>> take a look at what happened -- [inaudible] screen mac and. [inaudible] >> a fox news alert and breaking new details in the assassination attempt of former president donald trump. overnight the fbi identified the shooter is 20-year-old thomas matthew crookes of bethel park, pennsylvania. he drove one hour.
1:02 am
he took position on a roof 130 yards from the podium and opened fire of former president of the united states before he was shot and killed. it is sunday, july 14. he says he was shot by a bullet that pierced the top of his right ear. he expressed condolences after one reporter was shot and killed and two others critically hurt. he will travel to the rnc this week as planned. we have live team coverage with jonathan gilliam and a witness in the crowd just feet from former president trump when shots were fired. >> first we go do cb cotton. >> good morning. good morning. we are half a mile away from what the fbi is calling the scene of an attempted assassination of former president donald trump.
1:03 am
he was escorted off the rally stage, we are getting another sign of strength from the former president when he landed in new jersey early this morning walking down the steps of his plane unassisted at the airport. the injuries are out of the camera's view. the former president describing the physical pain he observed on truth social. i was shot with the bullet that pierced the upper part of my right year. i knew immediately that something was wrong and that i heard a whizzing sound, shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. much bleeding took place. i realize then what was happening." the shots came from "an elevated position outside of the rally venue." people across the country now left wondering how the named shooter thomas matthew crookes of bethel park, pennsylvania,
1:04 am
was able to access a roof so close by that left trumpet rally goers ducking for their lives. >> there were people behind us. everybody started shooting. they were right there. >> somebody started yelling hit the ground. hit the ground. i looked over and saw the smoke from the gunfire. >> they got president trump down , secret service did, got him out of there, got him off the stage. he was bleeding. >> president biden returned to the white house from delaware earlier than planned following the attack. biden spoke with trump but details of the call were not shared. the president with this message. >> no place in america for this kind of violence. it is six. it is six.
1:05 am
you cannot allow for this to be happening. we cannot be like this. we cannot condone this. >> during a late night press briefing, the fbi said it was the secret service for securing around the rally. the secret service would have to answer questions on whether that rooftop was part of the initial assessment. >> we do have a lot of questions for the secret service. we will go through those with jonathan and just a moment. cb, thank you. let's bring in shane who was just 40 feet away when those shots rang out. walk us through what you saw, what you heard. >> it was, you know, a huge crowd. everyone was in great spirits.
1:06 am
president trump came on stage. the energy was superhigh in the room as he was going through everything. there were several shots that started out. distinct shots. president trump went out of sight of our view from where we were, we took cover, basically, our wives are with us, try to get everyone down, make sure everyone around us was safe. once everyone was down on the ground and safe, we were able to get up and assess the situation from there. >> to see it unfold from a tv screen is shocking. i can only imagine what it was like to be there just feet away. roman emotional standpoint, can you describe what the crowd was like? >> very stunned. i know that is kind of an
1:07 am
obvious thing to say, but everybody was just stunned. that turned into anger really quickly. but a good anger. it was not anything more than i cannot believe this is happened in trying to figure out what was going on for the people and safety of everyone around. >> did you assume immediately he had. to be shot or something else in the initial seconds that it happened? >> we saw the president react. we did not have sight of him. we knew he was not greatly injured by the fist bump at the end. we did not know the extent of everything being there. >> can you describe the area that this rally took place? we know the shooter was
1:08 am
positioned on a roof about 130 feet away. >> yeah. it is a rural farm fairgrounds. lots of wide open space. where everything was. the event was in the middle of a grandstand setting. it was a great day. very, very hot. a typical rural fairgrounds. >> how was security as you entered that rally? >> i thought security was phenomenal. there was a huge crowd there. probably 50,000 people that came through. it took us about an hour to get to the line, to get through security. i was impressed by the way things worked. >> were your bags checked? where there metal detectors?
1:09 am
>> absolutely, yes. >> police have confirmed, three people, one tragically killed, too injured, they were all men. did you see them? did you know where they were positioned in the relation to the president? >> we did see one of the gentlemen that were killed. they were off to our right which would have been to the president left in the grandstands. it was a wild scene. the police and first responders, everybody went right to him. they thought it was the shooter. once they knew it was a victim the clouds parted and they were able to get the gentleman down off of the grandstands. condolences to the family. they should have never happened.
1:10 am
>> did you walk away thinking, hey, this could have been much, much worse. not only for donald trump but even more people in that crowd. >> very much so. that was a topic of discussion the entire way out. frankly, since the incident. we hate to think what could have been. thankfully, president trump is okay. more importantly, thinking this could have been something much more tragic. and it is for families that lost loved ones today. >> what did it mean to you when you sell the president raise his fist to make sure that everybody in the crowd knew that he was okay? >> that was absolutely an amazing moment. a call to action moment, i believe. it was a sign of strength and solidarity.
1:11 am
this is where we are. this is not going to stop anything. >> you mentioned, we've been talking about the former president, but there should also be a lot of focus on the one man that lost his life. no one knows that more than the former president. he has authorized a gofundme for the victims. gofundme authorized by the former president. shane, thank you so much for joining us. we are so glad you are okay. incredible moment in time. thank you for relaying what you saw during this rally. thank you. let's bring in jonathan. thank you for joining us as well ten hours removed from an assassination attempt of the former president.
1:12 am
1:13 am
1:14 am
>> when you see all of this unfold, the president holding his ear, ducking down, secret service surrounding him, what are you focusing on in this footage? >> first thing, i think most people know me, they see me come on this show and talk about my experience in the fbi and as a seal, i have a company, i do, i have clients, and we do protection for these clients. i am involved in these types of threat assessments and operation orders and carrying out these types of operations where we protects people. having worked with the secret service before, as i was watching this unfold, i could
1:15 am
not believe how long this played out before they got him off of that stage into the car and took that vehicle that long to depart that area. it was a lifetime from a protection standpoint. a lot of people on the news, as i was watching this today, did not want to be critical of the secret service. as i watch this again, as we are all watching it here, i am astounded at the way things played out because it. as though the defense of troubled and the movements were being made up as they went on. that is not the way this elite service should be prepared in this type of situation. the one person that reacted properly was donald j trump when he had the ground and got as low as he could. it took forever, in my mind, from a protector standpoint. it took forever to get on him and even longer for them to
1:16 am
react and get him out of there. i cannot believe what i am seeing. these secret service agents don't know whether to holster their gun or keep it out, put their sunglasses on her take them off. he should have been out of there so fast that the people did not even realize he had gone yet. that was the first thing that i noticed. the other thing that struck home very quickly was the fact that this was even allowed to happen. what they do, typically, they do a coordinated effort and then they freeze out zone. 130 yards is not far enough. the only buildings around their
1:17 am
should have been in the frozen zone and no one should have been allowed in that area. not only was that shooter allowed on the top of the building, but there were spectators hanging around that area. you can see them. they saw the shooter. where was law enforcement? that in and of itself, that is not a long distance. when we were siding, 100 yards is what we cited those in with. i was only 130 yards. the max effective range of an ar-15 is about 600 yards and 30a target out the size of a human head very easily. the mission the secret service had was a complete failure. that, to me, is as big as a
1:18 am
story of the president being shot at this innocent bystander in this one individual being killed. this is a huge story. what worries me even more now is the fbi will be investigating this and as you see from a federal standpoint, from a local standpoint of law enforcement, we are in bad shape when it comes to law enforcement. we cannot trust the fbi to carry out this investigation properly, we don't know if they will release information once they get it, i could talk all night about this. i know you guys want me to stop, but i cannot emphasize how much of a failure that this was from the standpoint of starting from point a to point the of protecting a vip. it was just unbelievable as i
1:19 am
watch this. >> also the matter of that witness that told the reporter that he tried to warn law enforcement about someone with a gun. let's take a listen to that soundbite. >> we noticed a guy crawling, you know, there crawling out the roof of the building beside us. 50 feet away from us. he had a rifle. we could clearly see him with a rifle. absolutely. there is a guy on the roof with the rifle and the police were like what? they did not know what was going on. i'm thinking to myself, why is trump still speaking? next thing you know, five shots rang out. >> we are taught if we see something, say something. he did see something, he did say something yet nothing happened. why, jonathan? >> law enforcement is in a position -- they think smoke and
1:20 am
mirrors as a way to solve these issues. if they put up an image that they are prepared and they have strength and they project that image that that is enough. that is not enough. i come up personally, would like to see all special forces turned into one branch of the military. that branch would be responsible for protecting the president, former president and nominees for their prospective parties. secret service has gotten to a point where, look at this, look at what you are seeing right now , they do not know what to do when you hear this individual, that witness telling that story, the fact that law enforcement did not act shows you they did not have a plan to act. anybody that has a plan before something happens will take action. this was 100% reaction.
1:21 am
the stress that these law enforcement officers will go through has to be trained out of them so when something like this occurs, they just act. that is not what you saw. >> a couple following questions on what you've said so far. we hear the former president saying let's get my shoes on. let me get my shoes on. i have not seen issues in any of these shots. they did walk them off in a careful pace. what should it have looked like? >> a protester that came on the stage when ronald reagan was on the stage, the secret service that day and time was different. right here, what you are seeing, first of all, this has nothing to do -- i am not against women in law enforcement, but that the
1:22 am
mail right there is not big enough to be in front of donald trump. he is fully exposed. she is not tall enough to cover his face. i love the image, but he should have been scrambled off that stage because they do not know how bad he has been shot and if he is shot, speed is of the essence. they have to get him to a trauma center as fast as possible. as you can see, that just did not happen. >> the follow-up question, we know this shooter was about 150 yards away of the roof of a manufacturing plant which is a
1:23 am
little bit longer than a football field. the fbi says that building is outside of the security perimeter. who makes that determination? >> the secret service makes that determination and they determined wrong. you will see where the stage was set up, it is all open area. it is fairgrounds. those buildings are the only structures that somebody could have climbed up on and taken a shot from. why weren't those buildings in a frozen zone so they insured nobody was on top of them or in them? this is 101 when it comes to protecting. 130 yards is not a long distance plenty of law enforcement of volunteers that could have stood around there and made sure nobody was coming in and out of there. for that individual to get up on that roof is unheard of. we have a real problem in law enforcement. i will say this to trump. trump is a warrior. to do what he did, go down, think his way through that and come up with that action is unbelievable.
1:24 am
even he has to realize that when it is time to get off that stage because the shooting has occurred, you have no idea if there's more shooters, you have no idea what is going on. these protect these, it has to be driven into their minds that when this happens we have to get out of here. the secret service agents lives are at stake as well. and all of those individuals back there. >> jonathan, hundreds of thousands of people are set to descend on milwaukee today for the rnc tomorrow. what changes in the security set up now? >> hopefully, reduced smoke and mirrors. at least to the point where the smoke and mirrors are not what they are relying on. they need to have war fighters in these situations that are ready to act when action is needed.
1:25 am
the time for games is over with. this nation is divided in a way we have not seen since the civil war. people are stepping up and doing crazy things. these law enforcement agents that will be in and around, they have to assume that something is occurring and it is going to occur, so that they are ready to act. >> we are getting this from house speaker mike johnson. the american people deserve to know the truth. we will have other appropriate officials from dhs and the fbi appear for hearing before our committees asap. jonathan, thank you very much for joining us this morning. let's bring in doctor jeanette. >> of faith that some -- a faith that many of us will not forget.
1:26 am
i was shot with the bullet that appears the outer part of my right year. i knew immediately that something was wrong and that i heard a whizzing sound. i felt the bullet ripping through the skin. much bleeding took place. i realize then what was happening. god bless america. he was immediately taken to the hospital. what unfolded once he was there? >> thank god he is okay. stunned, shocked, heartbroken when i heard of this. what happened, the first thing that happens when you go to the hospital and the initial assessment a primary survey is conducted. exposure of his skin. literally have had a head to toe examination to examine every inch of his body to look for entry and exit wounds to make sure there was not any other
1:27 am
injury that may have been missed other than his ear. what we do know so far is it was the outer external lobe of his ear, from the pictures that we saw, carly, it looked like he had a little bit of tissue damage to the ear and possibly what we call a hematoma which is just a collection of blood from the injury. most likely the specialist, the surgeons cleaned his ear, repaired it with some stitches and even put him on antibiotics, maybe gave them a tetanus shot as well. he will likely have close follow-up to make sure he heals well, heals properly without any complications or infection. no one can be prepared for this type of event. i am grateful to god that he is okay. >> a lot of focus, of course, on the physical, but the emotional as well. surviving an assassination attempt.
1:28 am
what is that like? >> that has to be extremely traumatic for anyone. we always talk about the physical component. we have to consider the mental and emotional impact that this type of trauma, this type of shock can have on someone. especially when you are getting older. president trump is strong, tough , resilient and courageous, but at the end of the day, we are all human. i do worry and have concerns about ptsd, anxiety, depression. he is supported by family, friends. he has all the help he could possibly get. i do know and feel very strongly that he will recover quickly. i hope to see him back out on the stage again very soon. >> he, his wife, his family, all of a sudden thinking, my goodness. if he had just moved his head a couple centimeters in a different direction, this could have been so much worse. >> we talk about ptsd for the victim, but it also affects the family.
1:29 am
those that are watching it, the by standards, those in the audience. you are absolutely right, when i first saw this i saw blood around president trump's ear and i was very concerned that the bullet may have entered into the ear. thank god in heaven that his head was turned just slightly at an angle so it just grazed him. this could have been a horrible, horrible outcome. absolutely sad that we have lost some people already. one innocent bystander and some in the hospital severely injured this could have had such a more severe outcome.
1:30 am
i'm glad the secret service police officers were able to take him down as soon as possible. at this point we should just continue to pray for strength and courage and resilience from our president as he potentially will lead this country again maybe in november. we will see. >> donald trump has a big week ahead with the rnc. what is your recommendation for him there. >> i would say, please, i want you to rest, take it easy, recover. a near killing assassination can really take a toll on you. everyone has different approaches to handling shock and handling trauma. your adrenaline is pumping in the moment. he looked like he was doing great. he looked strong. we saw him walking out of the airplane. he was able to be discharged very quickly after being examined by doctors. i hope he takes it slow, takes it easy. an opportunity for all of us to really appreciate what we have in life. the people that we love to cherish every moment. life is short and it could be gone in an instant. >> he certainly is not want to be known to rest. that is certainly sound advice. thank you for joining us. >> let's bring in jonathan. the dhs secretary issued this
1:31 am
statement. we condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms and commend the secret service for their swift action today. we are engaged with president biden, former president trump in their campaigns and are taking every possible measure to ensure their safety and security. every possible measure,.-- jonathan. a lot of people questioning that this morning. was trump assigned enough secret service personnel. your thoughts? >> it does seemed like there is a lot of things that people that are experts in the field could have been done. somebody on a rooftop not too far away and was able to take shots at the president. thankfully, did not hit him, but hit somebody else. it is concerning to me at this,
1:32 am
you know, if anyone is able to do this, it should be incredibly difficult. it does not seemed like it was. that is quite concerning. the secret service members seemed like they are trying to do their very best and everyone does these let's praise law enforcement after the fact type of thing. there really should be an examination on what could have been done. president trump will not stop doing these rallies. they need to make sure he is safe. he is a warrior and he is probably not afraid but he has people there watching the people in the audience that they need to be safe, too. they clearly were not, yesterday >> bringing in the secret service director before the oversight committee. if you are on that committee, what would you ask?
1:33 am
>> this is not an unusual event for president trump. what is the protocol? how many agents are assigned? how far is the perimeter? other types of things. what is the response time. why did it take so long? why did it take so long for your response to happen? what is the training going forward? we have not had a presidential assassination attempt since 1981 are they up to speed on training and things like that? i would ask a lot of questions about their training. lots of questions about the planning that went into this and other rallies. going forward, these candidates need to be safe going forward. they have a right to campaign.
1:34 am
you hear about a threat to democracy. presidential candidates, if people are trying to assassinate them, that is the greatest threat to democracy. they need all the resources they have to protect them going forward. >> no greater threat to democracy, to your point. >> respect for the law. we could go through assassination attempt throughout history and find different reasons, but in this current day and age, is this attempt just another symptom of what has become a rather lawless culture where people become radicalized weather on the internet or social media or other means and feel there is nothing to stop them for acting upon that radicalization, jonathan? >> i think you are absolutely right. this person probably felt completely justified. you hear this heated rhetoric we have been hearing for a long time about donald trump. people compared him to hitler. he is being demonized on a daily basis. the other thing that almost seems worse, they deem you and i as his supporters, basically
1:35 am
everyone that supports him is unworthy of being treated like a human being. he is an existential threat to democracy. it will be a dictatorship if he is elected. all of these things. it coincided with this total implosion of the biden campaign a couple weeks ago that seems to continue. people believe this is a threat to democracy. president trump will be a dictator and he is comparable to hitler. it's not surprising -- like we all know from following this, this is the democratic party. they enter hysterics when they cannot win on the issue. some people do take them seriously. that is scary. we really do not know what the motivation is. a lot of times, mixed motivations in these things things. dehumanizing donald trump, his family, his supporters.
1:36 am
that is a message coming across to people. >> i'm glad you mentioned the demo nice asian of supporters. one of those apparent supporters is dead this morning and others fighting for their lives. thank you. 4:35 a.m. on the east coast. if you are just joining us this morning, we are continuing our breaking news coverage of the assassination attempt of former president trump. the suspected shooter as 20 -year-old thomas matthew crookes of pennsylvania. >> the suspect was shot and killed after agents -- secret service agents rather after he opened fire on the former
1:37 am
president from a rooftop just outside his butler, pennsylvania , raleigh. no motive for this shooting. cb cotton is live with more. >> the immediate area where those gunshots rang out is now an active crime scene. the roadway leading to the rally site is blocked off. so many people wondering how the name shooter was able to access a rooftop with a direct vantage point to the rally stage. some witnesses reported seeing the shooter go from roof to roof before the shooting and one witness recounted the chaos to fox. listen. >> president trump came on stage the energy was superhigh in the room as he was going through everything. as the video showed, several shots that started out. two different distinct rounds of shots. president trump went out of
1:38 am
sight of our deal from where we were. we took cover, basically, our wives were with us, try to get them down. make sure everyone around us was safe. we did see one of the gentlemen that were killed. >> just horrific. mike johnson says the house will conduct a full investigation. house oversight committee chairman now calling on the secret service director to hear july 22. a former fbi agent weighing in on how this scene looked. >> it is not a long distance. when i was on the seal team, 10d those in with. i was only 130 yards. the max effective range is about 600 yards.
1:39 am
at 300 yards, anybody can take a target out the size of a human head very easily. the entire mission that the secret service had at this function was a complete failure. >> meanwhile, people from all political views continue to a dam -- condemn the assassination attempt. strength from former president trump who arrived in new jersey early this morning. you cannot see the entries on trump's ear, but eric trump told our colleague that his dad was " one of the toughest guys." the white house has confirmed president biden spoke with trump , but details on the call
1:40 am
have not been shared. before that the president returned to the white house, before he returned to the white house, rather, he shared this message from delaware. >> there is no place in america for this kind of violence. it is sick. it is sick. we cannot allow for this to happen. we cannot condone this. >> president biden's campaign announced it will pull down television campaign ads as quickly as possible following this tragedy. >> live for us in butler pennsylvania. thank you. let's bring in jim hansen. jim, there had been warnings for months about the elevated threat level in the united states. this shooter came from bethel park, pennsylvania. would you classify this as
1:41 am
domestic terrorism? >> i think it is fair to do that any attempt on the former president and the current front runner in the presidential race is an act of domestic terrorism. the horrible thing is given that increased threat of violence, the trump campaign had asked for increase security from the secret service and that was turned down by the director. i think if she is called before the house oversight committee to go ahead and testify, she should be the former director at that point in time. she has no business running that agency. >> there have been some people that have speculated that one of the reasons they may not have had a secret service agent stationed on this roof 130 feet away where the shooter was was because of a lack of resources, a lack of personnel, you think that that is the case?
1:42 am
>> i think it is fair to assume that. if you are looking for where a shooter is likely to be, that is literally the closest building that someone could get on with a site line to the stage where president trump was going to speak. it is a saying -- it is insane to not have a police cruiser outside that building to make sure no one goes up climbs on top and shoots at the president. >> it appears that shooter was taken out by secret service agent just moments after he fired shots at the president. the secret service agent on an elevated platform near the president. have you seen the footage? what is your assessment there? >> that counter sniper teams there that were supposed to be looking for this. the roof on this was elevated in a way they would not have been able to see him from that position until he actually crested it and aimed at the president. the real problem is the atmosphere fear that has been created by senior democrats using elimination nest rhetoric. nancy pelosi saying he cannot be president, he must be stopped.
1:43 am
biden himself said it is time to put trump in the bull's-eye. there are calls that he is a tyrant or dictator if reelected are the kind of think that obviously is putting our country in danger. i do not want to hear this is a both sides thing. the worst thing i've heard from republicans is biden's brain has turned to putting maybe he should go back and lay in a beach chair. >> the former president and president biden have spoken. president biden said there is no place in america for this type of violence. we have reaction coming in from bill clinton, barack obama, nancy pelosi, leticia james. does this coming together matter ? >> i think they have to say that at this point. other than being politicians that are incredibly hypocritical how they cannot recognize their own rolls in creating this type of an atmosphere.
1:44 am
they have done everything to demonize donald trump. they have attempted to put them in jail for trumped up charges. now, it seems like they have incited violence that was used to try to kill the former president of the united states. it is disgraceful, and they are to blame. >> after this happened, a couple hours ago now, the fbi and the pennsylvania state police held a press conference. one of the thing that came out of it, they were not sure if this was a lone wolf attack. they also said there is no existing threat. how do you thread that needle of those two things and, also, not sure this is a loan wolf attack, when will we be sure if it was one. >> they cannot tell anything like that at this point. they are just trying not to
1:45 am
create a larger panic attack among people. at this point, all they know is there is one person that fired shots and they killed him. they don't get to ask him because of that why he was doing things. they want to search their social media, computers, anything he has done to indicate what is reasons for doing this work. as far as any larger connectivity, if they find that in some of his back trail online or at his home, they can use that to determine whether it was part of a larger conspiracy. we can look at the revolutionary violence that has been going on in this country and know that that is been whipped into a frenzy. that will continue throughout this race because of the idea that trump cannot be allowed to be president again because it will somehow be the end of our republic. >> the mayor of pennsylvania was at this rally. let's listen to what he had to say. >> there are single-family homes in this area. absolutely. major arteries for traffic that come through here. it is not ridiculous to think that somebody with a good shot
1:46 am
could set up outside at this venue and with the right conditions, be able to reach out and touch somebody in a bad way. >> in the right conditions reach out and touch somebody in a bad way. what do you think about that? >> the distance was 130 meters. a minimal distance from a prone breasted position tissue. the advantage we had was they attempted a headshot. donald trump is an animated speaker so his head was moving and that saved his life. there never should have been an opportunity for someone to have a weapon like that.
1:47 am
they should have had surveillance on any place that could have provided that kind of a shooting position. again, we are back to the fact that there was not sufficient manpower available to the secret service. i would commend the agents i counted behind the bulletproof barrier and covered him and quickly moved him out, but the larger's secret service leadership seem to be focused on their d ei and other woke agenda rather than providing the security that a former president of the united states deserves. >> it looks like the leadership of secret service will be facing questions before congress very soon. thank you for joining us. >> good to be with you. >> fox news contributor and senior pastor at the first baptist church, joining us now. this really shook a lot of us, including myself to their core. what is your message to all of us is morning as we tried to process this? >> i think what we saw this
1:48 am
yesterday was certainly a display of the reality of evil. it is real, it is present, it is nonpartisan. >> we also saw a miraculous display of the power of god. i had a doctor friend to look at the pictures and said if there'd been 1 millimeters difference in the trajectory of that bullet, we would have been dealing with a fatality. the only way to explain this is god. i remember back in march 1981 after president reagan was shot he said days after he thought god had spared his life for reason. his reason was to destroy the stranglehold that the soviet union had on the world. i believe god has spared the
1:49 am
life of president trump for reason. to return us to the judeo-christian foundation. what we saw yesterday was nothing short of a miracle. >> eric trump encapsulated the feelings of so many when he said my dad is the toughest person i know. pastor, getting shot has to impact one's mind set in some way, shape or form. this is something different. this is getting shot. what is your message to trump? >> i sent a private text message to president trump and told him that our church who loves president trump and hosted him several times, we love him and we are praying for him. my message is to keep on doing exactly what he is doing. the indescribable display of strength that we saw yesterday was just breathtaking. i think, honestly, we might as well just skip the conventions and go on to the inauguration.
1:50 am
i think people are hungry for this kind of courage and a leader. i would encourage president trump to remember billions of people love him and pray for him every day. >> pastor, thank you for your words on this historic morning. we appreciate it. congress is preparing a full-scale investigation including the response from law enforcement. mike johnson posting "the house will conduct a full investigation of the tragic events today. the american people deserve to know the truth. we will have secret service director and other officials from dhs and the fbi appear before our committees asap. >> florida congressman joining us now. good morning to you. we also another post from your colleague michael walt's. i've a very reliable source telling me there been repeated requests for stronger secret service protection for president trump denied by secretary mayorkas. what do you know about this and how should we digest this piece
1:51 am
of information from congressman walt's? >> i have heard the same things. our chairman of the committee on homeland security which i sit on has called for an investigation hearing on this subject. what happened in pennsylvania, where the request for additional security for the president, were they denied? why? we will look into this and the events leading to this incident and the failures of his secret service protection and the law enforcement in that rally. i mean, look, to allow a sniper within 130 yards and you do not have that position secured, that is inexcusable. i used to be a swat medic. one of the first in the united states. i can tell you we would start practicing sniping against terrorists. we would start at 100 yards.
1:52 am
we would shoot up balloons. that is not a hard shot. not a hard shot at all. 130 yards elevated position, clear line to the president and nobody is safeguarding that. it is inexcusable. one of the things we will be looking into with what happened here in the failure of security to safeguard the president. president trump is one of the bravest guys i know. i know this will just strengthen his resolve. we saw it right after the shooting. his fists up in the air. he will fight and we will nominate him on thursday. we will fight like hell to make him the next president of the united states. >> so fascinating to see what he says on thursday when he accepts that nomination. trump sank the rnc will proceed in milwaukee has planned this week. how do you expect this attempt
1:53 am
to change this entire week? not only a security perspective, but a tone perspective? >> you see in my tone that i am a little bit upset that somebody was able to take a shot at president trump and do it from a fairly close distance. by the grace of god that he survived. so, the tone, i think, us republicans, we are upset. if you thought we were motivated before, we are super motivated now. a lot of people when they saw his reaction will turn to president trump. the democrats, left-wing media has been demonizing president trump for the last eight years calling him a russian spy, a threat to democracy. he will take away your freedoms, he will be a dictator, all a bunch of lies. now we will be fighting back even harder for president trump.
1:54 am
>> going back to the congressional baseball shooting. i remember then all ryan and nancy pelosi sat together to watch the game. you have to wonder, at a time like this, will this event unite us or divide us even further? >> look, when i say we will fight, we will fight for president trump. this is just motivated me and i know it will motivate the base to fight for president trump even more. the man that you saw there, you know, defiant, courage, that is the man that we need as president of the united states. this is not going to be about violence. our differences should be resolved at the ballot box and only the ballot box. that is what we need to do. we will not shy away from this fight. we will fight even stronger to make president trump the next president of the united states. that is what the person america and the world needs.

>> i know you are heading to milwaukee very soon to be with the former president. it will be a jampacked busy week and we will all be watching. congressman, thank you for joining us. >> my pleasure. >> let's bring in former fbi director. we have this individual identified. the presumptive shooter. 4:54 a.m. on a sunday morning. ten hours after this attempted assassination took place. what is the fbi doing right now to figure out why this guy acted like this? >> they are dissecting every aspect of this person's life. i'm a little surprised it took him that long to identify him. they are looking at whether he has ideology or was driven by
1:56 am
ideology which would make this not just an assassination attempt, but domestic terrorism. if there is anyone else in his network that may have shared that ideology. are there others? carly mentioned earlier about reconciling this discrepancy. there is no threat, but yet we have not identified this person. you cannot reconcile those two things. i also want to comment about what jonathan said earlier. he was spot on. this was a security breakdown from start to finish. this was, the primary goal, the primary mission of the secret service is to prevent this type of action. react as swiftly as they can to get him out of the danger zone. neither happened here. i don't want to issue heart -- harsh judgments but it was definitely a security breakdown

>> the image we will all remember the president. you can see his face, you can see his fist. he was saying fight, fight, fight. there are questions of whether that should have happened. if he should have been allowed to be that visible following this assassination attempt on him. >> absolutely not. if you look at what happened with reagan when he was shot, they had him in the car within seconds. as jonathan said, it was a lifetime before they got him off that stage. it was a great moment when he pumped his fist, that will go down in history as one of the most dramatic moments in this country's history, i think, but it should not have been allowed to happen. they should've whisked him out of there in seconds. no matter what he wanted to do whether he wanted issues are pumped his fist, he should have been off that stage in the car and out of there in seconds. it was a lifetime. if there would've been a second shooter, they would've taken them out. it was almost a kill shot. i hate to put it this way, but it was almost a kill shot as it was. if there would've been a second shooter there would've been plenty of opportunity to take him out again. this breaks every role of the secret service protocol and just general executive protection in general. >> what can the fbi do now to prevent a copycat or is there
1:59 am
nothing they can do because this is a loan wolf acting alone? just decided i will hop on top of the building and fire at the president. >> the secret service has a primary ability to protect. the fbi is to prevent this sort of thing with secret service and get out in front of it. i said this yesterday very early in the process. the fbi would step in. their jurisdiction to investigate this type of incident. lessons learned immediately which i think will be put in play at the dnc, at the rnc. in this case the fb is not just investigating the incident, they are investigating the security strategy around it. they have a conflict of interest they cannot be part of the investigation even though the fbi is playing nice about that part of it. the fbi has exclusive jurisdiction in this case. they will tear this thing apart. they will bring every resource that they have. they will go through this as we mentioned earlier. obviously dissecting this person 's life, his home, social media, electronic devices, friends, et cetera. there will be lessons learned and they will come out pretty quick. >> we were talking about this with the congressman. in terms of questions asked in the days and weeks ahead, he says i've a very reliable source telling me there been repeated requests for stronger secret service. can you get your reaction to can you get your reaction to
2:00 am
they need to look at thepolitic. i mean, anyone who calls this former president ex he extend el threat has blood on their hands. that's president biden. that would include former president obama. anyone else who he demonizes someone in the manner he's been demonized has put a bull's-eye on his back for every little 20-year-old, every wing nut out there who is driven, whipped into a frenzy by that sort of rhetoric. >> this is a stunning time in american history. there's was already going on with the presidential election before this. the landscape has completely changed in the aftermath of yesterday's events. chris, thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you. >> fox and friends weekend starts right now. >> we begin with a fox news alert. it is
