soldiers and gun battles. this is been a difficult 48 hours for the country because they are facing attacks from palestinian factions including hamas and islamic jihad not just from the ground but the air. thousands of rockets fired into central and southern israel and tonight we are learning that iran helped hamas to cordate this attack. i want to show you what the scene was like with the border communities were hamas fighters on saturday entered and slaughtered civilians. take a look. >> here in the town of sderot you can see the pickup truck used by hamas fighters to appletree into southern israel. in the back, the gear that they brought with them you can see the closer they were wearing at the time. these militants, massacred many civilians in sderot, some were taken hostage in our prisoners of war inside of the gaza strip. hamas fighters were back in the

exact town tonight engaging the israelis in a firefight. we are getting new video of israeli border police firing on militants that kidnapped in israeli family on saturday morning. the video showing the border police and if soldiers running into a field firing on the militants in rescuing the fa family. a piece of good news amid the backdrop of the horrific, horrific story. tonight we know the israelis continue strikes against hamas in the northern eastern part of gaza. they have warned all civilians in the area to move to the un schools deeper in the gaza strip. we expect a massive excavation in the coming days as thousands of a israeli soldiers with tanks at apcs are now along the gaza border. joey: i'm going to send it over to lisa she has a question. lisa: lisa boothe here, you mentioned iran orchestrated the terror attacks. they met with four different

iran bacterial groups, hamas including hezbollah, what does that tell you about concerns that this could turn into a broader regional work? >> it is a massive concern not just for the israelis but the allies including americans. as part of the reason that we learned that the united states will send an aircraft carrier and fighter jets closer to israel and why you see so many israeli allies coming out with some much support with what's about to take place. it's good to be a violent and messy few weeks here on the gaza border. the fact that iran was involved in the planning and execution of this by telling these fighters how to get through israeli defenses and how to ultimately target the civilians and soldiers killing more than 700 people in taking back as prisoners as war, dozens. it means israel could respond directly against iran. there are other friends that could open up. hezbollah, the lebanese militant group backed by iran is really

the major concern. they don't just have homemade rockets like the gazans do. the precision guided missiles that have been smuggled into beirut and taken to the border. there are thousands of rocket and missile in southern lebanon and then pointed to israel. lilauren: lauren simonetti here. the surprise factor that took both israeli and u.s. intelligence by surprise, anymore on that? i know it is or the enders would be investigations into how everybody missed that. in israel, what is the feeling that the fact that the government missed this? >> this was clearly a massive intelligence failure. we have reported inside gaza and the gaza border in southern israel for years. israel for a very long time touted this wall as one of the most advanced in the world. we went was soldiers as they

showed us the sensors they had dug underground to assure if any tunnels were being dug along the border. they also prepared surveillance balloons and drones overhead to watch for the possibility of infiltration but hamas says they broke to the border at 50 different locations and claiming tonight, we cannot independently claim this number but they sent in 1000 fighters. when it attack on this scale is truly unprecedented, we could talk about the brutality of the attack. this is not just a shooting attack against soldiers as we have seen often in the west bank when we embedded with israeli forces as they conduct their operations there. this was a massacre, this was slaughtering women and children, killing innocent people who slept in their homes. the videos that we have seen online look like they came out of the absolving state published by isis. it will change in perception of the gazans and palestinian people for a very, very long

time. not everyone inside of gaza supports hamas but there's an ideology among the militants and the people who support these efforts in the slaughter of israeli civilians. that's what israel is up against. it'll be a very, very difficult battle in the coming days and weeks, when they go in on the ground as expected, they will not be able to send takes and apcs and ground troops in. griff: tray, it is chris, i want to go back to what you were saying about sderot having engagement with hamas militants and idf forces. right now sderot is one of the larger towns near gaza. in the immediate triage task for the idf was to get those areas that were seized and were trying to hold it. as you mentioned, there are a thousand fighters going to 15 breach point on the fence. what are we looking at? do we have an idea if the idea

perceives as comedy fighters are still resisting? >> we know there are fighters at different communities at the border. shocking there still fighting in sderot. when we were inside the town today, there were dozens of police officers on corners and soldiers that had jeeps. basically, a population that had largely left the town in the military had entered. and the fact that they are still fighting there is certainly surprising. griff: stay safe. great reporting. we will check in with you as it warrants. joey: he is fearless and is reporting. we want him to stay safe. i want to give you a deeper look at what has happened so far. as we look at the touchscreen, hamas attacks israel. this is how it began.

we want to point out, if you look at the hollow circles in the rockets iranians. coming from the gaza strip which is a small portion in red, if you look at rockets being fired to tel aviv and jerusalem, these are not makeshift rockets, we had experts earlier today talking about how most of the time the rockets are refitted, they're not necessarily advanced technology. in this specific attack, these are potentially guided missiles of some sort, guided artillery and make it all the way into the capital of tel aviv. if you look at the red dots these are cities that were infiltrated by ground troops, vacated several miles into israel. we will show you another screen that zooms in a little bit more. this shows you the ground attacks. the reason i want to point this out, the basis that were overrun or at least attacked well into israeli territory. we talked about sderot and these other places. we had basically idf spokesperson talk about how these are places where the hostage situations were going

on. real quick, down in the area, going to try to get this right, the desert where the music festival was happening. in this area 260 bodies found, more than you believe to be 100 hostages. what is important about the music festival we learned there is a german citizen that has been infamously put on social media that we believe is dead, there are people from around the world that were at this festival that may have been taken hostage and a couple other countries into this. but most in country and reportedly they are all civilians. the music festival was for peace. the next slide real quick. here we go the big aaron national airport. this is believed to be the target, trey was tweeting about this a few minutes ago. i think what i want to point out, hamas is not done attacking. this war is waiting.

griff: just to pick up on that. i was talking to trey he gave us shocking news in his report which was in sderot the largest city there the top northeast corner of the west bank area, they went ten, you know this as somebody on the battlefield, the first order of business is to get operational control. in the idf, obviously was caught off guard. we are about to go 4:00 a.m., 48 hours on and clearly the most skilled technologically advanced military in that neighborhood if you will in the middle east unable to get these militants under control which ashtray was reporting breached defense along the east side of the gaza strip. 15 places in a thousand

they are answering questions about this intelligence failure on basically the most surveilled part of the world by saying they are not ready to talk about what might've gone wrong. they are saying the united states did not get a heads up about a possible hamas attack from a third country. so they want that and any thought that that might be possible to go away as soon as possible. there was a big mistake in intelligence failure, somewhere along the line. they will certainly be an accounting but the white house officials are not ready to go there yet. griff: hopefully they come up with answers tomorrow. right now were getting a lot of information from the wall street journal. lisa: you look at the white house, the amount of time they've spent defending the $6 billion, the unfreezing of the money. what does that tell you about the white house political vulnerability on the issue?

>> the $6 billion is what people remember from the transaction. as time goes on it is not $6 billion for american hostages, people just remember the $6 billion, that's the way the things shake out. like tony blinken was saying in an account and it hasn't been used yet, that is not the criticism coming from republicans on capitol hill presidential candidates. there criticism is the $6 billion since iranian bookkeepers no they can spend on humanitarian goods that it could've freed up money elsewhere to fund terror attacks. nobody from the secretary of state going on the sunday shows as denying that iran is a state sponsor of terrorist attacks. they are being very clear and narrow with the explanation that that $6 billion did not pay for
