hey jonathan. >> hi alicia acuna, this is historic day because is the first time the boeing starliner will launch with astronauts on board, two of them astronauts, cindy williams and butch remarque hundred though spend about eight days testing the spacecraft though the carry degree of unpredictability, these two retired navy pilots expressed confidence going into the mission early on as if they have the full support of their families. >> we trust in the sovereign god that will whatever you know the plan is, we are ready for it. and they are excited as we are ready to go. >> we would not be sitting here if we did not feel until our families, that we feel confident the spacecraft in our capabilities to control it and to be on it and so i think you're along for the ride, and lisa my family come there excited. >> boeing starliner found a potential wing - in this space
9:22 am
craft space shoot and it firehouse or didn't insulation tape used to rob electrical wiring, and boeing repaired some of those problems in the company and also though decided that a small helium leak in the propulsion system, was not serious enough to delay the mission any further. >> it did not come down to making trace and came down to is it safer not. and it is safe and that is why we determined that we can go fly with what we have. >> right now, nasa relies on space x2 shuttle the astronauts to and from the international space station and they also swap seats whether russian space program for the space agency but obviously like another commercial option. if this boeing starliner testified is successful and boeing starliner certified, they will have a second commercial venue. alicia: that's very exciting

jonathan, thank you so much we will be back with you live in just a bit. griff: we are indeed here we go, three minutes and roughly 30 seconds, the spring and now, former nasa astronaut international space station commander, col. terry and as we way, just over three minutes of this blastoff, give us some context for the significance of this mission. >> yes and mike we just said, the big significant is that this will be a second way for americans who launched the astronauts american soil so this is a big deal and i think it will be a great day for boeing they've had a rafah couple of years and this could be a really good event for them and so when boeing does welcome this good for america some really rooting for them today and it is a big day for the space program. griff: can you talk about problems from the youth had significant with four years of delays come to the tune of $1 billion in your looking live and you can see some of the steam, the me talk because of your experience, and what is

that like, to be there where you have butch well more sunny williams in the rocket about to take off in just over two minutes from now. >> will for me and my first bite, i was a pilot of the space shuttle and there's a lot of things from the pilot to do, but an hour to be for that is not much going on and i actually fell asleep while i was trapped in waiting, but as you get down to the final minutes come you get very focused and i mean, he was 100 percent focus on what was happening in her thinking that i cannot believe this is really going to happen is meant so many years waiting and i'm sure, the no doubt that they are focus on what is about to happen in waiting a long time for this and so the gotta be ready to go and it's been a while since both of them have floated space on further very excited about that. >> we are getting close to 90 seconds, may 6 flight was scrapped because of the helium valve leak, that jonathan just so clearly laid out this point
9:25 am
though, this closed just over a minute to go in his pretty much, is going to happen what might be the last minute things are looking out. >> well from income on my first lie, we scrubbed with of the whole process knows a little bit nervous and stressed out we came back out coming to do it again i felt much more confident like it already been there and done that and so i'm sure they feel very confident and they rehearsed it many times running out of there just waiting to feel that huge explosion of rocket fuel underneath them and you get smashed back pretty quickly especially the capitol and so they are about to have a think the right of the lives for sure. >> they are what was going to your mind, those last 60 sec seconds. >> will i was thinking about my family, and i was watching and there was literally, tens or maybe hundreds of thousands of people in florida so i was hoping that they get a good one launched at nighttime to the nighttime turning to david all of the flames of the rocket engine lit up in this will be a different experience but i was thinking of folks watching.

>> kernel as we are watching this, i am told that the countdown clock has been positive what might be happening. >> it could be one of a million things and i'm not trying to do that looks right now 70, located systems, there is where the propellant pressure systems on the propellant of us i come the etiquette lately, which is one of the helium kinda pressurizes the rocket fuel. i think of the electrical and so i'm not sure it sounds like they have paused the camp in not going to watch on time okay, that's what it sounds like col. let's go back to correspondent jonathan here come over this now here in jonathan, is her insight on why the pause. jonathan: yes, were waiting for more information on why this clock is paused and you know the last time that we were here on may 6, we got so close the astronauts suited up and actually they entered this boeing starliner spacecraft and

bubble to their season and they had this issue develop within audible buzz, on a pressure relief valve on the exterior of the palace five rocket come the united launch rocket that boeing starliner says the top and they did not believe that it oppose an eminent hazard to the astronauts but because they did not know how many vibrations, that this particular relief valve was rated for, they did not want to take chances have no out of an abundance of caution, the brought the whole assembly knocking doors and they work on it and the replace the valve in the process, they discovered an unrelated helium leak on the star minor spacecraft used to force some of those propellants and fuel in the spacecraft come over the need to go in the propulsion system, that was a
9:28 am
very small leak. after researching it extensively, they decided that it did not pose any threat to the astronauts that they did have a workaround solution if the leak were to get any work or worse and so they proceeded with today's launch but we were up to four minutes, before i launch and now we are watching that frozen countdown walk. >> we are and as we wait to find out what positive col., take us what it is like to experience, to get so close, 20 launch and have a pause was it like sitting in the cockpit. >> will yes, my first lie, we pause also if you minutes before enemas for the weather and i was very disappointed. and i was like come on guys election wanted were this close pretty to the folks the ground they do not have will be called launch danger to make sure that everything is safe before you launch. it is space shuttle mission, one of the times they actually lit up the engines of the engines ran for a few seconds, the cut them down on the pad.
9:29 am
one of the astronauts on board, they had a few tents seconds to say police and he said i thought we would be at higher altitude when the engine shut off so you know, hopefully, this is something they can fix and can continued on with the countdown will have to wait to hear from nasa but if not, they will pull the crew out and come back again and try to get in when they are ready to go. >> you are looking live at cape canaveral space station there and we are now, some nearly four minutes past the expected launch time until 25 easter card the clock was paused at four minutes in jonathan, do we have any indication, the timeline of when they might decide to scrap it. i know there are alternate dates in the planning, to include a window of flight, tomorrow and sunday as well as initial and an additional days that might need a window. jonathan: exactly griff jenkins
9:30 am
and what we are looking at because the international space station is a moving target, they deal with what they call, instantaneous launch windows and other what you have to hit a very specific launch time, in order to hit the corrected trajectory and so if you have an extensive delay due to a problem, and you delay the launch the iss is going to be far out of range and you have to do it at a different time so if today's launch indeed, has been scrubbed, we will be looking at another launch attempt in the earliest launch attempt will be tomorrow, and also backup opportunities on the fifth and the sixth. griff: and jonathan, we see that boeing is confirming that it has been paused or delayed, for 24 hours and boeing officials are just now hitting the wire saying that for a technical issue, we don't know what that technical issue is, the col., let me just get your thoughts, clearly even
9:31 am
though they may still be able to do this tomorrow, and certainly disappointment, with many hoping that this was going to be the first of a test flight of many to come. jonathan: i'm sure will be in a string the shuttle error, we had lots and lots of dozens of scrubs they're always frustrating for the crew the frustrating for families who has to travel down and take days off work and so on. the bottom line is that the most important thing is a safe launch ongoing finally does have a safe launch, no one will remember the scrubs right, all you'll remember is the success. you just have to deal with it as part of human spaceflight. i come back and try to get tomorrow and interesting to hear with a technical issue was. griff: it will be in need and will be will be following all of this and col. think you for your insight marching with us and jonathan serrie standing by there and cape canaveral will bring you in more and col. thank you for your time appreciate it.
