7:10 am
i think what as i look at this just from a problem solving perspective, it certainly is getting american hostages back is the highest u.s. concern. you look at israel's position on this. their stated objective is to destroy hamas in the wake of this horrific attack. their 9/11 and they have to balance that with these hostages not only their own, but a range of other hostages including u.s. hostages. so how they manage this incursion, how they manages this rescue is going to be probably one of the most complex things the israeli military has ever undertaken. >> gillian: does hamas leadership look at the american hostages they are holding right now as becoming more valuable to them over time the longer they hold them, or less valuable? >> that all depends on the response. and the calculus.
7:11 am
how painful does it become, risk versus reward? frankly we're in new territory here in the way this has been conducted. if you think about it, on one hand you have this emerging campaign that could potentially be a massive regional conventional campaign with tanks and ships and that kind of thing. at the same time you have this asymmetric with non-state actors taking hostages and it is all rolled into together into this nasty hybrid. i think it remains to be seen. it remains to be seen what the response is, israel's response and how they actually deal with recovering those hostages and how much pain it causes to the hostage takers. >> gillian: because you have been involved in rescuing hostages it is a good opportunity to ask you if you have any advice for counsel for americans being held in captivity right now? >> most of the work that i did
