issa will tell us about the growing concerns on capitol hill. chad pergram on the growing cracks among democrats as they consider biden's viability as a presidential candidate. we'll head to jacque heinrich starting us off live at the white house this morning. >> good morning. a lot of headlines this morning saying the president got a strong showing of support from the democratic governors who descended on washington to assess for themselves whether the president's candidacy can be salvaged after the debate. i'm left wondering if we watched the same press conference. they didn't lead with any confirmation the president is, in fact, remaining in the race despite all of the denials that we have heard from the white house, the campaign, even the president himself that he is considering dropping out. this is what we heard in chronological order first. listen to this. >> path to victory is november is the number one priority. the number one priority of the president. that's what we're trying to get done.

[cheers and applause] 800,000 manufacturing jobs. unemployment under 4% for a record two years in a row. >> mike: president biden pledged to build the economy from the bottom up and middle out. is there evidence of that?
7:47 am
>> no. i don't think so. when real wages have fallen for 26 months of the biden administration, that means that wage growth is slower than the rate of inflation. you are not helping the bottom and not the middle, which is where the bulk of the hourly workers exist in our economy. plus what's happened at the lowest end of wage workers in this country is no one really talks about it from an economic perspective, is the migrants that have come across the border that are taking some of those lower-wage jobs. so i think we're seeing a tremendous squeeze. the reason why people aren't traveling is because -- you and i talked about this at christmastime on the air -- is that those credit card bills would come in january and people would realize that falling behind. now you are seeing the cumulative effect of it this summer. >> mike: how much of holiday travel and maybe buying in a holiday sale is based on
7:48 am
optimism in the economy? >> i think there is a lot of that. if you look at many of the measures of consumer confidence and consumer sentiment you have seen those falling off in the last several months. and the summer is six months after the holidays is the time -- two times of the year where people tend to stretch a little bit. i was doing a little googling in prep for this. a family of five for a trip to walt disney world, four hours north of where i am in florida, is $6 thousand. once you look at that, even if you get in the car and drive there, it is still staggering how much it costs. that's up considerably from where it was pre-pandemic. >> mike: as we cover the news this holiday, if we see a lot more people on the highways versus crowded airports, should we assume the middle class is road tripping? >> i think they are road tripping and i think the thing we'll talk about this summer is

more and more people taking stacations. the only problem with the stacation is i've seen many signs up in the northeast, town pools saying lifeguards needed. when you can't go to the town pool because there is no lifeguard on duty because they can't find one, so much for the stacation. i don't mean to be doom and gloomy around fourth of july but i do think the economy is not as strong as the president's remark on the stump. >> mike: great to see you, thank you so much. >> thanks. >> julie: a campaign in crisis. how president biden is trying to right the ship after a debate performance that disturbed even his closest allies. pain was keeping me off my game. and now i'm winning again. blue-emu is the powerful relief i need. shop our expanded family of products at major online retailers.

anyway. also we are taking a look hurricane beryl. live look at cayman islands. it packed serious winds. category 4 as it hit land in jamaica. at this point it doesn't seem like there have been casualties at this point. but right now if you take a look at the latest track out in the water is always a good thing despite the fact it did touch on land, this thing has probably brought more wind and rain but not necessarily devastation it seems so far. of course it is not over yet. it could pick up steam under warm waters as you know, it's how hurricanes work. robert gray was talking about it is an early time in the season to be seeing such a powerful hurricane. which being that i was from the south, i remember if you see hurricanes this early in the season, it sort of spells out the rest of the hurricane season just be prepared this will be the beginning.
