mike: these are live images from southern israel with where more than 600 israelis have been killed by the there arist group hamas. the israeli security cabinet formally declaring a state of war as united states secretary of state antony blinken said this morning the united states was likely to announce additional aid for israel by the end of the day. welcome to "fox news live," i'm mike emmanuel. sandra: mike, good to be with you. thank you, everybody, for joining us, i'm sandra smith. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying israel will take mighty vengeance. as we start off with trey yingst on the ground there live in southern israel where night has a fallen, trey. obviously, it is now dark there, it's 8:00 in the evening. what is the very evening, trey? >> reporter: sandra, good afternoon. as we speak, the israeli military is striking the gaza strip every few moments. a loud explosion along the border, likely israeli fighter

jets targeting a hamas positions in the northern part of gaza. you can hear one of the explosions just there. this has been ongoing tonight as israel starts their ponce to that massacre yesterday -- their response -- that tonight israeli officials say the death toll has reached more than 700 people, both soldiers and civilians. many still missing. you can see paramedic,s they're preparing in the case that some of the rocket fire coming into israel actually hits houses in populated areas. they will respond when that happens. this is a very difficult situation. we're going to turn with our camera, we've got a lot of rocket fire coming in here. the lights you see in the sky are israel's missile defense system, the iron dome, intercepting that rocket fire. and the small explosions indicate a success offul interception. this -- successfulling
10:03 am
interception. this has been the scene in the southern part of israel. sirens sounding behind me, they may already be getting calls they need to respond to this area. but what this conflict is erupting into is the possibility of a regional war. earlier today, sandra, rocket fire and mortar fire from lebanon, the lebanese militant group hezbollah getting involved in the fight. they targeted an area that was previously lebanese territory in the 1970s, an indication that they're sending a message to israel but not quite ready to get directly involved in this war. israel today making a formal declaration of war. amid all of this information, i do want to show you a little bit about what it looks like in the towns near the gaza border. we entered a city today where many people were massacred yesterday and saw some of the equipment that hamas left behind. take a look. you can see one of the pickup trucks used by a hamas if fighters to infiltrate into

southern israel. in the back, the gear that they brought with them. you can even see some of the clothes that they were wearing at the time. these militants massacred many civilians. some were taken hostage and are now prisoners of war inside the gaza strip. really horrific scenes throughout the town today, blood in the streets and cars with their blinkers still flashing and bullet holes in the windshields. as this was happening, hamas militants still trying to infiltrate into southern israel. we did get some video from the israeli border police here showing officers yesterday rescuing an israeli family from palestinian militants. a gun battle erupting along the border and these soldiers and border police pushing forward to save this family. unfortunately, not everyone was this lucky. dozens were captured and taken into the gaza strip by hamas and
10:05 am
islamic jihad. according to israeli officials, more than 100 people -- some dead, some alive -- are currently being held by those factions inside gaza, and it creates even more of a difficult situation as the region braces for days and weeks of conflict. sandra? sandra: trey, just a remarkable scene there live behind you. again, as night is falling as so many are preparing for what could be a very long war. how in the immediate future are they preparing for what will likely be a very long night, trey? >> reporter: there is a collective effort in southern israel to pitch in and prepare this country for war. everyone's doing what they can to participate. there are medics behind me getting ready for calls that they will receive throughout the night. firefighters at different stations across southern israel in case they are called to the scene of a fire after a rocket impact.
10:06 am
and soldiers getting ready to enter the gaza strip. today we saw thousands of soldiers and tanks, artillery units and other vehicles headed toward gaza. and these soldiers didn't look afraid. they looked prepared. they were waving israeli flags in some of the apcs that we saw, and they were waving as civilians along the side of the road were cheering them on. there is a feeling here9 that the country is at war and much of the political turmoil that israel has faced over the past year and a half will be put aside. hundreds of thousands of reservists called up, and israel's allies stepping in to try and send a message to other regional actors like the iranians or the lebanese militant group hezbollah or others that could threaten the jewish state that the united states stands shoulder to shoulder with israel. we're getting reports tonight of a u.s. aircraft carrier heading to the mediterranean as a show of force. there's a real understanding that if hezbollah gets involved
10:07 am
in the fight, they have much more advanced weaponry than the gauze -- gazan militants have, and if that happens, it is an unpredictable arena. iran has threatened israel, hezbollah has threatened israel, the threats in gaza continue, and this is happening while there are hamas and islamicy jihad giants still in israeli territory and still trying to take people host toage. so there was this mindset and feeling if palestinians tried to infiltrate into israel, there would be an immediate response, they would be stopped at the border. it didn't happen. and as a result, hundreds of israelis are dead, thousands wounded, and the entire population of more than 9 million if people is experiencing one of the most traumatic events in the country's history. sandra. sandra: trey the, as you so intimately continue to report on all of this, i just want to make sure i get this back in here.
10:08 am
arthel just reported this a few moments ago, that this is just in per u.s. military officials telling fox news that the u.s. is moving these navy ships and military aircraft closer to israel. just wanted to get your quick thoughts on that before we let you get back to your reporting. >> reporter: there's a lot of movement in the region, and we don't want to speculate on what happens next, but it's a great question because i think it points to what western officials are preparing for. and that is a wide scale regional conflict. there's an understanding that americans and israel would have to be evacuated -- americans in israel would have to be evacuated. there is some confirmation that american citizens were killed and taken into gaza. so this is not just an event that that involves a u.s. ally anymore. it's an event that involves the americans directly. and if israel has to go to a multi-front war where they are facing rocket fire from gaza,
10:09 am
infiltrations from gaza, precision-guided missiles from lebanon, drones, for example, from places like syria and even as far as yemen and missile fire potentially from iran, i mean, this is what we have been told over the past few years reporting here, speaking with the defense minister, speaking with the prime minister, top intelligence sources, they have indicated this all is a worst case scenario. but that might nightmare is playing out before our eyes today, and it's something that israel and its closest allies including the united states, they have to prepare for. sandra? sandra: trey, we thank you for your continued reporting from there. be safe. we'll see you again shortly. thank you, or trey. mike: sandra, we're joined by israel defense forces reserve brigadier general, also the founder of the israel defensive security forum are. general, welcome. >> thank you. mike: why do you believe this vicious attack happened this weekend, and describe the mission now. >> so yesterday at 6:30 in the
10:10 am
morning hamas launched a huge attack on israel which included thousands of rockets and striking 22 israeli towns along the border, massacred children and women and kidnapping civilians and killing soldiers. the event is a full scale war for israel. the last time israel was in a state of war was in the yom kippur war, and the amount of dead and wounded in this one day is similar to the six-day war. this is how big this event is. now, israel now is doing four things before it goes on a massive counterattack. one is going from house to house in all the towns making sure there are no terrorists left, making sure that the land of
10:11 am
israel is completely clean from hamas militants inside israel. this is not over yet. the -- idf and police are still working, but i believe maybe tomorrow morning we'll be able to say israel in is full control of all israeli territory. the other issue is also strengthening our position in the north against hezbollah and also in the west bank. and at the moment, the decision -- idf is mobilizing hundreds of thousands of reservists that are going to the different locations. several divisions are on their way to gaza and are preparing for a massive attack into hamas stronghold inside gaza. now, we have to understand hamas is an iranian proxy funded by iran, guided by iran, and this
10:12 am
attack is an attempt not only to hurt israel, but also to show american interests. we are on the verge of building an alliance, the western israeli-sunni alliance by normalizing relations with saudi arabia. this will enable -- [inaudible] credible threat on iran to stop the russian are, iranian aggression in europe and in the middle east and in africa. and iran understands that. this is why they want to completely change the situation and attack israel. and this this is why we see the president of usa standing so strong with israel and understanding that both countries' basic interests are in danger. this is what we're seeing now. i believe it take a few days for
10:13 am
israel to get full readiness to launch an attack, and this is an ongoing process now. mike: general, do you worry about more civilians being killed because hamas is using them as human shields? >> definitely. unfortunately, hamas kidnappedded israeli civilians and soldiers. i think it's hamas' interest to keep them safe at the moment, but israel is putting the -- aside. we'll deal with it later. we're dealing now with destroying hamas' ability -- and this is a long-term operation. it's not going to be a short operation. it's not just going to be air force attacks. we'll have to maneuver massively inside gaza to destroy this capability and definitely this is going to be a complicated and will take time. we're with calling -- we're
10:14 am
calling the palestinian society to move out of areas where we are going in so they can keep safe. and we'll see in the next coming days how this evolves. mike: we know the united states is moving military resources into the region as a show of support. what more do you need from president biden and the american government with right now? >> i want to thank you, president biden and the whole administration and the congress and senate, for standing with israel, for assisting us with everything we need. i think i have one big request and this is standing strong against the one entity that is basically destabilizing the whole region, and this is iran. we must stop iran from becoming nuclear. we must hold a credible military threat against the iranian buildup of nuclear capabilities. and this, by the way, will not
10:15 am
only impact iran, this will also a deter russia, china and will help building back u.s. leadership globally. mike: general, or grateful for your time today, sir. our condolences to the israeli e people. >> thank you very much. israel is strong, the society is strong, the army is strong, and we'll prevail and win this war. mike: thank you, sir. sandra? sandra: all right, mike, thank you very much. as we gave -- as a we've been reporting, the u.s. is moving navy ships closer to israel. we have just learned, lucas tomlinson has the late from the white house. so far any -- the latest from there, what are you hearing right now, lucas? >> reporter: officials say this is a largely symbolic move. let's just take some stock what assets are in the region. you have the uss baton amphibious ready group, you'll have 2,000 marines item board with dozens of aircraft. that is located in the persian gulf and right now you would not want to move any of those assets
10:16 am
out of the persian gulf. of course, they're keeping a close watch on iran. joint strike fighters, hairier fighter jets, marine -- vipers, some of our older viewers know them as cobras, a more modern version, also huey gun ships as well. in the mediterranean, you have the u.s. navy's most modern aircraft care ier. you also have three guided missile destroyers alongside as well as the uss normandy. now, when it comes to moving assets closer, what does that mean, or sandra? the warship was 40 nautical miles offshore, now it's 30. yes, it's closer, but you not going to see that from the shore. probably the only people that would actually know that are israelis who are standing watch in the navy and also on shore. officials say there's no chance you're going to have a u.s. navy destroyer just on the horizon well within range of some of the goodies9 that the iranians have
10:17 am
supplied hamas. we also just learned moments ago, sandra, that president biden has spoken for the second straight day to his israeli counterpart, prime minister benjamin netanyahu, and there could be more u.s. military assistance forthcoming. the u.s. is weighing that decision, they're going over the list right now. we could hear from the secretary of state about that and other officials later today. one of the biggest concerns right now here at the white house and certainly at the pentagon and throughout the country, throughout the world are these hostage as that mamas -- hamas has taken. there are reports, we cannot confirm these reports, that there could be some americans that have been captured, kill or capture by hamas, currently being held in gaza. if that's the caseing there's some u.s. lawmakers that want to see the u.s. military spin up tier one asset from the joint command, but earlier secretary of state antony blinken spoke about those reports about possibly having american
10:18 am
casualties in this hamas attack on israel. >> we have reports that several americans were killed. we're working overtime to verify that. at the same time, there are reports of missing americans and there, again, we're working to verify those reports. >> reporter: then there's the matter of the $6 billion many republican lawmakers are irate that the biden administration unfroze some of those assets. the biden administrations toe is pushing back hard saying that not one cent of those unfrozen assets, none of the $6 billion went to finance these attacks in the past few days. here's a member of the biden administration on" fox news sunday" earlier. >> we believe those criticisms are not well founded and, frankly, incra accurate. any implication that money that has not yet been spent, not a single dollar of that money has yet been spent. and if iran spends that money in ways it's not supposed to, we will know. >> reporter: israel's ambassador to the united nations had some blunt criticism is
10:19 am
about those who say the $6 billion had nothing to do with these attacks. >> money is fungible. you can never track and make sure that money that is being transferred to the hands of terrorists will remain only and be used only for humanitarian needs. it's quite naive to believe so. >> reporter: senator tom cotton thinks hamas launched this war on the orders of iran to derail a potentially historic deal between saudi arabia and israel. he also leveled criticism on the biden administration for trying to negotiate with tehran. >> for three years the president has appeased iran, the world's worst state sponsor of terrorism. it's not just the $6 billion that was release from sanctions controls last month, it's $10 is billion that was released from iraq into iran. >> reporter: former secretary of state mike pompeo said there was also that $230 million that the biden administration sent to the palestinians on the first
10:20 am
day joe biden moved into the white house. sandrasome. sandra: lucas, if i could just follow up on the continued conversations with his israeli counterpart, benjamin netanyahu and president biden. we got that readout from the call earlier where they did say they're committed to staying in regular contact over the coming days. the president obviously showing his deepest sympathies for all those missing, wounded and killed. we seem to be getting an update. here's the addition. the president also conveyed that additional assistance for the israeli defense forces is now on its way to israel with more to follow over the coming days. lucas, i know that's what you were talking about just a moment ago, wanted to make sure agot that in there -- i got that in there. obviously, this is further sign this white house is committed to being at israel's side here. >> that's right. you've seen this incredible to reporting by our own trey yingst showing iron dome launching those interceptor missiles to knock out rockets. there are going to be thousands

rep cori bush stated peace in the region will only be found by, quoting, ending u.s. government support for israeli occupation and apartheid. that view is an outlier in congress. >> we stand four square behind them in this war to destroy hamas and its war making and governing capabilities. >> we have stood strongly behind israel during its first 75 years, we will stand strongly behind israel for the next 75 years and beyond. >> reporter: fox news' chad pergram has confirmed hakeem jeffries, who you just heard from there, received a briefing last night on the escalating situation and is attempting to arrange a briefing for all house members. since eight gop hard-linersouted their house speaker last week, there is no permanent republican at the helm. >> it's not really clear if the speaker pro tem, patrick mchenry, can even get the intelligence briefings to know exactly what's going on this realtime. that limits the house's ability

this is from lloyd austin, the defense secretary, says the uss gerald ford carrier or strike group is going to the eastern mediterranean. it includes aircraft carrier the ford, ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser as well as other guided missile destroyers. that's heading to the region. also the united states will be augmenting the air force f-35, f-15, f-16 and a-10 fighter aircraft squadrons in the region. also the united states government, according to this statement, will be rapidly providing the israeli defense forces with additional equipment and resources. that will also include munitions. the first security or assistance, according to austin, will begin moving today and arriving in the coming days. that's a statement that was obtain by fox by our producer here in the pentagon, liz frieden. this adds to an already existing u.s. military presence in the region as the united states has been there for some time. there are iran-backed militias,
10:29 am
not just hamas, but hezbollah that the united states is watching and concerned about. defense secretary austin did hold a secure phone call with his top u.s. military commanders including the new chairman of the joint chiefs and staff, general c.q. brown. pentagon also says he spoke with the israeli minister of defense and that the cia director, bill burns, he was supposed to go to a conference out of town, he hasta stayed in washington, d.c. so -- he has stayed so he's better able to coordinate with his counterparts when it comes to intelligence. hamas and its iranian-backed militias launched this attack as saudi arabia and israel were negotiating a potential historic peace agreement, so major time already i don't think going -- ongoing in the region when it came to that. all of this wrapping up from president biden on down in the administration, the pentagon promising to provide what they can to israel as it withstands this attack from hamas. sandra, back to you. sandra: rich edson with a live

10:31 am
israel is its own country, it is its own functioning democracy. they can take advice from whomever that they would like including the united states. but they need to do what's best for themselves, and i believe that i am confident in the state of israel and their military that it is only a matter of time that they stop taking this measured approach since 1948 and actually bring the boom and possibly for the first time look at turning that into a parking lot. as democrats continuously say, you know, ceasefire, ceasefire from what, sandra? it's been on one side and one side only, and that's been the terrorist-backed iranian regime of hamas. sandra: as a country, how should the united states perceive this? >> i think that we should perceive this as that we have a president when who sit es in the oval office who is incredibly weak and projects weakness. we have seen now for over a year and some change the war in ukraine. we see the aggression and we see the weakness that we've exuded

headquarters here in new york city. this is israel's 9/11, detailing the thurm of casualties, calling them truly catastrophic, labeling what he called a barbaric program of unparalleled magnitude, detailing that they are going about murdering everything that has moved. innocents murdered in cold blood, detailing what he said are blatant war crimes, documented war crimes. congressman miller is with us. congress marne, your reaction to what you just heard there. >> sandra, i'm gut-wrenched. that's one of the toughest things that i've ever heard. imagine if the united states had just received 5,000 rockets that was received over our border and we were overrun as we currentlyly are with your immigration problem except they went into towns and cities like where i live in rocky river. that could have been my wife, my future child, can that could be my neighbors and constituent withs. that's what they are dealing with. i think they need to deal with their approach, and when i heard
10:41 am
from the ambassador, when i met him in d.c., that's exactly what i wanted to hear. i wanted to hear strong talk that's backed up with a tough walk, and i know the state of israel can do it. they're going to have support from strong members of congress like me who will never back down. i believe you're going to see the majority of congress stand strong and stand tall and never allow terrorism to take over our world. and make no mistake, they want to kill us all too. it's the western way of life. that is how they look at it. they want nothing more. i believe israel needs to do what's best. i liked what i heard from the ambassador. i hope they're as aggressive as can be, and i hope they ignore the u.n. which is an already anti-semitic body. they need to do what they need to do to take care of themselves. i've had enough of seeing it from the united states. let's let the israelis take the gloves off, and i can't wait to see how they bring the boom. sandra: congressman, appreciate you sticking with us through that news conference. we'll continue to monitor it for
