israel, p a lapide. i want to ask about the hostage negotiations and the rhetoric out of the us. in the past couple days we've heard more vocally administration officials calling for a humanitarian pause in fighting to get the hostages out if that can be achieved. we've seen somewhat of a delay in getting this ground operation fully underway. is there any daylight between the israelis and the us in terms of an appetite for a humanitarian pause. do you think it's possible to get the hostages out and that you are dealing with anyone from the hamas side acting in good faith in these negotiations. >> no one and hamas is acting in good faith about anything.
10:35 am
they are just using the hostages has the way they are using their own people as human shields. among people who were kidnapped, 9-month-old girl, do you think someone who wouldn't kidnap and abduct a 9-month-old baby is someone you can negotiate with reason with? no. what they are trying to do is be able to delay what we are doing in order to make sure hamas loses its military power while using babies and women and the elderly as human shields. we will do everything in our power to release the hostages. this is our duty to the people of israel and the families of gaza. at the same time, we are not going to allow hamas to get away with the massacre or to stay a military power.

10:38 am
what hamas is doing is trying to prevent our military operation while using everybody, their own people, our children, the hostages, and journalists, as human shields. this is monstrous. this is preposterous. this is against any rule of engagement we know. this is the way terrorist organizations operate. the thing is we will do everything in our power to make sure journalists are able to do their work because this is part of the functioning of democracy. at the same time they have 2 understand we have no rules and are not bound to anything. they will shoot journalists if they think this will go as a good headline in the wordpress. they have to be careful and we just warn them about the risks and perils in the war zone when fighting a terror organization.
10:39 am
jackie: israel has been putting out warnings to anyone in gaza about the need to get out and using a lot of methods to spread that information but i also want to ask about something you said a couple days ago about the functioning of the israeli government and whether or not it is doing enough for israelis many of whom need more support from the government. you raise the issue about public communication, care for evacuated citizens, need to help small and medium businesses who had their owners or workers call up as reservists, expanding financial protections for front-line residents and folks being called up to serve in the military. what is your assessment of how the government is doing right now?
