has surged. that took pressure off ron desantis and he had a better st strategy. everybody was not throwing at him, that changed the dynamic. he wanted to go back to the basics of what made people love him and tell that story and explain it. he fought back and not just thinking, should i say this or that. it was reactional, i wish this guy would be on debate one, two and three. if you are on his campaign, i think you are excited. this shows, okay, we're alive. if you're a donor, you have to be thrilled this happened. this may give him a longer runway to right the ship, it's been messed up for a while. >> kayleigh: nikki haley was fending off a lot of attacks. she was asked about economy, housing, young people not being able to afford it.

a general election. ron desantis had his debate, will it stop his bleeding in the polls and stop don't ors who have fled him to go to her. she talks like she wants to win a general election and not just a primary. a lot of what we heard from ron desantis was designeds to get primary voters and take them from donald trump. nikki haley had been talking about abortion, that is one place she shined most, talking to a general election audience. the big question, donald trump is light years ahead of these folks. nikki haley did a good job in the hot seat. she said, you guys are jealous, you are criticizing me because i'm getting your support. she took a lot of incoming. >> kayleigh: bingo, marie, look at the polls, emily, donald trump 43%, that is nbc, that is iowa. move to the next state, new

hampshire, 42%, commanding lead and south carolina 53%, majority support for trump. >> emily: that is undeniable and what is also undeniable to marie's point, nikki haley position under him in every state. third place that revolves. i thought, if i can give general thoughts about last night, for candidates who say americans deserve better as we discuss policy issues, it is disappointing and unpalatable that we are subjected to what has become behavior as court jester. talk about wisdom versus experience, it is hubris? there has to be a line drawn. his -- i just think behavior is unbecoming of anyone who thinks they should sit in the oval office and we have been subjected to unruly behavior. it is exhausting over and over

again. that underscores that and feets into it. it does not give us refreshing change of events. sooner we can contrast, i think the neoconlabel is one people want nikki haley to have, she is far different from that and two candidates up there, whose policies should be contrasted and compared to nuanced, thoughtful degree is nikki haley and desantis and everything else is noise. sooner they realize that, better for all of us americans trying so hard to make real decisions. >> kayleigh: those two were center stage, where polls have them. first stop is iowa, coming up less than 40 days, i've been to the iowa caucuses. you give a speech on behalf of your candidate, long, arduous p, polls can be meaningless.

boots on the ground work in iowa pays off. >> dagen: it does, ron desantis has a leg up in iowa, but bigger picture nationally the monmouth university poll that came out just yesterday, when asked open-ended question to republican voters, who do you want to see gop nominee for president, more than half said president donald trump, 53%. year ago it was half that. it was 26%. and in a breakdown of candidates, everybody talks about nikki haley is taking off, not really. nikki haley still in third, she's at 12% and that is up from september, 7%. ron desantis is still six points ahead at 18%. donald trump is 40 points ahead of ron desantis at 58 and 46 points ahead of nikki haley. how did they close that gap?
