then he had god bless the u.s.a. lee greenwood played a monologue and talked about how this man was not supposed to be here. he almost lost his life. the whole crowd erupted. you could see donald trump jr. looks a little emotional. that's when he was going up the stairs, the president. >> steve: it's different for donald trump. donald trump, with all due respect is a different guy than he was four days ago because, you know, as he said, as he told the "new york post," and we reported yesterday, donald trump told them on the flight out to milwaukee, he said i'm not supposed to be here. i'm supposed to be dead he got a new lease on life. and when you look at the expression when he is going up, i think it was john potter horace something he had never seen on his face and that was gratitude. i almost didn't see tonight and i'm looking at it, thank you.

and as i said, when i interviewed him back when we were doing the vp apprentice almost, we all had a candidate to interview. is he was the most aligned with donald trump. >> ainsley: you lucky duck, you got the best pick. >> lawrence: first one up. if he was -- different candidates had different specialties, if he was going to go full blown maga the person most aligned was going to be j.d. vance. >> steve: sure, for 2024. j.d. vance is the first millennial running mate. when you look at the two of them standing right there. the guy on the right is 39 years old. and the guy on the left is in his 70s. and so you have got to figure that j.d. vance, you know, he wasn't picked because he is from ohio. there is no real electoral gain there he was picked to carry the torch, the maga torch, the america's first torch into the future. nobody can articulate donald trump's america first credo and

ideas better than the smooth-talking senator who, you know he was just sworn in last year as a freshman senator. so, you know, a lot of people say on day one, is he ready to be president? you know, barack obama got a lot of that same criticism back in the day. he is his pick. >> ainsley: he talked about his past. we have all either red the book or seen the movie. hillbi"hillbilly elegy." he grew up in a democratic family. he was a never trumper a while back. >> steve: vocal. >> ainsley: vocal about it called him in the atlantic called him america's hitler and cynical a-hole. >> steve: that's going to leave a mark. >> ainsley: a lot of americans can relate to that they weren't -- we interviewed some people that were democrats saying they are changing their mind at this time because of the jewish vote or whatever the issue might be. what i like about is he watched president trump as a president four years ago. and he liked what he saw.

and that changed his mind. he talked to sean hannity about that. a lot of people are going to play those old sound bites, probably. he flipped. he changed his mind. he said he bought into the media lies. watch this. >> my book came out in 2016. "hillbilly elegy." the story of growing up in poverty and achieving the american dream. starting out in business. i really didn't care that much about business. i certainly had views. i was a republican but i was not near lear as involved as i am today. again, something that really changed for me, and i think for a lot of americans is, we saw the results of the trump presidency compared to the obsessive, deranged media reaction in 2019 and 2020. like what's going on? what is so bad about this guy that he has delivered rising wages for american workers and peace in the world. why is the media so obsessed with him. a lot of americans have had a similar awaken over the last few years. you compare the results with the reaction and clearly the people with the reaction to the problem, that's not president trump's problem.

one thing i remember because we all selected a candidate. one thing i appreciated from j.d. vance i asked him -- and we talked about this yesterday. i go, what if you don't get selected? how is that going to make you feel? he goes i would be disappointed about it. i will go. >> brian: i know. >> lawrence: i'll go back and be senator and everything. but it's going to make me feel a way. it's going to take me a while. >> ainsley: i think they all felt that way. >> lawrence: he was the only one that said it. and i said, you know, that's going to benefit him. >> ainsley: i talked to tim scott yesterday. he said i want to serve wherever god wants me to serve. he did say of course it's a disappointment. he would love to be vice president. >> steve: in the meantime get back to one of the top stories you have a question about. >> ainsley: fox news can confirm local police officers were warned about a suspicious person. >> lawrence: unbelievable. >> ainsley: trump pennsylvania rally. >> brian: this is getting worse and worse. a source says a local officer alerted state police of a suspicious man 30 minutes before the assassination attempt.

they took pictures. >> lawrence: unacceptable. jonathan serrie joins me from pennsylvania what he knows about the investigation. jonathan, 30 minutes? >> yeah, 30 minutes before. this according to a law enforcement source telling fox fox news digital that this local law enforcement officer 30 minutes before the shooting went to state police with a photo of this suspicious individual and that there was some conversation between law enforcement over whether this was a range finder that he was carrying or just a pair of binoculars. another law enforcement source telling fox news that there was a lot of police traffic during the rally indicating that officers were searching for a suspicious individual after getting tips from just everyday citizens at the rally. in fact, those citizens' initial sightings of an individual, a

suspicious individual on the roof of that building outside the rally were captured on cell phone video. watch. >> yeah. someone is on top of the roof. look. there he is right there. >> where? >> right there. see him? he is laying down. do you see him? >> yeah. is he laying down. >> officer. >> shouldn't be here. dangerous people. criminals. we have criminals. >> he's on the roof! >> that building just outside the secret service perimeter was used as a staging area for one of the local counter sniper teams according to a federal law enforcement source that was familiar with the security. two federal sources confirm reports that a local officer actually climbed up the roof and spotted the gunman who then pointed the weapon at him. prompting the officer to drop back down off the roof. according to local media, butler county sheriff michael sleep defended the officer's retreat telling kdkatv i would have done the same thing, absolutely.

people think the officers are super men like you hold onto the roof with one hand while you are hanging on for deer life and pull a gun out. it doesn't work that way. the secret service expressed solidarity with local law enforcement, releasing a statement this morning saying our agency composed of dedicated professionals. many from state and local departments cannot fulfill our mission without the support of courageous police officers. we are deeply grateful ran towards danger to locate the gunmen and local partners for unwavering support. any news suggesting the secret service is blaming local law enforcement for saturday's incident is simply not true saturday's events unfolded in a very short period of time. it's her responsibility she said to conduct a thorough investigation to make sure it doesn't happen again.

started shooting? >> yeah. they did not find -- at least not that they have revealed publicly. they said they did not find a manifesto, that's really why they were urgently trying to unlock that phone, hoping that, perhaps, there was a digital trail of what was not left as a hard copy in print. >> brian: thanks, jonathan. they took their second picture of this guy 26 minutes before the shooting. all on walkie-talkies on the same headset. why wouldn't you just say we have a suspicious guy on top of the roof and 26 minutes before the shooting. if a guy has to a gun on top of the roof he should be target practice for a secret service sniper. >> lawrence: i do not understand why the president was not already in the car after they had identified the shooter 30 minutes prior to. that. >> brian: started later was supposed to start at 5:00. >> lawrence: that's right. >> ainsley: police officer went up on the roof and the gunman

allegedly. >> steve: face to face. >> ainsley: aren't you allowed to shoot them at that point? >> brian: he says he was on the ladder. >> ainsley: holding on with one hand. why didn't he gets down and say someone's on the roof? >> lawrence: that's the problem. the local police comms and secret service on different channels. most of the time they have like one or two people that are liaisons between the local police and secret service. you guys got to fix that for the director to say after this major failure that she is still going to stay on as a director? that's crazy. >> how many minutes went by after the police officer saw him on the roof and he got down from the roof. he had time to go get. >> steve: they say that they -- >> brian: the way i understand. the minute they made eye contact shots rang out right after he knew he had to shoot. he picked up the pace afterwards. imagine if they found him some of the preliminary speakers were up there, they could have stopped. this also thought he was suspicious on the ground. thought he was suspicious on the ground. just grab him. >> steve: that was their headquarters.

crosshairs. katie pavlich is joining us live at the rnc. >> katie: good morning. >> steve: what did you make of the damage control joe biden was trying to do last ghit on nbc? >> katie: i think just overall the president and his party there calls for unity and toning down the temperature lasted about 12 hours. the president clearly used the oval office for political purposes, not to really bring the country together. i think the bigger issue than him using a term like bullseye is he is not at all willing to hold anyone accountable. mayorkas going out for the first press conference at the white house since this happened saying he is 100 percent confidence in the secret service. >> lawrence: how? >> katie: and the president has the ability to hold people accountable for what happened and he is not doing it. and another thing in a long list of catastrophic failures. afghanistan, the secretary of defense, disappearing for weeks at a time without telling anybody and then of course the former president almost being killed over the weekend. there is a lot of finger pointing going on and a complete

lack of accountability. you know, maybe you wants to wait for the investigation first. but you don't say you have 100 percent confidence. what would it take for them not to have confidence in at least someone at the secret service? >> brian: katy, the push to push him out continues. >> lawrence: yeah. >> brian: while he sits there defiantly and says i'm staying. worse scenario possible for the dnc is time is running out. the vice president would take the job. but nobody else would ever jump in at this point with donald trump as powerful as he is why would you go up there and get bludgeoned. and the thing is the president of the united states defiant. there is a sense nobody is telling him how bad polling is. >> lawrence: he says i'm still on the horse. >> ainsley: get back on the horse? i'm on the horse! >> katie: there is talk over the weekend because of what happened, the democrats the ones say he has to go trying to pull back their efforts to try to get i'm out. some people are still pushing forward with trying to do that it highlights the cynical nature of what he has been trying to do over the past 24 hours.

he has been trying to say that he is a unifying president. we are all americans. we are not enemies. he actually has a stake in this in the sense that he is desperate to save his first term. is he desperate for another term. he wants to save his candidacy. and now you are seeing him going back to the retz rick. >> ainsley: do you think he will drop out? >> katie: i don't think is he going anywhere, absolutely not. if he doesn't want to go. he is not going. and is he not going. jill is not going either. i don't think is he going anywhere. >> steve: if he is talking about unity, hard to be the head of a party in the middle of a civil war about whether or not you should be the leader. >> katie: can't unify your own party going to be difficult to unify the country. interesting shift in tone after four years of this president and entire party not only going after donald trump but going after anybody who voted for him as a maga extremist. existential threat to democracy. it's quite interesting that they are trying to switch the tone now as the president is drowning when it comes to his own party.
