again this time around. mark meredith is live in washington with more on this news. hi, mark. >> good morning to you. florida governor ron desantis is betting big on iowa. a first place finish there or a close contest with former president trump could change the 2024 race and last night right here on fox desantis got a big boost after one of iowa's most influential evangelical leaders endorsed the governor and told bret baier why. >> last friday's thanksgiving family forum he closed the sale for me. he was very clear we need a president who can serve two terms, not one term. we don't need a president who will be a lame duck on day one. >> governor desantis pushes a similar message on the campaign trail and won the endorsement of governor kim reynolds and his campaign celebrating the endorsement. he wrote we're thrilled to have them on our team and thankful for their support. the road to america's revival

worry about the primaries. president biden's bid to stay in the white house is facing new hurdles as the white house struggles to spin the lowest approval rating of his presidency. the green line is not looking good for him. this op-ed argues it's not about the messaging of his campaign. the problem is the fundamental democratic offering. let's bring in clifford young, and mark penn former clinton pollster. i'm in hog heaven. today i get to discuss polls with actual pollsters. fabulous. mark, let me start with you. one thought among supporters of the president is that the biden campaign seems to -- all it needs to do is better articulate the accomplishments of this president over the past couple years. but then there is another school of thought that i think david axelrod might be counted among this group that voters look at the president and they look at somebody who is well past his best before date and then look at his running mate and they
7:22 am
don't like the running mate too much. what do you say? >> look, i've said for months now the president's numbers have been low. it is very hard to get reelected with a 40% job approval. you need at least 45. it is about the economy, inflation, crime, immigration. it's about doing things about these problems just as when i worked with president clinton, we had an agenda for the future. i haven't heard one. we did things about the problems on a massive scale. and he has a year left to do it but it is not about communications. it is about problems. as i say, when your age is twice as good as your job approval you are in trouble. >> john: he just mentioned it is difficult to get reelected if your approval is below 45. let's flashback to 1967, this time the 21st of november of 1967, lyndon johnson's approval

rating was 42%, disapproval rating 46%. didn't look like it would get better. the end of march of the next year he said i'm not running for re-election. you have to wonder when you look at his numbers, is biden thinking about the same thing? >> i don't think it is good for democrats and what we do know, the other thing we know that's clear is a successor has a much less or lower chance of winning than an incumbent. incumbents are important in an election. i would say that 42/40 is not that low if you look at it in global context. our own data shows that approval rating of 40% gives the sitting president a 50/50 chance of winning the next election. what he has to do is weather the head winds. they're strong and specifically and primarily inflation. it's cut negatively are young

voters, with black voters, hispanic voters. he has to weather that for now. >> john: "the new york times" did a focus group recently where it wrote about and what it found talking to folks in this focus group. the themes that emerged from our talk provide a warning for the party. for more than an hour the participants considered its future and the people who might lead them into it. mr. biden's name didn't come up once until we asked about him. that was more than 75 minutes into the conversation. if the president is not even in the conversation with young voters, where does that leave him? >> well, you know, if i look at the nbc poll that created the ruckus, if you look at the democratic primary he gets 77% of democrats saying they want him to be the democratic nominee. so we can talk about his low ratings but within the democratic party, they have said
7:25 am
biden is it and doesn't look like he will do a lyndon johnson at all. he either has to improve his numbers or lose or project the other candidate as a goldwater, johnson may have pulled out of one race but there are a couple of strategies here that president biden can deploy. getting out doesn't look like it will be one of them. >> john: you mentioned a large number of democrats would vote for him. then there was this one woman, her name is yvonne, 60 years old "the new york times" talked to who said this, clifford. his age is showing a lot. he is not strong. we need someone stronger. we need someone to defeat the other side. unfortunately if it's trump, especially. unfortunately i like the man, biden, but i think his time is done. the problem for the democratic
7:26 am
party is if biden's time is done they are running out of time to put up a candidate to primary him. there are a number of deadlines that have already passed so if they will change horses they will have to do it midstream at the convention. >> even if they change horses, that's a risk, right? successor running has less of a chance. i would say the following. our polling and the polling out there suggests that biden is seen as older, having less energy. but trump is not far behind as well. elections are about choices. >> john: age is a number. an 81-year-old can be like a 60-year-old or they can be like a 95-year-old. >> elections are choices. deciding who you vote for you will consider those things. age will cancel itself out when the other issues come to the fore and other people think about them.
