report card and seeing how bad it is and chronic absenteeism happening across the country the next president needs to focus on it. >> bill: he had an effective line on that and how small towns take care of each other. and it really was a lesson for a lot of people last night. effective nonetheless. that ends hour one. are you ready? hour two begins. >> dana: hit it. fox news alert top of the hour. three big stories now topping the news. mystery of the murder of a maryland mother remains on the loose and police warn he could strike again. her body was found in a wooded area in maryland after she went for a walk and didn't return. >> bill: prigozhin was among ten people killed in a plane crash yesterday according to state media out of moscow.

his death comes two months to the day since the failed rebellion against vladimir putin. >> dana: our wisconsin voter panel is back with what they thought about last night's debate. more on those stories throughout the hour. first let's get to this. >> we need to send joe biden back to his basement and reverse american decline. >> we also need to understand joe biden's bidenomics has led to the loss of $10,000 of spending power for the average family. >> dana: president biden far and away the top target of attacks during last night's republican primary debate. as the candidates took turns explaining to voters why they deserve to get this job. welcome to a new hour of "america's newsroom," i'm dana perino. >> bill: hello there. bill hemmer in the flesh. how did you score it last night? >> dana: i thought it was great. >> bill: maybe at the end of the hour we'll go ahead and put up

our cards. we had eight on the line last night running to be leader of the free world facing pointed questions on a wide range of hot-button topics. we're told president biden on vacation in a mansion on lake tahoe, california spent part of his evening tuned to fox news watching the showdown where his name and record came up as a frequent target. jacque heinrich has the story from lake tahoe as we begin a new hour. >> president biden has not issued a debate response but the vice president, kamala harris, did. she said no one on stage won the debate. instead americans got to see how much they stand to lose from extremist agenda. the biden campaign and dnc made clear they wanted to see gop primary hopefuls embrace trump's positions on abortion during the debate. the campaign blasted out five

emails while it was ongoing saying republicans' disastrous agenda. the climate crisis, republicans anti-abortion agenda. maga republicans have no solutions to address crime and they sided for putin on democracy. team biden, the massive advertising campaign underway now. biden was quick to seize on nikki haley blaming her own party for driving up spending. he tweeted the clip with the caption, what she said. >> you have ron desantis, tim scott, mike pence all voted to raise the debt and donald trump added $8 trillion to our debt. our kids are never going to forgive us for this. >> haley also broke from the top polling candidates in supporting continued ukraine aid, affirming climate change is real and saying while she is pro-life a federal abortion ban isn't what people want pointing to the

makeup of house and senate could upend planned democratic attacks like this. >> i think you saw how extreme the republican candidates are on this issue. how they were all trying to outbid each other. ban it at six week. >> there are only two mentions of hunter biden, which was likely a relief to the president's team. yesterday they could not answer how they planned to address criticism on that front. democrats, though, also appear to be playing into the rnc chairwoman's reported warning to trump. his absence last night could give president biden cover to opt out of an eventual debate with the ultimate gop nominee. they have so far declined to commit the president to debates in the general election, bill. >> bill: okay, jacque. >> any time you can have the candidates up so the american people can see what their options are is a great moment.

the start of the election season. the first debate. now going into labor day it's off to the races. >> dana: republican presidential candidate nikki haley last hour. it is off to the races with the political spin. a lot of it. give us an overall view of the first debate. >> the battle who can become donald trump's biggest challenger in the ply mary. nikki haley had the strongest performance on that stage in making that case. she has shown she has appeal with the more traditional republican voters. the classic conservatives. and she also has some sway with more trump-friendly voters. she made a really good moment against ramaswamy over foreign policy. that's a huge divide in this
7:06 am
republican field. she turned the crowd around. you could hear the crowd turning around when she challenged his inexperience on foreign policy. so look, haley, one debate came out on top. she may get momentum from her performance. >> bill: the play-in game. josh holmes said the other day normally in a debate you want to survive in advance. josh's point was you can't just survive in advance when you are down 40 points. you have to dominate. that's a question for you. do you think she dominated or just exceeded expectations? >> she lives to move to the next debate in simi valley next month. what haley, tim scott, any of the republicans on stage need to do is consolidate the 60% or so of republicans that may be willing to consider someone else other than trump as the nominee. and if you are mike bairns and chris christie you are in the anti-trump lane.
7:07 am
i don't know if that's enough to win the republican nomination. for haley, desantis, tim scott, they have that up side. >> dana: desantis. there was a lot of lead-up saying he wanted to say it is a two-person race between him and donald trump. was he effective in doing that last night? >> bill: i thought we would see more. he had a fine debate. talked about his conservative record in florida. he had his talking points prepared. he knew what he wanted to say. it was a fine performance but look, ron desantis was supposed to be at the center of the stage. supposed to be at the center of all the debates and dominating last night. i did not see that. there is only so much time left for the guy who is supposed to be the biggest trump challenger to make that argument to voters. >> dana: the other person at the center of the stage was vivek ramaswamy. i'm wondering -- i think he has momentum. a fresh face, outsider doing well in this republican -- the last 8 or 16 years.
7:08 am
eight years, the outsider does well. vivek ramaswamy, what can he do now to try to win over more people? because as guy benson was saying in his focus group last night there was interest in vivek but found him quite polarizing. >> vivek was the red bull. the desire to have someone who is an outsider. we've seen it in republican primaries. ben carson, herman kane. andrew yang on the democratic last time. a lot of younger voters like his message. ultimately he is running against trump. he sounded like his protege. i'm not sure what his message is to be the man and the guy who can -- >> bill: vivek was red bull. dana and i were going to score

it. a great night. i thought the first 45 minutes were excellent. all these candidates had pre-conceived ideas what they wanted to achieved. good comebacks. debating at a high level. after that i thought they got messy, unruly, disregarded the rules. i think the former vice president was guilty of that. it put the moderators in a much more difficult circumstance. i don't know how the viewers felt about the second half of that? >> i think you're right. voters don't like too many fights. they don't like candidates to go negative. sometimes the candidate that go negative hurt themselves even if they hurt someone else on the stage and if criticisms land. it feels like mike pence is running to be the person standing for what he believed in on january 6th. and there may have not be room for that in the republican party. him and christie are running in
7:10 am
the anti-trump space and that's not going to make up a majority of the republican voters this time around. >> dana: pence talked like he was talking in the past but he got in there. >> bill: desantis had a good line. let's go to california now. [gunfire] >> dana: wow. >> bill: that's the sound and the video of a shoot-out between police and a gunman at an historic biker bar in southern california last night. police saying the shooter killed three, injured six before he was gunned down by police. jeff paul has the fallout today in l.a. jeff, hello. >> we're learning according to the orange county sheriff's department the suspected shooter might have been retired law enforcement and also say

do the american people want to see a russian victory. they may have skepticism about the amount of money we're spending in ukraine but let's not give away the ukrainian's position and land. so i think his critics had a field day on foreign policy with vivek. i thought he was stronger on domestic policy but i think we have a long way to go in this debate. >> bill: on the topic itself it seems to me it's the beginning of a national conversation. which has taken us a long time to get there, by the way. if you take the wagner group out of this war in ukraine, does the battle change much, michael? >> i don't think so. the russians are dug in in the south. it will take the ukrainians a massive effort to begin to make more progress. they have had some tactical successes, some incremental gains but i think we need to train our fire on criticism here at the biden administration.
7:24 am
their go-slow approach has led to ukrainian situation that nears a stalemate at times. they are the ones that have truly held back the ukrainians. i think the ukrainians are fighting bravely and we need to give them a chance to win back their land and over time i think we'll get to a place, maybe in 2024 or early 2025, where the war could be settled down a little bit. but until then i think the ukrainians still need our assistance and certainly the assistance from the europeans. i thought desantis had a good line the europeans need to stand up as well. >> bill: the loss of life has been extraordinary already. michael allen, thank you for your time. to be continued. thank you, sir. >> we're auditioning to be the president of the united states. i'm not here to get in a food fight. i was more interested in talking directly to the people at home rather than some of the bickering that was back and

most. and that is my bottom line. as i said yesterday to have universal appeal to republicans, independents, undecided and disenchanted dems. i also want to know who is going to make this country the best it can be. >> dana: gerard, yesterday kellyanne conway loved this panel yesterday. she really liked what you had to say when you said in your mind the top five were all ones who could beat president biden in 2024. now this morning after having a good night's sleep and watching the debate, how do you feel this morning and who are you leaning towards and who did you eliminate? >> i still feel the same way the top five can take on president biden. i think they can beat him. i was leaning towards tim scott. i still feel the same way. i thought he was the most statesmanship on the stage. i don't like the bickering. i don't think american voters
7:35 am
care for the bickering. they all violated ronald reagan's admonition not to speak ill of other republicans but the voters are looking for someone who has a solid track record of accomplishment and can speak to their needs. for the most part, the ones most involved with the bickering didn't accomplish that. there was a lot of shallowness from some of the candidates about how they would approach different problems. and so i would say there are probably three candidates, the two minor governors and vivek that probably would not make it onto the national stage. >> bill: who are those three? >> hutchinson and the governor from north dakota, and vivek. >> bill: denise, we will complete the circle here, guys. you are doing great and you are

all very thoughtful. what did you think? >> i went in leaning desantis and i still am for desantis. one of the issues that he brought up doesn't seem like a big issue but he talked about bringing civics back into education. if we are going to get our country back, people have to understand what the bill of rights provides us, what the constitution provides us. then you won't be duped into voting for somebody that promises you something like i'll forgive all your student loans. you'll know that branch of government can't do that. >> dana: great to have you. >> bill: chris. what are you laughing about? >> good to be back. >> dana: here i am again. so you run a restaurant and it's a packing house. >> right. >> dana: encourage everyone to go. did you hear anybody talking about the economy in the way that met your expectations?
7:37 am
>> a lot talked about the economy. i think most, if not all the candidates understand it's a number one issue in a lot of people's minds, right? i came in very open to governor desantis. i left feeling stronger about that opinion. i agree with denise. he was talking about things -- like i said yesterday, we need to present a candidate that is talking about the future. talking about the issues that people want to know their policy position. not only what they would -- what their policy position is but how they will do it and what they'll get done. governor desantis did that really well. i anticipated that he would be the butt of a lot of attacks. that really didn't happen. that allowed him to expand on his policy ideas, which i really like to hear. so when i think about my own business and how that is going to be affected and my family is going to be affected, my biggest
