especially the motoring public. we have to focus on the individuals trying to stop human smuggling. we can't stophuman smuggling. we can stop the flow of people crossing at the ports of entry. this requires a federal response. it's a responsibility of the federal government to stop what we're seeing. until then, neil, this is something that we have to deal with every day trying to go after the criminals taking advantage of the situation on the border. >> neil: thanks, chris. chris olivarez. mike mccaul and henry cuellar will be my special guests tomorrow and how the border has become a national security concern. that will be tomorrow. for the time being, i leave you with the do you down about 116 points. some of the tensions eased. we'll explore.

>> hello, i'm jump pirro with jesse brandon and greg it's 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five." the republican candidates picking up the pieces after a wild second debate. the contenders ripping each other up while trying to sell themselves as the best chance to defeat president biden but the big question is did anyone break through? the candidates seem to care more about delivering their one liners and talking over each other than trying to win over actual voteers >> you're ducking these things. let me tell you what's going to happen. we are not going to call you donald trump any more. we are going to call you only do duck. >> joe biden doesn't belong on a picket line. he belongs on the unemployment line.

[laughter]. >> well thank you for reiterateing the question because i'd love to answer. >> we will get you some questions but you have to let us move on. we are going to the border next. >> people on the stage disagree but let's have legitimate disagreement. >> stewart can we get back to the question? >> no we cannot. sir. we will have to cut your mic and
2:03 pm
i don't want to do that so governor desantis, to you. there's one minute for questions three seconds for a followup. >> dana is here to help us break down what happened. dana we are all going to be asking you questions but you should have been here. we were all talking about how great you were and how you delivered that line but back to obamacare and you did lay down the law so we will proud of you. you did a great job we are going to go around and ask you questions. we will each give a take. i watched to see who was connecting and where that special moment was coming and for me nikki haley was the moment. for me when i watch nikki haley i saw a woman who took no prisoners wasn't afraid of the men squared off with her body language to the men and said know your facts bring it, tim,
2:04 pm
talking to senator tim scott and then with the one line the more i listen to you i feel dumber for having listened to you but i think nikki haley added some points of late from her point of view on top of what she did from the first debate. now, i thought desantis continued with the same kind of i a great job in florida and i can do it again. i don't know there was anything new there. i think the vent with the finger in the air started to get aggravating and bergham was a nuisance. he kept jumping in and i thought you handled him very well the chris christie the only reason he is there is to be talk down donald trump or donald duck as he called him. but, dana you had a front row
2:05 pm
seat. you got to see them up close and personal. from your vantage point who do you think won the night? >> i think your analysis is just adding to the consensus that there wasn't one breakout star from the night. i do think all of them felt a need to speak, sometimes to speak all at once and sometimes to say all the things they wanted to say in one answer which was difficult and not too helpful. we wanted to start with the economy and i believe from vivek answered the border and fentanyl and crime and i said we are going to get to all those things. you don't have to answer them all in the first question. i think because they were under time pressure there's frustration when there's multiple candidates. there's multiple candidates that want to answer the same questions. if did you that you would ask them four questions and really wouldn't get anywhere so there
2:06 pm
were good moments. actually the line of the night makes me laugh is when vivek thanks for speaking up when i'm interrupting. >> great line. >> they might have learned that one "the five." >> greg, your break. >> i think dana is wrong, there was and breakout star and it was dane and perino. i did not envy you. i was watching it. you were pretty much shouldering the load for two hours and you didn't break a sweat. my problem with the debate wasn't really the candidates at all because the outcomes you get are created by the design and fox joining univision was perhaps the west partnership since but lied hire dylan mulvaneyy. their premises reach out successfully every day but were treated as approved troops. she had no followup so it was
2:07 pm
like a deliberate list prepared by dnc to tweak the audience. didn't feel like a journalism debate. by the way, this isn't on fox so don't accuse me of shooting in the tent. hosts had autonomy over questions. this is over rnc who felt they had to have univision when it was value detract. give univision their own debate instead of loading questions with accusations. i was waiting for her to ask a candidate when was the last time you beat your kids. it was so silly. i would we exam the structure of the debates, less questions against a ton of candidates, consider podcasting where you go deep with the candidates whether vivek or rfk, jr. maybe you have four 30 minute debates two candidates each. that way you can go deep.
2:08 pm
there's no insulting because people relate to each other. this debate felt like 2015. it's 2023. maybe it's time to reexam this. >> all right, jesse your take. >> well i thought you looked very good on camera dana and i know that's the most important thing. >> i would say that hair makeup and wardrobe won the debate. >> you're eyes i don't think i need to say anything else. i know you don't have children but you had 7 last night and the cross talk was so tedious dana these candidates have to learn how to throw a punch and wait and react. they can't keep talking all over each other. like music. you can't just play the same note on the guitar. it felt like they were trying to speed through all their memorized talking point until the bell rings. it's like a chorus. you got your hook.
2:09 pm
you got the drum solo. maybe you have a horn section and you kind of weave in it like this beautifully and vary your notes. everybody is talking at the same speed same time and you couldn't understand a thing. there's also no story. when donald trump was running for president he had a story about america. about where america where was and where he what's going to take this country. remember that the chinese were hollowing out the industrial base. he was going to bring these jobs back through trade deals smash isis d.c. was corrupt he was going to build a wall and attack regulations. do you have any idea what any of these candidates want to do? i don't know that they want to cut taxes are the they going to fire powell at the fed? are they going to bust up monopolies in silicon val? i learned nothing from these people last night so they're not talking to the audience.
2:10 pm
they're talking to the camera. they're talking at the camera but at home we are watching it through a television on a couch and it's not making sense whatsoever. vivek has expert but i can't stop looking at his forehead. then i look at his hair. then i look at the sky. desantis tried to rise above things. give him credit for that he's got the record but there's no emotion. then nikki haley looked annoyed and scott who can't deliver a punch. there's there's dug, we have to say goodbye to doug. then we have christie who when he speaks i listen and then he tells a joke that bombs. so all of those people i think go down in the polls after. this trump goes up. and that the that. >> shannon. >> okay. this whole thing to me -- go
2:11 pm
ahead. >> i was going to say one of the things that for me toward tend of the debate when i asked the survivor question let me explain why i asked that because everybody as and republican voter who either doesn't want to vote for trump or is open to voting for someone else is looking at this field saying they have to coalesce behind one player if they want to catch president trump. all republicans know that show they didn't want to participate but their staffs call all of us every day and want to tell us exactly who they think should be voted on. not only to do it in public. >> so, i get it that maybe some people love the question, some people hate it, whatever but they would not be able to answer the question how mathematically are you going to be able to do this and i didn't see that. >> we know chris christie wrote down an 8. >> i think it was trump. >> yeah, he probably d. he's the only one looks like he's having fun. when you ask the voters who is
2:12 pm
number one person you wouldn't vote for he's at the top of the list. he seems like he is actually enjoying this thing. i got to tell you though it good for people to have zingers. you have to look like you didn't plan it and the executing it is tough but you're there at that time reagan library where reagan knew he was going to get asked about his age at 73 and everybody remembers with mondale i'm not going to exploit the youth and inexperience of my competitor and he landed like he just thought it and i don't know if anybody landed preplanned lines last night. >> one inning strange when i asked vice-president pence about obamacare and he said they would be repealing replacing obamacare and he said let me first talk about guns and mass shootings and how he was going to call for
2:13 pm
the death penalty and like okay, but still obamacare can we answer that. the other thing because they were talking over each other shannon frankly there could have been one of those lines and they got swallowed. greg had an interesting point about structure. maybe a way to do this imagine at the family dining table and by virtual reality the candidates could pop in and you could ask them questions and get more of a personal answer. a little a.i. wouldn't marti. the other thing i wanted to ask about child care. i did more research during the debate there. are moms trying to figure out is it worth working anymore. can you imagine, up to 50 percent of your income goes to child care and i kind of answered it but the fravpt doesn't give enough so that's something i wanted to get to but shannon i've taken up your time. >> you say when people throw in a kitchen sink, to me it was like when i was in miss america
2:14 pm
they can ask questions but you have your answer so it seemed like there was a lot of that last night. question asked had no relation to what they wanted to say. >> jessica. i'm glad you brought up that child care question. i texted knew the debate that was a wonderful thing to bring up because it connects the economy rolling back abortion rights kitchen table. spkr4: all of it and i was disappointed people were trying to steer around common sense extentions to the topics that we talk about on a daily basis here. my general take-away was that i was not the target demo for this debate but i understand everyone who likes donald trump is completely unmoved looking at these candidates and it was completely uninspiring. you probably picked up extras there. why do you think it was only christie and desantis that even touched the trump issue at all? >> well i think ron desantis
2:15 pm
should be commended for a couple things. one he didn't get into the fray early on. i know i would have liked to have got at ron desantis more quickly in the debate but because everybody was talking over each other not following rules it got pushed back but to his credit leap didn't jump in and you look at the washington post poll he won the debate according to people they polled so there was that. i think he realizes if donald trump is going to be spend all his money against him he might as well try to take him on. christie we know in his position i think he answered good questions about especially crime for example and on the border he had a good answer on that but vivek ramaswamy was happy to bring up president trump in a complimentary way. i do wonder can i run by you what my original last question was that i don't think people wanted need to do in the room? i wanted to say one answer only go down the row dog or cat.
