from washington tonight. breaking news from a moment ago a cochise county arizona deputy is lucky to be alive tonight after getting seriously injured while chasing an illegal alien crossing into the country. the deputy was flown by helicopter to tucson trauma center where is he receiving treatment for very serious injuries. we will have more details in moments. but, first, last night, newt gingrich said something on this show that had the internet buzzing for the last 24 hours. >> i think trump will be the nominee and the question now for everybody is do you want to see joe biden reelected? or do you want to help donald trump? there's no middle ground here, i don't think. >> laura: now, beginning grism is saying what most are thinking. now, look at the polling. the real clear politics average has trump at 57.6%. no one is coming close. even desantis, who is in second, has barely cracked the double digits. now, trump and the voters don't see right now any of these candidates as real threats.
4:02 pm
but, are any of them potential running mates? >> we're competing with the job candidates. they are all running for a job. no, they are all job candidates. they want to be -- they will do anything. secretary of something. they even say v.p. i don't know, does anybody see any v.p. in the group? i don't think so. >> laura: oh, let's be gracious. look, he says that now when he is up at a speech. but, may not be what he is thinking six months from now. it's friday, so let's break down the pros and cons. hypothetical some potential v.p. picks. joining me now to do that byron york. chief political correspondent for the examiner. fox news contributor and horace cooper author and legal commentator. byron, let's start with you. who is a really good pick right now. new to pick one v.p. for trump, who would it be. >> if i picked one, i would probably pick sarah huckabee sanders. she is a governor of arkansas. a trump white house veteran.
4:03 pm
no other governmental experience than that but actually really good choice for president trump. >> laura: okay. horace, that is interesting sarah saunders obviously very young knows the president very well. he know he respects her greatly. what are your thoughts. >> well, i actually think youngkin would be a better running mate if you pick up virginia and the survey show with him on the ticket you are very likely to carry virginia that would mean you wouldn't need to worry about a state like wisconsin in terms of electoral votes. you must figure out a way to grow the support on election day and that's one way to do it. >> all right. well, you have three picks up there. we will get to each one. byron, one of horace's choices, you saw up on the screen, was nikki haley who was very well respected governor of south carolina. of course, u.n. ambassador and they had a very good working relationship, but she comes from
4:04 pm
a different side of the philosophy in the republican party today no doubt. but, what about her? >> well, as you said, she is one of my picks, too. as you said. the pros are she is very, very experienced both in domestic governing in policy and in international affairs, so that's a big deal. the con, of course, she is running against trump. and criticizing trump. but she hasn't been that super critical of trump and politicians can get over that sort of thing and, besides, i think trump kind of likes it when someone who has been very critical of him has to come around and maybe kiss the ring and be -- work for him. so, yes. she is from a different wing of the republican party, but they are out there, too. and they do vote. and giving them a reason to vote for donald trump against they might not vote for otherwise is not a terrible idea. >> laura: so you are saying it mollifies some of the concerns of the establishment types who are still very worried about
4:05 pm
president trump's electability. i understand that. let's move on to some cabinet picks. horace, the border is so important. obviously needs someone who really know what is they are doing. and is credible on border enforcement. who might trump choose for that? >> well, i suggested that, perhaps, abbott might be a great pick for homeland security. someone who is actually demonstrated some leadership in this particular area and someone who people trust would be serious about handling the duty. and someone who has had some leadership experience. he has been a governor, elected several times in the state of texas. >> laura: well, byron, i mean, governor of one of the most important economies in the world to dhs secretary, eh, yes, no? >> laura: seems to me like a demotion. he would be fantastic. i agree with horace, no doubt about it.
4:06 pm
would that be something he would do? because for a long time people thought he had presidential ambition. maybe obviously not this time but maybe down the road. >> absolutely. i sort of half expected him to run this time. but he did not do that. you know, another possibility for dhs, trump talks about -- he talks a lot about how well the border was working while he was president. well, why not go back to the last dhs secretary ken cuccinelli and have him come back? i think a lot of what trump is going to want to do is actually restore the policies that he had put in place prior to joe biden becoming president and the same people could do it. >> laura: horace, other cabinet secretaries that are obviously very important would be treasury, commerce, secretary of state, cia director. i mean, i know this is friday, so we are playing these games. but it is interesting, and it may be something that, again, mollifies the concerns of some independents who maybe just say i'm not going to vote this time
4:07 pm
or others who, i'm not sure -- he did that with the supreme court picks, in other words, he put out a list which i thought was brilliant in 2016 who he would put on the court. why not put out a potential list of cabinet picks? >> okay. so, first thing let me say i think that's one of the benefits that someone like nikki haley might bring, both as either secretary of state nominee or as a running mate because places like michigan, places like arizona, places like georgia have a suburban women vote that you might want to reach out to. broadly speaking, there would be some substantial value to just listing some names of some people that we could trust. there were some hiccups to put it mildly, when the first round of cabinet officers were named during the trump administration. i think in the end we ended up getting a lot of good people in. but it might be a great idea like with a supreme court. let's find out in advance who we are thinking about picking and let those people get vetted.
4:08 pm
>> laura: byron, i think the first 100 days, a lot of wasted energy in the first 100 days of trump's term. we can all say that now. still, you know, working on the, you know, the band, the muslim ban that wasn't a muslim ban. mediate by the way is reporting that r.f.k. jr. is planning to run as independent, is he going to make that announcement in october 9th in pennsylvania. byron, how might this effect the race going forward? is it good for someone like trump? bad for biden? or could there be some other contingency developed with that? >> wasn't going to be any debates or acknowledgment there is a contest going on in the democratic party and indeed
4:09 pm
robert f. kennedy jr. has never surged and hit above 20%. a lot of times is he down around 14% or. so he does represent people who might be democrats who don't want to vote for joe biden it. would seem to me that if he announced an independent run, that could be very damaging because there are those democrats. we know they are there. they don't want joe biden. maybe they are not focused exactly on who they want. but, any credible choice they would take. >> laura: all right. horace, i know i heard you cough there now i'm worried about you. i mean, something's going around but i'm glad you are still there horace, i had a coughing fit the other night so i'm just empathizing with you on the air. cornel west still out, there is he driving them absolutely nuts because he is just like look, i represent the real liberal progressive wing of this party. you guys are kind of half baked in that category. might he still be a problem for this biden re-election bid?
4:10 pm
>> well, first, let me say that byron york is connect. the chickens have come home to roost. this unfair effort to prevent a dynamic race among democrats is harming the support of joe biden. it would be better to defeat your opponents fair and square. now, when you talk about third party candidates, you start to see people that are just going to peel off. this election is probably going to be pretty tight. the pulling numbers show numbers on the left that go with someone other than joe biden cripple his opportunities. look at the prediction polls where people are betting. for the first time in this election cycle, we are seeing something that we didn't see last time. and that is at no point did the prediction betting polls show that trump was likely to prevail
4:11 pm
in 2020. they are already showing that trump is likely to. the entrance of other third party candidates is likely to exacerbate that phenomena. >> laura: byron, really quickly, do you agree with some who said that trump, including yours truly, by the way, some said for trump to really win he has got to get to like 55%, given how the democrats managed to, you know, creatively, you know, find votes, they are really good at mail-in ballots but that this has to be bigger than a squeaker to have the real confidence that trump can win this. >> listen, if he manages to get through the mine field of his trials next year and he wins the republican nomination, he is still going to have incredibly difficult time winning a general election. there are large percentages of americans who say they will not vote for donald trump. important lesson for the 2022 can midterms that a lot of voters who said that the economy
4:12 pm
wasn't very good. it wasn't helping them. they would normally vote against the democratic party but they voted for democrats because the democrats had done such a good job convincing them of the threat of maga. that would be multiplied in a 2024 biden-trump rematch. >> laura: all right. byron, horace, great to see both of you. thanks so much. if, in fact, dianne feinstein were to retire, will you nominate an african-american woman to restore the seat that schars no longer in the united states senate. >> we have multiple names in mind and the answer is yes. >> laura: yeah, march in 2021 newsom admitted that he would discriminate based on race were he toe choose feinstein's successor. and now with the senator's passing at age 90, will democrats' plan b, newsom, keep his race-based pledge? joining me now is larry larry

scenario is kamala harris. she wants to be president. >> laura: wait a second. speaking of harris. i'm so glad you brought her up. she is really upset over the attacks that have been growing on the diversity, equity, inclusion stuff, larry. and this is what she says. >> i look at these attempts to attack dei, diversity, equity and inclusion, they are trying to do the same thing they did with woke. they are trying to turn it against the people who understand exactly why it is important to focus on and be alert and awake to what is happening. >> laura: i don't know what any of that means. but she kind of does like weird hand gestures and it doesn't actually amplify or explain what she is saying, larry. but, perhaps, can you interpret for me. >> well, the party is confused. cacall recall the candidate bark
