right now they say there's a second phase. you got the destruction of hamas you also have hostages. what is the consideration for the israeli government as they try to pursue both objectives? >> yes certainly pete. this operation characteristically is very different than the offensive operation that israel has conducted in gaza. and the reason is because the objective is a difference. in the past they wanted to go in and set the hamas terror organization back a number of years kill as many leaders as they could certainly fighters as well and destroy as much military infrastructure as they could. so they went in hard and fast and got out in a few weeks. this mission that is been given to the military is to dismantle the terrorist military and organization and its political entity. that is very different than what is been assigned in the past.
5:22 am
as opposed to hard and fast this is slow and gradual because of the mission that has been is ben assigned so the campaign planning is really quite different. there's been extensive bombing here that we have seen now for two plus weeks against actionable targets certainly they have spent a lot of effort and as you have pointed this out and your colleagues in dealing with the tunnel complex and making certain is much of that is destroyed as possible without having to go through civilian infrastructure to destroy it as you pointed out dealing with the hospital itself and other actionable targets certainly iss much military infrastructure as they can in that bombing. then they started what we in the military call a shaping operation they conducted raids against actionable targets these were ground assault raids supported by airpower when it needed. it was in and out. they had targets. they knew they were they had a sense of what that is then they
5:23 am
return out of gaza after that was completed. now they have conducted an offense of where the troops are actually staying it's been conducted on multiple axes from the north and from the east. they are going slow systematically for a couple of reasons. one, they want to preserve not taking a lot of casualties themselves the civilian casualties but the overarching shadow of this operation is very different and you have mentioned it, are the hostages themselves it's a critical part of this operation it's impacting the tempo of the operation as it unfolds before our eyes. pete: you think it's holding back the tempo is negotiations are ongoing? i they meant to increase leverage for the hostage situation, general? >> yes certainly. they are going slow so they can
5:24 am
understand i'm not certain they know exactly where the hostages are we have no reason to know the actual facts of what is driving it. certainly negotiations have taken place. four have come out they came close and that didn't work that's a factor in what's taking place here. they are certainly working on hostage rescue and is complicated as that is but that excellent people who know how to do that sort of work. all of those are factors in this operation that are taking place. but it is very different from the past. i just got around fingerprints all over it. arrondissement the hostage taking a business since the 1980s. it has been the mantra of what they do. hamas -- mica sent they haven't done some of it but it's always been very limited. this taking of hostages over 200 plus now up to 2:30 plus, that is around fingerprints.
5:25 am
they wanted hamas to be able to use this as leverage in the operation. that is taking place before our eyes as well. pete: no doubt it's completely unprecedented for we are almost out of time general real quick you have seen that hospital. eventually you want to take the headquarters want to destroy hamas is going at the israeli boots dismantling the tunnels underneath that civilian hospital, right? >> ois no doubt about it. for all the command and control another military infrastructure that exists in the city they will have to put troops in there to deal with most of that they have not been able to destroy using their bombing for their artillery. then also a very difficult challenge for them is they have two separate the terrorist from the people at some point when the terrorist terrorists know ts are saturating the entire city scent of them are no longer going to fight to their going to try to blend into that
5:26 am
population. the mission is to dismantle hamas and not have a comeback ik weeks and months later. that will take some time and that is something u.s. forces have a lot of experience in dealing with in iraq and afghanistan. pete: that's a heck of a task general jack keane thank you for your time good to see if you're. >> great talking to you. pete: party pressure democrat congressman phillips launches his bid for president all while biting continues to slip in the polls. well and i go off the wall to find out all about the latest democrat who throws his hat in the ring and the other dynamics as we approach 2024. that is next. ♪ it takes two to make it outta sight ♪ ♪ it takes two to make a thing go right ♪ ♪ it takes two to make it outta sight ♪ ♪ one, two, get loose now ♪ ♪ it takes two to make a... ♪ ♪ it takes two to make a... ♪ ♪ it takes two to make a... ♪

fascinating. i'm not sure we even have the answer yet on this. competency and ability that has been there. that is not new. democrats are very divided on israel and palestine and the palespalestinians and apparently hamas as well. they are democrats upset with joe biden and his in his responn support of israel. pete: it's too much support for its roots exactly right. that is a big number 86% you'd want to be one 100% of future sitting president. that period of time, that much number you'd look at the stance he took because they thought go to israel, travel around the world show leadership contrast with afghanistan that will help him. but the stance for israel's hurting inside his own party. >> 53% democratic voters would like to see someone else's the nominee. >> it's a really big number. that remains a really big problem here is the thing if this is your answer i want someone else as a nominee you need someone else to be the nominee laughed at.
