drafting of the lists and determination on hamas's side who is going to come out on any given day. >> sandra: mark, do we expect the president to comment on israel in the remarks he's about to make? >> i would imagine he has a small amount of new information on the latest extension of the pause in fighting between israel and hamas. the event is tied to the economy but he's been known to at least weigh in on latest developments. also heard from white house officials on the latest possibility that this continuation of this pause and hostilities could actually benefit hamas. we heard from john kirby at the afternoon's press briefing. >> it's a real risk. you have to expect a group like hamas, a terrorist group, clearly does not abide by laws of war would take advantage for their own benefit. >> he spoke to the israeli prime

minister on sunday and the white house plans to have more conversations with the israelis. the president is thankful abigail was released, a dual israeli-american citizen. here at home, the debate shifts to if and how to help israel with taxpayer dollars to combat hamas. the "washington post" reporting there are divisions right here at the white house. the post writing the division inside the white house is to some degree between biden senior long time aides and array of younger staffers of diverse backgrounds. even top advisers recognize the conflict has hurt america's global standing. the white house was asked about the bitter feud inside but did not want to comment. one of the biggest questions going forward, whether or not the white house would support conditions placed on aid to israel, something bernie sanders has been outspoken for, the white house was asked about it

today and still trying to leave some avenues open. the president said it was a worthwhile thought. what the developments are now that congress is coming back to town. >> john: as iranian-backed proxy groups target u.s. troops, united nations watchdog says iran is not fulfilling its commitments of the nuclear deal and has enough material for several nuclear bombs. in moments, we will ask former defense secretary mark esper if we are doing enough to keep iran and proxies in check. but first, let's get to gillian turner, live from the state department. gillian, allegations, reports that iran is cheating, perish the thought. >> it's hard to believe, john. secretary of state tony blinken departed for europe earlier this morning, he's going to pow wow with the nato allies tomorrow in brussels. the trip had already been scheduled but now a crucial moment. as you mentioned, iran is once again violating the terms of the

>> john: including the latest one looked like it was aimed toward the u.s.s. mason in the gulf of aden. >> sandra: the looming threat grows after houthi forces fire at a navy warship. troops aboard the u.s.s. mason was targeted after they responded to pirates in the area. mark esper is joining us. thank you mr. secretary for joining us. what does all of this tell you and are we responding forcefully enough? what needs to be done? >> good afternoon, sandra. another example of iranian proxies misbehaving in the middle east. we know that over 70 attacks have been connected against u.s. forces over the past 6, 7 weeks, in iraq and syria, over 60 americans have been injured, everything from shrapnel wounds to traumatic brain injury and it's conducted by the syrians,
11:08 am
iraqi, shia militia, and the houthis, and all goes back to iran. i've been saying we have to deal with iran and the latest report gillian had with regard to iran and iaea is prove positive it's not working. we need to confront iran with bad behavior in the region and also nuclear program. >> sandra: a couple new live pictures, one is a live shot, hard to make out anything here, but i still want to pop it up. we have been watching this bus that just deployed red cross workers, we are told, in the evening there, to the palestinian prison, palestinian prisoners are being held. we have not seen any of those palestinian prisoners released, that could be happening any moment now. but this is a live shot of that. i'll get your thoughts on that as we await any update from the president. he's about to begin speaking on

something completely different but could make remarks on the ongoing hostage efforts, also this, mr. secretary. these are brand-new photos just in to us, we can pop them up on the screen. this is the u.s.s. eisenhower carrier strike group in the persian gulf. again, just in to us, and the commander of that carrier strike group has issued this note. our passage through this important strait and continued presence in the area plays a critical role in maintaining the freedom of navigation, that is key to regional security and stability. your thoughts on these brand-new pictures we are now seeing and what it means for the escalation in the region. >> i give the biden administration credit for deploying the strike vessels and others in the middle east. america backing up its diplomacy and ally israel.
11:10 am
but the fact we have not sufficiently responded, whether forcefully enough or frequently enough to iranian proxy attacks erodes that deterrent effect. that runs against us, hurts against us. and look, we now have -- we have the houthis in yemen trying to seize more ships. just a week ago they took an israeli merchant vessel and of course, the iranians has been doing it for years in the persian gulf. when i was in office we set up a program called the sentinel program in the persian gulf. more from the iranian playbook. >> sandra: john kirby from the briefing at the white house. >> i don't think we are in the business of telegraphing our punches, we have responded forcefully, against the threats to our forces in iraq and syria and now our forces in the gulf region, i would add that the mason is attached to the u.s.s.
11:11 am
eisenhower carrier strike group, specifically to address the increase in the tensions. >> sandra: won't telegraph exactly how they are going to strike back next but this is mike pompeo talking about the iran proxies and how the discussion is how far we should go in responding to these attacks. but he makes the case even if we are more aggressive going after iran's proxies, that will not be enough, mr. secretary. listen here. >> if we are going to protect american soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and the homeland by hezbollah cells in south america or the united states, you cannot just go after their proxies. the fact there are hamas fighters dying while the iranians are in tehran laughing is what the ayatollah had hoped for. >> sandra: as mr. secretary has now been 73 attacks on u.s. bases, on u.s. military forces in the region.
11:12 am
what do you want to see happen next? >> clearly administration response has been insufficient. they have attacked us 70 plus times. we have responded 4 or 5 or 6 times. my view is every time they strike us, we should respond back more forcefully. i remember in december 2019 when shi'ite militia groups killed an american, we struck multiple sites in iraq and syria, killed over 20 some militiamen, injured twice as many as that and attacks died down for a while. that's the metric. when you see the proxy attacks stop, you'll know you have achieved deterrence. the fact the houthis shot two ballistic missiles at an american destroyer and we did nothing. it's another case we are not responding sufficientlily to the iranian proxy attacks. >> sandra: see what the president has to say to this, he is about to begin speaking, we have the live shot where the president is expected to speak

on supply chain efforts, but likely he could make some remarks at the top. appreciate your time. >> john: more ahead as well as john kirby, the nsc spokesman will join martha at 3 o'clock. when daniel hagari was saying. >> our suit to bring back all hostages, not sit around and wait for their release. rescue these hostages at all costs. why we fight, john. we hope we get an update in the next few moments. he was short with the questions he took there, but john kirby could offer some more information on what we are learning when he comes on the network next hour as well. >> john: the news of the day is that israel agrees to extend the

>> sandra: idf giving an update moments ago after israel and hamas agreed to extend a temporary truce by another two days, saying they will rescue all hostages at all costs. we have complete coverage, and danny danon and whether he supports a pause in fighting, what is the latest on the extension of the truce? what are we hearing? >> two big things happening. latest group of israeli hostages hopefully getting out today, but two more days of a temporary ceasefire as israel and hamas agree to continue exchanging and swapping israeli hostages for palestinian prisoners. these last couple days have not been without incident or delays and remind the viewers the israeli government has long said that nothing is actually guaranteed until it happens.
11:20 am
however, qatari officials taking it seriously, flying to israel over the weekend to continue the ongoing negotiations. israel had previously said that they would continue one day of a pause in the fighting for every ten israeli hostages released. but keep in mind, the idf has also said that they will pledge to continue the military campaign to root out hamas. so, if hamas stops releasing hostages, it should be no surprise israeli forces continue the military campaign in and around northern gaza. as it stands, 11 more israeli hostages are making their way back to israel right now just the day before 14 israelis had the same journey where they now join 26 other israelis released in previous days. they are in some sort of treatment after spending roughly se seven weeks likely exclusively in the darkness of the hamas tunnels. there are well more than 100

egypt to extend a pause over 48 hours. he said he would like to see the pause go on as long as hostages are being released. are there concerns that given the number of hostages that hamas still holds that, could go on almost indefinitely? >> so, john, make no mistake, will continue forever, we are determined to continue with the war until the full eradication of hamas. we have babies in captivity 50 days 10-month-old baby, and eradication of hamas, i don't think it will continue for much longer but if we can bring more people home we will wait, we will continue with the pause, but i estimate within two days or maybe four days ahead of us we will resume the war efforts
11:23 am
and terrorists will feel the might of the idf in action. >> john: what the prime minister benjamin netanyahu said about that, he said at the end of the deal, we are returning full power to carry out our aims, destroy hamas, ensure gaza will not return to what it was and to free our hostages. i am sure we will succeed in this mission because we have no other choice. in the meantime, though, the longer the ceasefire goes on, and now extended for two days, the more international pressure will be brought to bear, but keep the ceasefire going. the more hamas will use whatever public relations tools it can to try to keep it going. how does israel say with more than 150 hostages still left to be released we are getting back to the fighting? >> with all due respect to the international pressure, we are fighting for our lives. we saw what happened on october 7th, we will never forget it. i'm not worried about the
11:24 am
pressure. but i am worried about the troops because hamas will take advantage of the pause to resupply, to bring ammunition, immediately after the ceasefire will be over so more challenging but i spoke with a few generals today and they told me they are ready, they are ready to wait and also ready to resume the military activities. so we will try to bring as many hostages as we can and resume the war regardless of the international opinion. >> john: i would assume that the israeli defense forces have been keeping a close eye on hamas movements over the last four days. but when it comes to destroying hamas, ambassador, how do you define that? is it removing them as a governing force in gaza and making sure they can never attack israel ever again, or is it eliminating all of the leaders of hamas and those who would take their place if they were eliminated?
11:25 am
>> so it would take much more than the leadership. i have no doubt, we will find the leadership of hamas. we will make sure he is not going to be alive. the same way that saddam hussein was killed and qadaffi was killed by the people of libya, we are going to find him and his colleagues. it's not enough. we need to go and eradicate hamas. when the u.s. followed isis, they followed all the way. you go back to nazi germany, allies had to defeat germany, basically they uprooted the capability of the nazi regime to control germany, and new forces emerge, that's what we expect in gaza. >> john: watching in the hours and days ahead. thanks for joining us, appreciate it. >> thank you, john. >> sandra: vermont man accused
