8:01 am
known as the trail blazer in the senate and in american politics. dianne feinstein, the longest serving female senator in our nation's history has died at the age of 90. i'm harris faulkner and you are in "the faulkner focus." senator dianne feinstein broke a series of glass ceilings on her journey to capitol hill. she was the first woman president of san francisco's board of superviseors, the first woman mayor in san francisco and the first woman elected to the senate in california. president biden and the late senator served together on the senate judiciary committee and he spoke on her legacy. he will speak on her legacy today. senate majority leader chuck schumer has already spoken and shared his praises. >> we lost a giant in the senate. she was smart, she was strong, she was brave, she was compassionate.
8:02 am
but maybe the trait that stood out most of all was her amazing integrity. her integrity was a diamond. >> harris: senior congressional correspondent chad pergram is on capitol hill. chad. >> good morning. there is sadness sweeping the senate today as lawmakers pay their tributes to the late california democrat. feinstein had been ill for months. missed several months earlier this year with shingles but feinstein even voted as recently as yesterday morning. >> mr. president, yesterday the senior senator from california came onto the floor through those doors to do her job. she voted. she voted to make sure that our country would continue to move forward and not shut down. that was dianne
8:03 am
>> senators spoke about their friend and trailblazer and legend. senate placed two dozen white roses on her desk this morning to mark her passing. >> and the sign of a friend is someone who stands by your side to fight the good fight on the good days and on the bad. dianne feinstein was all of this and more, friend, hero for so many, a leader who changed the nation. so today we grieve. we look at that desk and we know what we have lost. >> feinstein's friendships extended across the aisle. she had investigations with gun control and the ty torture she

was also a talented artist. >> put up this watercolor painting that diane did and gave me so many years ago. it has hung in my office ever since and it will have a place of honor there always. >> feinstein discovered the bodies of san francisco mayor george masconi and harvey milt in the mid 70s when they were murdered at city hall and she became mayor and instrumental in passing the assault weapons ban in 1994. >> harris: i know the president is due to speak about her passing coming up. i think he is running a little late at a ceremony honoring retiring chief mark milley. chad pergram on the hill. on "focus" now on the passing and legacy of senator dianne feinstein, marc thiessen, columnist for the "washington post" and fox news contributor.

all morning long people have been sharing their memories and basically in a way a lot about american history leading up to her death today. what are your thoughts? >> she was a towering figure. she was a pioneer for women in politics, she was obviously as you saw from the clip from susan collins beloved by many of her colleagues. i will speak ill of the living, not the dead. schumer recalled in that speech how conservative republican senator, he called a nasty republican senator treated her in a condescending way and how she responded with such grace. it was the democrats who in the last months of her life were trying to drive her out of office. this is all forgotten in her passing. they have been trying to push

her out for months now because she was inconvenient to them. when she was ill in the hospital they had trouble passing judges. so chuck schumer drove her out of her chairmanship of the judiciary committee. they would have removed her if it had not been for the fact they needed republicans to replace her as a vote and tried to drive her out of the senate. if you want to talk about nasty, that's it. so i hope that today, as they eulogize her they have regret how they treated her in the final months of her life. she did so much for the democratic party and women in politics and to have such treatment of her in her final months was shameful. >> harris: what you are also talking about is the hypocrisy that exists among those leadership still and you talk about yes, talk ill of the living, that's called current and present criticism. and that is definitely within

inevitably dying of an overdose. the one message missing in all of this and one thing we haven't heard? get off the drugs. we want to do treatment. instead here is a needle. here is the pipe to smoke fentanyl or meth in. it is untenable and all we're doing is postponing in that moment the inevitability. >> harris: a good sign or temporary sign there was a pushback on the mayor's idea? >> i am so pleased with the decision. it didn't go far enough. you can do it in one particular neighborhood. fact of the matter is they are still shooting up all over the place in philadelphia, particularly the kensington neighborhood. i spent a lot of time about the philly problem. it is not just happening there but across the country. >> harris: violent crime, our nation's capital reaching a tragic milestone now. washington, d.c. student was killed in gunfire on his way

home from school. the d.c. police union posted this. it marks the 200th homicide this year. last year the city hit 200 homicides on december 29th. completely senseless. it is the first time in more than a quarter century that d.c. homicides have surpassed 200 in a single year. it is only the end of apt now. one activist said the district needs a tougher police chief. >> mothers killed by drive-by shootings. children not old enough to drive stealing cars. it's the wild, wild west. do not confirm bowser's choice for chief of police. when crime is at 20 year high she chooses a park ranger when we need a marine general. >> one the one hand whether it's d.c. you need police to do their jobs and signal clearly to the criminals out there that you are not going to accept this. you need a d.a. or prosecutor on

your side as well. when people realize they aren't going to go to jail or suffer consequences they will lean into that behavior. >> harris: look at the screen. >> precisely. we have to understand something, the culture of lawlessness that the democrats have put forward thanks to black lives matter movement, that's not just going to go away. you aren't flipping a switch and we'll go back to the way things were. what is happening in d.c. is happening all over the place. >> harris: it is hard to solve all of this if you don't support the police. >> exactly. >> harris: give them the power but give them your backing. it looks like quarterback colin kaepernick still wants a job. he has out of the league since 2016. when he began taking a knee during the national anthem as a social justice protest he found himself without a job and hard to get another one. this week he reached out to the new york jets. lord knows they need help with that position. he is looking for a spot on the

team's practice squad after quarterback aaron rodgers had the season-ending injury. this is colin kaepernick who compared the nfl draft to slavery is who we're talking about. he said before they put you on the field, teams poke, prod and examine you searching for any defect that might affect your performance. so he wants back. >> it's kind of sad because it is like you are asking someone for a date over and over again. i am not into you. >> harris: we call it stalking. >> he knows he won't get chosen but also loves to be seen as a victim. lots of people love to be seen as a victim. he knows he will get rejected and some think piece will be in the atlantic or salon.com saying this is white supremacy is action. >> harris: there is pressure on the jets to do something. travis kelce and the chiefs will be here and so will taylor swift. oh oh, "outnumbered" after the break.
