non-combatants and civilian populations especially the children? the amount of international pressure on the israeli government while the israelis have present in mind the atrocities committed on october 7th. it's as complicated tactical situation as you could possibly imagine. >> sandra: you have an escalating situation with the troops raiding the homes of hamas leaders there. in the ritzy neighborhood of gaza. the mansions. another hospital video. this is a critical moment. former secretary of state mike pompeo penned the op-ed, colonel, on foxnews.com and there now. israel defeating hamas aids arab states. even if they are afraid to admit it. defeating hamas would send a message to the world that we will not tolerate anti-semitic terrorist organizations dedicated to the complete elimination of all jews and israel on every level. for palestinians and israelis,
8:08 am
for the broader middle east, for the security of all americans and for the entire world. backing israel fully so that it can eliminate hamas is good for everyone. is that message being heard by all considering what we're still seeing as far as protests on the ground here in the united states? >> it's being heard but not being incorporated or acknowledged by those still marching in protest in favor of the palestinian cause. especially this river to the sea nonsense which means the obliteration of israel as a state. the earlier point about arab countries actually enjoying or supporting or wanting to see hamas destroyed is absolutely on the mark. we've seen this replicated or repeated in earlier instances. hamas, ties to the muslim brotherhood in egypt and wanting to see all arab leaders eliminated in a the congratulateic state with sunni

trappings similar to iran is what the muslim brotherhood and hamas is wanting to look at. if you are in egypt, saudi arabia, any of the iranian peninsula in that area you want to see israel win but you can't say that publicly because popular sentiment is siding with the palestinians, anti-jew and anti-israel in its manifestation. so this is a really careful line that arab states are marching. israel knows this but again this popular narrative, propaganda that they have to account for as well. >> sandra: now this. president biden says the u.s./beijing relationship took positive steps after the meeting with president xi last week. not long after that, he called the chinese leader a dictator for the second time. this comment coming hours after the carefully choreographed minty. the double down got dramatic

>> sandra: no birthday gift for president biden with his poll numbers. the "new york post" cover, birthday blues, trump takes lead in new poll as joe turns 81 today. "wall street journal" headline reads biden keeps talking about the old days. young voters don't like it. the numbers bear it out. majority of young voters disapprove of the president's performance listing the economy and his age as the top reasons for those feelings. if that's not bad enough, for the first time in nbc polling, former president trump beats biden in a head-to-head match-up. former senior advisor to

president obama axelrod has been calling out the president's age as a big problem. he says i think he has a 50/50 shot here. he thinks he can cheat nature and it is really risky. karl rove with his take. >> this is not just about the issues, this is about the persona. majority of americans think he lacks the stamina and mental acuity. people look at his performance in office through the performance of him as an individual and they see him as weak, too old, and lacking what it takes to be a strong, effective leader in the oval office. >> sandra: "washington post" with a headline biden campaign works to ease democratic anxiety over re-election chances. democratic donor tells the outlet the bad news is that everybody is wetting the bed inside the biden world. it's an unhappy confluence of
8:19 am
biden world donors, cocktail party friends saying can't you get him not to run? it's stupid and absurd if you know joe biden. bill maher echoing that. >> do i think joe biden can do the job? absolutely. i don't think he can win the job. that's what i care about. he is going to lose because the people think he is too old. perception is reality, i'm sorry. >> sandra: power panel marie harf and david avella co-pac chairman. marie, about that, perception is reality. a lot of folks are saying he is not cut out for the job and age is a top concern of a lot of voters. >> well, elections are not won at cocktail parties and they aren't won in polls a year out from the actual national election. i think that joe biden and his team have to get out and do a better job of making the case why he should have a second term. talk about the record achievements in the first term. i think that elections are
8:20 am
choices, sandra. if the choice is an older joe biden who has all of these accomplishment, whats a really good agenda for the second term versus donald trump, which is what i would put my money on right now, i think that democrats would take that bet any day of the week. donald trump is facing dozens of criminal indictments, very well could be in the midst of a number of criminal trials when the election happens. >> sandra: the biden team have tried to push out his achievements. the american voting public hasn't perceived them as achievements or something benefiting their life. if the economy is the number one issue and you still have the president underwater in polling on this issue, people aren't optimistic about the future, concerned about their finances. they aren't better off today when the president took office. is that going to work and get them where they need to be? >> there is a reason why president biden has the second lowest approval rating of any united states president. and you look at the deep dive
8:21 am
numbers, it is because many in the traditional democratic coalition don't like the progressive push going on within the democratic party and why you continue to see republicans improve with hispanic voters, why you continue to see republicans improve with african-american voter. as joe biden continues to try to push a progressive agenda to keep in line with the big city union bosses and the big city party bosses that run the democratic party, you see his numbers continue to go down. it is so interesting the democratic party set up the rules to protect joe biden, not just this time but also in 2020, bernie sanders talked about a rigged process, robert f. kennedy talked about a rigged process and dean phillips talking about a rigged process. it is all set up to keep joe biden to be their nominee despite all the complaints they have. >> sandra: i will let marie respond to that and reference
8:22 am
this "wall street journal" editorial board piece with the scathing headline joe biden turns 81 years old running for re-election in his condition is an act of profound selfishness. i'm imagining there are some who see it that way. are you one of them, marie? >> you know, i'm not, sandra. if you look at the actual facts and every election since 2016, every election where donald trump is the leader of the republican party, democrats have won, overperformed with historical odds in every trend we've seen in politics. every time issues like abortion, streaks emotionist policies are pushed by republicans democrats win. is joe biden one of the oldest candidates in history? yes, donald trump around his same age, yes. those are facts. a lot of us want to see younger people running in these elections. when joe biden is the leader of the democratic party democrats are winning and beating an extremist maga election in every
8:23 am
election in states where it is hard to win. democrats again will take their chances on those numbers. >> sandra: that is not stopping some within his party from taking a shot at him. senator joe manchin as questions swirl about him taking over a third party presidential run. >> joe biden has been pulled so far to the extreme left as far as liberal makes no sense at all. not the person we thought would bring the country together. so we're in a heck of a mess here and we have got to bring people together. i won't change it from within. i've decided to see if i can mobilize the radical middle. >> sandra: going back to campaigning candidate joe biden, he campaigned on bringing the country together to unifying a very divided country, david. has he been successful at that? does joe manchin have a point? >> no, he has not been successful. it is why he is the second most
8:24 am
unpopular president in u.s. history. and you see now coalitions breaking off. you are now seeing third party candidates talking about running. the case for joe biden was always he was the guy who could beat donald trump. now we see, including the nbc poll this weekend, he is not even beating donald trump anymore. what's the rationale for the biden presidency anymore if it always he would be the person to beat donald trump? as you look at pennsylvania and wisconsin and michigan and arizona, the states that will control this election ultimately who will be the nominee, it is in those that the president sees some of his worst approval rating numbers on issues people care about, whether inflation, personal security. all those are areas that traditional democrat ig voters, hispanic or african-american voters give biden terrible ratings. it is a great opening for republicans to expand the coalition. >> sandra: very interesting.
8:25 am
as far as low marks, we mentioned the economy's overall approval rating. biden is getting low marks on his handling of the israel/hamas war. more than half of all voters and 70% of voters age 18-34 disapprove of his response. marie. >> look, we are a polarized country. every election will be 50/50 now. polls demonstrate that every day. a lot of people will never support what joe biden is doing. a lot of people will never support what donald trump was doing. david is right. there are a handful of states with a couple thousand voters where this election will be determined. the democrats need to make sure their coalition is in line and talking to black and hispanic voters and suburban women voters. we need to make the case. i think we can and i think joe biden can do it again. who can't do that is donald trump. donald trump with his divisive xenophobic rhetoric has gotten
8:26 am
worse since 2016 and 2020 and don't think he can bring the voters back to the republican party. if you look at a nikki haley as a candidate, that's a different story. >> joe biden is in big trouble, democrats know it. they have no other alternative. here we go. >> sandra: here we go. great to have you both to begin this holiday week. anti-israel protestors shutting down part of california's democratic party convention. [crowd chanting] >> sandra: we know the college campuses are facing the same problem. some trying to crack down on anti-semitism but facing backlash for it. plus u.s. and israeli officials say there may be hope for the hostages held by hamas. >> if we are closer, and i hope we are, it is because of the military pressure on hamas. as a result, we believe the probability that they will agree

college's culture of intolerance, conformity and safe spaces. alexis mcadams is live at columbia university in new york city where they are dealing with this for sure as well. >> after weeks of protests on college campuses across the country including new york city at columbia university, they've made move now to kick at least two pro palestinian groups off campus saying they were using hate speech and making jewish students feel unsafe. students that we've been talking to here say it's not fair. they have the right to speak up and protest and show support for palestine and want the groups back on campus. >> i think it was entirely unjustified. i don't know why we support some voices an not others. >> as long as people aren't promoting hate speech it is wrong to curb any sort of freedom of speech. >> for weeks those protests erupted on campuses across the

country from large marches at nyu to physical fights at tulane and class walk-outs at harvard. a lot of action. pro-palestinian students part of the students for justice in palestine the group suspended from campus calling on that group to be reinstated. this comes after the rallies continued and groups displayed anti-semitic messages on campus buildings. jewish students filed lawsuits and safety complaints. 20 elected officials from new york including congressman alexandria ocasio-cortez demanding that columbia university reverse the suspension of these groups saying it is not making campuses safer writing that banning the groups aligns with the dangerous narrative that those who express empathy for the lives and dignity of palestinians or speak up about the historical context of this israeli occupation are anti-semitic and dangerous. [shouting]
8:35 am
>> those chants erupted at the university of michigan. around 200 pro-palestinian protestors forced their way into an administration building in ann arbor and spilled to the streets of major cities like here in new york where thousands marched through manhattan this weekend demanding a cease-fire blaming president biden for funding israel in a genocide in gaza. >> they gave the green light for the israeli military to go in and raid and shoot and search and put under siege. he is complicit and orchestrating it and not what the people of the united states want. >> more protests are planned across the city including columbia here today. >> sandra: live here in new york city. earlier this month president herzog wrote a letter to the presidents of american universities urging them to fight this rise in anti-semitism happening on campuses.

excerpt reads at stake is whether the enlightened world will defend the basic norms of humanity or choose to accept and even support the violation. it will either be a teaching moment that moves us toward constructive action or a moment of irreversible decline. your choices will now shape history and be remembered. president herzog joins us now. welcome to the program. which moment is this? >> thank you, sandra. >> sandra: thank you for being here. >> a deciding moment in the fate of world affairs. we're faced between a coalition of hate, coalition of i call it darkness, which is a jihadist coalition that emanates from tehran with its proxies in lebanon and gaza by hamas, and in yemen houthis and spreading islamic fundamentalist jihadism all over the world that wants to rerace all of us.
8:37 am
if israel wasn't there, europe will be next and the united states for sure next because they call the united states the big satan. that is why i think those protestors who are supporting hamas, they are actually accomplices to the whole notion that you can butcher young children, that you can chop heads of women, that you can rape women and pregnant women, that you can abduct old age holocaust survivors and do a whole bunch of atrocities because you basically support hamas. that's what they've done. i'm just finished. i just finished a very moving meeting with family members of over 40 children who are under captivity as hostages in gaza by hamas. children from ten months old. that's what these protestors are supporting. none of them, today is international children's day, i repeat today is international
8:38 am
children's day. where are all those protestors? do they demand the immediate release of these children? let alone the entire group of hostages? all those who have gone through the treacherous, horrendous barbaric attack on october 7th? >> sandra: you mentioned the hostages and this deal we're starting to learn more details about. biden officials say this deal is closer than it has been at any other point including negotiations with the u.s., israel and qatary officials. dozens of hostages could be freed of the 240 in coming days. what more can you tell us about that right now? >> not much, really. we are all waiting and dealing on the opposite side with the leadership of hamas, led by a psychopath in the way he operates. so nothing that you and i can say really changes the picture. we are all awaiting for what is
8:39 am
the basic humanitarian deed which is releasing the children and the women and, of course, all the rest of the hostages. we have now learned about two hostages that were murdered -- murdered in gaza. we reported about it in the last few days. but focused also on the entire picture let me point out to you another horrendous development of the last day or two and perhaps again in the very near future. so this coalition of hate includes a partner in yemen called the houthis. the houthi militias announced for the first time in history since medieval times that they are going to act as pirates on take hostage a ship. they have taken a japanese ship hostage which they suspected was
8:40 am
an isly ship. a ship that was taking goods from turkey to india and they announced formally they are now pirates. they announced again they plan to take another ship in a pirate way. do you believe in modern times we see piracy again in the high seas? where is the international community? they have to put a stop to it. this is truly under the clear instructions of iran. iran gives instructions to the houthis and gives them the instructions and information and the details about how to operate in the high seas. this is the battle we're in. the united states is firm, both sides of the aisle, together with us and many other nations in fighting this coalition of evil. >> sandra: speaking of the international community to this day the u.s. still hasn't condemned hamas. why is that? >> because the u.n. is a
8:41 am
hypocritical organization where they are playing for many, many years with anti-semitic language and rhetoric going on every year. resolutions against israel. some forgot they passed but they pass every year. it's kind of an automatic majority. rather than saying the truth because we all know the truth. there is mileage of footage showing the barbarism and sadism and i've seen this footage. i've seen this footage. it's amazing. it is so at rocheous how thousands in gaza cheer. the whole clash of civilizations of values that we're in. >> sandra: i want to talk about the ground operations in gaza as israel is expanding these operations in northern gaza. u.s. officials say they are
8:42 am
concerned about potential operations in southern gaza. thousands of civilians as we know have fled there, mr. president. from the north under evacuation orders. deputy national security advisor said this. >> there is a real concern because hundreds of thousands of residents of gaza have fled now from the north to the south at israel's request. and we think their operations should not go forward until those people, those additional civilians have been accounted for. >> sandra: to that you say what, mr. president? >> that indeed as mr. finer said they are accounted for meaning there is a whole infrastructure down south which accommodates civilians who have left the northern part because it's a war zone and because the entire terror infrastructure is in their homes. we find now in schools huge amount of missiles and grenades
8:43 am
and bombs and mortars and what is not in schools, we find it, of course, in the hospitals. we showed the world yesterday how the abduction and kidnapping was taking place in hospitals. we have been claiming this for years. that's what you see above ground. underneath it is a huge terror city, huge. you talk about tunnels that can carry cars and jeeps and so forth and so on. billions of dollars being invested there by some taxpayers money from western countries who wanted to help the gazan people legitimately. we all were in favor of it. the money was laundered and taken for the use of terror. we are uprooting a major terror infrastructure threatening the entire middle east. we have to build now the future of how it will look like afterwards so that there will be hope for the people of gaza so
8:44 am
that they will be able to live in peace in democratic circumstances. >> sandra: we have a photo of what you say are hamas terrorists using children as shields as they fight israeli troops. can you tell us about this? and where you see this happening, how often this is happening? >> it's actually happening for years unfortunately. now in the battleground at times what they have done, they carry their operations from living rooms and children's bedrooms, from mosques and shops. when the world says to us you have the right to self-defense, the american administration correctly says the duty for self-defense meaning defending our people, the problem is that the enemy operates from civilian premises and as such we found --
8:45 am
i exposed a week ago adolph hitler's book, mein kampf, the book that was the starter for the horrific events of world war ii and the holocaust, which is the worst genocide in human history of jews. that was of jews. mein kampf was found in a living room, which was used as a war operating room by hamas against israeli civilians. from there they launched missiles. does any american citizen have a missile in his bedroom, living room or garden. does any american or decent person in the world take children after chopping their parents and take them into this center somewhere and tortures them? this is what we're going through. this is a battle between evil and good, period. >> sandra: i have to leave it there, mr. president. if i could just leave off where we began, are you optimistic on
8:46 am
the hostages? >> we are praying. we are doing our best to bring them back home. we are demanding. we are calling upon the international community to be as forceful as possible, also to point out to iran and, of course, all the brokers that are dealing with this, and demand the immediate release of all the hostages. definitely the women and children, and we hope and pray that there will be a positive outcome in the next few days. >> sandra: president herzog, we appreciate you joining us today. thank you very much. >> thank you very much, sandra. >> sandra: fears of flight mares as airports ahead as a travel weekend. a new report raising the faa is being asked to do more with less. we'll be right back.
