israel from the global press? >> why is great question, todd. the "new york times," associated press, politico, "the washington post," cnn, i could go down the line of all these outlets you saw on social media yesterday immediately and definitively say that israel was responsible for that missile hitting that hospital killing hundreds of people with zero verification in that regard. there is plenty of evidence that says otherwise. kudos to president biden for saying that he has seen the evidence that says this was not carried out by israel but by islamic jihad basically who works in league with hamas. here's the problem now. we see embassies all over the world now u.s. embassies being attacked, basically because of this lie. and the u.s. media enabled it. >> carley: we concerned that this hot situation is only going to get hotter. joe, got to leave it there. >> thank you. >> carley: "fox & friends" starts right now.
3:01 am
>> steve: it is 1:00 in the afternoon in israel. we start this hour of "fox & friends" with a fox news alert. right now, president biden is in israel meeting with the prime minister there, benjamin netanyahu behind closed doors with their staffs. the two leaders met in front of cameras in tel aviv less than an hour ago. >> ainsley: during brief remarks biden blamed terrorist forces for an explosion in gaza last night that has killed hundreds of people. listen. >> outrage by the explosion at the hospital in gaza yesterday. based on what i have seen it appears as though [inaudible] people out not sure. >> brian: yes using closed caption there. fiercest protests explosion as many jumped at blaming israel for, including the rest of the world. rioters in lebanon setting fire to u.s. embassy in beirut.
3:02 am
hezbollah calls for unprecedented day of anger. >> lawrence: while the president is overseas, many in the jewish community here at home are feeling the effects of the war. i will be live all morning talking to some of first check in with trey yingst. i know the president is on the ground but everybody is talking about this attack on the hospital. what can you tell us? >> trey: yeah, guys, good morning. today, u.s. president joe biden arriving in israel at the airport just outside of tel aviv. he was greeted in person by israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and israeli president isaac herzog. this is not just a visit for support but visit for planning. overnight the ahli hospital saw massive explosion and deaths of
3:03 am
palestinians according to reports. we spent the night talking with gazans, military officials, trying to get a sense of exactly what happened. we know amid the fog of war there can be a lot of misinformation. our goal here is to get as many pieces of evidence as possible and present them to you. this is what we know the play-by-play. last night there was explosion at the al-ahli hospital in gaza city. hundreds were sheltering there. after the explosion hamas the group in control of gaza blamed israelis saying airstrike. we reached out to the israelis. israelis told us they were investigating and gathering information. a short time later they released a statement saying their investigation continued and ultimately they started to release evidence indicating they say this was islamic jihad rocket. islamic jihad second largest faction behind hamas. fired toward israel. went up in the air and fell short in this hospital yard. this morning i have been speaking with sources inside gaza who were at the site of that hospital.
3:04 am
they sent me video minutes long showing the aftermath of this. there is no impact crater. there is a lot of shrapnel and lot of bodies of palestinians that were killed there. again, the latest information we have about that hospital from the israelis indicating it was islamic jihad rocket that fell short inside gaza. behind me you can hear explosions here that's outgoing artillery. traveling with the israeli military toward the site of the gaza border. i want to discuss the response from the arab world following that hospital explosion yesterday. there were massive protests not only in oman jordan at the israeli embassy there. beirut outside the u.s. embassy. istanbul outside the israeli consulate. people taking that initial information and running with it. blaming the israelis for what happened in gaza and it really has ignited an already flammable situation across the middle east. guys, back to you. >> brian: trey, what's pretty amazing to me now that the transcript is out of the intercept. now that video is apparent. it's even on al jazeera, it's
3:05 am
obvious if you go back and forth that this at the very least, hardly a cut and dry situation with the israelis hit the hospital, it's going the other direction. i understand people on the street might not get it how could king abdullah, general el-sisi how could others in the region cancel meetings and quickly assume that israel blew up a hospital? didn't you -- are you surprised by that? >> trey: i'm not surprised by that look, there are politics at play amid the fog of war here. and we know president biden was supposed to have a very important meeting with palestinian president mahmoud abbas. that meeting was canceled in response despite the evidence following this hospital explosion, both the king of jordan and top egyptian leadership in cairo, many countries in the gulf including qatar and bahrain immediately blamed israel. the reality of war, especially in the middle east, is that
3:06 am
people take sides. it's part of our job to gather as much information as we can cut through the emotion, and try to gather the facts on the ground. the facts that we have point to this being a failed launch inside gaza. >> ainsley: trey, when you look at iran ayatollah blames america. merge is responsible for this. u.s. is responsible for the recent crimes. the bombings must stop immediately. iran's foreign minister is declaring time is over for israel. that same message was posted by iran's embassy on one of the social media sites in syria in hebrew. what does that mean? what does it meantime it is over for israel? >> trey: let's go back to president biden's visit. because it's critical. like i said, this is not just a show of support shaking hans ans and hug on the tarmac. this is legitimate planning meeting. understanding when israel enters the gaza strip and according to our sources here, they will launch a ground invasion. it's not a matter of if but
3:07 am
rather when in response to that massacre 12 days ago in southern israel. they plan to go and destroy hamas. when that happens, some analysts believe hezbollah, the largest iranian proxy in the middle east will immediately start firing on israel, not just in the north but across this country. they have thousands of precision guided missiles, they have rockets. they have their own artillery and they have thousands of fighters who could be used in a ground operation. so the americans have to make a decision about how they will support their key middle east ally, israel. that's the question right now about what those plans look like and what the level of american support will be. and that is why president biden is here. it's not just to show support to the israeli people but also understanding that this very quickly is unraveling with the possibility of turning into a regional war. >> steve: that is the big worry, that's why the president is with the israeli war cabinet right now. we understand in addition -- and i'm sure you saw, this trey. while they canceled the meeting in jordan with the president of
3:08 am
egypt and jordan and palestinian authority, apparently, according to john kirby, who is traveling with the president, the president is expected to speak on the phone with the egyptian president and the palestinian authority president on the flight home. so, you know how this works. if the president is going to go somewhere, and today is actually historic because it's the first time a u.s. president has ever visited israel at a time of war. if he is going to go some place, when he leaves, he has got to say okay, i went and i got this. don't you think the deliverable for this will probably be he is going to negotiate some sort of owning of the rafah crossing so that humanitarian aid can get in and that would probably offset some of the anger regarding the hospital hit? >> trey: so i don't want to speculate on what he will come out of this meeting with because everything is changing by the hour and it's unpredictable but i will tell you a little bit about the rafah crossing.
3:09 am
yesterday i spoke with a palestinian american. a woman from utah. you might have heard the audio of that conversation. i got her permission to run it on fox. and i just played it straight into the microphone. she said we are trapped. where is our government? we know according to intelligence source there's are hundreds of american citizens and we are not talking about hostages. we are talking about people visiting gaza. they were visiting family. they were working for aid organizations that are currently stuck inside the strip. this woman, an american citizen told fox news she tried to cross three separate times in coordination with the state department telling her to go to the southern rafah crossing with egypt and she said one of those times the crossing was bombed. so she is very fearful. and she has been talking to me over text message saying they will continue to try to leaf. there are hundreds of americans there and they don't know when they are going to get out. it's a great point. one deliverable could be from president biden is trying to negotiate aid getting into gaza in exchange for that border being opened and at least letting some of the pressure off
3:10 am
the foreigners in the southern part of gaza right now. >> brian: trey, who is bombing? that can't be israel. they are not going to bomb down south at a crossing, are they? >> trey: the israelis. >> brian: the israelis are bombing the rafah crossing? >> correct. >> steve: the access roads. >> ainsley: lawrence, i want to get a question in for you, too. rafah gate. when we keep showing the video of that gate. it doesn't look like there are thousands and thousands of people waiting to cross when they do open the gate like we would expect. we just see that one image. i'm not sure, can you describe what we see when you show that? >> so we were told by this source inside gaza, an american citizen, there are hundreds of americans trying to cross. she said there are other foreign nationals as well. a staging area, a waiting area where people would normally fill out paperwork when they are going to cross the border. she said that's where many families have been waiting. they bring whatever they have them in the morning they get there before 9:00 a.m. like they
3:11 am
are told by the state department and stay throughout the day waiting for the crossing to hope. she is supposed to text me if she is able to cross. she has not yet texted me today indicating they have been able to get into egypt. why the israelis would target the crossing, look, there is act tirst all across the gaza strip. we are not just talking about hamas and islamic jihad. there are smaller palestinian groups that do have rockets and fighters throughout gaza. they are not just in the northern part of the gaza strip. they are in these other major population centers in gaza. and as we saw yesterday, a top hamas commander, likely the highest ranking commander that has been killed by the israelis since this war erupted was hiding in a refugee camp in the middle support of the gaza strip. and we got the video before the israelis knew that this was a successful kill. we spoke with a palestinian inside gaza who confirmed to us they killed this top communications commander from hamas. so, give you a sense of where these guys are inside the strip, and where some of the top
3:12 am
officials are hiding, it is among the civilian population. >> steve: indeed. trey, as folks are looking in at home, the images that you see on the right part of the screen because -- in the aftermath of the hospital bombing, a general strike has been called in the west bank to protest it. shops and banks and universities are closed and protesters are calling for the ouster of the palestinian authority president abbas for not doing enough. trey, thank you very much. let's bring in morgan ortagus former state department spokesperson. lawrence, why don't you lead off the questions for morgan. >> lawrence: thank you, steve. morgan, thank you so much for joining the program. we know that you have been stationed overseas. everyone is reacting though hospital bombing. hamas is leading their disinformation campaign. americans back at home, they are afraid about our embassies. we don't want another bengals. benghazi.what can do to keep th,
3:13 am
americans safe that operate at these embassies? >> well, we do have marines stationed at our u.s. embassies around the world. we have every right to be concerned especially after what we saw happen at the u.s. embassy in beirut and lebanon, also in iraq. during the trump administration, in january of 2020, we actually had many she a militias which are, again, funded and directed by iran, just like they are with hamas and hezbollah that were attacking the u.s. embassy. and under secretary of state mike pompeo and president trump we took decisive action at the time and we sent messages directly to the iranians, lawrence, where we said if any of these she a militias, if any of these people touch the american embassies, kill, hurt an american, we're going to hold you directly responsible. and why does that matter, lawrence? because we have to have deterrence in place again. right now iran knows that their proxies, hamas, hezbollah, whomever, whatever she a militias in iraq and syria are
3:14 am
operating, they know that they can get away now with killing 30 americans and having at least 15 americans hostages. what price is iran paying today for the fact that 30 americans are dead by their funding, by their training and by their equipping, so far, nothing. >> ainsley: when it comes to lebanon there is a do not travel advisory by our state department. you were the spokesperson for the state department. so i want to ask you about that. and there are lots of fires going on around our embassy there or the israeli embassy there as well. and they are calling -- hezbollah is calling for a day of unprecedented anger. lots of people are mad about that hospital bombing and they are blaming the -- they are blaming america but they are saying this is israel that did that. >> well, and what's worse is even there are sitting members of the u.s. congress who immediately treated rushed to blame israel. >> ainsley: the squad. >> of course we later learned that wasn't the fact.
3:15 am
when you look at those tweets from rashida tlaib for example, i found the tweet she issued against president biden to be incredibly threatening. language that i just do not think a member of congress should be using, threatening the president for his stance. furthermore, these members of congress who tweeted this disinformation out, they are directly putting american lives, american diplomats, american marines, they are putting them in harm's way by spreading this disinformation. they should immediately delete these tweets. they should apologize for the disinformation and they should understand that their words have consequences. there are ramifications. and if any american service members or diplomats, god forbid, are in harm's way. part of it is due to the disinformation being spread not just by people in the region, not just by terrorist groups but by some of our own members of congress. it's highly irresponsible. >> brian: morgan, how many billions do we give jordan? how many billions do we give egypt? you got to be kidding me, to
3:16 am
break off a meeting with the president on things that was dicey to begin with and now proven that israel has nothing to do with and to disrespect the president like that? are you kidding? and to not get it back on track now that the transcripts are out. more everyday is there. forget about the street. they could go see the video. it's online. to disrespect the president is disrespecting this country. i mean, there has got to be something you can do to take a hard line behind the scenes to let them know i'm in the air. you cannot cancel this meeting. >> yeah. i feel the same passion as you do about it, brian. it was just sort of unbelievable. like i can't think of an instance where something like that happened, as he is, you know, boarding the plane, canceling a meeting. first of all, i believe it's about $3 billion in aid that we give to jordan. it's probably at least that much for egypt as well. and so they had no problem taking billions of dollars in military aid, economic aid,
3:17 am
humanitarian aid. >> brian: take it back. >> from the united states. i think we should be considering that this morning. we also have to look, i think, brian and say to ourselves why too these leaders feel empowered to disrespect the president of the united states. and i'm truly not trying to be political about this point. but i think while the words that blinken and biden the secretary of state had for israel in the first few days of this war were strong and commendable, john kirby said on the plane last night that they were going over to ask israel some serious questions, tough questions how he paraphrased it. i don't know what that means. we are already in my mind starting to see a slow erosion away from the support that i think that we need for israel. listen, we were told time and time again under pompeo and in the trump administration that our policies were going to cause the chaos that you're seeing on your screens this morning. we were told our policies would cause that. it never did because people knew exactly where we stood. people would have never canceled on mike pompeo or president
3:18 am
trump in the air. and the fact that they can do so shows that they don't respect us. and, more importantly that, they don't fear us. but they should at least respect and fear the american taxpayer there should be ramifications. and if you don't start having ramifications if you don't set up deterrence this will escalate. the policy the biden administration, brian, has this policy of no escalation around the world of appeasement around the world. how is that working out in ukraine with russia? how is that working out in the middle east? stand up, be strong, be tough, use the power of american might because, if you don't, things will escalate. a policy of no escalation only ensures escalation. >> steve: morgan, one of the things the president said when he sat down about b. netanyahu in that limited press ability americans are worried, not worried what comes next. but he is absolutely right.
3:19 am
because americans are worried. everywhere i go people say hey, what is going to happen next? the worry is we are somehow going to get dragged into this. the news a couple days ago that a couple thousand of our service personnel are on standby for stuff like that. what happens next? probably god forbid going to be more depending on what happens to these hostages. take israel and the whole situation out of it. 30 dead americans. at least 15 hostages. we'll see where the numbers go from here. that requires a response from the united states we don't need anybody else to do our work for us. we need to respond when our friends are attacked. what does that response mean? that could entail a number of things. first thing i would do not have the treasury department today for example, issue more sanctions against hamas, fine. sanctions against hamas does nothing. stop playing foreign policy.
3:20 am
you know who to go after to stop. this. >> brian: it's iran. >> you know you have to play tough. the islamic republic of iran. just last night steve. guess what expired at the u.n. last night russian missiles. all of those things are not sanctioned anymore. it's fair game. the united states, the u.n. ambassador to the u.n. did not lift a single finger to stop that arms embargo from expiring because it will require them to be realistic that their iran policy has failed. i can't figure it out for the life of me. >> morgan, you mentioned sanctions and things like that. yesterday in washington 100 members of congress urged the administration to clamp down on hamas and islamic jihad's access to crypto-currency. because apparently they have raised over 100 -- this is according to the "wall street journal." they have raised over
3:21 am
$130 million in donations because crypto is hard to track. sanctions do not apply. hundreds of members of congress are making a good point. cut the cord on crypto for hamas and islamic jihad. >> that's great point. the treasury department where i used to work as financial intelligence analyst is actually pretty good at following the money and chasing these things when they want to be. they are rolling out new hamas sanctions today. i agree with you, how they are going to track that crypto-currency could definitely be in that new sanctions package. >> ainsley: lawrence? >> lawrence: you know, morgan, the bottom line is that the white house is still trying to figure out what their strategy is. you have been in the room before when briefings are happening. part of the job is to brief congress with what ilhan omar is saying. what rashida tlaib is saying, i have to ask the question. should they even be receiving briefings on this type of stuff?
3:22 am
i think they are entitled to unclassified briefings at least. i'm not sure either one of them have the security clearance i know omar was kicked off the foreign affairs committee. thank god kevin mccarthy did that sure would be nice to have the speaker of the house at this moment to determine these things, wouldn't it? >> brian: lastly, real quick, guess who is meeting president xi and vladimir putin today. >> that's right. >> brian: they are talking about their great relationship and growing the belt and road program. do you think we are able to keep our eye on the middle east and china we were shifting once again and once again they brought us back to the middle east. bush wanted to do it. obama wanted to do it and biden wanted to do it and now, guess what? we are back in the middle east. can we do both? >> no. because this administration hasn't even been able to do anything else but focus on russia and ukraine. and, again, as i spoke about earlier, their policy of trying
3:23 am
to get putin not to escalate ukraine, which hasn't really worked. they basically -- i mean, listen, i have been hearing from middle east diplomats for several years now how frustrated they were that they feel like the biden administration was basically completely ignoring the region. in order to focus on russia and ukraine. you are seeing putin and xi jinping to meet today. for the last decade the two of them have met with each other more than they have met with any other world leader. it's a dangerous day, brian. >> brian: those translators have been busy. thank you so much, morgan. happening now, president biden is meeting with president netanyahu behind closed doors. they went in front of cameras earlier. >> ainsley: this as americans are feared to be among the near 200 hostages held by hamas. up next, we talk with a mediator who negotiated a prisoner exchange with the terror group in 2011. and is working to release the current captives as well. stay with us. ♪ ♪
