7:00 a.m. in gaza, this is our continuing breaking news coverage of the war be israel on america's late news, fox news at night. >> trace: and this is now a live look in gaza city, the sun has just risen a few minutes ago. and over the past few days when you look at this picture on the right-hand side of the screen, this is about the time that isreali forces would unleash a barrage of air strikes. they did that be the very early morning hours and right now in gaza city, it appears to be somewhat quiet. but there are some 300,000 isreali troops now on the border with gaza waiting for word to begin. what appears to be a major ground assault. the death toll is also rising with each side losing upwards of a thousand people, 22 americans are confirmed dead and 17 remain unaccounted for. as the biden administration scrambles to rescue u.s. citizens held hostage by hamas. we begin with
9:02 pm
the senior foreign affairs correspondent greg palkot, live in ashkelon, israel. >> we entered day six of this israel hamas war. as you mentioned we have seen a series of isreali air strikes on various infrastructure targets of the hamas militants inside the gaza strip. various flashes, we heard the rumble from here indicating that many many militant targets were hit. the militants have been doing their own action in the air as well. we were in the city of ashkelon and rockets rained on that town. iron dome defenses as it so often does of israel was able to
9:03 pm
shield those rockets from hitting this major city. but yes, the war continues and the grim toll builds as you indicated, 1200 dead so far here in israel. that includes those americans, the 22. and the hostages, that's a wildcard, 150 of them inside of the gaza strip acting basically as human shields for hamas militants. making what you mentioned a ground invasion of gaza is much more complicated. we've been watching the last couple days, the buildup of tank, armored vehicles, reservists coming in, 350,000 reservists have been called up in addition to the standing army of the -- of israel, there is a major military base here in ashdod. a
9:04 pm
lot of people going in there. but we've also seen indications the last couple days of still infiltration by hamas milli ants into southern israel. near ashkelon a certain area there was still tension and military zone thrown around that area. that's where we stand right now. could be another busy day, back to you, trace. >> trace: yeah, greg palkot live at the gaza border. let's bring informer i real i ambassador to the un. danny denon. back and forth how much involvement iran has had. funding hezbollah bowl a and hamas. john kirby said this about iran's involvement of the attack in israel. >> we haven't seen anything they
9:05 pm
cut checks in support of this these attacks, obviously this required quite a bit of training by these terrorists. or that they were involved in any directing of the operation. >> trace: it seems a little disingenuous to say, listen, we haven't seen any cashed checks that iran wrote to hamas so therefore we can't really say they were directly involved. >> that's the main idea for having a proxy that you can fund them, you can train them, can you attack and then you can tell i don't know what you are talking about. trace, look coming in from tehran yesterday, praised this barbaric attack. nations supporting this viscous attack. it's obviously they wanted to be behind it, involved in that and i think for us that
9:06 pm
is why now when we are starting to put ourselves together, we are still reeling the death of more than 1000 isrealis massacred last saturday. we are getting ready for the retaliation. so, we are going to send a message to tehran. you will see what happens to hamas, that is message to -- don't mess with us, we are in pain but we are strong and i can assure you the scene that will be shown around the world also in tehran they will face. >> trace: here is a come who spent 36 hours in a bomb shelter near the gaza border, listen to her. >> can't imagine terrorists in your city. the terrorists were posting proudly pictures of people they killed. just in my neighborhood, they were filming them and posting it on telegram
9:07 pm
and this is how -- this was the first time i think i realized that brutal things are happening. >> trace: more than bad and brutal, this is terrorism, barbaric terrorism, your final thoughts on this. >> you know, we are seeing terror attacks in the past but when you see 1000 terrorists entering civilian cities and communities and committing such atrocities that's beyond imagination, you know, you do have experience 9/11, this is 9/11 for us hear in israel. every day we see more and more horrible pictures. yesterday the bodies of children, of babies being burned alive. when you see barbaric behavior, we are on the front line against evil, we will prevail, we will win. this is a fight for democracy, that's why
9:08 pm
we have to win this fight. >> trace: ambassador, thank you for coming on, we appreciate it, sir. >> thank you, trace. >> trace: about 22 americans are now confirmed dead in the attack on israel, a number expected to grow. marion with more on that start of the story. >> trace, there is very little information for american families who are in anguish as the white house isn't confirming where these americans died and deferred those questions to the state department as u.s. officials determine were u.s. americans killed or taken hostage. >> these reports are devastating. we are hearing reports of entire families, innocents, who were killed in the safety of their homes. we know that so far 22 americans lost their lives and 17 remain unaccounted for. >> and administration officials say they believe that number could rise as the identities of
9:09 pm
the 22 americans have yet to be made public. but according to some reports, that likely includes a mother who used her own body to shield her son from a barrage of bullets. anthony blinken is set to meet with counterparts in the region and he made this stark assessment. >> every day we're learning more. and it is simply heartbreaking. not since isis have we seen this kind of depravity and we will continue to stand resolutely against it. >> and the white house says its top priority is to get americans who remain in that region out. trace. >> trace: of i can't, mary ann, thank you. meantime we are told the biden administration is working behind the scenes. and there is work tonight a major law enforcement group might be involved. jeff paul is live with the latest on the u.s. rescue efforts, jeff. >> national security council john kirby said not only is the white house in discussion with
9:10 pm
israel, but they are also talking to other allies and partners in the region, they are casting a wide net but still a lot of unanswered questions. >> where they are and in what condition, no. sadly we don't know. and that makes efforts very very difficult. again, in these early hours, we don't know. we don't know if they are in one group or broken up into several groups, we didn't know if they are moved to what frequency and locations, all those questions we are working hard to answer. >> there are roughly 17 americans who are unaccounted for at the moment. kirby admit that number could fluctuate depending on if they are found safe and sound. as far as sending in any american forces into places like gaza to rescue any of those potential hostages, the white house hadn't made any operational decisions. when asked john kirby admitted they don't have enough information right now to make that move. defense secretary lloyd austin says the u.s. has people on the

ground in israel to help with intelligence and planning in regard to hostage recovery making comments in brussels for a meeting for the north atlantic triteee organization. >> for anyone thinking about trying to take advantage of the agony in israel, to try to biden this conflict, spill more glad, we have one word. don't. >> president biden also vowed to work every aspect regarding the hostage crisis in israel. but he says when it comes to specifics, he said it would be bizarre to discuss those steps. his administration is currently taking to bringing everyone hopefully home. >> trace: jeff, thank you, former fbi agent nicole park, navy seal special forces cameron hamilton. former fbi negotiator, he said this about recovering
9:12 pm
hostages. quoting here "it's not -- it's just not clear why the hostages were taken and exactly by who are these little gangs or groups not part of the main infrastructure? were they taken to negotiate? we didn't know yet. that effects how we deal with this. we can't make assumption is just yet. it really is, nicole, getting very tricky if you don't have good intel about where these people might or might not be. >> right, that's important for the fbi right now. i believe that the fbi likely sent in critical innocent response group, they are highly specialized groups that deals with these type of situations all the time when americans are found in a crisis situation. of course this is unique, this is in israel. any services that are offered it is going to be used at the permission and request of the host country which in this situation would be israel. but the key is to work together with our international counterparts and to get as much information
9:13 pm
and intelligence about where these individuals are and fbi to assist and bringing them home safely. >> trace: we can see the right-hand side. we've just seen explosions, you can see the smoke there. i couldn't hear them but those on the ground clearly clamoring to get a better shot of this. gaza city again, air strikes before dawn were plentiful. now it looks like the action is back on. we are still waiting for 300,000 troops amassed along the border to get the word to go in for ground invasion. john kirby said this about american hostages being held, watch. >> we know that a number of those americans are being held hostage right now by hamas. i think we all need to steal ourselves for the distinct possibility that these numbers will keep increasing and that we
9:14 pm
may in fact find out that more americans are part of the hostage pool. >> trace: and cameron, as the numbers may or may not in crease does that change the tactic? does it change the way that these rescue teams, these idea forces go in and try and look for these people? >> not entirely, trace. thank you for having me again. ultimately the plan of action will be for them to identify where they are being held and the best means to attack it. we have some amazing u.s., you know, affiliates and military, service members that have extensive experience in these kind of fields, israel has its own experience from years fighting in conflict in this manner. what they will do is use the teals available, the technology, the resources and experience of other past conflicts so as to find a way to exploit and bring these hostages home safely. >> trace: i'm wondering nicole, as you watch this scene play
9:15 pm
out, there is talk about maybe instead of sending people in right away, many said you have to get them in there right away, including cameron. if there is any kind of negotiations, would you expect possibly for americans that maybe the fbi would give some instruction in that capacity? >> you know, i can't say for certain what they are doing in this exact circumstance, there are hostage negotiators, we have hostage rescue teams and they will be working closely with isrealis and the law enforce., the military, whatever is deemed appropriate. it's important to realize hamas is using serious psychological operations. they are doing sigh ons, they are tormenting, these victims' families, the torment, the pain that they are excruciatingly painful images that we are seeing coming out, they are finding pleasure and it's abhorrent and discussing and evil and sick. these are very
9:16 pm
very evil individuals that we are dealing with. and they are succeeding. be their psychological operations and cause ago lot of damage and harm and the unknowns for these victims' families. the fbi has a victim services department they are working closely with the victims families and state department as well. >> trace: yeah, nicole, cameron, thank you for your insight we very much appreciate it. president biden is naming names arrest failing to mention iran in his address to the nation on tuesday. national correspondent kevin corke with the president's cryptic message. >> it was also a warning, today the president telling iran "be careful" obviously he wants to warn them against getting involved in israel's conflict with hamas and growing fears of a wider regional conflict. >> we moved the u.s. carrier

fleet to eastern mediterranean, sending more fighter jets to that region. and made it clear, made it clear to the iranians, be careful. >> critics however are suggesting the administration is really trying to have it both ways. they are warning iran be careful. on the other hand they are going to great lengths to suggest that maybe the regime had nothing to do with the attacks. >> we haven't seen anything that tells us they specifically cut checks to support this set of attacks. or that they were involved in the training. >> did you notice the passing there. specifically cut checks, participated in the training, you know, sometimes have you to read between the lines to really understand what's being said and what is not being said. a growing number of congressional lawmakers are blocking iran accessing the $6 billion in funds that the biden administration released back in

august. tom cotton and mitch mcconnell spearing heading that. >> trace: i want to bring in quickly breaking news coming from sky news, the secretary of state anthony blinken meeting abass in the jordanian capital after his brief visit with visit of prime minister benjamin netanyahu. this is the first time that they have met. it's important to understand the context here because abass and hamas, runs the palestinian authority, bitter enemies with hamas. so, he would not help in any kind of negotiation for this, only with possibly those in the west bank not in gaza. but it's breaking news we thought you should know. let's bring in elon carr ceo of the isrealis -- for iran. i was
9:19 pm
telling elon i would put this up i think this is important because now we have seen all of these colleges, protesting, right? and protesting israel and coming out in favor of palestine. ucla has actually, some professors are giving credit, i would like to say this, this is i would like to share an extra credit opportunity happening tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. so, today, it's an emergency teach-in on the crisis in palestine convened by professor, i am not going to name it from english and comparative literature and another professor at the law school, they are giving extra credit if you as a student of the ucla law school show up and protest israel. >> doesn't that tell you everything you need to know about the state of our universities. what type of twisted morality to give
9:20 pm
facility or implicit support after what we have seen is a genocidal anti-semitic massacre in israel including children who were shot, beheaded, people burned alive and they are standing up in universities and giving tacit support of this, it's outrageous, despicable. >> trace: i'm wondering what you think as you see this, len, you look at the landscape, gaza city, 7:19 in the morning there and you are on the verge of seeing this ground invasion. what do you anticipate will happen in the hours, the minutes and hours to come? >> first of all i want to follow-up on the answer. i have a couple kids in college, college campuses are no longer safe to jewish students. whether -- this is pervasive. and it's

completely against academic freedom, it's against freedom of speech. and, you know, i don't know as a parent it's very hard to deal with on a daily basis. it's something that needs to be addressed. and we -- you know, it's another element of the issue that undermines the kind of freedoms that we have in the united states and gives fuel to the hate groups that create -- toward jews. >> trace: what about the squad, members of congress, that's what you get to, members of congress on the far left that are also kind of, you know, spewing this rhetoric. >> well of course. so, all of those people that are supporting these barbaric terrorists are the people that vote for rashida tlibe and omar and give them cover. of course, it's shameful. you know, they would not be able to do this in any other country
