special agent in charge. it is notable that the trump team and secret service were well aware of the plot, as you mentioned, originating in iran to kill the former president, yet he still went on stage in butler pennsylvania on the 13th. to be clear, there's no connection discover between the shooter in pennsylvania and iran, but the former president receive what one source because a steady stream of threats since he ordered the killing of this man, general qassem soleimani in january 2020. that specific plot was credible and apparently foiled, according to sources, meaning to try to kill former president trump. now these five people and perhaps more will have to answer for their lack of security on the day of the shooting, knowing there was this threat from iran looming. i also want to point out there is a separate fbi investigation, john, that is a criminal probe looking at the shooter and whether there could be any criminal charges perhaps filed for negligence. the attorney general, merrick garland, in an unrelated announcement, was asked about this overall probe. watch. >> this was a security failure,

10:10 am
was it about time, in your opinion? >> i think it was about time. unfortunately we are in an environment where a lot of federal agencies, there's not a lot of countability. i do appreciate that congress and, frankly, the american citizens said no, we want to understand what happened and we want accountability for what occurred on july 13th. my guess in my suspicion, having worked these types of investigations on the fbi side, is that anyone who signed the operations plan involved in the details of what occurred on jule they are the ones on suspension. pittsburgh field office, it was their operation. likely to lead advance agent they are in charge of the overall event, the rally, and their supervisor, a supervisory special agent, and above them, and assistant special agent in charge, and about them the special agent in charge. and then we understand there was one more suspension. but i think that there is a problem that, frankly, in all of our government agencies right now, when there are missions other than what the agents are sworn to do, and in this instance to protect the protectee, it takes away the
10:11 am
focus from what truly matters. i know the fbi, there was an issue with dei. i've heard the simile thing for many people at the secret service, as well. they are more focused on the diversity of those that they hire rather than the quality of those that are performing the mission. >> sandra: nicole, to your point, the secret service agents put on leave, one from the trump personal protective team. for those keeping track, four from the pittsburgh office, including the special agent in charge there. james comer who, as we know, has issued subpoenas, they been trying to get to the bottom of this and have some accountability for all of this. he said this on those agents being put on leave. they must be accountability at the secret service for its historic failures that led to the attempted assassination of president trump. holding negligent employees accountable as a first step. i look forward to the task force findings of its investigation. we must ensure the secret service does not fail again. how do we make sure that does not happen, nicole? that we learn from this and that we improve the secret service.
10:12 am
>> again, it comes down to the quality of those you are hiring and it comes to leadership at the top and the leadership on every single level in the organization. so i would say all of these agencies, specifically the secret service, who are entrusted to protect someone -- in this instance, president trump -- your number one focus is on the mission of protection. it is not on diversity. when you are getting all of these outside distractions, it takes you away from what your true job is, and i do put that on the shoulders of the leadership although at the top of the secret service, of the fbi, and all these of agencies. it would be my number one thing. get back to what you're supposed to do. hold people accountable, and sadly, sandra, i wouldn't be surprised if these types of errors had occurred on other rallies previous to this one. it's just that this one, the cracks showed. the vulnerabilities were very apparent, because it was a bad luck day for president trump and for those that attended, and really for corey, who lost his life. a citizen lost his life. sadly, i think the sloppiness in
10:13 am
this agency is not anything particularly new. it may have been occurring many times, it's just that they got lucky. the vulnerabilities were not exposed. but i will defend, there are outstanding secret service agents. they are outstanding leaders at the secret service, as well. we don't want to make a blanket same it for everybody. that would be unfair and not appropriate. there are people that jumped on president trump to save his life. so we honor those individuals. those that are not performing their jobs up to par, you need to go, and they need to be accountability. until there's accountability, nothing changes. >> sandra: i think it's fair to say the former president showed a lot of grace, to your point about those that have done their jobs. he said this. final fight after this. >> i had great respect for secret service. the job they do, including a month and a half ago when they were jumping on top of me with bullets flying right at them. mistakes were made, and they're going to learn from the mistakes. >> sandra: so critical of the decisions that were made that dn
10:14 am
very gracious towards those who risk their own lives to protect him. final thought, nicole? >> i agree. president trump is extremely gracious, and that is who he is. he knows the good individuals of the secret service had protected him, and president trump cares. you want to support them. he supports law enforcement, he backs the blue, he supports the secret service, frankly. again, individuals need to be held accountable. leadership, you need to give your agents proper technology, proper training, proper resources. hiring the best quality individuals out there. you need to lead by example. >> sandra: nicole parker, thank you very much for joining us on that. we will see where it all goes next. john, there are those demanding more credibility marketability. james comer is one of them, saying this is just the first step. chris swecker, it is interesting, he joined "the faulkner focus" earlier and he said they were on sale for 90 seconds. the former president was on stage 90 seconds after the first shot was fired. he called it amateur. if this was a professional assassination attempt or even a reasonably competent individual, they would have taken him out on
