issues. you know, south carolina is a graveyard of presidential campaigns, that's our tradition and i expect we'll probably see that tradition continue. neil: quickly, your name mentioned on a short list to be the next rnc chair, lara trump the president's daughter-in-law is also mentioned in that group. how do you feel about that? >> look, at the end of the day, the party and the nominee always come together on a leadership team that makes sense. we can do our job, which is go win campaigns, and that's what i want to see happen in november. neil: you'd be okay with lara trump? . again, i want to work together with the nominee, the campaign, the party and everybody to make sure we win in november and doesn't matter who that is as long as we win. neil: all right. thank you for your patience and all of this breaking news, drew mckissick, the chair. and voting is on and so is fox throughout. >> ice and dhs sources telling fox news that the suspect in

the murder of georgia nursing student is a venezuelan national who crossed illegally into el paso, texas in september of 2022 and was released into the united states via parole. the nursing student, laken riley, was on a run on thursday morning and didn't return home for hours prompting a concerned friend to call police. welcome to fox news live, i'm al alicia acuna. griff: the suspect, ibarra, felony murder, false imprisonment and kidnapping. and in georgia with the latest kicking things off. madison, what can you tell us? >> griff, just a devastating time for uga and the entire athens community. and ibarra had his first hearing in court and the judge
9:02 am
denied him bond. he was sitting in court with an attorney and an interpreter. he didn't speak at all, but he did make eye contact with some of the media there and police say ibarra did not know riley and that this murder was a random violent crime. >> the evidence suggests that this was a solo act. we took three or four people in custody, however, we are only going to arrest one in this case. like i said, this was just a crime of opportunity. no motive. >> we also learned from uga police that the nursing student died from blunt force trauma. ibarra is facing a long list of charges, like you guys mentioned, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and hindering a 911 call among other charges. police say there is some strong evidence against the suspected killer and video footage on campus was really vital in catching him, they say. and riley's sister spoke out on
9:03 am
social media calling riley her built in best friend and saying that her death is unfair. a little bit more information we want to give you here. the suspect's older brother was also arrested for possessing a fake green card and that all happened during the investigation of riley's death. guys. griff: madison scarpino live for us in athens. thank you. >> griff, for more on this tragic story, retired fbi is here, and what we've learned about the suspect and while we talk, i want to put up again the list of charges that this man is accused of doing to this young woman, again, your thoughts on the suspect? >> unfortunately, i hate to beat this immigration issue, border issue to death here, but you can draw a direct line between the open borders and this death. we don't know who is coming across the border. you know, this young man didn't

just spontaneously combust into being a criminal overnight. this is someone who has committed crimes before, he's committed crimes in the united states, as a matter of fact. we have no way of vetting people, whether he was a got-away or processed. sound like he was paroled into the country. we can't talk to venezuela, we don't know what his criminal record is in venezuela. i would guarantee that there is one. we're unleashing criminals and terrorists and spies into our country and willy nilly. we don't know who is coming in. >> and again, he crossed illegally in september of 2022 at the el paso borderline and again, released into the united states on parole. earlier this morning tom holliman, the former acting director of ice had to to say, take a listen. >> this young lady suffered a terrible death, a violent death, fighting her her life
9:05 am
and another u.s. citizen family is going to bury their child because of this open border. going through hell because this government failed them. and we've got to save lives and you do that by securing the border. >> you know, chris, it's not difficult to go from had this person not been in this country this promising young woman would in all likelihood still be alive. no doubt about that, tom is spot on. we've opened the borders to-- i'm not saying everybody that comes across the border is a terrible person, but there's a high enough percentage, the risk is so high that it's unacceptable. we're getting gang members from venezuela, we're getting ms-13. i think some countries are actually emptying their prison like castro did in 1980 into the united states and come from lawless places have no respect for the rule of law or police or authorities, and they pretty much do what they please. they live in an underground
9:06 am
society that alone is a criminal act, everything is black market. criminals, spies, terrorists and we just-- it's a self-inflicted wound on this country. >> and we know the president's considers executive action. in your mind, what needs to be included in that in the 30 seconds i have left? >> remove the incentives for people to come here and there are plenty of them. all you've got to do is get across, claim asylum, released, go to court in 10 years and get the benefits in this country. and provide disincentives, deterrents for people to come here. remain in mexico, i'm not being a politician here, i'm being a law enforcement officer, 40 years in this business and an attorney and former prosecutor and telling you, you can't just unleash criminals. we're going to be living with this for decades and decades. remove the incentives. >> create deterrents. >> and this family will be living with this forever.
9:07 am
chris, swecker, thank you for this today. griff: more how students are reacting to this heartbreaking and frightening story, we're joined now by a university of georgia junior, mary, thank you for being here. what has been the reaction to this on campus amongst the students? >> students are just who are t the-- heart broken right now. and a lot of us received news on campus, news there had been a homicide on campus and it's been hard. campus has been eerie and empty and we've all been very scared and staying together and we're sending love and thinking of laken. >> mary, where this happened, the running path near the intramural field and i'm familiar with the campus having a daughter graduating there last year. this is a central part.
9:08 am
tell me, if you will, kind of where this happened. so the lake herrick is a recreational and student-used lake and it has a trail going around it through the oconee forest park and a lot of people walk and hike and run through the trail a lot, and it's very common for girls to go alone. i have friends who did run there weekly, almost daily, and so it's not uncommon to go alone. it's usually safe during the daytime and that's what we assume. this has been jarring for many of us who exercise alone and especially female students. a lot of us feel safe during the daytime and this is a notion that's completely thrown out the window for us. griff: it has and athens being kind of a secure, college town, and to put you on the spot, personally what your mother and father and older brother think,
9:09 am
do you feel safe? do fellow female students feel safe in the wake of this? >> i'm going to be honest and say not really. i mean, my friends they have been sleeping over. they're all going together places. we went to the store together. we're just trying to maintain, i guess, the buddy system now because we thought it was safe during daytime, but i don't feel safe. my mom has ordered me self-defense tools. i thought i was safe because this is a fairly small college town, but you know, that's just been completely changed for us and now we're concerned for each other's well-beings and focused on staying together at all times now. griff: i sure hope that they will increase some security measures. i had seen where some students calling for-- petitioning for more security measures. in the moment i've got left with you. i do want to ask you, you've heard so much about the reporting the last 24 hours that this was an individual that illegally came to the u.s.
9:10 am
through texas and was released. is that -- are students there aware of that? are they talking at all about the fact. >> yes. griff: that he might not had been there had there been a different immigration situation? >> yes, and we're very, very upset that this could have been easily preventible, not only on campus with safety measures, but nationally, this could have been preventible and the fact that people like laken, nursing students going to go out and save lives had to have their lives taken from them, that is just so sad that we had to prove that this is a national safety issue through people like her. griff: mary dodys, junior at university of georgia, thank you for speaking out and all of you there. stay safe, buddy system is a good one, i sound like a father now, make sure where you go is safe and get back to us, if you have any updates on any security measures or details of
9:11 am
what's happening there. mary, thank you. >> thank you, griff. >> all eyes on the palmetto state today as south carolinians head to the polls for south carolina's g.o.p. primary race. this as candidate nikki haley struggles to close the gap with donald trump on her home turf. we have alexandria hoff in columbia. alexandria, we'll kick things off. alex, to you. >> well, thank you. you know, despite minimal spending, minimal times physically spent here in the state, former president trump, i mean, the polls have showed a wide lead from the very beginning, most of them showing between a 26 to 33% lead here. nikki haley's home state. the trump campaign, they're expecting a very large victory here today in the double digits. last night, trump delivered
9:12 am
remarks at the black conservative federation gala in columbia and spoke for about an hour and a half, seldom even mentioning nikki haley. >> we sort of don't even talk about her anymore. it's amazing when you do badly in the polls how you don't mention people, it's an amazing phenomena, but we have a big deal tomorrow and so important for everybody to get out and vote we want to win by big margin because the big day is november 5th. >> today is the day that the trump campaign says they're lifting to the national election and most of the day in the d.c. area, speaking at cpac this afternoon. expected to return back to the state tonight, and yesterday held a get out the vote rally in rock hill. a short time ago, the state's governor, henry mcmaster, he cast his vote for trump and spoke to his popularity here in the state. >> there's something going on between donald trump and the people in this country and it's something i've never seen
9:13 am
be before. >> now, the trump team does expect that with a wide victory tonight that they are expecting that this road ahead is going to be an easy one. they put out a memo earlier this week kind of setting out that pathway and believe by mid march that the former president will have secured enough delegates to secure that nomination officially. guys, send it back to you. >> alexandria hoff kick can kicking things off. griff: and nikki haley putting the rhetoric up, vowing to stay in the race. and a seven figure ad by super tuesday stakes. and we find mark meredith on the ground with the latest. >> griff, good afternoon to you. nikki haley's campaign is urging south carolina voters to simply give mer a chance. the state that elected her governor twice now asking for their chance mere in the
9:14 am
presidential contest and her campaign admits this is going to be an uphill battle today. just a few minutes or so, nikki haley was casting her ballot in kiawah island, a few miles away from charleston, there with her mother having a chance to cast her ballot, a big moment for her and personal pride she talked about afterwards. she's spent the day crisscrossing the state urging republicans to take a much tougher stance against form president trump, someone who, as you know, hale served under. >> donald trump has never been near a uniform. we all know veterans, people who lost their lives in service, it's personal for us. he's never been near a uniform. he's never had to sleep on the ground. the closest he's come to harm's way if is golf ball happens to hit him on the golf course. >> some tough words from nikki haley and her campaign saying they're looking past today's
9:15 am
results and stops planned tomorrow night in michigan and the campaign ad buy and argues there's no reason to talk about dropping out because of the delegate math out there right now. only a small number of delegates awarded so far and the campaign says they still see a path forward for the nomination, but as alex was mentioning, once the super tuesday states vote, we'll see if the numbers change and the pathway could change for haley. i've been shocked to see how many people were here at the elementary to cast their vote to see if maybe it's going to be closer. griff: maybe it's the weather i saw a gentleman out in shorts and short sleeved shirt. >> and griff, i found a golf ball outside of the polling place, people have other things. griff: it is indeed.
9:16 am
sat saturday. let's bring in our political panel we've got today for us. republican state representative from south carolina, brandon duffy, and tamika isaac divine. and start with you, i think that we've seen the poll numbers have former president trump up by quite a large margin, but yet he continues to take shots at his competitor, nikki haley, i want you to listen to a little of what he had to say and get your spot. >> supported by the democrats, supported and funded by the democrats. republicans aren't supporting her they don't like, and they don't like her policies, she's essentially a democrat, i think she should probably switch parties, you know? probably she should switch parties. griff: even as of last night with a large margin, you have trump really sticking the screws to her. what do you make of this and what do you predict is going to
9:17 am
be the outcome tonight? >> well, i've never seen such a large crowd as we saw last night in rock hill. you know, people waiting outside the arena and you know, i don't think even if biden was to come here, i'd be shocked if he could fill a high school volleyball arena if you spaced the chairs six feet apart. the amount of support trump is getting in the area is overwhelming and whenever it comes to haley i think that most people-- >> why is that? i was a reporter on the ground in 2016 and all of a sudden, south carolina was a game changer for trump's eventual victory and yet now we're seeing trump more popular than nikki haley, a former governor. >> well, i think honestly it's due to all the attacks. people see that he's being unfairly attacked. whenever you're trying to take him off the ballot, you know, i tell people i wasn't initially a trump supporter. i became a trump defender just
9:18 am
because of the unfair attacks. and i think that's the way the majority of the citizens see it. whenever it comes to south carolina, while nikki was a good governor, i don't believe that people feel that she is the same person that she was whenever she was governor. griff: tamika, nikki haley got an endorsement from another governor out in california that i'm not so sure she wanted. listen to this sound bite here. >> first of all, i think she's one of our better surrogates, so i hope she stays in and does well tomorrow. i'm enjoying this primary and hope it continues. so i wish her luck. griff: so, what are your thoughts about that. i can't imagine that nikki haley wanted that endorsement. is this a strategy on the democrats' behalf? >> well, thank you so much for having us. you know, i think it is a strategy of some democrats, to me -- i don't think that that is a good strategy, but certainly i think that nikki haley being in the race, there are a lot of democrats i know
9:19 am
today that are planning to vote, did not vote in the democratic primary that will be voting for nikki haley today. it will be interesting to see if tonight's results show her doing better than the polls perspective, whether or not author -- those are legitimate votes, but looking at what she gets today. inthose will be inflated for crossover votes who are not nikki haley supporters. griff: if democrats go out and vote for nikki haley and don't intend to vote for her in a general election, what does that tell you? >> it tells me that there is a segment of folks who believe that having nikki haley on the ballot in november is better than having donald trump. honestly as a democrat i don't think either one matters, i think that president biden is really going to do well in november and we're looking
9:20 am
forward to november and so while they're still fighting it out in their primary, we are moving forward to november to make sure that president biden gets reelected. griff: all right, brandon, the last word. she says couldn't matter haley or trump. >> not in south carolina, we have 46 counts and you have what, four or five counties in south carolina. regardless of the candidate, south carolina will go republican, we're a solid red state. griff: we shall see what happens tonight. and thank you for taking time. >> thank you. griff: alicia. >> thanks, griff. bell bill melugin has new details on the background of the suspect in the death of georgian, laken riley. stay with us. -ugh. -here, i'll take that.

migrants per capita than any other city in the united states, a little more than 38,000 where it stands now. with that in mind, right, and you're what, 45, 50 minute drive from where i'm sitting right now. can you explain how this resolution works? what does it mean and how does it play out day-to-day for you? >> well, and thank you for having me, alicia. the resolution is intended to, first let the citizens know that the town council takes its fiduciary obligation seriously and that we're not going to spend taxpayer dollars on supporting the illegal immigrants that could come down from denver. denver has its -- as you know, they're tapping into their regular budget, which is taxpayer money in order to support those illegal immigrants dropped off there and we wanted to make sure that denver knew don't send them south to us, colorado springs
9:47 am
has done a similar resolution as has the el paso county commissioners. alicia: and you bring up the bugetary problems. and mayor mike johnson of denver says they're overwhelmed and had to cut budgets across the board all over the city. take a listen to what he had to say. >> we have to figure out a plan for shared sacrifice, we will have to figure out how to make some cuts to city budgets and city services without trying to impact those most at risk. we will have to restructure how we support migrants and the number of migrants we can support. alicia: mayor, you can see what denver is attempting to do with the situation and i want to go further because we also learned just today that the murder suspect in laken riley's murder is a venezuelan here in this country illegally released into the united states via parole. when we start to talk-- we talk about the money aspect, but there are so many americans who are worried about crime in general, and this really brings home some of that concern, that
9:48 am
americans all over have. >> yeah, first of all, the situation at uga is completely tragic and could have been avoided had we actually had the federal government doing their job at the border, which they have not been, and the safety and security of the 10,000 plus residents here in monument is of natural concern and they have brought that up via e-mail. i've had 30-something e-mails and voice mails sent to us since the resolution passed, stating approval of the resolution and their concerns about their safety and security. alicia: and we should add, and we have been talking, this doesn't mean that all migrants, everyone who comes to this country is some sort of criminal, however, when you talk about the sheer number who are crossing our border and being released into the country, law enforcement is simply unable to keep up with the backgrounds of who these folks are and sadly, we're finding out that some of these backgrounds are very dangerous and that's what you're talking
9:49 am
about here. >> correct. i mean, i have a small department of police officers. we would be relying on the county to provide their sheriffs if we had situations like what goes-- what went down at uga or if busloads came in and overwhelmed our police department. it would be problematic and that is the biggest thing is the safety and security of our citizens if there were criminals that were dropped off. alicia: yeah, and also, when you talk about the city of denver, they have their sanctuary status and i can tell you as a resident here, the city has changed. it's having a hard time at this time, but when you're talking about the people who live in your town, are they noticing anything different where you live? like are you seeing people arriving in your town that weren't there before? >> no, not yet. we're actually not experiencing that at this time. however, so that the colorado

listeners can understand what's going on out of denver, the mayor of canyon city reached out to me in the last 48 hours and provided me a picture of a van that was dropped off by a methodist church from denver and they dropped off a dozen illegal immigrants. they had no identification. they had no ability to speak english and the police could not do anything with them. they just vanished into the community and they're about 17,000 people in canyon city, whereas monument's only about 10,000, so there are vans making their way down. alicia: mayor mitch lakind of monument, colorado. good to talk to you and give us perspective and explain what some of the smaller communities surrounding the sanctuary cities are doing and experiencing. thank you. >> thank you. griff: it's primary day in the
