instagram. she and her friends begin having awful experiences. including repeated unwanted sexual advances. she reported this incidence to the company and it did nothing. they are deciding time and time again to not tackle these issues.>> so, even the daughter of a meta executive isn't safe from the perps that are currently answering for young girls. arturo behar was facebook's director of engineering and says he went to the very top including to the head of instagram and he raised a red flag about all these dangers but, they didn't really do anything about it. so now he's blowing the whistle. arturo joins me now. arturo, it's good to see you tonight.thank you for joining us. explain what sort of impact instagram and facebook was having on kids and what happened when he brought that information to the executives? >> what i've seen as apparent

is just the expenses they have. my daughter came to me and she was told to get back to the kitchen when she was 14. comments about her body and messages she didn't want to receive. you hope when that happens that she's able to turn to the platform and get some help. she turned and they wouldn't help her. the issue she was happy were not things they could help with. we talked about it. i began working on understanding why are they not doing this because you see your kids on these phones and you see how their faces change while they're using them. i wanted to know why they weren't doing the work that is right by her teens. >> you were written about back in 2014 the new york times. i think they referenced you as mr. nice. you were in charge of that part

that then called facebook. that would regulate or try to encourage people to be nice to one another. to play devils advocate here. as of this all up to the marketplace for people to determine how to be nice or regulate their own conduct? you knew things were pretty gnarly back then, did you not? >> yeah, it was not about being nice. what the work was about 10 years ago was about knowing 13-year-old doesn't want to use the report button. 13-year-old is not ready for the stuff that is happening to them. most of the work was about that and it's about the paper set of come out this week. giving a 13-year-old a tool that works for them where it doesn't matter what the content is. the thing that matters here is a kid knows when they are being harassed. right? no question about the content. they should be able to tell the platform, can you please help me and that help should be helpful for them.

that's was not happening. >> why not do that? it's not that difficult to institute this policy or certainly write it into the code. why not? >> that exactly the question. i think someone needs to ask them. that's when i asked. i went to the top, mark zuckerberg, sheryl sandberg, people with whom i had worked closely with for 6 years on these issues. the question for them was, how many teens should experience and don't want the sexual advantage. what should the number be? they never answer the question? >> response that testimony, a spokesperson told the every date and countless are working on how to keep young people safe online. issues raised here had led us to great features like anonymous notifications, for pertinent hurtful warnings. all this work continues.

basically they seem to be saying this is a work in progress and what do you say to that? >> that is very misleading. this is a simple thing. this is a company where everything is run by metrics. everything has a number. they should be able to say that the percentage of teens that don't want the sexual advantage in the last 7 days was this much. this is what were doing to help with that. it's that simple. there people working on features but, unless that one kid the last 7 days goes down then nothing changes. that's why i'm speaking out. >> arturo, i read somewhere you've made yourself instantly unemployable in the tech industry. i think i tweeted ironically, back that that's courage. i don't know if you could be hired by anyone else at this point after you said what you said. do you have any thoughts on that? >> i'm a parent.

and an engineer and other backgrounds. above all i am a parent. what's happening here is kids are getting these things and it doesn't matter what the content is. what matters is it's distressing to them. i am deeply believe in freedom of expression and what i'm talking about here is giving a kid a button that says please help me. that's how you can find the perps. this is not difficult to build. >> arturo, what you just said essentially is it was worth it. if you never get hired again and in the tech industry. >> absolutely. this week has been incredible. to see bipartisan support. every senator in the committee was trying to outdo each other in terms of, we understand this is important.
