washington, d.c. he is not speaker, jim jordan is a congressman, the chairman of the judiciary committee trying to become a speaker. he did not win the necessary votes last night. he is trying to whip votes again today. likely to be a vote here i think soon. around 11:00. they sometimes fudge that a little bit. we'll see if he is able to do that. the house will gavel in at any moment and gets underway and possible speaker pro tem mchenry will continue in the role given what we've heard today. a lot half evening in washington, d.c. jack lu is being questioned now on the senate foreign relations committee. i don't know if that will go, either. gillian. tense times here. >> gillian: nothing is going according to plan now and nothing smoothly. >> dana: president biden is wrapping up his trip in tel aviv. border. another busy day for you, trey. >> absolutely. just to give you the juxtaposition of president biden meeting with top israeli officials including benjamin netanyahu. as these conversations are taking place, the israelis are targeting the gaza strip with air strikes. you can see some of the black smoke rising from gaza. they have been pummeling the strip all day and night trying to hit different hamas positions ahead of an expected ground operation into gaza. we've been talking with soldiers near to the border saying they are prepared. they've been training. even the reserve units getting new instruction what exactly the ground operation will look like when it is ordered. all of this coming as the after math of that hospital explosion that took place last night. it's coming to the surface across the middle east. we saw overnight riots and demonstration else outside of the u.s. embassy in beirut

outside the embassy in jordan and turkey. right now as we speak, john, we get new images from the west bank city of ramallah of protests happening there. there is a real concern the tension here in the south and the fighting that erupted following that massacre 12 days ago is starting to spill over to the entire region. i want to show you the town that sits on the gaza border. we were there this morning with the israeli military getting a closer look at the gaza strip and the destruction left behind by the militants. >> this is a ghost town. pieces of life are scattered amid the charred remains of death. the few civilians still here only returned to gather belongings and look for their pets. >> i can do whatever i can to help and keep me sane. >> what should the world know about what happened here? >> i can't speak about it. i haven't -- i haven't realized

down the homes. as we discover more atrocities in the south i want to bring your attention to the northern border with lebanon. from southern lesbian ontoday there have been a variety of attacks on israeli positions. the real concern is that when israel does enter the gaza strip, there will be an immediate response by the iranian proxy hezbollah, the militant group with precision guided missiles. they already fired tank missiles into israel today. we expect those types of attacks to continue. >> john: looking at the pictures from the town brings home something we ran into yesterday. we talked with a person whose wife and three children were there at the kibbutz and they are now hostages under the control of hamas. he is now holding a protest/vigil to re mind the government they all need to get home. trey, how are you struck by the
8:08 am
scenes you saw there? >> i think it was a reminder how close these communities were to the gaza border. people living there when these militants crossed over on the backs of pickup trucks and motorcycles coming into these small, quiet towns. massacring who they could and pulling back hostages into the gaza strip. just to give you a sense of how close it is, the israelis were concerned as we were there and stand at the fence for a few moments to gather the shots we needed for our story because they were worried about sniper fire coming from gaza. israeli soldiers understand how close the enemy is not just here in the south. the posture at the highest level across this country and part of the reason you see the military movement of the americans headed toward israel. the arrival of marines, the preparations for u.s. citizens in lebanon and the level four evacuation from beirut. they understand this is likely

honor annually. president reagan had a plan to bomb training camps where iran was training hezbollah. his secretary at the defense at the time talked hit out of it. 40 years later in the exact same people backed by the same people are potentially getting ready to kill americans again. it is important we point that out because with everything president biden has said, his next actions justify any direction may determine what we deal with 40 years from now. it is important that the american people understand even president trump didn't get us into a new war but certainly killed a lot of terrorists with actions to include high-value targets. president biden taking affirmative steps to send u.s. jets to bomb areas. it may be the only way to prevent us from getting into a war. i want to give the president all the latitude in the world to take action to keep americans safe. we have lost two dozen americans
8:14 am
and don't know how many more hostages. this is an american fight. >> john: just because it was 40 years i want to remind everyone watching the death toll of that heinous attack carried out by hezbollah in 1983. just as it was getting going, 220 american marines killed, 18 sailors and three soldiers. you mentioned the attack on the french after that. that killed another 58 and in april another hezbollah attack causing massive damage at the u.s. embassy in beirut and the death of 17 more americans. the 26th marine expedition unit was called off early from exercises off the coast of kuwait. our understanding is it will join up by the gerald ford strike force group in the mediterranean not far from the coast of israel. special operations capable. what would it bring to the fight if it comes to that? >> this is an interesting thing that we've done over the years.
8:15 am
this specific unit is really capable. he said we can help you or we can hurt you and we can do both really well. the point of this is more of a crisis response. going in and retrieving a pilot if a plane is shot down. by making special operations capable it is more they can board a boat and save captives from somali pirates. there is an acronym for that. it is visit, board or secure a vessel. mainly what it does they have all the capabilities in that one small group of ships to do an amphibious landing an air landing and on ground to move forward, take ground and potentially rescue hostages. probably more importantly, if we have americans that are in israel, they get caught in a war torn battleground they would have the ability to go rescue those americans especially dignitaries and people of that nature or if some of our airplanes that are flying over
8:16 am
conducting operations from the battle ship group if something went wrong there they would have the capability to go rescue our pilots. more where they are oriented but integrate with navy sales and conduct larger missions. an amazing thing on the few ships. they can do more capabilities than any other military capability we have around the world. >> john: you put the 26 together with the ice en -- 2,000 u.s. troops are ready to deploy to the region. the troops aren't being sent anywhere specific just yet. if they were deployed they would go to a nearby country to be prepared to support israel in the war against hamas and possibly hezbollah if that group does get involved. those who received the orders were already on a 96-hour
8:17 am
prepare to deploy status. it has shortened to 24 hours. the u.s. this week deployed the eisenhower. joey, the other 2,000 that have been put on ready to deploy orders, they would be an advisory capacity and medical capacity suggesting at least with the medical capacity that they may go into israel if casualties begin to mount. what do you think? >> that's what it sounds like. it might be most necessary. look at the fact we have americans all over israel and we have americans held captive. we have a responsibility to take care of those americans. i don't see anything in the mule or strike group or the 2,000 military members that we are looking at a 24 hour nothing suggests a battalion of infantry going into gaza. it all suggests to me that our military believes there is a possibility if not likelihood
8:18 am
this conflict grows and we need to take care of americans either american pilots in aircraft conducted air raids or americans on the ground or civilians or hostages. also we have a tight relationship with israel. if we can help them without boots on the ground in gaza we probably should. >> john: joey jones joining us. thank you, appreciate your expertise. the house is just expected to start another round of voting for speaker at this hour. yesterday republican congressman jim jordan failed to secure enough votes for the gavel after 20 republicans voted against him. today jordan hopes to win over enough gop hold-outs to get the gavel. chad pergram joins us from capitol hill. give us a bit of a break from the war zone and take us into that war zone. >> this is a different type of battle on capitol hill for the speakership. jim jordan came in short yesterday. we're told that there are probably a few more republicans who will vote for him today on
8:19 am
the second ballot. we also wonder and told might be more attrition. this could be a wash. he can only lose four votes. there are at least four locked in opposing him, jimenez of florida voted for kevin mccarthy and another republican from florida and ken buck from colorado. if he loses more than that we're onto a third ballot. the question on capitol hill is whether or not they would do that. jim jordan has indicated today that he wants to continue to forge ahead and try to get the votes. some of those tactics have backfired to some degree with some of these members believing that some of jordan's allies have been a little too strong arm sending messages to the wives of members and so on. very upset about that and getting some of those members to vote for him for speaker is probably unlikely at this staved what happens? what we're starting to hear now is this conversation about
8:20 am
empowering adopting a resolution to empower patrick mchenry from north carolina, who has been acting as the speaker pro tem. all he can do is gavel the house is and out and preside over a speaker vote that will start here in 45 minutes, an hour. the premise here is what they want to do is elect him as the speaker pro tem. david joyce has said it's time to move on to a viable option. something that some members are starting to say unless jim jordan shows significant progress in this roll call vote today or unless he is elected or if it's obvious he will never be table cross the delta, maybe we need to try something else. jim jordan will have had two shots at the speakership. some of the allies of steve scalise said our guy never got an opportunity and why should we
8:21 am
continue to give jordan opportunities on the floor. 20 members voted against him yesterday. this is a game of attrition. jim jordan can only lose four votes and be elected speaker of the house with the other side saying maybe we need to graduate to somebody else completely try something different. the house is paralyzed. they cannot do anything. they cannot legislate or pass a resolution to condemn hamas or appropriate money to help with foreign aid package for israel. they can't even vote to keep the government open in a month's time. that's why members are saying we need to act. today is pivotal for jim jordan whether or not he is able to get the votes or show progress. if he doesn't show progress some might say the gig is up for you, john. >> john: we'll watch along with you. you are responsible for bringing the popcorn. chad pergram for us, thank you. a wide review of the israel/hamas war now. chinese leader xi and russian

president putin meeting yesterday as that war rages on. the two leaders have been critical of israel's handling of the crisis and called for a cease-fire. putin put a cease-fire toward the u.n. security council. it was rejected. it comes as president biden is in israel to pledge u.s. support. critics putin and xi to moving to undercut the united states and allies as a whole world watches. nikki haley out with a new op-ed. the headline, wake up, america. our enemies are an evil alliance taking advantage of our weaknesses around the world. the heritage foundation vp of national security and foreign policy and retired army lieutenant colonel joins us now. james, with enemies all around and new alliances forming. this would be the time to show american strength. >> you are really right to focus on the bigger picture here. we talk about hamas but hamas is
8:23 am
a tool of iran and iran and russia and china all have one thing in common, they all want to diminish america and absolutely want a degraded and removed american presence in the middle east. so these guys are the real enemy. we will never solve the problem of hamas unless we deal with its master iran. we have an administration what thebe engaging with iran. they want them to be quiet until after the election. that is more than enough to set up this kind of back slap from iranians against the united states. then we have the russians who want the middle east inflamed as they want africa inflamed. seven coupes in the last two years in africa. they want that to diminish u.s. and nato focus and attention on ukraine. china really let's be honest. china is sitting back and they just want to pick up the pieces. the chinese actually engage a lot with the israelis and want
8:24 am
edmonton to pull them away from the ands. they engaged everybody. but their client state in the region is iran. they want iran to come in on top. the chinese are happy to sit back and pick up the pieces. today if you are in tehran or moscow or in beijing, you only want one thing. you want israel to be as weakened as possible in the war. and you want the united states to be humiliated. then you can walk in and pick up the pieces. >> john: it was rich for russia to be calling for a cease-fire given to what it's doing in ukraine. this president said in the 60 minutes interview sunday night there is no direct evidence linking iran to this horrible terrorist attack carried out october 7th. there may not be direct evidence at this point, james, but we do have a law in the united states that if you give material
8:25 am
support to a terrorist group, you are as guilty as they are. why isn't the president pulling the trigger on that? >> well so we have two issues going on here. not only do we have iran's direct support to hamas. actually plenty of evidence to show not only collusion but planning. but we also have the iranians pushing hezbollah very hard to open a second front. this creates the most dangerous nightmare scenario here is that iran wants a two-front war. they want israel to be taken down a peg or two. the united states to be humiliated and that's the perfect time for iran to declare a nuclear break-out as biden goes into the election cycle and president the here is iran as a nuclear state. here you have the biden administration trapped with a one-track policy which will be we'll keep iran quiet by
8:26 am
engaging with them. not only has that policy failed and led to the war. you have a president who finds himself absolutely totally committed to having to support the israelis but to admit that he fundamentally helped cause this and that by now going after iran he is not dealing with the problem. that's a bridge too far for this administration. they are caught in the middle here. >> john: and i imagine that they will continue to stand by the status quo because they want to get back into the nuclear deal. thanks for your insight. 300,000 israeli troops are still standing by at the gaza border. many thought israel would give the go around with a ground invasion within a few days of the october 7th attack. on day 12 of the war it is unclear what the next phase will look like. sources say one of several reasons for the delay is concern that hezbollah is waiting for an idf invasion of gaza getting tied up there before opening a
8:27 am
full front in northern israel. there are also political concerns over a ground offensive and worries for the lives of hostages who are currently held in gaza. james, let me ask you a question about that if i could. so iran has not yet given hezbollah the go ahead to mount a large-scale operation across the northern border. if israel does go into gaza and gets the bulk of its force tied up there, would that be an opportunity for iran to say go? >> it certainly seems the irans -- the iran, saudi ambassador met with the iranians yesterday and today and ordered all saudi citizens to leave lebanon. everybody is prepping for a second front. from a military perspective the perfect time to start a second front is when somebody is
8:28 am
committed on the other front. yeah, it would make sense that when the israelis go in in force on the ground it would be the time to open up the second front. the israelis aren't stupid, as is the united states not stupid in this. what the israelis would like to do is diminish as much capacity in the north as they can before they go into the south. but be really ready to do the operation in the south and also be ready in the north before they trigger something. the united states is interesting. u.s. has really no leverage here. biden has to be all in for supporting israel. he already committed the logistics to support the israelis. we've moved two carriers sku into the gulf that demonstrated we're ready to strike those logistics lines in syria if they try this. we just moved a marine expedition unit. if somebody goes after an embassy, the u.s. is going to
8:29 am
send those guys in no matter where it is. we prep everything for a military conflict but want the whole thing to die down. biden wants to get reelected and wants everybody to be calm and doesn't want to make the hard decisions on hamas and iran. the u.s. is pressing the israelis not to open a broad front in gaza. but on the other hand he has given them all the tools to do that. so the decision maker here really is netanyahu. he is the guy that's really calling the shots. >> john: let me ask you this question. joey jones was mentioning a few minutes ago that after the 1983 embassy bombing that killed so many american service members, the u.s. did go in and carry out air strikes against hezbollah positions. because americans have died in this conflict already, if hezbollah were to open up a second front, can you see any scenario under which some of those f-35s and f-18s flying off
8:30 am
the ford and eisenhower might have strikes against hezbollah in lebanon? >> the least controversial and most consensus building in the u.s. striking targets in syria. as you know, one of the things that the iranians try to do when the syrian civil war broke out, they were very adamant about building up their influence in syria for one reason, so they could build that logistics bridge into lebanon so they could really support a second front in hezbollah against iran. so that stuff i think is pretty much open target. you could see the u.s. absolutely pummeling that. i think whether the u.s. would directly get involved in striking targets in lebanon, i don't know. that seems to be a bit riskier. syria, nobody could argue against the u.s. doing that. >> john: james for a second time, thank you for joining us, appreciate it.
8:31 am
all right. the deadly gaza hospital blast is reverberating throughout the myself east region even though israel has video evidence showing a rocket misfire inside gaza caused the explosion as israel's first responders reveal the horrifying scenes they saw after the hamas terror attacks 12 days ago. civilians burned alive. dead children with hands tied behind their backs and bodies showing signs of unspeakable torture. i spoke with one of those first responders on america reports. >> i can't say i am used to disasters because no one is used to disasters. i went through a lot. if it's a natural disasters or attacks, it is 9/11 attack, or it was in surfside in miami, i was there. something like this, this is -- i can't call them animals.
8:32 am
it is a shame for the animals. they came in and killing just for killing. >> john: mike tobin is live in southern israel with the latest from there. mike. >> john, i can tell you the sun is going down and seeing an uptick fire coming out of the gaza strip and air strikes. the most prominent job being done by the israeli defense force was trying to counter this narrative that has gone out that it was israel's fault for the explosion at the hospital. a number of videos show a rocket barrage coming out of the gaza strip and see an explosion in the foreground. that's the hospital, the rockets clearly intended to reach into israel. the explosion inside of the gaza strip. a number of those are circulating on the internet. one of the things the idf released is an intercepted phone call between a couple of hamas

operatives acknowledging that it was an islamic jihad rocket that caused the explosion. [speaking native language] >> hamas checked the reports and understood it was an islamic jihad rocket that had misfired and decided to launch a global media campaign to hide what really happened. they went as far as inflating the numbers of casualties. >> never did get a hard, fast number out of the palestinian health ministries. only that civilian casualties were in the hundreds and say the casualties on the palestinian side are greater than 3400.
8:34 am
the narrative and anger ran through the arab world resulting in demonstrations from iran to beirut and statements from the iranian foreign ministry saying time is running out for israel. >> john: it was quite stunning last night because we were here at that time how quickly the international media and community picked up on the pronouncement from hamas. nobody had proof as to what happened. >> that happens time and again. the immediate conclusion was reached and raced around the world. it doesn't get removed. there is evidence that has been offered up by israel. you have the u.s. national security council saying now that they believe with the preliminary evidence it was an islamic jihad rocket that caused
8:35 am
the explosion. too late. the demonstrations are taking place. the anger is out there. once it is out there it doesn't seem to go away, john. >> john: we were in the old city talking to a number of palestinians and to a person they said israel killed all those people in the hospital. mike, we'll see if that narrative continues to hold or if israel makes some way into turning it back a little bit. time will tell. thank you. the gaza hospital blast sparking new warnings from iran. its foreign ministry posting on social media the time is over for israel. hours earlier top iranian commander threatened israel will face another shock wave of attacks. all of this as there were multiple reports tying iran to the initial hamas terrorist raid. one wrote in an op-ed they have their own political objectives but iran the largest beneficiary. the regime expects the national security policy to reorient

toward the palestinians relieving tehran of military pressure in syria and iraq. iran thinks it will be free to advance its nuclear program while israel tries to deal with hamas. senate republicans yesterday called for the united states to immediately end aid to the palestinians in gaza. they also urged president biden to formally freeze the $6 billion that we released to iran in a prisoner swap last month. >> we know iran bankrolls hamas, we need to insure that not another dollar goes to iran. >> unfortunately the message of the biden administration has been one of appeasement of iran. >> biden's ransom payment made the iranians shows you where his true colors are. >> we need our leaders to stand firm and calling them accountability. >> we as a nation will stand up to the world's largest state sponsor of terror and this is
8:37 am
iran. >> john: senator marsha blackburn joins us now. the treasury department says it will block iranian access to the $6 billion. you and your senate colleagues believe that the government needs to go further than that and completely refreeze that money. why? >> absolutely. the money should be refrozen and the waivers that allowed the transfer to take place from. we don't want iran to ever have their hands on that money. what we do know is when you give iran money, like happened with the 2015 iran nuclear deal and again with this $6 billion in ransom payments, what does iran do with this money? a couple of things. they will enrich uranium so they
8:38 am
can build nuclear war heads. we don't want them to have nuclear war heads. secondly, iran is the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism. if you give them a dollar they'll put most of that dollar to trims. they fund hamas to the tune of $1 hundred million a year plus supplies and training and weapons and ammo. and hezbollah this exact same program. you see, iran uses these proxies to do their dirty work. and to carry out these terrorist attacks like hamas has carried out on israel. >> john: we saw what an -- what could iran do to israel if it got its hands on a nuclear weapons. >> it is of concern.
8:39 am
what has iran and ayatollah said is their goal? eliminate israel. they have even called this attack on israel by hamas as a necessary step in eliminating israel. you have these radicals, these terrorists that run around shouting death to israel, death to america. they go through israel saying from the river to the sea, which means eliminating israel. so we know what they are going to do. they have told us what they are going to do. if they are going to tell you what they are going to do, for goodness sakes believe them and lets agree to stop them and eliminate these terrorists organizations from the face of the earth. >> john: senator, iran has said in recent hours that if israel continues its military campaign in gaza, it will face another

shock wave. that threat coming directly from iran. yet we heard the president again today in tel aviv when he was saying to other actors in the region to stay out of this, he just used the words don't, don't, don't. one fewer don'ts than he said sunday night. does he need to be sending a stronger signal to iran? if iran is threatening israel directly does the united states president not need to step it up a bit in terms of the rhetoric? >> yes, he does. why formally freezing the $6 billion, reimplementing the sanctions which iran, during the trump administration, was producing a few hundred barrels of oil a day. they are back to 3 million barrels a day and making a billion dollars a week on selling oil. put those sanctions in place. another thing the u.n. releasing work agency for palestinian refugees which trump had

>> john: new video for you. just moments ago president biden departed israel. just before his departure the president announced the united states will provide $1 hundred million in humanitarian assistance to the palestinian people in gaza and the west bank. part of the statement reading civilians are not to blame and should not suffer for hamas's horrific terrorism.

civilian lives must be protected and assistance must urgently reach those in need. 1400 israelis killed by hamas so far students at college campuses across america are gathering for pro-palestinian and anti-israel rallies including a protest at nyu yesterday where students called for university leadership to acknowledge palestinian loss of life. dozens of student groups have hosted demonstrations or released statements about the war including more than 30 at harvard. that is where we find molly line with more on those student rallies. molly. >> john, pro-israel counter protestors are also showing up at the rallies creating sense moments. a rally yesterday remained peaceful. nypd officers stood between protestors waving flags and standing in solidarity with israel and the hundreds of people who attended a rally for students for justice for

palestinian in washington square park yesterday. >> israel, you can't hide. you are committing genocide. >> the palestinian student group is slamming nyu's response accusing the president of failing palestinian students posting this week we're being forced to plead for university administration to address the most basic humanity and at cornell. showed cornell university professor saying he was exhilarated by the attack the president called the comment reprehensible. at harvard more than a half dozen gop lawmakers including stefanik and cruz sent a letter

to the college president. they wrote: >> nine of the student organizations that signed the statement have walked back their participation. john i've been watching that from here. molly, thank you. multiple headlines calling out colleges and universities saying they have a broken moral compass and a selective defense for the right to free speech and one for students to take their money

elsewhere. patrick, good to see you. one question four. what the heck is going on on college campuses across america? >> i hear you. hope you are safe over there. i'm proud that i taught at west point full-time 20 years ago and then i left to combat deployment and why i left. i teach now at the war and business school. to see that cornell professor say he was happy, exhilarated that there has been over 1400 people killed, raped, kidnapped is despicable. he has absolutely -- again, i believe in american freedom of speech and academic freedom but enough is enough. that is wrong. we do not need him in front of young american students trying to pollute their mind with the garbage he is putting out. >> john: it is not just him that is making statements that you look at and say how do you ever

justify that? let's look at what the squad members have said about that. omar and tlaib point a finger of blame at israel for the gaza hospital blast despite evidence to the contrary the israeli defense forces put out including a recording which purports to show two hamas operatives talking about the fact it was an islamic jihad missile that went astray. both squad members are calling for president biden to a cease-fire tlaib called it biden's war and will remember where you stood. say what you will about president biden. i don't remember him cutting holes through the fences between gaza and the kibbutzs and giving hamas the go ahead to attack israeli civilians. >> killing people like a 70-year-old jewish grandmother from bucks county, pennsylvania. they killed her when she tried flee to an escape room. they got her, though. her son, johnny, his wife and

her three young kids did get into the safe room. hamas couldn't get to them so they burned down their house and killed them. they killed 1400 other folks in israel. so let's be clear. this is the fog of war. i served in baghdad. i understand what terrorists do. they hide behind mosques, hospitals, they hide behind schools and they conduct attacks. we don't know exactly what happened yet. it is the fog of war. we do know this. that israel shares our values that we do in america. we follow the laws of war. follow the law of armed conflict. our hearts, all of our hearts go out to the 500 humans collateral damage of the terrorist organization. it hurts and we'll see what happens and see what caused it. but we do know this. there are too many colleges and universities putting their head in the sand when it comes to anti-jewish, anti-semitic rallies, rhetoric. it has been going on not just in the last 12 days. it has been going on for year
8:54 am
after year and we can no longer tolerate that in our great country. >> john: what you were saying a moment ago hamas putting palestinians in harm's way was articulated by the "wall street journal" that said palestinian lives matter except to hamas. responsibility for civilian casualties in gaza lies with the jihadists. israel has an obligation to do what it can to protect civilians and it is doing so. it has warned gazans to move to the south. contrast that with hamas. it has ordered them not to flee and its leaders hide weapons in hospitals, schools, and mosques. i wonder, patrick, if it is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was an islamic jihad missile that went wrong as it flew through the air and landed on the hospital if there will be universal con teamdation from all the people condemning israel against islamic jihad for that. >> we need to be open and transparent. we hope so.
8:55 am
hamas won't change. they are a terrorist organization. they are a spin-off of the muslim brotherhood. if you look at the palestinians people. people are losing. this is israel against hamas. 62% of palestinian people want a cease-fire. all people especially those of us who served in combat we want peace. and that's what president biden is doing by going over there. but let's be clear, we go by the saying in america speak softly and carry a big stick. that's why you see the u.s.s. eisenhower and u.s.s. ford to send a message to hezbollah, stand back. >> john: good to get your thoughts. thank you, my friend. thank you for watching "the faulkner focus." i'm john roberts in jerusalem. see you back here at 1:00 p.m. eastern with sandra smith for america reports. thanks for watching. ai-powered y
