>> israeli stroop troops are now on the ground in gaza, the next stage of the war is underway with relentless attacks from ground, air and sea. prime minister netanyahu vows that battle has just begun. and iran warns israel has crossed red lines. good evening i think jonathan hunt in israel with a special two hour edition of fox news live it is 4 a.m. monday morning, here in jerusalem, once again, people in the region will be waking this morning to the violent sounds of war. over the weekend we saw most intense bombardment since the war between hamas and israel began this month. and idf troops have raised the israeli flag in gaza as they continue to push into the palestinian territory.
12:02 am
and war casualties are climbing death toll in gaza now reported to have passed 8,000. more than 1400 people have died on the israeli side. unprecedented numbers. in decades of israeli-palestinian violence. civil unrest also becoming a problem across gaza, 3 dozen trucks entered on sunday, largest aid shipment against the war again, humanitarian workers tell us that the assistance is still short of the needs and thousands of people broke into warehouses to take flour and basic high scehygiene products. the world watches and wonders, all this carnage, what does it mean for the future of the region. over the next two hours, we'll be bringing you team coverage of latest
12:03 am
developments in the mideast and in u.s. we have alex hoff in delaware, and former israeli ambassador to u.n. danny danon will join us in moment we begin with alex hogan close to southern border. good morning to you alex. reporter: you can see the border with gaza, the lights shining just over my holder that is just -- shoulder that is how close we are, he can hear artillery early into the hours, the idf last night raised the number of hostages taken into gaza 239 people country defense minister sat down with many of the families last night talking about highly qualified people he said are part of the defense team, idf is pushing forward with the offensive releasing this video saying went last day
12:04 am
struck 450 hamas targets, we have seen spoke rising from gaza as israel pummeled the area. going after hamas infrastructure. the show of force we're seeing will put more pressure on militants to return the hostages, spokesperson said that soldiers and residents are ready for the conflict. >> this should be the last war, this is the expectation of all of us from this situation. and thes redents as well, no matter how hard it is for them, the residents have the patients, they are begging state and military to do what they need do it end it, once and fore all. reporter: country is steel reeling after october 7 attacks, among effort is collecting the vehicles destroyed or set on fire of cars that were driven off the road when people were
12:05 am
killed. in all of, that in preparation of returning this country to some sense of normalcy in gaza daily bomb bashed bombardment creating concern, president biden held talks with prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying that flow of humanitarian aid into gaza needs to be improved what we're seeing just hours ago, the largest aid convoy to arrive in gaza strip, 33 trucks, but jonathan, aids workers say this is not enough yet. >> you are seeing and hearing a lot of out going from the i israeli position you are close to firing into gaza, i wonder about incoming. given the city has been one of the many targets for hamas rockets. have you seen and heard many of those rockets coming in today and tonight?
12:06 am
>> we have multiple times needed to leave everything, run to shelters, one point we left camera we capturedded footage of the rockets coming toward where they are, they were intercepted. this has opinion a target for the last several weeks. so the city is largely a ghost town. 90% of the people who live here, have fled. you hear the sound. that was out going, there is no way to know who might still be here, when that incoming articl artillery could happen, 10 seconds is nothing in terms of time you need to get yourself to safety unless you are directly next to a shelter, thankfully, we are. >> alex we very much impeach yappreciate you being in.
12:07 am
we'll be back to you throughout the next two hours. >> and president biden returns to white house from telecommunicatitell delaware tomorrow, he spent the weekend talking to middle east leaders. the white house says that president discussed minimizing civilian casualties and gets hostages released during his conversation with u.s israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, alex hoff with more. reporter: good evening, in addition to prime minister netanyahu president biden spoke with egypttion presidentipresident. the focus wassa accelerating aid to get to gaza. and to netanyahu, the president said, i reiterate that israel has every right to defend itse citizens
12:08 am
from terrorism and a responsibility to do so. -- vice president harris added to that in a interview on 60 minutes. >> without any question, has a right to defend itself that said, it is very important that there be no conflation between hamas and the palestinians, the palestinians deserve equal measures of safety and security. reporter: for first time in three weeks we're seeing u.s. and allies disagree with israel on something, over the idea of a potential humanitarian pause to military action to get aid into gaza or hostages out, israel has rejected calls, saying that hamas cannot be trusted to honor such a pause. a concern that national security advic adviser jake
12:09 am
sullivan did not dismiss. >> it would be a good thing to get hostages out, you can bethleh bethlehthat hamas would use that time. >> tomorrow the saudi defense minister reportedly visiting white house, administration would not confirm it was the case. >> alex, what do you get the sense that amount of pressure that president biden is putting on prime minister netanyahu regarding humanitarian corridors? we hear talk. is the sense you are getting from your sauces souse sources it is intense or let's do it if we can, approach? >> i think that the we have seen the tune change in a small way, statements from the conversations that
12:10 am
president had with netanyahu. that it was first and foremost, we support israel defending itself, now reiterated with focus on humanitarian aid, president wants to make sure that u.s. is on the right side of that part of the story. deeply intertwined with fact we want hostages out of gaza. for those hostages to be in a condition where they come out, gaza has to be in a condition with people can survive within it. >> so many complexities, alexandria hoff thank you. >> joining me now, retired lieutenant colonel dakota wood, great to have you with us, what do you make of the ground movements that we've seen over the weekend appears rather than "shock and awe," israel is taking a
12:11 am
more gradual approach to moving the troops in. start military maneuvers? >> absolutely, this spelling difference between urban combat and tank warfare in an open desert, when you have a lot of maneuver space you can do those things with maneuver forces, tanks, you know long range fields of fire, you can see where the ep menemy is, you get into an urban environment, every window, basement, doorway, rubbled streets, that makes movement difficult, hamas has something what over 300 miles of tunnels. you have this vertical 3 dimensional battlefield, air power can only do so much. can only apply a bomb against a specific target, it takes infantry on the ground supported by tanks to get the anti-tank weapons, out of range, right?
12:12 am
they have to get on those streets inside of the buildings, in the sewer systems and the underground structures. to find and root out the enemy. and to hope we find the hostages and rescue them. there is no other option but to go in on the ground into gaza. >> and dakota, we seem to see here, we're not getting the complete picture for good reasons from the idf . but appear to see the troops moving town the beach, west side of gaza, from the northern border. and maybe they are going to slowly move across into the meat if you like of gaza city? but seems that is kind of a pincher movement to come town that west side when you -- down that west side when you control the northern edge and eastern edge with your borders you have, is that what is going on here? >> it is a an e en v is
12:13 am
an e en ve. >> fighters and support their cause. they will do this complete circlement to everybo extent they can to prevent resources from coming to hamas and contain them, pr slow methodical move through a city to minimize civilian casualties, minimize that but also most affect of against effective against the the enemy. >> what about calls for humanitarian pause, we hear as alex hoff reported there is some pressure from the u.s. for israel to bring about some sort of humanitarian pause. at least allow a lot more aid to get in there then from various other factions
12:14 am
much louder calls for a complete ceasefire. what do you can make of the merit of those calls, dakota? >> biden administration is trying to have 't both ways, either they have never studied warfare, or they don't understand and appreciate the threat that hamas poses to israel. inspite of facts about beheaded babies and murdered young people and the atrocities perpetrateed. the abjecty it second. >> humanitarian aid coming in will be taken by hamas. energy, food, medical supplies, to sustain their effort to combat israel. israel has no interest in excess civilian casualties, every daieeverybody shared
12:15 am
on s social media is more pro propaganda. they have no objective, no interest no gain to administration more than what -- damage more than what needs to be damaged or injury more. the flame is the blame is on hamas.. >> thank you so much lut lieutenant colonel dakota wood. let's bring in now. danny danon, who served as israel ambassador to united nations from 2015 to 2020, he is a member of israel's parliament. the knesset. thank you for being with us. i wonder who is making the
12:16 am
calls here? in terms of what happens minute by minute with the israeli military from your extensive experience. is this prime minister netanyahu making every single call here? or is this the leaders of the idf making the final decisions? >> so we have a strong democracy jonathan, we have a cabinet, the cabinet makes the decisions, and the military implements, these listen to the military, i sit on the foreign affairs and defense committee we meet with the generals almost every other day. and also with the cabinet ministers, we see how it goes. and we are strong bond between the military and the government. but at the end of the day, the responsibility is on the government. once the government decided we want to eliminate hamas, and spring the hostages back
12:17 am
to israel, now it is military to do, that and to decide thousand do it, how -- how to do it how to maneuver, and they are doing it as we spike speak, my advice, take your time, do it slowly, we don't want casualties to our forces and minimize casual to civilians and gaza and hamas wants to do b opposite, they want to increase the casualties, i trust idf to do what snided what is needed to achieve the goals we set for them. >> you mentioned word responsibility. i know this is early to get into it. but clearly there are a lot of israelis who are asking questions, i feel from my short time here on this visit, the questions are getting louder, who bears responsibility for the intendgenthe intelligence failures? do you have any thoughts on
12:18 am
this, i know it difficult when you are in middle of a war, but what bears responsibility? >> what happened in last 48 hours, was i think a mistake. we all agreed that we're not dealing now with the inquiry. we will postpone to day after we win the war and defeat hamas, then, as we speak. you know, we start to hear about concerns, and people start the blame game, i told my colleagues enough, don't do it now, we don't plaigt blame the military, i trust the military. we will do the inquiry what the day comes. those who made mistakes will have to pay a price, but today we por work together united to defeat evil and hamas. i know it is tempting, we all to look at what happened and ask the questions, but i think now we are to be pch abopatient about it.
12:19 am
>> mr. ambassador, tap into your experience at united nations for a moment, we're expecting a meeting of security council monday, assume you would expect not a great deal of support from the u.n., given its history. >> no expectations they passed a resolution calling for a cease-fire, they could not condemn hamas, they could not speak about our victims about the babies that were kidnapped and 3 weeks ago. so we have no expectations from u.n. and i will tell you something more, even if they passed a resolution against israel woe wi we will continue. >> okay mr. ambassador i'm sorry i have t to interrupt, a break we'll be back to you later in the hour thank you so much. >> coverage of the war in israel continues next.

12:24 am
gaza strip and they intend to stay there. they have raised the israeli flag. and we're told that more of those troops will move in fradly. let gradually, we bringa erin cohen. freight to have you her great to have you, what struck me the troops were going in. a lot of people expected a "shock and awe" approach with hundreds of tanks, and instead it seems that idf is doing a dpraddi gradual move. and build slowly. >> what you see, we have a term, it means this is a slow and deliberate clear, fool us once, shame on us,
12:25 am
israel, followed hamas, into gaza last time we had an incursion it got bloody quickly, there was a lot of casualties to the israeli sides, the units that went in, israel slowing to down, iting not be shame on us gain. israel has a lot of intelligence they have been able to actualize in a short period of time, pegasus system listens to phone calls in gaza to get real-time intelligence, they are also using is a layered approach. nobody is stays static, you have those small pockets of special ops, my opinion they will be layered with tank units they are systematically but carefully dismantling the leadership, neutralizing dozens of hamas leaders at a time, starts
12:26 am
with cell phones cut up on, and the disabled. as tanks and special ops move in they the have dozens of aircraft overhead providing support, they will keep rotating so they are not moving target, israel taking its time right now there no need to rush in there, focus on the tunnels. jonathan: at some point, aaron, if you are going to eradicate hamas. you have to go into those tunnels, troops have to go in there will be hand-to-hand combat at some point, or does the idf have the technology that will renter thrender that a moot point? >> i think there has been a misconception, people have idea that by they have to push in with all 300
12:27 am
thousand reservists, the ground war in my professional opinion started about two and a half weeks ago, this is a counterterrorism focused operation, it is special operations based. we'll see an extended operation over months, 6 months to a year, iz let's will conti israel will continue to pick apart and get intelligence, then work selecselectively, i don't think we'll see a monster push, i think it will be israel's finest special operations units, that general staff reconnaissance unit imam focused on hostages and focused on tunnels we have up to 220 throug, hostages. this is a work in progress. work but i don't think you will see a men sto a
12:28 am
monster push. jonathan: aaron there is nobody better than you to guide us through the complexities, we'll be back with more of our live coverage of israel's war against hamas. back in a flash.

12:33 am
the israeli troops now in gaza strip, the defense minister said they are not leaving and time soon [speaking in native tongue] reporter: israeli forces spending a third night in gaza. covered by drones and stacked by helicopter gunships and jets, idf raised the israeli flag in for the first time since 2005, israel sent mechanized forces into gaza begin tryinfriday night. you have film from a drone overhead, popular sentiment here is that the population supports this incursion to gaza, we spoke with a gentleman here he would like to see israel nuke iran, not just in gaza where israeli
12:34 am
forces have been active, commandos launched a raid in rest bank today. the idf rigged a leader's thousand plhouse to blow it. and a former member of the golani brigade. >> i hope first, gaza will be wiped out, not because we want but because we have to de fedefend ourselves, i hope our forces will go in find out of t ought -- all of the hostages and bring them back without negotiations. reporter: about half of the hostages are foreign nationals, including up to 10 americans. jonathan: a difficult decision for the government of israel, and for the

12:40 am
no, i don't have any information about my children. and the father. i don't know wh know what conditions they are kept, i know they are under ground. it is a bad condition, i have to say my child, my boy, he was just celebrating his 12 years old birthday in gaza, they mom, she was 80 years old, carmela, she was just celebrated her 80 years old birthday. and just after the day after, we count out she was kidnapped and murdered. with my niece. what can i tell you? you can imagine, it is like your little boy, kidnapped with his pajama, cruelly
12:41 am
taken from the house from a safe place from his bed. and then disappeared. now for three weeks. for three weeks. no information. i don't know who nothing about them, you know. >> hadas, i cannot imagine the pain you of are going through, i wonder what you make of prime minister netanyahu's actions regards hostages and whether you believe, some of the family do there should be an everyone for everyone swap, israeli hostages returned for israel releasing palestinian prisoners it holds do you support that? >> i think the all --
12:42 am
nationality, must make sure to release them immediately. okay? they must get an agreement. and to release to make a prison exchange, yes. to make a ceasefire. to do the best to bring them home. immediately. they can't be a victim of this war. you can't make a war on expecexpense of children and babies it is unbelievable. i think they must you know, this must be the main priority, the main thing. nothing else. of course, -- >> do you believe that the prime minister is approaching this in the right way?
12:43 am
>> i want to believe, i want to believe. he is behaving in a wise way. i want to believe they are doing their best. but i am very terrified from you know they went into gaza, i don't know if it can hurt. i think our children are in a huge danger in the middle of this war. we all have a broken heart. terrified and like a nightmare. that three weeks nightmare. since they went to gaza, even more, i can't sleep or eat. we can't think about anything else. we are just terrified. i have to trust it. you know, i have to trust my government they are doing their best. but the all world must
12:44 am
understand, and to make a big pressure to make an agreement to send them home, as quick as possible, i want to my girl and my son to be freedom, normal life, to go back. jonathan: of course, hadas, the whole world hears your message, right now. we're all heart broken for you. and we all look forward to the day that we can vow, here -- have you on here and see you reunited with your family. hadas kalderon thank you. >> we must not forget. it is a really cruel hands, you know. like isis and al qaeda, they are like monsters, we know of how it will end, we must rush, we have a small opportunity, we must rush it

jonathan: pro-palestinian protests expanding in the world this weekend. with demonstrators filling streets of madrid. and athens today. jeff paul with more. reporter: we're seeing protests all over the world, thousands getting together to voice their opposition to what is happening in gaza and israel, hoping somehow it will be enough to help stop the war. one of those places madrid, spain, thousands waved palestinian flags and chaptchanted in chip, it's not war it's a genocide. some calling prime minister netanyahu a murderer. >> it is a shame what shaping to palestinian people, and whole of europe are supporting it we should take to streets and mobilize
12:50 am
there is at least a cease-fire. reporter: elsewhere in world, a large group of protester seen in beirut, lebanon, a sea of palestinian and i islamic group flags, and similar pro-palestinian demonstrations held in india, saying that world is standing silent as people in gaza are being bombed and many are left without food, water and medicine and essentials to live. >> they are dying. in the darkness. there is no light. it is just so cruel. we can not just accept it. reporter: in london several were recorded after estimated -- arrested after estimated 100 thousand gathered to protest the on going war, several arrested to suspicion of hate crimes, two were arrested for assaulting police officers, one of the officers had to be transported to the hospital with a head injury
12:51 am
but is expected to make a full recovery. jonathan: jeff paul from london thank you very much. >> let's bring back in danny danon former israeli ambassador to united nations. and member of israel's parliament. mr. ambassador, when you see the pro-palestinian protests we're supportive of concept of free speech but when you hear things like israel is guilty of war crimes there must be a cease-fire to protect the palestinian team. what is -- people, if you were standing in front of those protesters what would you say to them? >> i would ask them what about the victims, that were massacred and kidnapped israelis, i have not seen them marching streets when we were butchered three weeks ago, you know this since sisince is incitement -- it is incitement. today in russia a plane from came from israel and landed at app airport in russia and
12:52 am
muslim radicals walked into the airport, pay got into the plane, they were looking for israeli and looking for jews, at last minute they were stopped by security forces. incitement leads to violent, we include all governments to not a well you incitement. those who call for violence should be arrested and stopped, this is just the beginning of the war we should not allow it to happen. jonathan: we're looking at video now, of that attack in russia. ambassador, at the airport in, it is extraordinary to think those kind of things could happen, it does make you suspicious at least that certain governments are not trying to clampdown on this kind of absolute disorder, does it not? >> absolutely, you know have so seen calls from russian government they have not
12:53 am
condemned violence and they called both sides for ceasefire. you cannot make that equation between israel and hamas terrorist, you have a terrorist organization, and you have a state, and we were attacked unprovoked on october 7, it was unprovoked attack against israel we should not happy accept that language and demand authorities make sure that jews are safe in the world. jonathan: what of the question of humanitarian aid getting into gaza mr. ambassador should be there more aid getting in. is that just i iz let israel's responsibility? >> so, i tell you what the challenge is that hamas is taking advantage of aid. you know two days ago, unwa they tweeted to hamas raid aid storage and stole fuel
12:54 am
and medicine and food, after two hours they erased that tweet, we know that control in gaza is in the hands of hamas, whatever you bring in to gaza you have to make sure it goes to people who need it, not the hamas, you don't want to fuel the war fanc against israel this say very sensitive issue. jonathan: i think from the grandmother freed from being a hostage in there last week, mr. ambassador, we heard her say that down in the tunnels where she was kept, there are plenty of med camedical supplies, and food, presum presumably much of the aids had been being stock piled, this has
12:55 am
been plans for a very long time. >> absolutely, they have enough fuel and food in tunnels, now, they are asking for more fuel, they just want to make sure they have enough to fight with us for weeks and months, we should not allow it. we're working with international community to mind ways to guarantee that aid will go to people in gaza, but it is really hard, because the u.n. is weak, hamas don't listen to them. but we try to find a mechanism that will support the population in it, but not enforce hamas, we'll in the give fuel to those who are fighting againsts than us. jonathan: mr. ambassador, i have been coming here to israel for more than two decades now, i have to say i have never seen this country more united, are you proud of the unity? do you think it will hold? >> first, i'm very proud, you see people volunteering, my son is in south with the
12:56 am
people who are down there. everyone is sending stuff to the soldiers, and able to put politics aside and walk together as a nation, and jewish people are united. people from all over the world, are sending stuff to the troops, and we know that we will prevail it will be a language -- long operation, at the end of the day we have no choice but to defeat evil. jonathan: are in mr. ambassador danny danon, it has been a pleasure and honor thank you so much for being with us, ambassador. >> thank you. jonathan: 5 a.m. here in jerusalem. our live coverage of israel at war will continue as israel troops move in to gaza and hold their positions, raising the israeli flag inside of gaza, that is war that the prime minister has said, will be long, and will be difficult, it at this hour, it is continuing.

[speaking native language] >> good evening, i'm jonathan hunt in israel with continuing coverage of the latest developments in the middle east and reaction from around the world. it's 5:00 a.m. in jerusalem. people in the region will be waking this morning to violent sounds of war. over the weekend, the most

intense bombardment since the war began. idf troops raised the israeli flag inside gaza as they continue to push into the palestinian territory, triggering from iran ominous words that israel "crossed the reed lines," and the pentagon has a message of its own. the u.s. will respond in iran fires on american troops in the region. one of our bases in northeastern syria was attacked overnight, the latest in a string of attacks on u.s. military bases in the middle east since hamas initial attack on israel. the white house still struggling to get humanitarian aid to gaza while hoping to get 239 hostages out. sadly, the fate of those held hostage like future of the middle east remains deeply
1:03 am
troubling tonight. alex hogan is live in sderot where many of seeking shelter due to rocket and warning sirens going off. hello, alex. >> hi, jonathan. the israeli defense force says it struck military infrastructure in syria, after hours earlier we heard from the idf they were reporting launches from syria to israel. we are here near the gaza border and i want to give our viewers a look at what it looks like when rockets are fired here. we immediately ran for cover, but our camera outside was able to capture what it looks like. top, right part of your screen, you'll see it is intercepted. constant sound of artillery overhead, jets and tanks
1:04 am
continuing and idf saying they are pushing further and further in on northern gaza. israel says it manage to take out more than 450 targets, grinding on the offensive and conditions worsen for civilians, largest convoy arrived this, mo. three dozen aid trucks. u.s. president joe biden reiterated in conversations yesterday with prime minister netanyahu the need to follow international humanitarian law after thousands of people there went to a warehouse stealing food and hygiene products, underlying their desperation. on the israeli side of the border, little towns turned building into war rooms like this. someone in the room pulled footage showing what he saw hamas militants driving into the town and gunning down a father
1:05 am
and son. that was three weeks ago, but three weeks laters, it is quiet in this town, a ghost town, 90% of the city has fled. it is far from a quiet night. we have been here since yesterday afternoon and heard jets overhead, drones and constant artillery. jonathan. >> jonathan: the people of sderot have lived with being roets coming in for years and they are used to it. vast majority of people have left this time. it speaks to just how different this war is and how eerie it must be to be there in what is essentially a ghost town now, alex, can you give us a sense of how that feels? >> it's a strange thing to hear when we go to conflict zones, people talking about the fact they feel used to hearing the
1:06 am
sound of sirens and rocket attacks and that has become normalized to them. this is a very different conflict, as you mentioned in your last show, a very different stage israel and conflict with palestinian, they have not seen. once again, we are hearing artillery in the background early in the morning, this is ramping up. this is a quiet town. the streets are bare, mainly just a military presence that we see. there are 10% of the city population, residents who still live here. the city is urging them to get to other parts of the country that are safer and further away from this and they are urging them to do so. jonathan. >> jonathan: we are grateful for your courage and reporting this early monday morning in israel. in sderot, thank you. president biden set to return to the white house from delaware on
1:07 am
monday. he spoke with leaders in the middle east as attacks ramp up. the white house says president biden talked about limiting casualtieses and getting hostages released while on a call with prime minister netanyahu. alexandria has more. good evening, alexandria hoff. >> alexandria: president biden spoke with the egyptian president, as well. specifically in the call with prime minister netanyahu, the president said, i reiterated israel has every right to defend citizens from terrorism, but in a manner consistent with humanitarian law. the biden administration is supporting the idea of temporary pause on military action to allow for aid to get into gaza or for hostages to get out if they have been released.
1:08 am
israel has rejected that saying hamas would take advantage of a pause. >> if you stop and pause, it gives opportunity for hamas to dig in more and be able to lay more booby traps. it is a judgement call that has to be made on intelligence right now. >> alexandria: vice president harris said the administration has not plan to send combat troops to gaza. they were asked about iranian proxies firing in syria that the u.s. responded with. >> what is the message to iran? >> don't. >> as president biden said? >> exactly, one word, pretty straight-forward. >> sullivan spoke to that. we are taking every necessary to
1:09 am
increase forces and vigilance and work to try to keep this conflict that is in israel from spinning out into a regional conflict. the risk is real and vigilance is high. >> tomorrow the saudi defense minister is expected reportedly to pay a visit to the white house. the white house has not confirmed that. if you look ahead to next month, president biden is expected to meet with chinese president xi jinping, taking place at a summit in san francisco. jonathan. >> jonathan: what is the sense you are getting of the level of concern at the white house that this could develop into a regional conflict? how worried are they about that? >> alexandria: what we've been hearing is that president biden has been treating this delicately, because of that,
1:10 am
there are critics of the president saying he is treating it too delicately and overly required about iran getting involved that would require u.s. troops or hezbollah would get involved. i think this is something president biden is trying to balance. you have who aggressive wing of the democratic party that the president has not adhered to their demands, those cries will become louder. it is a balancing act for president biden. >> jonathan: thanks so much. bring in mitchell barrack, based here. he served with prime minister netanyahu when he was deputy minister. thank you for being here, great to have your experience. i want to focus on prime minister netanyahu because you know him and have worked with him so closely.
1:11 am
how do you believe he is handling this? it is a horrible position, let's make that clear, to be in, this situation, so many complexities and difficulties. how do you think he's led israel through this. >> i would use one word, failure, split into two places. first his leadership until october 7 and his leadership from october 7. he failed in both places. he failed, we've had the worst year in the history of israel in the last year he's been in power dealing with judicial reform, he split the country in two to pass it. meaning israelis were hating each other over judicial reform and we don't know why it was necessary. since october 7, total failure. he has not taken responsibility. yesterday he attacked the idf and security services and put out a tweet he then retracted. >> jonathan: we heard the prime
1:12 am
minister say, i was wrong issue not words you normally hear from a man like netanyahu. >> the base understands netanyahu thinks the army is responsible and he is not responsible. since then, he met with hostage families once. he hasn't visited hospitals. his wife is in hiding. his son are learning in cambridge. he has not empathized with anyone or mentioned brave reap of the people in the kibbutz. people have lost everything, 150,000 israeli refugees in palestine. >> jonathan: people forget there is a huge number of israelis displaced in this and talking of the refugee crisis, i wonder
1:13 am
what you make of president biden's role in this, the pressure that is being put on the israelis from the white house for a temporary pause to allow humanitarian aid. how is president biden doing in your view? >> president biden is saving israel at this point, the leader we don't have, he empathizing with the israelis and says it is going to be okay and he is actually running the war. our team of netanyahu is not capable of doing it, they did not have a strategy on october 7 and don't now. >> jonathan: on a personal level, your son is in the israeli military, how are you feeling about what the military is doing, the risks they are taking and what they are having to deal with. >> i have two sons serving on active duty in the tank and one in the brigade. i am proud of these boys. they are here for the fight to
1:14 am
defend their family, defend their country and defend the jewish people temperature is very concerning. i have zero confidence in prime minister netanyahu, zero confidence in someone that trashed the army and generals. he caught us off guard on october 7, it is horrible los of what happened. soldiers from the ground up are motivated. one of my son, they have replaced his commanders because they have been killed. there is no choice at this point, it is a privilege for them to be serving at this point and to defend their people. >> jonathan: they are an extraordinary force and we look forward to the day your sons are back with you. thank you for being here this early morning in jerusalem. bring in retired army briggadeer general, who served acting deputy under secretary of
1:15 am
defense for policy at the pentagon. general, thank you so much for being here. what do you make of the military action we've seen over the weekend? it seems to me a lot of people were expecting shock and awe, thousands of troops pouring across the border. israeli defense forces seem to be doing this in gradual fashion. is that smart strategy in your view? >> hi, jonathan, great to be with you. i think what the idf is doing is on point. they're developing the situation, doing intelligence preparation on the battlefield. they have a complex battlefield they are going to fight on. it has rubble andun ittels and high rises and booby traps. remember iranians were number one supplier of explosive devices in iraq and i'm sure that technology is in gaza. so i think what the idf is
1:16 am
doing, their strength is intelligence collection and they are building the picture and doing limited strikes to weaken the command control, logistics and armorment of hamas and then to go in and penetrate where it makes sense to tighten up logistics and come in again and move and set piece. if you get too far in, you can envelope yourself by the tunnels. >> jonathan: some point, general, there will be presumably hand to hand combat necessary once they go down into the tunnels and israeli people, you would say as veteran of the military have to prepare for casualtieses that will inevitably come. >> yeah, inevitably. this is tough business and that
1:17 am
speaks again to taking time to get intelligence right because your flesh and blood is going in there. the gentleman you were speaking with has two sons, one in the north and one in the south and -- going up against absolute savages in hamas. it is going to be brutal four man stack going into a building and having to determine friend or foe. hamas hides behind civilians and have their headquarter below the hospital. they are making it hard. >> jonathan: potential for regional conflict, look at the way the u.s. military is positioned the extra forces be ing sent to the region, the bases we are seeking to defend, are you comfortable with the way the u.s. military is currently
1:18 am
positioned in this region? >> jonathan, i'm not comfortable with anything with this whole situation right now. i think the appeasement strategy of the biden administration has undermined israel and certainly deference to the gentleman you had on there, if president biden is their savior, they have a long way to go because they can't unhinge themselves from iran for some reason and they are giving money to iran, support to iran. think of the message you are sending the iranian people by unlocking $6 billion that you know iran is going to use for weapons and be able to support
1:19 am
the houthi rebels and troops in iraq, the hezbollah in the north and hamas. iran is running this, this is their war. and by cozying up to iran, it led up down this path and they have been hood winked. biden administration has a lot of explaining to do and need to get serious about countering iranian influence in the region. >> jonathan: anthony tata, thank you for being with us. our coverage of the war in israel, which continues to rage, will go on after this break. this she■s a hero moment. even today, only a quarter of stem graduates are women. they'd go, oh, you don't look like an engineer. there is this preconception. some things are for boys. but diversity drives innovation. my goal is to really flip the script.

>> jonathan: intensive anti-israeli protests on college campuses. near tulane, protesters getting violent in what has become a viral video. for more on that growing, bring in professor and director of ucla center for studies.
1:24 am
before we get to the bigger picture that you know almost better than anybody, as a professor, what do you make of protests on college campuses. is it free speech or some cases going much too far? >> well, i think it's both those things. it is expregsz of free speech, students have right to protest and voice their opinion, but what is happening as a result of some protests is that jewish students in particular are finding themselves harassed, intimidated. there are incidents where they have been forced to hide fro protesters. i should say that some of the statements made by some students in these protests are also
1:25 am
really disturbing in the way in which they seem to accept hamas attacks against innocent civilians in israel. in terms of the rhetoric are of slogans, particularly in the atmosphere of college campuses. not all, but some, is creating what many jewish students describe as hostile environment for them. >> jonathan: on the macro level, we are hearing world leaders spout some of the same criticism, anti-israeli criticism. turkish president erdogan accusing israel of -- it goes to world leaders. >> yes, i think certainly in terms of international left, if
1:26 am
you like and on the western left, we have heard from prominent academics and left wing politicians who in opposition for sympathy for palestinian and palestinian corp is unable to recognize or explicitly condemn hamas for shocking actses of violence and confuse desire to support palestinians with supporting hamas and i think it is possible to support palestinian core and speak up for the palestinians, while making clear hamas is a terrorist organization shown itself to be unwilling of any kind of support. >> jonathan: that's a very good point, indeed, professor. just briefly on the politics here in israel, you study it closely, i wonder how you see
1:27 am
the future going for prime minister netanyahu. he's a war-time leader obviously. israel was united behind him sending the troops in, but beginning to hear criticism of intelligence failures and his approach getting hostages back, how do you see that playing out in coming weeks and months? >> i think he at the moment has lost all support domestically and he's deeply unpopular. he was unpopular because of his justice's judicial overhaul. for the events of october 7 and refusal to accept any responsibility. he's deeply unpopular among israelis. i think it is hard to rebuild domestic support. he hopes by demonstrating his ability to be a war-time leader somehow he will be able to save
1:28 am
his political career. i don't think that will happen. i think his legacy will be forever tarnished by what happened on october 7. >> jonathan: professor dov waxman, thank you for being with us. 5:30 monday morning here in israel. we will be right back with more live coverage of israel at war.

greg palkot has more from israel's northern border. >> greg: hezbollah and related groups have been active. we heard sirens coming from a town near us. a missile hit a residential building there and started a fire, we are told there is no injuries. that town is one of many that has been evacuated. not everyone has left issue but appears these residents did. 16 missiles were fired from lebanon this night in a barrage. missiles are landing near military bases, uptick in action possibly triggered by escalating ground action in gaza. following missile fire long and sustained artillery blast toward

quickly apologizing for putting the responsibility on shinbet, etcetera. there has to be accounting for egregious accounting of one of the strongest intelligence services in the world. >> you are absolutely right with regard to that. the question ends up being, is now the right time to point fingers or is it time to acknowledge a mistake happened. find out where intelligence failure was and go from there and look back to where the actual failures rely on. it is we're in a mess right now, but there is something we can do about this. we can thread the needle on this. i'm running for congress in north carolina as a former intelligence officer on platform of send intelligence to d.c.,
1:43 am
our policy in the united states is so weak invited global instability. as an example, in the past few weeks iran attacked american forces 16 times and we have had an arguably weak response to that and biden administration continues to give them money and allow them to sell oil on the black market against sanctions. these are steps we can take to help reign in instability in the middle east. >> jonathan: what do you think of the positions of u.s. assets in the region? we've seen these attacks across the middle east and have maps of the posture we've taken here. do we have enough assets here, talk about the military side not political, are we strong enough in the region, matt? >> i would say we're getting

there, we have two carrier strike groups in the eastern mediterranean issue sends strong message to iranians and hezbollah. seems to be the reasons for bringing to the eastern area in case they try to send 150,000 rockets from lebanon to israel, perhaps the americans could intercept that. there is a lot of activity to protect our force, it is force protection at this point. you need to send the signal this is not anyone else's fight and to dissuade any other actors from getting involved. not sure the political side is there, the military side is
1:45 am
positioned well at this point. >> jonathan: interesting inform this, as you mentioned earlier, all roads lead back to iran. whether or not iran had direct involvement in the attack of october 7, hamas would not exist if not for iran's backing, hezbollah would not exist. what do you do about iran? seems there is little you can do without spark ing confill gragz. how do you get iran's influence out of the groups and out of the middle east? >> that's a great question. let's remember the russians are backing iran. iran over russian invasion of ukraine has been providing drones and ammunition to the russians. russia and iran are rich because
1:46 am
of high oil prices, this is called their center of gravity. if you take away their money, key component toward weakening them and china requires different strategy since the chinese are trying to get involved, as well. there are military alliances and economic, as well. tackle the situation by getting other countries to lose influence in the region through the economic side of things. >> jonathan: matt, briefly, with your background, you know the capabilities of the idf well. are you confident the israeli defense forces will win this war, however long it takes them to do so? >> actually worked with the idf when i was part of central

command and they are very capable in this. accusations of genocide, i have not seen too much evidence with regard to that, these are individuals and from my experience, they are laser on cussed on finding targets and taking out military targets. they have no interest, i am confident they will fix this situation best they can. >> jonathan: matt shoemaker. thank you. continuing coverage from israel goes on after a short break.

minister. look at the political future of israel in the wake of this terrible war. for the moment, the present, i've never seen this country in 21 years of coming here as united as it is now. >> i think that is true, we had the worst year going into this war where israelis were divided and hated each other and there were groups, baseless patread, anger and disrespect. we saw worst in israelis before october 7, we are seeing the best in people in every group getting together, working together, putting aside differences and from a civilian level, everyone working together to support each other, people fighting and families, if you go to a hotel where there are people staying who have been
1:53 am
refugees from the south and north, people are bringing clothes, food, bringing kids to play. my teens go to play with the kids and try to calm them down. people are united behind us. >> jonathan: a lot of people who are supporters of a two-state solution say we have to get there in the end. this is not the time for that talk. we have to deal with this. that is completely changed the dynamic in that sense. >> correct, as israelis and jews, as bad as things are, it leads to something good and in the end, something positive will happen. it is too early to talk about a political maneuvering or geopolitics in the region, we are in the event and fighting for survival in the north and south. >> jonathan: there is time and
1:54 am
place to talk about domestic politics, but i have gotten the sense that while the country is united in fighting hamas, there is beginning, basketballing of di discontent with leadership and intelligence failures that were horrible on october 7 and political leadership from prime minister netanyahu since then. how do you think this plays out over the coming months? >> israelis want to complete what has to be done. we're talking about victory, we are trying to protect israelis and the fact of the matter, israelis are focusing on winning or protecting israelis and going to deal with political fall out after. it doesn't help when the government said we have to do this and send out tweet
1:55 am
criticizing the army and other people. he keeps digging in deeper and ep dooer. >> jonathan: he said there is time to talk about intelligence failures and he talked about the failures. he is doing it on his time, the war will never finish, this war could go on weeks or months or longer. a lot of israelis don't feel they have leadership, there is not wide ranging unity government, there is one party brought in, other parties were not brought in. this is bubbling up and getting worse and worse, because israelis don't feel there is a plan and there is someone uniting people. a lot of political appointments have gone to loyalists and not to people that show confidence or relevance in what is going
1:56 am
on. >> jonathan: israel wins this war ultimately? >> we have no choice, it is not only the worst day since the holocaust, but worst day in 2000 years when roman empire destroyed our temple and took thousands of jews captive to be slaves. there is arch of titus, we have gotten through and will stronger as society and people and certainly will get our political act in order by electing real leadership that really cares about the people and moving the country forward. >> jonathan: thank you. that concludes our coverage for the moment of the ongoing war between israel and hamas after a weekend in which israel has s significantly stepped up strikes in gaza. 450 airstrikes targeting hamas
