administration, secretary blinken's message came as the office of palestinian affairs said we urge all sides to refrain from violence. they took that statement down. this afternoon we expect to hear remarks from nick kay haley, remarks from former president trump, he will talk about peace through strength. he will contrast his message, his policies toward iran. his policy of peace accords in israel of that of the current administration, the former president of the united states will speak today. the former speaker of the house will speak today. the current president of the united states joe biden will not. as we watch those explosions in gaza, city gaza and bodies pulled from the rubble of that police station. those families in our prayers. thanks to everyone, now here is america reports.
10:01 am
>> israel is at war. isreali civilians is not something you want to play with. we will demolish every terrorists, we will. >> john: a live look at gaza, isreali forces are launching wide scale air strikes against hamas, launching the deadliest single attack since the hall cost. i'm john roberts in washington. we were not planning sandra on starting a week this way. >> sandra: no, john, good to be with you. our coverage continues
10:02 am
here. i'm sandra smith in new york, this is america reports. this situation continues to deteriorate every hour along the isreali gaza border, trading heavy fire at this hour all the while the white house remains silent. the president's team has just called a lid for the day within the last hour which means we are not expected to see or hear from the president today. the state department meanwhile is confirming at least nine americans were killed by those terrorists. and it remains unknown if any are among the dozens of hostages taken into gaza. >> john: despite the numerous american deaths and growing questions over its handling of the middle east, the white house as sandra pointed out, the president is not expected to come out in public or make any kind of statement for the rest of the day. >> sandra: trey yingst on the front lines in southern israel. trey, what can you tell us is
10:03 am
the latest? >> trey: sandra, john, the efforts of the isreali military continue at this hour to stage their forces along the gaza border ahead of a ground operation. more tanks and apc's, thousands of soldiers preparing for those orders that are expected to come in the hours or days ahead. in the distance loud explosions as the isrealis continue their air strikes along the gaza strip, more rocket fire coming off of gaza targeting communities not just here in the south but larger cities like jerusalem and tel aviv. last hour, amid the rocket fire here in the town of sderot. >> pan up here. i am going to interrupt you. we have iron dome intercept sores. pull it off the sticks. stay with us here. stay with us here. everyone go flat. we don't have time. go up. point up here. you are going to see
10:04 am
some interceptions taking place. there is more fire, rocket fire coming off the gaza strip right now. there are going to be loud explosions, don't be alarmed. >> trey: all right. we're getting more rocket fire right now, a heavy barrage, soldiers and police came through. there is going to be a loud explosion. just wait here, guys. you can see, this is the scene in southern israel. just constant fire. stay down, guys. stay down. just i am going to show you the scene. okay, there is
10:05 am
still more rocket fire coming off the gaza strip. they are firing from multiple directions. i'm trying to get past israel defense system, the iron dome. all of the soldiers and police officers that were here collecting the bodies of the militants and the officers that were inside this building have just taken cover next to us. guys, stay down. i can see rockets coming off the strip. just stand by. just hold on, guys. wait for the explosion. do you hear that explosion? that's interception. what hamas is trying to do here is something that they find effective. they fire rockets from different parts of the gaza strip. in an
10:06 am
effort to overwhelm the iron dome missile defense system. and they did that just there. it's not -- the normal tactic but a tactic if they time it correctly can be devastating for these communities along the border. again these officers continue their work at this hour. there is an in fill station into sderot last night so they have to remain on eye alert, they are armed, have weapons ready in case they have more attempts on the border. this is the scene right now. >> sandra: trey, thank you, john go ahead. >> john: hey, trey. the position that you are in there is one that we have seen you in before. and i'm sure that we are going to see you in it again as the rocket fire comes over from gaza. it really is quite extraordinary, the tenacity that you and your fellow correspondents have to be able to be in the middle of a war zone like that, at risk to
10:07 am
personal life and limb, continue to be on the air covering this live. typically since saturday and the initial barrage, how long do these palestinian attempts to overwhelm the iron dome system last? >> trey: they will often last in sporadic bursts so they'll go for a few minutes at a time, stop and start again. the issue has to do with the timing it takes them to reload. often hours will go by and we don't see that much rocket fire. i am going to put a helmet on here. we don't see that much rocket fire. right now is a different situation. hold that mic for me for a second. right now is a different kit asian, they clearly had time to reload throughout the day. we saw images along the border a few hours ago where the civilians were slaughtered initially when hamas and islamic jihad militants came in and you could
10:08 am
see the black smoke rising up from the border area. that was a result of the isrealis using artillery and also air strikes to hit the rocket launchers that sit along the border. if they hit certain launchers, islamic jihad hit launchers, they are able to do that and continue to fire on is real. >> sandra: trey, as we all watch you, god, just be safe. and we are getting a report now that the isreali prime minister is expected to speak any moment now. this as we get per isreali tv reporting that at least 900 people in the hamas attack in israel. we are also told via reports there could be a ground invasion at any moment now, trey. >> trey: yeah, absolutely. if isreali prime minister benjamin
10:09 am
netanyahu speaks, we've seen preparations over the last 48 hours, the war check ration the first time since the 1970s. and a country that understands what comes next this will not be easy, it will take weeks if not months and there will be casualties as a result. they've already warned the civilians and the eastern and northern part of gaza to move inward to go to un schools in gaza city. so, they are trying to move people out of the way as they bombard these areas before they move in on the ground. in the meantime, isrealis are working to secure every community along the border so they know there is no pal in stan jan militants, the death toll will keep rising, part of the reason we got that number, 900 deaths of civilian olders this is he see more people who were killed. we went with the military before when you saw
10:10 am
those cars that had been shot. the civilians were removed but bodies of militants in the field next to the cars. this is a war zone at a level the middle east has not seen in a long time and it will take precision, it will take tenacity, a coordinated effort by the isrealis to do this in a way that will not only achieve their goals as they laid out, as prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying they intend to completely detroit hamas the group in control of the gaza strip in a way that sets hamas back and does not give the capability to kill more isrealis. the difficulty has to do with the civilian population in gaza. nearly 2,000,000 people live there, one of the most densely populated areas on earth, incredibly challenging to operate. we are looking at weeks and we weeks of violence in the region. >> john: this has to do with the hostages and the potential fate of the hostages. the armed wing
10:11 am
of hamas, brigade has sent out a warning to israel, it will begin executing an isreali civilian captive anytime there is an isreali bombing of a civilian residence without prewarning. now, as we've seen in the past, typically when israel, the idea mounts these bombing raids in gaza, if they are targeting a building, they'll tell people whether it be a text message or some other form of communication to get out and they've warned people to evacuate certain parts of gaza, but what do you make of this warning from the brigade that they will execute a captive if israel strikes any civilian targets without warning? >> trey: it's incredibly concerning. they are isis wanna bees, they did over the past 48
10:12 am
hours. it is horrific but it is indicative of what is to come. both sides will try to leverage the token that they have. israel's military force, captives, it will be difficult for the isrealis and public to distinguish between those who are alive and dead inside gaza. hamas is an organization built around propaganda, making people believe their side of the story and their cause. we know they have the bodies of isreali civilians it will be difficult to tell if they are executing people in gaza or bodies pulled back once they executed them in israel. it is hard to parse through that information, the information war that will run parallel to this conflict. i want to talk about gaza briefly, we spent many times reporting inside the gaza strip, not only in gaza city, further south in
10:13 am
the city of hanunes. we've gone to military parades, we've talked to civilians in gaza, there are nearly 2,000,000 people there. they are not all militants. not members of hamas. israel will need to operate in a way that protects civilian live. we talked with a source that indicated the civilian casualties are rising very well. that will be something to watch as this war continues and something to look at. because there are innocent women and children there that again have been told they need to go to the un schools and other places away from where this initial operation is expected to take place. >> sandra: trey, we're watching that live. trey, last hour we all watched you live outside that -- next to that police station, there were teams that
10:14 am
came to pull bodies from there. did you speak to those people that were doing that? did they say anything to you? >> trey: they didn't. and we found that a lot the images speaking for themselves. what they were doing earlier, they were looking to get all of the bodies out of the police station behind me. and you saw there live on our air as they stacked them into the back of a pickup truck, more than ten bodies. we're told it was a mixture of militants and isreali police officers sorted through and identified at another time when they are able to get away from the active front line here. this is just one scene of many across israel. and we know about that music festival where 260 people were mowed down by hamas militants when they entered southern israel. the scenes from there, we saw some drone video earlier "today showing" what this looked like and it was
10:15 am
clear that people were running for their lives, they ran to their cars, they were trying to get away when the heard gunfire erupt, they saw the rockets in the air but they were not quick enough. hamas coordinated this attack. they were entering from multiple different angles, using grenades, they were firing rockets. and the few police officers that were at that scene were overwhelmed almost immediately as militants worked their way through and executed. people who were simply attending a festival. sandra. john. >> john: you know, trey. a lot has been made of the failure of isreali intelligence to detect the planning of this particularly in light of this wall street journal article that came out yesterday with the revolution that the islamic revolutionary guard air cord of -- sometime in early august. and i heard someone this morning make the case that typically intelligence is geared toward high-tech planning, but that
10:16 am
this -- this attack that occurred on saturday morning was very low tech. it involved pickup trucks, it involved other passenger vehicles, just breaking through a barricade, it involved paraglider whose came into that music festival near the kibuts, it involved rubber boats that landed onshore. the fact that this is so low tech is that how it escaped detection? >> trey: it's hard to tell but it's a great question. because we had been to the gaza border multiple times and also there with the isreali military as they showed us what they called in our interview the most advanced border technology in the world. they have a barrier that goes deep underneath the gaza strip to prevent tunneling into israel. they have a large concrete wall, bashed wire at the top, balloon sensors, wall sensors, drones that hover overhead. the fact that they
10:17 am
were able to infiltrate this area at 20 different locations, it raises questions about how this could have slipped past isreali intelligence. and there are a lot of reports circling around today that we haven't been able to independently confirm indicating that the isrealis received a warn, one specifically from the egyptians, ten days ago that this could happen. and that they were planning an attack. and we were looking back at our reporting from the past two months and a deputy hamas official told the man newspaper in lebanon that they were preparing for an all out war. they said it 35 days ago. and about 40 days ago there were indications that hamas and islamic jihad planned to kidnap isrealis in southern israel and isreali officials put out a warning about it. so, having these little pieces of information trickle in, what the isrealis knew and didn't know, get down everyone. next to the
10:18 am
car. lay down flat. flat, cover your head. more rocket fire. loud explosions coming off. another time they are trying to overwhelm the iron dome again. i can see them coming off the gaza strip in multiple locations. >> trey: so, they tried to do it again. tried to overwhelm the iron dome missile defense system firing from multiple locations along the border, it sound like a few of those slipped past,
10:19 am
more rockets than explosions indicating that it certainly wasn't the 100% success rate. everyone okay? >> yeah. >> trey: stand up. thank you. all right. we are going to get up here. so, this is just a constant scene here in the southern part of the country, sandra and john. >> sandra: yes. >> trey: it is the reality how hamas and islamic jihad are starting this war. >> sandra: update the white house, the white house says the president has directed his team to follow-up on coordination with israel. and to continue work with regional partners to warn anyone who might seek to take advantage in this situation. i say that as the white house has been silent today, trey. with the president and his seem having called a lid in the 11:00 eastern time hour, which means we wouldn't see or
10:20 am
hear from the president. that is crossing per the white house he has directed his team to follow-up on coordination with israel. trey, we are looking at what now is in the thousands thousands of rockets fired by hamas. what can you tell us about what we know about how they are obtaining these rockets? >> trey: yes, they are able to make most of the rockets inside the gaza strip. hamas has gotten better with the help of countries like iran. they've received funding and support and instructions on how to build these rockets. some short range and some long range that they are able to fire from the gaza strip. they also have mortars and antitank weapons and rpg's that they use. the rocket fire have gotten much more advanced over the past several years. we know more than 4600 rockets have been fired over the past 48 hours into israel from gaza. not just from hamas and islamic jihad, the smaller fractions
10:21 am
have rockets. we've talked to them about their production in the past they say that they are learning and getting better all the time, these are the when os they use to choose this war in this ongoing conflict. what we should note is the number of rockets. i was inside gaza in 2014, the war that lasted for 51 days. there were less rockets fired over 51 days in 2014 than have been fired over the past 48 hours. that illustrates just how much of a massive escalation we are facing right now. as people on the ground watching this unfold as people here documenting the stories and it is -- it is a huge escalation, it covers this story for many years, three and four day rounds in 2021, a round between i real and gaza and they often end with a cease fire that is negotiated. efforts put forward by the
10:22 am
egyptians and the quattaris, israel have to give up something, often work permits to the gaza ns they will get peace and quiet. money to officials there. they are able to avoid a much larger war. what is happening today as we speak right now, is truly the nightmare scenario. it is the day everyone hoped would never come. the darkest day in israel's history. >> john: you know, trey, the frequency and the number of rockets that are going from gaza into israel to test the iron dome system, makes you wonder how long israel can continue to fight back with the iron dome system before they run into rockets themselves, which i know is something that the former speaker of the house kevin mccarthy was talking about this morning. i just want to rewind the clock for a moment to
10:23 am
saturday morning, and this was the supernova trans festival which is just east of the gaza strip. this is what happened when those paragliding -- and you can see them there in the sky, paragliding terrorists dropped into the festival. watch this. >> john: there you see the aftermath of that, trey, you were showing the aftermath as well with the -- with the officer from the ivf who was accompanying you. 260 bodies were taken out of that festival. of course a number of other
10:24 am
people probably at least an equal number were injured as well. and -- i guess a lot of people in the west are wondering, what did -- how did hamas hope to garner sympathy by going across the border and executing innocent civilians as they did? >> trey: i've talked with palestinian forces today in east jerusalem. people who live in east jerusalem palestinians find themselves different than those who live in gaza and the west bank, they have more rights, more freedom of movement. one person i talked to, palestinians are starting to change their minds, some of them about hamas, they saw the brutality inflicted on the civilian population. now i will say the mindset of palestinians in gaza is very different than those in east jerusalem. it raises the question what was the purpose,
10:25 am
did they feel it would win over -- what appeared to be progress toward a deal that would give more rights and even possibly state hood to the palestinians. if i could take you back to what it was like saturday morning here, it was something that is hard to describe. it was a moment where the whole world was unsure about what was taking place, and israel was unsure about what was taking place. we arrived in the south as the border incursion was happening. there were hamas and islamic jihad militants in the towns around where we were reporting, and we drove as far as we could toward the battle, got to the safest location possible, and started to report. and we watched as civilians brought victims of the shooting attacks to what turned into be a staging point to get people to better care deeper into israel at
10:26 am
hospitals. and we watched as mothers carried their wounded children who had been shot by hamas militants. the mothers just incomplete shock trying to get their kids into the ambulance and the children crying. we watched as soldiers brought their wounded and dead friends out of jeeps dragging them on to the pavement, trying to resuscitate them and then when they couldn't save one person go on to the next yet another jeep or civilian car was going to pull up with another victim of this attack. it was trauma experienced at a level israel has ever seen. so, the question of what this does for the palestinian people as a whole is an important question, something that will be discussed and studied in the weeks and months and years to come when this conflict that just erupted ultimately ends. but certainly not good and something that should be looked at with a critical eye because there are
10:27 am
millions of palestinians not just here that live in israel, in the best bank and gaza but also in lebanon and jordan. and they don't all support hamas. they don't support the slaughter of civilians that took place. >> sandra: trey, please stand by with us, please be safe. we are also getting this update from the white house that the president is going to be on the phone with our key american allies, that is expected to be happening in the coming hours. we'll look for any update from the white house on that. trey, thank you. >> john: yeah, white house also announcing that the president's traveling to philadelphia on friday to talk about bidenomics in the middle of all this. joining us from israel with very personal story is roz. he lost several friends in the attack on saturday and going door to door to help his community. thank you for joining us, the reason that you are going door to door is to collect samples of dna so that bodies that have been found in

this carnage can be identified and matched to family members. what is the situation there for you on the ground right now? >> hi, how are you doing? thank you very much. situation on the ground now is civilian who is living in the closest community, the gaza strip border, is kind of horrible. most of the people in my community we are -- a thousand people have been evacuated from the community. today it's almost empty. there is nobody there. yesterday as you said we finished identifying, identified bodies, where to go into the victims' houses to collect toothbrushes or hair brushes or any dirty clothes that might have sweat on them or dna sample of any kind. entering houses that were scene

this time it is going to be a whole different scenario. we are not expecting another hit from the air unless, blow down some tours and some buildings, they will fight back. you know, what took us complete surprise on saturday and actually almost broke the spirit of isrealis, just mentioned, we are strong. we've suffered a trauma that has not been at least not my generation, not experienced yet. maybe even being in 73, but it took us through this now we are gaining back our powers, army's well organized back. recruiting reserves, our spirits are high. we are working on our minds and we are starting to be stronger, basically the minds that we have like the old lady mentioned. stand back on our legs and who comes to kill us will be killed first. we are strong. we will
