eric: the world of television has lost a legend but bob barker the longtime host of "the price is right" has died. he was at 99 years old. barker has worn humor and its price is right audience members as a screamed and jumped for joy was at in living rooms for generations but he's a suave, smooth, reassuring presence and he had that manner. of course is what love of animals made him a unique caring celebrity. we have lost an american icon.

hello everyone welcome to "fox news live" i am eric shawn. alicia: an absolute legend. hello eric i am alicia acuna and for arthel neville. bob barker's part of the longest showing game show in america left us peacefully in his los angeles home for he said he knackered for network tv longevity hosting the "price is right" for 35 years before retiring in 2007. and there is so much more to his life and legacy. christina coleman is live in los angeles with that. hi christina. >> yes, bob barker publicist confirmed he died in his los angeles home this morning of natural causes. barker was a game show host legend. he hosted the "price is right" for over 35 years and 119 enemies during his incredible career. five of them for outstanding game show host. barker held a miss unit usa pageants from 1967 until 1987. time magazine claimed in the greatest game show host of all

time. he produced and hosted the "price is right" until 2007. but barker still made appearances from time to time for you to guess starting shows including how i met your mother, the nanny, the bold and the beautiful calm he famously starred alongside adam sandler and the comedy happy gilmore for the fight scene th there's so my people remember it. sandler just posted a tribute with this photo is very sweet. the man, the myth, the best sweet funny guy to hang out with great love talking to the imprimprintlovett lacking with t loved him kicking the crab out of me but he will be missed by everyone around. heart breaking day, love to bob always and his family were thanks for all you gave us. barker and she mentioned was an animal rights activist. he eventually refused to host a pageants over the refusal to stop using furs during the broadcast. barker and at every price is right episode by urging pat owners to be responsible part how thoughtful is that we take a listen to this. his final sign off of his final

this is a reflection. just how far we have come as the nation over the past 60 years you think back to 1963, you have to remember a very different time and space and has come a great deal since then for a powerful reminder of the promising future we will all share together so long as we keep working as one american family. now, when doctor king spoke in 1963, as you mentioned about a quarter of a million people witnessed what would come a moment in u.s. history. it's really what has happened since then say organizers that is truly historic. we talked but historic gains and politics and economics and finance and measurable gains african-american to graduate from colleges and universities. as well as professional jobs reflect the dignity of hard work. it is progress, yes but the work

joining us now by phone and other former longtime game show host, wink martindale. thank you so much for joining us today. you are a legend in your own right also. can you give us some reflections on your friend? >> will i will tell you, in the history of televised game shows, in my opinion no name is more synonymous with host than that of bob barker. the word that always came to my mind personally when the name bob barker was mentioned was the word superlatives it. he defined the meaning of the preparation. the tape never rolled until bob was ready and that meant prepare. it was my distinct honor to call bob at my friend for a number of years. to chat with bob about his

career was so interesting and so meaningful. i can truly say that in my lifetime i have never known anybody any better at what he did them bob barker. i think of arthur godfrey when i was a kid. i looked up to him. i looked up to art linkletter. he was terrific and a personal hero of mine was bill cohen. but mention bob barker. alicia: we doing to offer our condolences to you and the relationship you had with a bob barker. i did read and 35 years of doing the "price is right" he only missed one taping which was for four episodes. talk about dedication and hard work. you talk about all of that preparation that occurred prior to the taping. however, he always came across as talking to everyone.

it was so easy, off-the-cuff. what was it? what did it take? what kind of work did it take behind the scenes to pull it off and to make it feel so friendly and seamless at the same time? >> i have always thought it always said if anyone asked me about what makes a real good game show host is simply being prepared and a love of people. if you like people and you are a game show host you have the perfect job. speaking for myself, when a new contestant came on the show you a 20 -- 30 seconds to become familiar with that person, to bring them out. to prepare them to play the gam. nobody, but nobody ever did that better than bob barker. he looked like he was just talking to somebody because that was bob.

he was just a regular guy. that is what added so much to his success over the years. alicia: i want to thank you for this conversation per there are so few people on this earth you are one of them, bob barker was more than that in their job everyday managed to bring smiles to people, joy and some laughter. he will be sorely missed, thank you so much wink martindale. >> wink martindale. eric: bob barker to another type of contest republican white house hopeful is back on the campaign trail out the smoke has cleared from wednesday's first debate that you probably saw it right here on the fox news chamfered florida governor desantis political news newcomer vivek ramaswamy are an iowa stomping there that is were governor desantis is set to hold his second event of the day right at this hour. take a look at a "washington post" poll shows both of those candidates scored highly in the debate performances.

nikki haley coming in third period so how will the debate affect the rest of the race? political correspondent at the washington examiner and fox news contributor. a few days later now, who do you think won? who do you think perhaps could have done better? what do you see now that we are in the week of campaigning? >> it usually takes a week or so for something like this to sink in. because most people do not watch the debate. they read about it, see something about it on tv or more importantly talk about it with people they know. gradually they form an opinion it. we do have this quickie pole that show showed most people tt ron desantis did the best of followed by vivek ramaswamy followed by nikki haley. i will say the results of that quickie pole, exactly mirror where the polls are today. desantis, vivek ramaswamy,

haley, then a pencil. a lot of people in that poll looked at the debate and kind of summer they wanted to see which is the person they are ready supported felt they did the best. i think in the next few days maybe a week or so people will have a little more perspective on and will finally know who benefited the most out of that debate. eric: some saw governor desantis holding back will others were in a mud fights, what is your sense of that? rex all the candidates will say they did great in the debate and it shows america's ready for new leadership. that is just what is going to happen. i think going into the debate the story is the same now coming out of the debate. which is for ron desantis, can he do something to stop his slide in the polls? today, real clear politics average of national polls is rating is less than half of what it was in january.

it has been a long slow slight and he really has to stop that at some point too. most people think he did fine in the debate. as far as vivek ramaswamy he's kind of a divisive character. there are some people thought people were annoyed by him. we'll see how that worked out for him a lot people did think nikki haley did very well she was clearly the most impressive of that of the group. we will see how that plays out. before you talk about governor haley she is a fundraising e-mail that came out on the airport a brown girl growing up in a black-and-white world is how the promise of america unfold before me which is quite a compelling story that propeller to the statehouse in south carolina. she has international experience it. and as she mentioned her husband michael is an eight year long deployment with the south carolina national guard and africa. do you see her coming around the corner like may be potentially

gaining ground because of her performance at this debate? man did she scorch vivek ramaswamy on foreign affairs. [laughter] like she did she took it to him quite a bit. we have this weird situation for there are a lot of weird situations in this race as a matter fact. but one of them is you have two candidates from south carolina. you have former governor of south carolina and the sitting senator from south going to both running. and by the way both are behind the former president donald trump and south coletta polls. it was an odd situation. i think the debate was away forr haley to show her abilities relative to everybody else other than president trump, on the stage. what you mentioned is almost unique in the sense she has domestic executive experience the governor of south carolina. plus foreign policy experience. she was the u.s. ambassador to united nations but other than

congrcongressman, advisor to dor martin luther king jr. he talks about hope and what he wanted with the civil rights movement wanted for our future. but also that we still have setbacks, don't we? what's who deafly do. a couple of moments ago ambassador young addressed crowds at the lincoln memorial today where thousands are gathered to commemorate to brief you asked them to catch up with the organizers last night for tonight -- check for two days in march and they say a continuation for not only are they commemorating there is a continuation to them for it to your point there are still some setbacks. they think there's a lot of progress that must be made to make sure the country is indeed not only equal but equitable for all americans appear to think that is what today's commemoration is about you. how do we level the playing field for everybody? and how do we do it in a world in which as we heard i talked to king the third yesterday and his daughter. when his daughter is born with

less rights than her mother was bored with. this is the question i think folks at the ma march today are asking themselves. alicia: what about you when you look back? >> listen, the march is a very important thing to me. think about the person organize the marches specifically who was a black gay man. who at the time is not allowed to talk about his identity. his identity was pushed to the back when he organized it but we now know the commemorate this anniversary there are speakers that are black and lgbtq ia speak to the progress we have made for but that's happening all across the country you see laws make it harder for those folks to live their lives out in the open. there is still at work that needs to be done. that is the critical point here. we sit here and commemorate 60 years we have to remember america's martin luther king said best the ark of the universe bends towards justice where there is still some more bending that we have got to do. alicia: i'm curious when you

hear folks of younger generations and they talk about where we are in the united states. i hear a lot of complaints about how things are so terrible. but you use the example of the organizer right there. there has been so much progress and there is so much should be to begrateful for, isn't there? >> there's no question america has made a lot of progress. you think about that 60 years ago, i might not be on the airwaves. but with that being said, exactly right question work with that being said this to work to be done. we know a woman makes less than a man in the same job title but we know there's more work to be them a black women are three times more likely to die giving birth to children there's more work to be done we see the fact the wealth gap is as big as it is right there still more work to be done. we make a big mistake. especially of these conversations are and how we talk about american history. if we don't talk about american history accurately would make

the mistake of repeating the same things over and over again or not actually working together to make the country the more perfect union that is required our founders required it to be. >> is looking back at some of the coverage from that day. it was august 28 , 63. cbs news interviewed lena horne the legendary singer, actress and singer rights activist she called that day a nether beginning. i thought that was such a beautiful way to look through the lens of history. we have seen it so many starts and stops. but it also points to how important it is for you like you say it what to focus on what's happening and be honest about it, your last thoughts? >> is actually right. one thing we do wellin this country is when we look at a problem and try to fix it. the probably do not do well is saying we had a problem, we passed a law now let's examine if that law worked but let's

examine how effective that law has been what tweaks do we need to make to that law to make it better? case in point after the march on washington rated number of major legislation inspected voting rights act, we had the fair housing act, we had the level the playing field. often times we don't go back and look at those laws and say are we making sure were living up to the voting rights act as it was passed? are we making sure were living up to the civil rights and the essence of those passing are we mmaking sure were living up to the fair housing act the essence it was passed in? i think if we do that work as a country, we can actually make a more perfect union where everybody has a life, liberty and able to pursue their happiness. i think today's great as america is we have to do more work. there are far too many americans that don't have the ability to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as everybody else does brickwork's progress, always progress read fox news contributor richard fowler thank you so much of the conversation today. >> you to take care.
