canadian officials are on the look out for robert card to make sure he doesn't possibly cross the border and the elite border patrol bortac tactical unit arrived last night. this is the same unit that tracked down daniel cavalcante, escaped inmate from the prison in chester county not long ago. this is an elite group that has come in. this manhunt is in the second day. >> carley: the manhunt has gone international, as well. nate foy, thank you for the update. we'll check back in soon. >> todd: bring in former new york city police detective, dr. odom, glad to have you here. i want to jump off with you where nate left off. the bortac unit is a unique unit. it was used in the capture of

daniel cavalcante. what happens now? describe the coordination with bortac. >> what happens now, we have basically international task force that is taking place now and have federal, state and local officials involved with this, we have different intelligence units there, satellite, marking his last movement he make, doing tracking to find out how far can he travel from a certain point of the last point of the ping, or incident. everybody is involved and all technology involved from facial recognition and cameras and different locations to border to water and underwater stuff they have to make sure the person is tracked. they will find him. >> carley: yesterday police surrounded the last known address for this suspect and they used flash bangs and encouraged him to get out if he was in there. he was not in the home. it caused a huge scene and

people were wondering if this would be the end of the search. it ended up not being. police said this is standard protocol, is it? do you think that was appropriate step to take? >> oh, definitely, you have certain information, you act on because you want to leave no stone unturned. when you do an investigation, make sure you are thinking and looking outside of the box also and make sure every angle, could be one piece of information that could help you do this. evidence must be driven. you can't leave any stone unturned when active shooter and possibility of mental issue and prior ilmilitary experience, make sure all options to prevent further fatality. >> todd: there has been discussion the suspect may have escaped by way of water or river, what kind of training does a local police officer get

police can't find card now because he committed suicide? >> that is always a possibility, but we have to make sure we don't leave any stone unturned and take care of this and make sure everything is scared away while doing this. therefore, you can't leave any stone unturned with something like this. it is a big manhunt, multiple murder, active shooter, make sure we do it, even if it is a blanket sometimes, the point is we covered that area and help with investigation to check that one off. >> todd: dr. odom, good look at what is going on right now, as they try to bring this individual to justice. thank you. our other top story, united states striking two targets linked to iran revolutionary guard in syria. u.s. bases have come under fire 19 times in the past 10 days. >> carley: israel sent tanks to northern gaza for a second
1:10 am
straight night. mike tobin is in tel aviv, what can you tell us this morning? >> the big development, the u.s. engaged in combat in the region with strikes from us f-16. two bases in eastern syria near the iraqi border, bases run by the iranian revolutionary guard corps and response to menacing attack u.s. forces have been subject to over the past 10 days. 19 different attack from drones and cruise missiles that rukt r resulted in casualties. he died from a heart attack. and personnel subject to light injuries, a lot are traumatic brain injury from force of the blast. numbers could change, particularly with brain injuries, those injuries manifest over time. u.s. defense secretary lloyd austin was quick to note in his statement, in fact noted twice,
1:11 am
this does not change the u.s. posture in terms of support of israel in the war with hamas. nothing of that -- none of that has changed, this is direct response to attack on u.s. forces. the u.s. has supported israel and supports it in this case in the form of artillery, 105-millimeter shells and the interceptors with the iron dome. the iron dome in great use because of all the rocket fire coming out of the gaza strip. that is the situation as relates to the new u.s. airstrike, it was directed at iranian proxies and intended to send a message at iranian meddling in the region. the u.s. says they will not hesitate to use combat. another incursion in the gaza strip on northeast side, brief incursion.
1:12 am
what we get from the israelis, they are prepping the ground and attacking 18 anti-tank. we saw them with armored personnel and bulldozer, they were doing work on the ground. what i have seen palestinians do in the past inside gaza, built big sand burms. they can attack hamas infrastructure and try to dismantle or blowup the boobie traps. >> carley: idf updated number of hostages to 229, that number keeps ticking up and the goal is to get all those people home. mike tobin, live on the ground in tel aviv, thank you. jim hanson, former u.s. army special forces. jim, blinken says reaction to attack on u.s. service members
1:13 am
would be swift and decisive and we have airstrikes in syria. what do you think, it is the appropriate deterrent for iran to not escalate further? >> we will find out, carley. the problem is iran wants the u.s. to be involved to generate support for the cause of the palestinians and broader idea that they are a regional hegemon and power in the gulf and maybe the gulf arab states will block their play. i think it will backfire on them. i don't think any of the states, saudis and the rest will back attacks on the united states by shia militia that are proxies of iran. iran was the main sponsor of hamas, who started this whole mess. i think the u.s. response was appropriate and hope the iranians get the message. >> todd: pentagon under no
1:14 am
illusion the strikes will stop the attacks. you agree, although you disagree this is good move by iran. why last night? why not immediately in the moments following the attacks on u.s. bases? was that strategic or something else at play? >> there is a lot of diplomacy going on behind the scenes to decide who will back which play. i think right now we're trying to make sure folks who normally have sympathy for palestinians, gulf arab states, will not decide they are going to become a problem as we try to keep this limited to simply israel defeating hamas and removing them from power. that is the goal to keep this limited to that and not let iran turn this into regional conflict. >> carley: while iran is attacking u.s. forces in the middle east, iran foreign minister allowed on u.s. soil.
1:15 am
he made a speech yesterday at the un and threatened united states saying america will not be spared from the fire if the fighting in gaza is not stopped and john kirby has spoken out and says the u.s. has no control over who gets to go to the united nations' meetings, but there are visas involved here. >> yeah, i think some level, a lot of people are in the united states on visas, who are either threatening us, as iranian foreign minister did and a lot of people who are supporting the hamas terrorists, who are in the united states as our guests and i think it is time for the state department to look at all the groups that are front groups for hamas and pull visas on any of the people and send them home. no reason for us allow terrorists to talk smack on u.s. soil.
1:16 am
>> todd: start that search at any college or university these days, which is shocking. what do you make of the fact that we told israel after the fact, after we did this attack? >> i kind of doubt we told them after the attack. that may be the public statement, designed to smooth water with other people in the area, it is highly unlikely we made strikes without direct coordination with the israelis. they are our number one ally and we will coordinate everything with them. i hope the u.s. has given them the green light to finish hostage negotiations being done by qatar, who helped hamas do this. a twisted and sickening thing there. the qataris need to pay for that and we need to give green light to the israelis to roll through and take out hamas in gaza and make sure they never rule there again. >> carley: on the qatar front,
1:17 am
"washington post" says the u.s. and qatar have agreed to revisit qatar relationship with hamas once this crisis is over, unclear if that means the leaders would be kicked out of the country. what do you make of that reporting? >> i think that is the least that can happen. right now qataris were major supporter and sponsor and hosted leaders of hamas in their country. they need to give those people up, allow them to face justice and make sure all of their terror support, especially of hamas and the others in the gaza and other areas around israel is shut down. it's just ridiculous for us to pretend qatar is an ally when they do those kind of things. the only reason they are a good negotiator to get hostages back is because they are friends with those who took them. >> carley: jim hanson, thank
1:18 am
you. law enforcement agencies including elite border patrol agents are combing through maine to find the mass shooter suspect, robert card, but officers are facing millions of acres of forest and a suspect with survivalist training. >> todd: we'll ask a former police officer what it will take to get him. >> i saw him two weeks ago, helping his father hay this field, perfectly normal, nothing out of the norm, hard-working farming family doing their thing, you know. nothing out of the ordinary, that's my neighbor, it's crazy, i have a neighbor that did something really horrible. so it's -- i don't know, definitely going to take a long time to get through this, i guess.

1:24 am
well, he is capable of hiding for a long time, there is a lot of places you can be and never be seen. >> todd: bring in joe peters who served in the clinton and bush white houses. to carley's point, law enforcement i gather typically treat somebody who just murdered 18 people as armed and dangerous. how does the calculus change when you know he is a top marksman and knows the woods inside and out and knows hiding places and how to ambush law enforcement from the hiding places? >> the calculus changes dramatically and in his favor. time is on our side in law enforcement, but to the point you made, he's a trained marksman. he has military training, this is not urban or suburban search where as in idaho, there were ring door bell cameras or even the cavalcante situation, you
1:25 am
had ring cameras. this i liken to a gentlemen named eric freen, where the search went on in the woods for 48 days. mr. card knows the woods, it is hunting season in maine. if you see something, they all look alike with hunting clothes. he knows the river. there is potentially a river and boat involved, thus the coast guard presence and wouldn't be beyond to think he might try to sneak into canada. very different scenario. >> todd: great point on the hunting. i know somebody that got back from a moose hunt, it is a big deal, people wait their entire lives to do a moose hunt. there will be people in and around the woods with relationshipry, that gives him an advantage.
1:26 am
focusing on this from the law enforcement perspective, law enforcement gets trained in a plethora of scenarios, but do they get trained to deal with somebody who has military level expertise, almost to their own level of expertise in law enforcement? >> they get trained to deal with someone with mental health illness and someone who is psychotic or sociopath. when you add dimension of firepower and marksmanship, it goes beyond a normal officer's capability typically. thus the coast guard, atf, fbi and bortac unit. i worry about a secondary attack. it was an attack of al qaeda and we may not think this is terrorism, it is domestic terrorism like al qaeda nationally. whenever there was an attack, there was someone behind that person, in that case, a bomber,
1:27 am
human bomber. in this case, does card have accomplices, are there other people of like mind? will there be people who support him and shelter him and help him escape and that is something we can't stop thinking about. we can't have all assets forward and focused on him alone. >> todd: such a great point, your head needs to be on multiple swivel all the time. are you surprised we have not heard reports of cars stolen in the area. i think when you see a situation like this, you assume he ditched his subaru and expect to see a car stolen leading to a chase. does that lead you to believe this guy was uber prepared for an escape, maybe by boat or in the woods, didn't need to steal a car because he knew where he would head once the carnage was over. >> i am not surprised, it was
1:28 am
positioned with a boat at a dock. he may get desperate over days and have to steal another vehicle. the other dimension would be does he start to look to take hostages because right now if just him and law enforcement, even in the woods, we have flair system, forward-looking infrared and drones, if he manages to grab a hostage, he gets supplies and buys himself time to complicate the situation. >> todd: you mention time is on the officers side, that is true. officers are human, how do they maintain mental readiness when a search goes on hour by hour, day-by-day and week by week and so on? >> we have to replenish their resource like we do soldiers on the battlefield. planning, rest, food, shelter. we need to outlast him, not only is time on our side, time can help him be more desperate so
1:29 am
every officer has to be alert and ready because you never know which officer will come upon this individual. >> todd: joe peters, amazing insight, we appreciate your time. the u.s. launching airstrikes against target in syria, resounding response of attacks on our troops in the middle east. >> carley: we'll get reaction from mike tobin live in tel aviv, and dr. rebecca grant, coming up next. like rounded corners that resist peeling, with an array of active ingredients... and sizes to relieve your pain. salonpas. it's good medicine. attention hearing loss sufferers! do you have trouble keeping up with conversations? do you listen to tv on max volume? start hearing better today with rca's micro hearing aids. through rca's hearing america program, you can get these ultra discrete hearing aids at a special, introductory price of just $299.

targeting the u.s., being used by revolutionary gard corps. u.s. dropping airstrike on weapon depot and ammostorage area near abu kamal. it is unclear if there are iranian militants at the time of the strike. secretary lloyd austin says the united states does not seek conflict but attacks on american forces are unacceptable and must stop. he says narrowly tailored strikes self-defense were intended to protect the u.s. and they are separate from the conflict with israel and hamas. this comes as iranian foreign minister issued a stark warning to americans over involvement in the middle east. watch this. >> i won't, if genocide in gaza continue, they will not be a spare from this fire. it is our -- and west asia is

our region. >> brooke: the pentagon says there have been 19 attacks on u.s. bases just over the last 10 days, injuring 20 american troops. the pentagon confirming israel was not informed of the plan ahead of the airstrikes, coming on heels of president biden telling the ayatollah on wednesday not to get involved and warning of u.s. response, something spokesman john kirby reiterated thursday afternoon. guys. >> carley: thank you so much. lucas tomlinson is live on the ground in tel aviv with expertise on the latest moves by the united states. lucas, senior defense official says the airstrikes struck one storage area and one ammunition storage area near abu kamal. the quote is, we knew exactly what we were aiming at. were these specific locations chosen for a reason? >> lucas: there is no question, carley, this is part of the
1:37 am
escalation ladder. the united states had a red line about americans getting killed. no u.s. troops were killed in the 19 strikes, there was a contractor that died due to a heart attack as he was rushing into a bunker, similar to strikes that took place in march in eastern syria. why were the targets struck? this is largely ungoverned territory in abu kamal. you do not have too many people and that is what happened, they struck targets, infrastructure, weapons storage sites used by iran proxy forces, places u.s. jets could freely operate without worrying about other forces shooting back really, why the targets were struck. this suite of options, menu presented to president biden and this is step one in the escalation ladder and they say if the strikes continue, we have 900 u.s. troops in syria and 2500 troops in neighboring iraq,
1:38 am
if forces continue to get tar targeted. >> todd: lucas is expert in this. why did they use the f-16 for this, lucas? >> lucas: most fast-movers a are -- the f-16s were part of deployment a few months ago, the new jersey national guard recently deployed, most likely from the triple nickel fighter squadron. those were used because you have fighter jets on u.s.s. ford, if those jets launch, you fly over turker, syria, you don't want to fly over damascus with hezbollah there. you have to have permission and might be thinking why not tomahawk strike from the red sea, from carney or the ford,
1:39 am
swnt through the suez canal. you launch cruise missiles over saudi arabia, jordan, iraq, dicey and the pentagon wanted to strike quickly. launch viepers from the united arab emirates and iraq's prime minister said he is not key on rereitala tory attacks, this was designed to minimalize civilian casualties and did not want to take out iran-backed proxy fighters in eastern syria, it is large lee ungoverned area. couple of vipers can do the trick. >> carley: a lot of factors and calculations go into all of this to avoid escalation. lucas, thank you for joining us. bring in rebecca grant and national security analyst and international relations expert, to talk about this latest move
1:40 am
by the u.s. rebecca, defense secretary lloyd austin released a statement and said iran wants to hide its hand and deny a role in the attacks, we will not let them, calling out iran by name saying we know iran operates by proxy, we will not let you. what do you think about that message? what message does that send? >> this is getting serious for our u.s. forces throughout the middle east and i'm glad secretary austin said this is clearly iran's handy work. i got to say, carley, team biden, there is wishy washy language just out of step now with our enhanced military deployment and what we're asking our forces to do. like to see stronger language. i don't know why they are trying to soft pedal iran's involvement, let the f-16 strikes speak for themselves.
1:41 am
>> carley: what will the weekend look like for u.s. service members based there, can they anticipate airstrikes? >> really hard to say, i think no question the iran-backed militias, which are many groups throughout different countries are going to be looking for opportunities. our top priority for forces there is missile defense protection for them, that is why we see deployment of patriots and other systems. we've doubled striking power in the region with the new f-16 squadron, two carriers moving in. our forces there are really used to the threat from the iraina sh shayk -- iran militias. our forces can take whatever the proxy militia can dish out. >> carley: that should make every american proud. saudi arabia, qatar, jordan,
1:42 am
just to name a few. mideast government criticize israel but they don't like iran stirring up this crisis, either. what does that mean for possible partners that iran might be looking for down the road? >> well, remember, we have a major military base in qatar. it is true, they will criticize israel but behind the scenes, iran's chaos is backed by china and it is not anything anybody wants. that is why we saw success with abraham accord, israel and saudi, they know iran is creating far too much mischief and chaos, this is bad for business and all the way around. there is criticism, but no one wants to see iran expand war. >> carley: there is russia and high-raking members of hamas
1:43 am
were in russia yesterday and met with putin and released statement praising putin's position on this conflict. if there were questions whether russia supports terrorism or not before this, there is your answer. where does russia factor into all of this? >> isn't that just crazy and of course russia has purchased drones from iran to use against ukraine and f-16s doing that strike, russia has aircraft in syria operating in that air space. i know the russians saw that strike get carried out, good message to them, as well, don't get involved. >> carley: love that messaage, dr. rebecca grant, thank you. todd. >> todd: breaking news, massive coordinated effort to find maine shooting suspect robert card. atq, fbi and alite border unit joining the unit.
