4:05 pm
what he was going on aboard air force one yesterday one of the questions posed would you like to see the ground assault own gaza delayed in order to get more hostage released we saw the release of the two american hostages that a chicago area -- mother and daughter just yesterday. and then the president said yes and white house later walked that back, but pretty clear there's pressure from the white house and european governments, in fact, the french president macron due here in israel in a few days and pressure finish israel to delay that ground assault in order to attempt to free more hostages. of course, we've spoken a lot about two americans released, of course, over 200 israeli hostages tonight are in captivity in gaza, of course, you have ten missing americans, many thought to also be held captive in gaza julie. >> so lucas great to e sou you the rafa border opened to let aid into the gaza strip today. they're calling life saving aid to palestinians running short of food. medicine, and water --
4:06 pm
this also came under, you know, as a result of pressure from a number of governments on the israelis to do this. they were concerned about hamas stealing this aid and potentially -- smuggling in additional weapons and have you heard anything about whether these shipments were actually inspected? or were they just pushed right through? >> well this report out of egypt saying exactly what you said that they were not inspected and then officials also say there was no fuel in some of those convoy, of course, fuel used to help hamas but certainly that's one of the pledges that president biden made when he came here to tel-aviv he said he had put pressure on the israelis to open up this humanitarian corridor out of egypt prime minister benjamin netanyahu very clear, though, no aid will be going from israel directly into gaza. >> lucas it's griff and i want to talk to you a little bit about battle space you mentioned in your report this may be invasion of gaza similar to that

able to inflict pain on the israeli forces. it is just nothing easy about clearing that house no matter how much technology the israeli forces have. >> lucas i want to turn the focus a little bit your in tel-aviv one of not largest city in israel. what is life like for israelis are kids going back to school is there a contention of israelis back to normal life or the entire country in a feeling of hate we're in war right now. >> joey the streets are much qietser than you see normally on for most people when they visit here to israel caramel markets you don't see -- the visitors not just tourists but also people most people are staying indoors businesses are shuttered. this is a country at war. this is -- you know, little spart of no question and these are -- this is a country that for decades has been pighting not just hamas but hecks hezbollah
4:09 pm
as well and they can handle hamas and handle hezbollah but what they want to see with the u.s. and the presence overt ford strike group and ike they think those u.s. navy warships is going prevent world war iii. >> lucas tomlinson thank you so much for your excellent reporting as always stay safe. thank you. we're going head now switch gears to lebanon where a missile fired by hezbollah killed an israeli, american reservist. idf then carrying out a number of strikes targeting hezbollah sites let's go to steve harrigan live in beirut with the latest there. hey, steve. >> that was 22-year-old from maryland one of many people with dual citizenships. both u.s. and israel citizen she know he came back when his country needed him and yesterday he was killed by an antitank
4:10 pm
rocket fired from lebanon by hezbollah. what we're seeing now over the past two weeks is steady fighting between the two sides. but contain fighting, right now about 20 hezbollah fighters killed in the past two weeks. about 5 killed on the israeli side, but today that has been uptick six hezbollah fighters killed in one day so things really beginning to ratchet up so far. we've seen video released by the israeli military which shows what they call a fatal strike on a hezbollah terrorist cell in southern lebanon. the goal of hezbollah in this fighting so far is not clear. we heard from the number two in hezbollah today saying that they are already in the heart of the fight. and that if israel does launch a ground operation in gaza, they will join in. whether that's true or not, is not clear. another possible goal would be simply to occupy israeli forces
4:11 pm
in the north to prevent them from joining the any operation in gaza. so we're really watching and waiting right now as both sides struggle with an operation that could lead to a second front something which has been incredibly deadly and incredibly destructive in the past the last time hezbollah and israel fought was back in 2006 that was a 34-day war and it really left the country of lebanon reeling. billions of dollars in damage major portions of southern lebanon, simply rubbled by israeli air power. so there's a risk for israel. if hezbollah enters it is a powerful force, it's backed by iran. they have tens of thousands of rockets. they have fighters who have on the ground experience in syria. but it is also a risk for hezbollah. israel could potentially destroy the nation of lebanon by counterattacking any hezbollah strikes in israel.
4:12 pm
back to you julie. >> how much do you believe hezbollah's involvement in this and striking and -- firing missiles to the northern section of israel can have on the ground invasion because there was word of a ground invasion beginning over a week ago and now here we are with israel now striking from two different points in the state, it is very tricky now and they could be run very thin. if they have fight both these wars at the same time. >> you're right to say how tricky it is and it is an unusual balance when you see two sides firing rockets at each other and to say well it is contained well they're not really at war. and it could get much more complicated as the war increases and ramps up. if israel does launch a ground operation into gaza the pressure on hezbollah to join and take action will increase dramatically. so what we're seeing today could be very different from we're seeing few days from now julie.
4:13 pm
>> all right. >> steve, we look at lebanon and what hezbollah offers as a threat and we go back to the 80s, hezbollah has been around since early 80s and -- as we look at at the threat that hezbollah poses, do we find ourself in a place to where -- they may be the greater threats to american forces this is something that, i mean, remember the beirut bombings in 1983, and they say they're a heavier force well armed is this perhaps the part of a war here that gets america even more engaged or -- has a bigger threat to america? >> it certainly is a scary thought you're right to point out those bombings. the anniversary of which is coming up this monday. really the start of what many people think were global terrorists mass attacks that bombing here in lebanon. and you're right also to point out hezbollah increased strength. even on valli official pointed
4:14 pm
out that hezbollah has opponent as a foe is more than ten times greater than hamas so two very different things. this is an operation with battle hardened fighters this is an operation funded, supported trained by iran and this is an operation really with more than 150,000 missiles. these are long range missiles, these are long rage rockets, they're really can reach anywhere in to israel so et threat for them as a military force is a serious one. 34-day war back in 2006, it is hard to see an offramp at this point. how they can avoid joining the fight. >> hey steve it is griff quick question here about the threat to american citizens in lebanon do we know how many are there and has the emcee staff evacuated you're there, obviously, but presumably there are others there. >> yeah we've seen warnings from the u.s. and from multiple countries basically saying to leave now.
4:15 pm
and also concerns about the airport a lot of major international carriers have already shut down flights it is hard to get insurance for flights. so the only way out if you're a westerner really and get on a boat now is to fly out of this airport because of where you are geographically. you know, you can't go through syria and cross border through israel so you could really get stuck here and keep in mind that anti-american sentiments we saw real attacks on the u.s. embassy which was rocked it was molotov cocktails they set a building next to u.s. embassy so certainly an anti-american sentiments could ratchet it up you have to remember where you are, who is running this country, and who you are, the danger level is -- you don't feel it right now but that could certainly change. >> steve you mentioned who was running the country of lebanon and technically there is a government that is separate from hezbollah and the united states has spent billions of dollars over the decades trying to prop
4:16 pm
up that government to be a blunt towards hezbollah. are you hearing negative from the local government about their efforts to tamp down what is simmering now and preventing from becoming a widespread problem especially given that you mention israel has the ability to completely destroy the country? >> i think there's a real hesitation from both sides not only from the government which is weak right now this was a place where the currency is pretty much in free fall where 80% of the people are living below poverty line. but also from hezbollah as well. they have gained considerably in power in stature and in strength. since that war in 2006, a massive counterattack by israel would crush everything they've built here since then. so their risk really both for the civilians and for hezbollah in answering a possible major war with israel. s >> all right steve harrigan gt job thank you so much for
