for all of us to have those people all their life worked and fight for human rights to be taken by the most human of popossiblethings somebody can d. the five grandson seeking the release of his grandparents taken hostage during hamas campaign of terror on israel last week for the clock is ticking for civilians to evacuate more than gaza as israel readies a ground invasion and response so horrified terror attacks but hello welcome to a brand-new hour of "fox news live" i am arthel double. eric: i'm eric shawn thank you for joining us. more than 1 million people living in the northern half of the gaza strip limit warned by y israel to move south the below the river as the israeli military is preparing apparently to launch an attack, root out and destroy and annihilate the
1:02 pm
terrorist of hamas. prime minister benjamin netanyahu today telling them on the front line with the terrorist is coming. the countries called up about three to 60000 troops and reservists. they have amassed forces along the border with gaza. former israeli prime minister the wart will not end until hamas' complete crust requested to see pure face of evil. we hunted them down and they are dead because we cannot, as we have learned the bitter way and the painful we cannot leave the terrorist organization on our border people are beheading our children and raping women and acting like the new isis here in israel. so this will and with the end of hamas. eric: senior correspondent mike tobin is with the latest there.
1:03 pm
>> eric, i can hear israeli drones overhead with the canon's thunder into the night into the gaza strip. we see troops and armored positions positioning themselves up and down the length of the gaza strip's the israeli defense forces troops are increasing their operational preparedness with a particular emphasis on ground operations. prime minister benjamin netanyahu came here to the outskirts of the gaza strip to visit the israeli soldiers the camps were they are staging from the next stage of the operation and he asked them are they ready? >> are you ready for the next stage, the next stage is coming. the head of israel search and rescue toured it's one of the kibbutz attacked a scene of great human carnage for to use it as an example of why this ground operation is necessary. >> this is exactly the reason that we need to clear this
1:04 pm
region. not only the perimeter around the kibbutz it. all this region we must clear from this kind of threat if we want, if we want to provide our citizens the security, the protection that we could not give them. we need to do the right thing right now. >> there are foreign nationals inside the gaza population and that includes u.s. citizens. u.s. citizens got the notification to head to the southern end of the gaza strip the rafah border crossing into egypt. there was an agreement the rafah border crossing was supposed to be open for that never happened u.s. citizens are still stuck in

the gaza strip with the ground operation pending. back to you. >> more about what's about the americans there who are stuck and do we know anything else about the president into egypt? he has denied the palestinians request to start refugee camps on his site he does not want people from gaza flowing over into egypt in the new develop it's on that to try and relieve the humanitarian situation? >> really we don't know any new developments with them but we know the egyptians had generally been pretty paranoid about the palestinians frankly becoming their problem in egypt. but i do know from one american who was there, they waited all day long the state department told him to be there in the event the rafah crossing opens it would happen abruptly so far nobody is getting out. arthel: hamas terrorist firing mortars at israel as both sides
1:06 pm
continue to exchange fire. the israeli military says overnight strikes on gaza that killed two hamas commanders the idf said the mastermind of last week's surprise attack is still out there let's bring in dan hoffman former ci a station chief and fox news contributor. dan first of all your reaction to the murders of hamas commanders does this affect the psyche of these terrorist fighters? >> no. they are suicidal. they launch those are brutal attacks in israel and murdered innocent israeli civilians and then deliberately inundated social media with all of the evidence for the videos and the gruesome pictures we have all seen. they did that because they know when they want israel to have no choice but to enter gaza because deterrents have failed and because it needs to ensure hamas could no longer have a threat.
1:07 pm
it's counterintuitive but hamas is a bloodied battle even if they are all killed at the end of the day. they want to midwife another generation between jews and arabs and that is what they are after. as many as their own people they sacrifice and obviously the israeli citizens whom they brutally murdered. that is their cause. sadly we are seeing protests all around the world including in our own city of new york where people unfortunately conflate palestinian civilians and their plates with hamas terrorism. the five know, that is not the case there palestinian civilians who don't even like hamas they have no choice of the rule of hamas over their communities. let me move on to this. i just want to ask you, were you surprised at all by the strategic barbaric this attack was planned were you surprised they were able to pull this off?
1:08 pm
>> that was a surprise ending to israel but let me make one comment on what you said. the palestinians are absolutely pawns of hamas and are being used as human shields. but what i am saying is some of those out protesting are not recognizing what hamas has been doing to the innocent israeli said civilians when they are protesting which is a shame. this was a complete surprise. a massive intelligence failure but have no doubt iran provided hamas with significant assistance and intelligence sharing so hamas would know how to target israel. hamas use drones to target israel surveillance and communications towers they knew where to go pray they had their maps of israeli military facilities but h rev no doubt in assisted hamas not of the tactics of how to collect the information but may beat with the information itself because
1:09 pm
iran focuses so much on collecting intelligence on israel. ever hear what you're saying those protesters should be very well aware of the less than human like treatments they are subjecting on those poor israeli innocent civilians. let me say this, earlier doctor rebecca grant said quote hamas is overextended. do you agree question or tell me that and talk to us about the idea of the retaliation plant how can they execute the execution of the hamas tears? >> well, i do not know that hamas is overextended they own pretty significant home-field advantage. this is going to be a cauldron once israel amo mounts the groud offensive. now israel has softened up the targets targeted lots of the high-rise buildings which makes it more difficult for hamas but hamas still has all the tunnels they constructed over the years. they have roughly 30 -- 50000
1:10 pm
fighters. the israeli defense forces their intelligence services will need to prepare an order of battle. it is important for israel to distinguish among enemy combatants that is the hamas terrorists their security services and police and distinguish them from innocent civilians while concurrently looking for hostages and freeing them and avoiding any friendly fire. that is an extraordinary challenge for the israeli defense forces. arthel: extraordinarily indeed challenge there. dan, you mention the hostages how can the cia and the fbi assist with freeing the americans being held hostage? >> well, i know we are flooding this out with as much intelligence collection as possible on hamas and on those hostages.
1:11 pm
we come to the extent we know who is being held wheat may be able to collect intelligence that will assist israel but this is going to be an israeli defense force ground operation. israel has extraordinarily effective capabilities when it comes to hostage rescue. viewers will recall the raid and a 1979 where they rescued hostages and in fact benjamin netanyahu's brother was killed and that rated. israel is very adept at freeing hostages i know from first-hand experience of having worked with their intelligence services. if there is a chance of getting a hostage out israel is going to succeed at doing it. but hamas on the other end is going to use them as human shields. that is why i think right now at least israel is trying to find some way maybe to negotiate a way to conduct a hostage release. through the good offices of qatar but so far have been unsuccessful. arthel: let's hope for success for sure broke out about 40
1:12 pm
seconds with you d the dam but quickly, as reported in the wall street journal i want to read the reaction of one of the u.s. officials on the efforts to destroy hamas he says or they say if you destroy it hamas what's going to fill the vacuum? you destroyed al qaeda you get isis you destroy hamas you get hamas 2.0 but what happens after idf goes into gaza and annihilates the terrorists? >> that is the big question for i think post hamas is the gaza demilitarized zone and who's going to control it? i don't think israel was to reoccupy gaza if you sit you had peacekeepers what about the palestinian authority they are very weak and their leader is not popular at all. they've already shown they are incapable of dealing with gaza. i think israel is going to need to rely on other states in the region like egypt and jordan and qatar. not to mention saudi arabia and the united states. this is going to be a challenge but at the end of the day iran
1:13 pm
has been pulling the strings in gaza israel has to be prepared for a run continuing to mount the same sort of nefarious activities we have seen where they seek to embolden and provide material assistance to the next group of terrorists who will seek to launch attacks on israel from gaza parade this it needs to be a permanent solution here for israel it is going to be very difficult to do it for special in the wake of what we expect to be an extremely bloodied conflict. arthel: iran is the head of the snake that needs to be cut off. dan hoffman, thank you dan. >> thanks. eric: we are just learning at the white house the president says -- make this president spoke with benjamin netanyahu earlier this afternoon no details at the moment about exactly what the details were on that phone conversation but one can imagine. this comes as a president also reportedly talked with the head of the palestinian authority

david spotts with more on the situation there. >> hi eric we are working to confirm the report the president spoke with has a palestinian counterpart. we have some information about the phone call from his call with president netanyahu and israel the biden and netanyahu spoke for the fifth time. netanyahu think biden for unwavering support helping israel to defend itself also secretary of state blinken and defense secretary lloyd austin. the priority for the white house for the president, the president has been at the white house today presumably working on the situation, has been to get those americans that are in danger out of danger and home safely paired here's a preview of it interview he did was 60 minutes that is airing tomorrow, watch. >> to those holding american hostages in gaza that you say what? >> i say we are going to do

1:16 pm
this never happens again it is vitally important that all of us look out for civilians. >> blinken said pointblank hamas is a terrorist group both agrees the safe passage for civilians is crucial resources tell my colleague that the u.s. urged israel to delay some sort of ground invasion to gaza until a safe passage was out to pray the president says death is his biggest concern when it comes to any potential ground war. a ground war that appears to be evidence according to our resources that are there in israel. meanwhile the white house continues to watch this closely. nothing official from the white house today on the president's cult with either or netanyahu as a way to see with the white house has disabled this important phone calls. to david thanks so much, arthel? c5 the war against israel's front and center for public and candidates there running for president. many of them are campaigning in new hampshire today.

talking about the potential of destroying hamas once and for all. but rooting out the terrorists in gaza in the urban and density of the strip it's a daunting challenge for israeli forces are gearing up for what is likely to be intense guerrilla warfare the incursion to the northern part of the gaza strip begins. lou tired lieutenant colonel and afghanistan senior fellow defadefense priorities. defense. the challengers seem to be immense israel has got into gaza before. what do you expect could be coming over the next few days? >> they have gone into gaza before it has been a limited and targeted operation. it's never been to eliminate the terrorist group of hamas. they are anywhere from 30 -- 50000 fighters. no one knows for sure how many there are. but it is a significant number. this problem is so much more difficult than you can imagine.
1:28 pm
number one, what are the rules of engagement for israel? how will they even know who is a hamas fighter and who is a palestinian man who happens to be in the direction of the israeli attack? nearly everybody is armed in the part of the world and in that part of gaza for self-defense. and of course no israeli soldiers going to withhold fire if he sees a palestinian man with a weapon. that could end up killing thousands of people who are not part of hamas i just do not know how they're going to get this done without either killing a large number of people or secondly suffering a lot of casualties as they try to go slow. but everybody be clear eyed this is going to be a very bloodied situation for the israeli defense force and for the palestinians in the gaza strip. eric: talk about what they're doing now softening of the area. they have basically israeli intelligence has targeted the homes, the houses, the offices of hamas the hamas leadership the top hamas officers flatten

the homes and killed some of the leaders. is that enough to decapitate some of the leaders and up the rest as you mentioned 30,000 or so armed terrorists? >> no chance at all. you do not have to look any further we took out osama bin laden that did nothing to the al qaeda accep except the put anoty in charge. lisa al-baghdadi from ice is taken out had no impact on the organization they just replaced him i saw this myself many times in my deployments to afghanistan for every time we would take out a taliban leader there would be another went right away to take his place the fight would go on. there's just too many people there. the other issue that is important to understand is even if you somehow managed to kill all of the hamas people you cannot destroy the intellectual the mental situation the islamic jihad in the area predict conditions that led to the rise of hamas are infinitely worse
1:30 pm
than they were before and israel's going to have to come to grips with that they could literally win it tactically and still lose strategically because the threat will remain. eric: that's a final port how do you defeat the mentality and the in thephilosophy of radical islc terrorism? it's like the nazis how do you defeat the hatred and anger and the desire to behead babies? >> eric you don't. that is the blunt unpleasant truth of it. you do not destroy that. and because of all of the heinous destruction that happened with a hamas trying to debate israel into an overreaction may be tried to pull the united states in because i think they want to expand this beyond the gaza strip it is our intent to make sure it stays in the gaza strip that's what they're going to want to do that clearly do not care about anyone's life theirs or anyone else's. they are going to continue to fight no matter what happens the opportunity for some kind of negotiated settlement was on the
