president. and i am concerned that mr. biden will fall short. we are coming to our convention, we are coming up the deadlines, we need a decision. >> some democrats are convinced he will make that decision as early as this weekend, and major players like barack obama and nancy pelosi are pushing behind the scenes for biden to reconsider his candidacy now that party donors are threatening to with hold campaign money, and with reports like this in the wall street journal, showing biden losing in all swing states and behind in traditionally blue states. >> this is an internal party matter and a matter of the campaign that is playing out very publicly. i think our president is weighing what he should weigh. there are folks saying he is not strong enough or capable enough to be the next president, i disagree. >> reporter: if biden steps aside, timing is paramount.

you guys here. five stages of grief, gloria. denial we have seen that from president biden, anger, i am sure that is happening. bargaining probably happening too. depression, yeah, that would be understandable. acceptance, haven't gotten there yet. are we about to? >> i don't think so. i have thought about what has happened in the last couple of days and i still maintain that what is playing out publicly is rather a shame on the democratic party. and i am a democrat. i think it is basically saying disregard the 14 million primary voters in the fight for democracy, let's remove the people's choice, really because of the polling is bad and it is more i think a fear of down ballot losses. >> are you saying they should just accept the loss? >> i am not saying that overall. but remember, the dnc made this choice to not even have a

competitive primary from the very beginning. despite the call of the candidacy from the member of minnesota. even rfk jr., and i say this, and i know many democrats are just unhappy with the way that our party has played this out. it is not how we should have elections in america. >> so if it does happen, if he is persuaded to step aside, pete, how does this play out, it is a coronation of kamala harris, or do they have this mini primary, and how the heck does that look at the convention? >> there are a few different directions they could go. some are utterly artificial. i have heard a mini primary that they would pull candidates together and frankly go through a, you know, a process by which people would be vetted publicly, somehow. but i have also heard this being

pushed down to the convention which, just as you said in your earlier comments, we are one month still away from the convention. and that process, that very public process as we have mentioned here really is one that does not go well for the democrats both in the process, but i just saw a note today by one of the area democratic congresswomen, sydney caliger, saying this is undemocratic to force him out. >> so gloria's point. and it is interesting, gloria. when you read this new york times report, i want to put up part of that here, with the people involved in this. president biden, apparently, according to the new york times, considers nancy pelosi the main instigator, but he is irritated at mr. obama, a biden official

said it was mr. schiff's lips moving but ms. nancy pelosi doing the speaking. it takes me back to the moment where we saw president obama guide president biden off the stage at the fundraiser and it did strike me was that a signal to the democratic party. did president obama know when he was doing at that point, do you think? >> i have always loved and adored president obama, but i am unhappy with that whole public display of guiding off. basically the old man off the stage. when we take a look at the sudden questions of the viability of president biden, and i am a critic of president biden -- that's a froidian slip there.

but we have known for a while, we have known for a long time. so grass roots democrats, even the congress woman, aoc, and bernie sanders are upset saying this is not the way we proclaim democracy in america. because we have known it for a while. >> jonathan: given the anger there will be among democrats like gloria, whatever happens here, there will be anger in a part of the party, is anyone doomed to defeat here? >> well, i think it makes it very difficult. and again, if you are not almost 100 percent sure that whoever you replace biden with is going to win, in the end, you are looking at a november, and after that, a very fractured party. we talked a couple nights ago about how it feels to me like it is 1968 all over again. when we have the undecided kind of brokered convention there in chicago once again. it feels like we are going down that street again.

>> jonathan: we shall see. pete, gloria back to you towards the end of the show. former president trump preparing for his first campaign rally since formally accepting his party's nomination, that was days after his near assassination. his acceptance speech was focussed on unity and strength, but some critics pointed out the off prompter airing of grievances too. aisha is live in new york tonight with more on the speech and what comes next. aisha, good evening. >> jonathan good evening to you. i can tell you here in downtown milwaukee, the huge security perimeter, the rounds and rings of security by the secret service are all going down. and now they are being put up in grand rapids michigan as that is where trump and vance head to next. there is security fencing now.

we can show you that in grand rapids. trump supporters waiting ahead of tomorrow's big rally. and the former president's first big event since the assassination attempt. as one of the first acts as gop nominee, he had a phone call today with president zellweger that condemned the shooting. and in a truth social post, he said it was a good phone call and he is going to end the war and both sides will "negotiate a deal to end the violence" zellweger says they will have a meeting to talk about lasting peace. this comes after a rnc week, focussed on energizing and unifying republicans. we will see if his speech registered with suburben moms and people in the middle.

greg: -- >> jonathan: aishah you have been the eyes and ears all week. it seemed different this time. how confident did the republican voters that you were talking with all the time on the floor, how confident do they feel victory in november, is it in the bag in their view? >> reporter: i think everyone truly feels like there is a momentum. a palpable momentum that they didn't have before this assassination attempt. even in the weeks before that. and you could sense that not only from the delegates, but also people like governor hutchinson, the former governor of arkansas that has not endorsed the former president. he told me personally that he could feel the momentum and feel that president trump has a really good shot at winning. so you absolutely felt the energy and that energy is going home, right? everyone is going home right no and they are going to try to get out the vote and make sure they energize all the voters that

were not here for convention week so that they get the numbers that they need to win in november. >> jonathan: yeah. and aishah, before i let you go, you broke to us at fox sad news about congresswoman sheila jackson lee. >> that's right. i am pretty stunned right now as well as my colleagues. 74 years old, a congresswoman from texas, she passed away. she announced this summer she was being treated for pancreatic cancer. and she was -- i want to tell you, jonathan, in the middle of everything, which is why it is so stunning, because the last time i saw her not too long ago was very energetic and full of life. she is the kind of person, every time there is a big event, every state of the union, you will see sheila jackson lee in the thick of it all. trying to get a selfie with the

democratic conference. and a big supporter of president biden. this is definitely very sad. very shocking. we know that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. that news was made public last month. the beginning of june. so this is just very shocking. very surprising and it comes at a time, i think when we are seeing, you know, so much disarray on capital hill. there is so much, you know, in motion. going back and forth over this issue of president biden's health, and the election, et cetera. this is a very sobering moment for much of washington, and really, you know, her congressional district in texas. >> jonathan: yes, indeed. let's move to the politics of the moment. and the reviews of president trump's speech at the rnc. let's set that up by playing a sound bite which i think

encapsulates those views. >> i am running to be president of all of america, not half of america. because there is no victory in winning for half of america. every week they get another subpoena from the democrats, crazy nancy pelosi, the whole thing, just boom, boom, boom. >> jonathan: that was quite the split there of president trump. how did you see that speech, julia in terms of appealing to those middle of the ground voters that seem to be the ones who always are critical in a presidential election? >> reporter: yeah, jonathan, i think the speech had a little bit of everything for everyone, i mean, he was obviously very much taking, you know, jabs at his critics, as we saw there. that was very trumpian, and it reminds us very much of the signature rallies, but at the same time, there were parts of the speech that were a bit more, i guess, sobering.

maybe a bit more lower in tone. we don't really see that from former president trump a lot, but we did last night. particularly when he was talking about his -- the assassination attempt against him. so maybe that could be something that appeals to other voters. but at the same time, though, i think that the address was interesting because it went on for 90 minutes, and you know, it had those bouts of sober mellowness, but then he went into his "trumpian" form, because he was feeding off the audience and the energy. >> jonathan: before i let you go, just briefly, as someone so plugged in in politics, do you think that president biden will still be the presumptive nominee this time next week? >> you know, we have never been here, at least in my lifetime right now, so it is hard to say where we go from here.

but i will say this: we have never seen the sitting president, members of their party on capital hill -- this many of them to come out and call for them to step down. so it is hard for them to see how the president comes back from this. we are seeing major allies of the president. so calling on him to step down. so that's going to be difficult. but look his campaign is saying, full steam ahead. >> jonathan: for sure. yep. well, we will see how at all plays out. we are watching every minute of every day. julia, thank you so much. great to have you here this evening. >> reporter: thank you. >> jonathan: let's take a look at the media's role in the convention speech. as many publicly push president biden to withdraw from the race. marianne is joining us. >> reporter: the media hits keep coming from both sides as leading democrats continue calls for president biden to exit the race on national media outlets

and president trump calling out the media, albe it without the fake news comments. democrats saw the speech as rambling and too long, but the first bit of good news after the debate performance led to calls for him to back out. >> this is the first good thing happens happened to democrats in the last three weeks. this really reminded everyone why donald trump is fundamentally unpopular outside of this room. >> reporter: and in true trump style, he took subtle jabs at the media. >> north korea, kim jon-un, i got along well with him, they hated when i said that. >> i bought into the media's lie and is distortions. i bought into the idea that he was going to be so different, a terrible threat to democracy.

>> jonathan: the search goes on tonight for a motive behind the attempted assassination of former president trump. in the meantime, the spectator that died shielding his family was memorialized today. corresponder brian dennis is talking about this tonight. >> we are learning more about what happened the day of the rally. a source familiar with the investigation tells me that thomas crooks was shot with a single shot that was taken by the secret service counter sniper, a second team whose view was obscured. in fact, the source tells me that the sniper could only see crooks' scope and his eye and

forehand because of the lip of the roof. the source described it as "a one in a million shot." we are also told that the shot was taken by a shot of the second counter sniper team, not the one that has been famously photographed. we are told that crooks most likely hit the ar15 behind an ac unit he used to climb up the building. a ladder was not found on the site as previously thought. and that a butler township emergency sniper team doing overwatch of the event was inside the building looking out of the windows of the building watching for suspicious activity while crooks snuck up on the roof behind him. the wall street journal is saying that he flew a drone over the rally site hours before the shooting. a federal enforcement staff says there was no secret service

drone flying that day. in a new letter to dhs secretary, senator josh hully says multiple whistle blowers with direct knowledge have come forward saying that last week's rally was considered a loose security event. >> it was that they were not paroling the perimeter with canines as they were supposed to do. they were not keeping the area around the grounds safe. they didn't have eyes on the roof and the building. it is unbelievable. >> a source tells me that one of the mistakes was not having a clear line of sight to the shooter. jonathan? >> jonathan: great reporting as always. brian, thank you so much. we are fortunate to have with us a retired nypd inspector.

paul, i was interested in talking to you earlier. there has been a lot of finger pointing in the various law enforcement agencies that were on the site that terrible day. and your view of this -- regarding some annoyance among the local law enforcement about the way that they have been criticized. expand on that, for us, if you can, paul. >> jonathan, this was a very heavily attended event. there was a lot of people there. over 20,000, and you need a lot of help if you are the feds. apparently from what i count, is at least 8 other agencies who were in attendance including a lot of small local police departments, among those, the butler township police department, they had 7 officers assigned to traffic duty. they were on an ingress road. when the call aim over that there was a suspicious in the area, four of the officers

peeled off the traffic post and ran towards what they were told was the danger. now, what looks like occurred is that people who were attending the event pointed towards the roof top, two of those butler township police officers ran to the location. one gave the other one the boost. that's the officer from butler township that got on the roof to his chin level. crooks saw him. that's the first time from what our understanding is that law enforcement acquired a full picture of crooks and that appears to have rushed crooks' actions. that officer dropped down when crooks pointed the rifle at him. he got on the radio -- radioed in on the attack com that there was an unfriendly in the location with an ar, an ar15 that looks to have been stashed behind the ac unit. and that is exactly when, it looks like crooks started shooting. so as a result, you can understand why the people here

on the ground and some of the law enforcement here feel a little bit hard done by, by the narrative that the locals blew the area perimeter. >> jonathan: so the local officer being criticized in some corners, simply the fact of him disturbing crooks, forcing him to rush the shot might be a contributing factor in not hitting trump with a kill shot. >> we are going into analysis here, and less for fact, but i would go there. because that takes the the shooer out of his comfort zone. according to everything we have heard, and brian's reporting, he has a drone up. he had pretty good recon, got on the roof and was sure he was out of the line of sight. he felt he was going to hit the target. as a result of the fact that all of a sudden some cop in uniform picks his head up above the ramp

there and looks at him, he all of a sudden -- he turned around and pointed the gun at the cop. and the cop dropped down to the ground and went on the radio, that went into the intel centre and that's one of the questions that remains. not only why did it take so long from when the threat was initially identified for it to go out to all ships at sea, but what was done subsequent to the cop getting on the radio saying we have a problem here on the roof, we have someone with a gun. it is hard to see how fast that happened but it looks like it happened quickly, because the reporting is, while crooks was shooting, the command centre, the command post running this thing was in communication with the sniper team that ultimately took crooks out. >> jonathan: right. paul we are so grateful to have your analysis and expertise. thank you for being there tonight for us, paul.

course. everyone is asking the question, partly because we have not seen any pictures of the actual injury with former president trump. we have just seen a bandaged ear, how bad do we believe it is and what could be the lingering effects of the damage? >> so having done ear reconstructions for dog bites or car accidents this was not just a nick like some people are saying. saying like he is overdramatizing it. the amount of blood on his face shows it caused soft tissue damage to the ear. the face and the ear are v vascualar so a cut on the face will bleed more than a shoulder. with him having blood dripping down his face like we have seen in the photo, it was soft tissue damage, if he wants to fix it and restore his ear so there is no defect, he will need reconstructive surgery. >> jonathan: longer term hearing damage at all with something

like that? >> i don't think so. he described that there was a whizzing sound, usually when something causes hearing loss, there is damage to the bone or it damages the ear drum. soft tissue damage will not cause hearing loss. >> jonathan: okay. what about psychological damage? from going through something like that? >> you know, i think right now he has got so much on his plate that it is probably something that is repressed. i think it is very humbling to have a near death experience like that, but i think right now, looking at him on stage and see how he is speaking he seems humbled and a little bit toned down, but i don't think it has hit him yet. i think it will happen when things calm down a little bit. >> jonathan: if they ever do calm down! maybe in four and a half years time! >> exactly. >> jonathan: on to president biden and the covid19 diagnosis. never good to get covid19,
