prime minister benjamin netanyahu's spokesperson with us this afternoon. we appreciate it. i want to ask you to comment on the latest numbers that we have been given coming out of your side in this conflict. we're looking at 1400 plus israelis killed so far, 5,000 plus israelis wounded and 210 israeli hostages remain in hamas custody as of this hour. are those the numbers, the latest numbers that you can confirm, and what can you tell us about these people? >> indeed. those are the numbers. i can add to that that between 100 and 200 israelis are still unaccounted for. we are 14 -- rather, 15 days now after that terrible october 7th massacre that's forced us into a war against hamas because we have decided at a nation that we can no longer live with this existential, genocidal threat next to us.
10:11 am
and still so many people are unaccounted for. that means they are either dead and their bodies are inside the gaza strip, maybe these people were abducted by hamas alongside with other 210 israelis, or there is a chance that they are dead is and their bodies are here in israel but are beyond recognition. we are still trying to identify some of the victims because as your reporter just reported in very detailed description, they committed such terrible atrocities that it just -- very, very difficult to identify the victims. they turned people into ashes, children and baby, elderly included. that's what they did. gillian: tal, if you look at the big picture in the region, we've seen anti-israeli protests turn very violent at capitols across the middle east, hezbollah stepping up launches across the border on behalf of iran.
10:12 am
do you think there is a chance that we may yet see american boots on the ground inside israel or gaza? is that something that the israeli military would like to see? >> well, first, we are grateful for any kind of support and all the support that we have been receiving from the united states, from president biden and the american people. we're seeing sweeping bipartisan support in the u.s. congress, and it's moral support and material support. president biden said and we are very thankful to that that israel will get the tools to do what has to be done with hamas because we said that declared goal of the operation right now in gaza gaza is to dismantle hamas. obviously, we hope that doesn't develop into an all-out war including with hezbollah backed by iran on the northern front. and is we have warned and president biden as well warned our enemies, our adversaries across the region not to test us. he said it in one word, he said don't.

but if israel is needed to act on more than one front, we will, of course, do it because, you know what? we have done this before in two other wars, in 1967 and 1973, and we won. because we know what it takes to survive in this neighborhood. the jewish people, we've been around in our ancestral homeland for over 3,000 years, and we have developed very good instincts right now. and right now we're saying that in order to survive, hamas can be no longer. gillian: earlier this morning u.s. eastern time, tal, 20 international trucks of humanitarian aid were allowed to somewhere the the gaza strip. is this a move the prime minister's office is supportive of? >> well, first, let me say that the most urgent humanitarian issue inside the gaza strip right now is the condition of 210 israelis being held in captivity there. but what person towns to humanitarian -- pertains to the humanitarian aid addressed to
10:14 am
the palestinians, yes, 20 trucks went in from egypt into the gaza strip. we said we reached certain agreements with our american counterparts that we will not prevent the transfer of essential aid including food, water and medical supplies to these areas in the southern gaza strip where we called on the population to evacuate to because the heavy fighting is taking place in the north of the strip. and we said that as long as this aid will reach the palestinian people, that we don't want them to get caught in the crossfire, we don't want them to suffer as hamas does, by the way, we will make sure that they will get this humanitarian aid. but this aid can cannot end up in the hands of hamas. has our condition. that is our condition. gillian: tal heinrich, thank you for taking time with us today, we really appreciate it. >> thank you. gillian: well, a 28-year-old new york woman is now safely back in the u.s. after surviving the

10:45 am
three separate drone attacks in syria and iraq, two the targeting garrisons in syria. one resulted in minor secure ises to u.s. forces. in western iraq u.s. forces shot 2 drones, destroying one and damaging the other. that resulted in minor injuries. tragically, though, one american contractor died of a cardiac episode while seeking shelter from the attacks. now, important to remember for everyone watching the u.s. still has 2500 troops in iraq, about 900 in syria, reminding us that the u.s. is still active in those regions, though the focus now is on israel and gaza. speaking about these attacks in iraq and syria, the u.s. department of defense meaning pentagon officials don't necessarily believe this has anything to do directly with what we're seeing in israel and hamas. these are separate issues a although notable, and the pentagon remains ready to take a different posture if need be. gillian?

gillian: dade spunt at the pentagon, thanks. griff: jill yarning thanks. the u.s. and allies urging -- the u.s. to set up objective -- israel to set up objectives. joining us now, retired army general vincent sent bowles. we first met 20 years ago on an air base in iraq. now as the veteran that you are having served in desert storm, operation iraqi freedom, you look at the fight that the idf is going to take into gaza, what are your observations? >> it's going to be a different fight for them. it's going to a be a 360-degree fight, drones and aircraft above them, on the ground engaging in fighting hamas that's engaged in front of them. it'll be a 25-50 # meter fight, you're fighting the guy right in front of you, and then it'll be the subterranean underground

fight. so they will be fighting in a 360 degrees area. the other thing that really changes is previous israeli operations in gaza were classified as they were mowing the lawn, going in, trying to police things, get things in the right area. this is the decapitation of hamas. this will be much more intense and severe. griff: and, general, when we obviously learn about the hostages, the 200 or so that are there, how much does that complicate the objectives of the idf going in? >> it depends on the intelligence the idf has. i'm sure that every intelligence platform the idf has now and some assets we have are targeted in there to identify and find the hostages. if they can. and if they know where the hostages are, they'll look at mitigating civilian casualties, but there will be instances where they don't know9 where the hostages are, they'll come upon them, come upon civilians, and hamas has used in the past civilians as human shields.

so that will be a tremendous difficulty. if they can find them, they'll avoid them and tray to regain them -- try to regain them, but if they didn't can't do that, it'll be a significant challenge. drink griff as we put those things together, that's such a great point, general, the complexity of hostages, the tunnels, i was with lieutenant colonel ollie north in 2016 in mosul when the iraqi special forces were trying to rid that city of isis. the u.s. military was advise and assist. if you compare those two and look at the challenge ahead before the idf, have we even seen any fighting like this before? >> mosul fight was a -- my folks it was a 9-month fight for the iraqi forces to take mosul back from isis. nine months. this is a much more contained fight. this is the most, one of the most densely populated areas in the world right now. 2 million people living in gaza

even though your previous reporter said some number of them migrated south, it's still one of the most densely populated areas in the world. this will be a long fight. it will be for the iraqi forces -- excuse me, the israeli forces, it will be psychologically draining. you will never, you will never be able to find an off switch and rest for a minute because the enemy is 360 degrees all around you. so it will be very intense. it will be a long fight. i think it's very important that israel having been bloodied and embarrassed on the 7th of october, two weeks ago, needs to have some early initial success and maintain the momentum of what they want to do. griff: and let me, lastly, ask you with, general, we're seeing signs up on the lebanon border, hezbollah looking that they are going to get more and more involved particularly once the idf goes into gaza. how much will that complicate things? >> well, fighting in two directions is a challenge. i think our naval vessels are there to provide some detenderness to hezbollah --
