking now. freedom denied for an american held in one of putin's jails. a moscow court extended the
6:01 am
arrest of evan gershkovitch for at least three more months. a return to the cold war echo even louder. hello back in wisconsin. what a night and morning now. >> dana: i'm dana perino. this is "america's newsroom." it was interesting to have millions of people watch the debate last night and so many different takes. you will want to hear from our guest this morning, nikki haley up in a moment. evan gershkovitch was arrested in march on espionage charges in four decades an american journalist was designed against spying against russia. they have denied the allegations and the u.s. government has declared him wrongfully detained. >> bill: greg palkot picks up the story from there live in london and greg, what have we learned? >> bill and dana, sadly there is no end in sight for "wall street journal" reporter evan gershkovitch. he was brought by van to the courthouse today related to the
6:02 am
tough and brutal prison where he has been held since march after being arrested on alleged espionage charges. it was a closed hearing. all journalists got was f glimpse of him going into the building. u.s. ambassador to russia has met with him three times and he appears in good health despite it all. today's pre-trial extension means gershkovitch will be in jail for at least eight months before he is put on trial. that could be extended to a year or longer. several appeals for him to be released have been denied. trials can take another year. in a statement the "wall street journal" said we're deeply disappointed he continues to be arbitrarily and wrongfully detained for doing his job as a journalist. the baseless accusations against him are categorically false and we continue to push for his immediate release. journalism is not a crime. experts say it could all come down to what the man in charge, vladimir putin, thinks or does.
6:03 am
if he wants to release gershkovitch or swap him for someone he could at any time. the general rule is, though, guys, a verdict has to be announced before any deal is done. some say there might not be any resolution to this until after next year's u.s. presidential elections. or perhaps when the ongoing war in ukraine is resolved. whichever comes first. back to you guys. >> bill: wow, greg, thanks, greg palkot on the breaking news in london. >> least well-known person on the stage going into this thing. people are getting to know us. that's a good thing. >> the reason i'm in the race is the country is in a lot of trouble. >> 100% of my time is talking about our vision for the future and my accomplishment. a lot of people that said a lot of things. i'm the only one that has delivered on all these issues. >> dana: the dust is settling from the first republican debates. candidates are hoping for a bump in the polls.
6:04 am
alexis mcadams is here in milwaukee with more. hi. >> hi, dana. good morning from wisconsin. voters are waking up and reacting to seeing what the candidates talked about on the debate stage. do they connect with voters on the main issues? that will have to be seen as they go through the highlights. the candidates had big moments and pretty big audiences. one of the big topics voters wanted the hear about was the economy as most people we talked to in wisconsin say they can't afford the basics. watch. >> we must reverse bidenomics so that middle class fame lilies h a chance to succeed. if you are working hard and can't afford groceries or a car. >> i'm worried the american dream will not exist for our sons and their generation unless we do something about it. >> the candidates were sparring from education, crime, foreign poll cismd abortion all of the candidates on the stage
6:05 am
identified as pro-life but differed on the federal ban. >> don't make women feel like they have to decide on this issue when you know we don't have 60 senate votes in the house. >> 70% of the american people support legislation to ban abortion after a baby is capable. >> when you look at the fox news polls no secret another top issue is border security across the country. voters are seeing the effects of open borders in their cities. >> the most pressing need of the american people from a national security standpoint is our southern border. >> former new jersey governor and prosecutor chris christie said he would be the toughest on crime standing on the stage in milwaukee where they also have had lots of shootings in the past few months. listen. >> the problem is that these prosecutors in these localities in the states are refusing to do their job and to arrest violent
6:06 am
criminals. >> all of those fiery exchanges and back and forth. who was able to deliver their message to the american people? did anyone have a break-out moment or any people changing their mind about the candidates? we'll have to wait and see. >> dana: thank you, great job this week. appreciate it. >> this is exactly why margaret thatcher said if you want something said ask a man. if you want something done, ask a woman. >> bill: that received quite the reaction in the arena last night and former south carolina governor nikki haley is with us live this morning. don't know if you went to sleep or not. >> there is time to sleep later. >> bill: we'll sleep when we're dead. you have been tweeting for a couple of days. hit me with your best shot. how did you think it went? >> it's great. when you have the candidates up there so the american people can see what the options are it's a great moment, the start of the election season, the first
6:07 am
debate. now going into labor day it's off to the races. >> dana: one of the things we led the show with is this foreign policy issue and one that is very important for the gershkovitch and the "wall street journal" the freedom of journalists and democracy. evan gershkovitch is being held by the russians, russia had another moment yesterday when it went after one of its own. i'm wondering if you were to be president how would you try to get evan gershkovitch back? >> you have to do it with strength. putin right now feels like we're so weak. that's what we talked about at the debate last night. you can't say what -- you can't do what biden did by allowing ransom on americans' heads. it makes them take more people. we have to protect our journalists and our americans. the way you do that is make sure you have the backs of ukraine.
6:08 am
we make sure we defend taiwan so china never makes a move and let the world know there will be hell to pay if you take one of our americans. >> bill: ramaswamy's position on the ukraine war as stated a week ago you stop the war now and draw the lines where they are and negotiate a peace. i'm not even suggesting that is possible. that's just what he has said. this is the moment the two of you went at it on foreign policy. >> you are choosing a murderer over an american country. >> wish you well on -- >> i'm not on the boards there. you want to defund israel? you want to -- you want to go and give ukraine to russia? you would make america less. you have no foreign policy experience and it shows. it shows. [cheers and applause] >> bill: you were ready for that
6:09 am
moment. did you expect it? >> no, i don't expect someone running for president to have that much of a lack of foreign policy. the idea that we would defund israel, the idea that you just allow putin to take ukraine knowing that will lead to a world war because put-in said poland and the baltics are neck. you would let taiwan get et en by china. that's not a strong america. our enemies know that. what we saw last night was someone who thinks they know foreign policy. you clearly don't know putin if you think you will give him ukraine and that he will be okay with that and go away. this is a man who just killed prigozhin last night. a man who when i was at the u.n. russian ambassador dropped dead. this is a man who is an enemy, thug and dictator. you never take the side of an enemy over a pro-american free-loving country. that's what vivek did last night.
6:10 am
we need a strong america. the only way you have a strong america is with a strong president. >> dana: one of the issues brought up is abortion. campaigns can deal in fantasy. you repeatedly said and saw it in the clip that alexis played you have to deal with reality as well. when you are governing you kept saying we don't have 60 votes in the senate to do that. is that too specific for the public at large to understand? what about this idea you can find a consensus on a federal level even though dobbs decision said leave it to the states. >> the american people are smart and i think the american people a lot of them don't realize it takes 60 senate votes. i'm unapologetically pro-life. it is great that is no longer in the hands of unelected justices and in the hands of the people. that's where we want it. when it comes to a federal bill, let's be honest with the american people. if you don't have a majority of the house and 60 senate votes nothing is going to happen.
6:11 am
we may have 45 pro-life senators. the idea that a republican president can ban all abortions is no more right than a democrat president banning all these state laws. we need to humanize this issue. it is personal for every woman and every man. i am pro-life. i don't judge anyone who is pro-choice nor do i want them to judge me for being pro-life. let's humanize the situation and stop demonizing it. >> bill: the decision that was made in 1973 was wrongly made at the u.s. supreme court. that's exactly what the sup reams just did. allowing the states to decide. in your home state of south carolina yesterday the state supreme court ruled that abortion at six weeks is legal in south carolina. >> people in south carolina decided it. it's in the hands of the people. what they do in south carolina will be different than california. i would much rather have laws
6:12 am
decided by the people on the ground than by d.c. when it comes to a federal law, i think we could find consensus. let's say i think all americans do agree we shouldn't have late-term abortions. they do agree we should encourage more adoptions and good quality atoppings and doctors and nurses who don't believe in abortions shouldn't have to perform them and contraception should be acceptable and no state law should say any woman who has had an abortion should go to jail or get the death penalty. that's where we need to be. we have to be honest with the american people. but we also have to be realistic. i want to save as many babies as we can and support as many moms as we can. >> dana: one other thing in here. cedric richmond was at the dnc press conference. he said this about whether biden would debate the republican nominee in the future. watch? >> will president biden commit
6:13 am
to debating in the generals? >> we have not had a conversation about that at all. i'm sure one day we will. it is not today. i don't have any news on that. but we will continue to govern because vice president harris and president biden have a job to do and they take it serious. so when we have news on that we'll let you know. >> dana: how is that not a simple yes of course. >> unbelievable. biden's camp said they were worried about my winning the primary. he has to debate just like trump needs to debate. if you want the american people's support you have to show up. you can't just be absent. >> bill: on the donald trump point, you said republicans cannot win with him again. essentially saying you cannot get to a majority in america. did you make the demarcation point for yourself, anyway, or are you trying to make it for the rest of the republican party with the former president?
6:14 am
>> i was proud to serve in his administration and agree with most of his policies. but we have to be honest again. he will spend more time in a courtroom than he will spend on the campaign trail. we cannot allow a president kamala harris. we have to win that general election. in order to do that, you can't do that with someone who literally 3/4 of the american people don't want to see biden and trump run again. the majority of americans he is the most disliked politician in all of america. that's a reality. that person can't win a general election and we can't afford to have kamala harris become our president. >> bill: the debate continues. appreciate your time this morning. >> go to nikki haley.com and join us. >> dana: give our best to your husband. don't miss the second republican debate on fox business september 27th at the ronald reagan presidential library. >> bill: 14 past now. let's roll with this now. >> they're all designed to be
6:15 am
concealable and be able to bring into a school, hidden from parents. >> bill: as students go back to school police raising concerns over vape pens disguised. who makes them and the threat to children. >> dana: the debate an law and order took center stage in milwaukee. >> first thing i'll do is fire merrick garland. second thing i'll do fire christopher wray. we need lady justice to wear a blindfold. >> we're telling people the law don't apply to everybody. if you are working hard and can't afford groceries, a car or new home while hunter biden can make hundreds of thousands of dollars on lousy paintings, that is wrong.

6:26 am
the biggest problem with hang peddling business may have been his father, the president, thought it was fine. do you think that an inquiry can be opened up if there is not clear illegal activity? >> well, we know, dana, that the democrats, when they controlled the house in 2019, actually impeached, filed articles of impeachment against president trump under circumstances where they didn't have a crime, abuse of power can be a high crime and misdemeanor. here we are talking about the potential of high crimes and misdemeanors and bribery. a separate category for impeachment purposes. they have a basis to have an inquiry. where it goes from there, we'll have to see. >> bill: the house speaker kevin mccarthy this week talked about this. there is a legal question here, andy, and a political question. some people within the republican party of the house
6:27 am
don't want to go there. others clearly do. but mccarthy made the point the other day that if they pursue the inquiry, they can gain access to all kinds of bank records and paperwork and information. that's really where you have to go for this investigation, do you not? >> i agree with that, bill. what speaker mccarthy is trying to do is crystallize an issue which is that the white house and the biden administration and the agencies connected to the administration are withholding information from congress. and what he needs to do in terms of the inquiry, which doesn't obligate them to do anything other than continue their investigation, is stand on the principle that the executive branch can't withhold this information from congress. that ought to be something that every republican can agree with, even if they don't want to go down the impeachment road, which is a long way from now.
6:28 am
>> dana: time this out for us, andy. an inquiry could last however long, investigation, impeachment process if that were to come to that could take x amount of time and now you are right, smack dab in the middle of the 2024 election? >> you know, dana, when you mentioned before that the next debate was coming up in a month i was thinking the week after the next debate, trump's first big civil trial starts in new york. he could be on trial himself pretty much from october through next summer depending on how these cases cut. we keep talking about the four criminal cases. there are three civil trials coming up between october and the end of march. so i think there will be a lot of pressure from especially from trump supporters in the house that if the biden investigation is going anywhere there ought to be a parallel investigation with trump. a lot of pressure to say if
6:29 am
democrats are going to put trump through these paces, that the biden investigation will be ratcheted up. i think that's the way our politics works. >> bill: should be a hell of a campaign. andy, thank you. andy mccarthy with us. >> dana: great to see you. >> bill: thank you, andy.
