the middle east, where overnight, israel's defense forces say they preemptively struck several hezbollah targets in lebanon in retaliation, there were several rockets from hezbollah in lebanon that actually made their way into israel. good morning everybody. i'm kevin corke in washington. hey, good morning, kevin and i'm chanley painter in new york. the idf claims the iran backed group was preparing to fire missiles, thousands of them, and rockets towards the israeli territory. as we know, tensions have been rising in the region for weeks after the assassination of a senior hamas leader and a top hezbollah military commander were killed in separate attacks in iran. channel blames israel for both deaths, though israel has only claimed responsibility for the death of the hezbollah commander. now, this is also happening, as you and i have discussed overnight ceasefire and hostage talks are ongoing between israel and hamas. u.s.
2:02 am
officials, meantime, are hoping that a ceasefire might in fact, calm tensions in the region. we want to welcome fox news correspondent jeff paul. he is in israel for us. and jeff, we've had many conversations overnight. i'm curious, as day has obviously broken where you are. how are things looking and sounding at this hour and what, if anything, jeff, can you tell us about the ongoing meeting of the security council there? well, kevin, there's definitely a sense of heightened sense of tension in the air. people are going about their daily lives somewhat normally here in tel aviv, but there is this feeling of tension in the air, not knowing what could happen next. and that has a big part to do with this escalation that happened early this morning between israeli forces and hezbollah. an escalation that we have not seen at this proportions for a very long time. so israel has put this entire country under an emergency situation for the next 48 hours, as it has to wait and watch to see what
2:03 am
hezbollah plans to do if they plan to, you know, have another phase of attacks or if this was enough. now, we all know this started early this morning local time. israel launched a wave of airstrikes targeting hezbollah infrastructure using roughly 100 fighter jets. this was a preemptive strike after israeli intelligence received information that hezbollah was mounting a massive attack on israel. hezbollah then fired upwards of 320 rockets and drones, all mostly targeting northern israel. local media is reporting hezbollah had plans to launch an estimated 6000 rockets and uavs, both towards central and northern israel. now, previously, hezbollah had referred to what happened early this morning as the, quote, first phase. hezbollah has since released a statement saying, in part, all offensive drones were launched at their designated times from all their positions. thus, our military operation for today has been completed and accomplished. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, also reacting to the
2:04 am
escalation, saying in part, we are determined to do everything we can to protect our country, return the residents of the north safely to their homes and continue to uphold a simple rule. whoever hurts us, we hurt them. now, the white house also put out a statement saying president biden is closely monitoring the events in israel and lebanon at his direction. senior u.s. officials have been communicating continuously with israeli counterparts. we will keep supporting israel's right to defend itself, and we will keep working for regional stability. a big part of that stability could really take place today in cairo, egypt. that's where israel is still planning on sending a delegation there for the latest round of ceasefire negotiations the u.s, qatar and egypt. they have been working at this for weeks trying to get this deal across the line. u.s. officials say israel has agreed to a bridging proposal. so far, hamas has not. and a big part of that has to do with the presence of israeli troops, how
2:05 am
long they will stay in gaza once this war comes to an end, if it does. kevin. jeff, thank you for that. i want to welcome chanley painter into the conversation. chanley you were saying earlier that this isn't just about what happened today. this is about what could happen over the next 48 hours or so. exactly. kevin and let's talk to jeff some about that, because, again, the cease fire talks so important as far as what we will see coming up. jeff, what is your take? we know that the iran and hezbollah have been threatening retaliation for the assassination of those leaders for now weeks. why was yesterday the time why now? was that important? was it lack of progress for ceasefire talks or sending a message? what is your take from what you're hearing? i mean, all of it's speculation, but it could be quite the opposite that progress is being made. one person here on the ground who's very familiar with the situation in israel, told me
2:06 am
that maybe the sides are starting to get close, that a deal is coming closer and closer than it's ever been. and hezbollah or israel decided maybe this was their last opportunity to get in a few shots before the cease fire deal, and presumptively a peace deal goes into effect. so the deal could be closer than it's ever been. it also could be falling apart. you know, they really haven't said too much about what's going on in cairo or in qatar, but it could be one of those situations where it's getting so close. and because hezbollah and iran have both said that a peace deal is the only thing holding them back from attacking israel, well, if there's a peace deal, it would put them in a very bad light. if they then attacked after that cease fire, agreement went into effect. so some of it could be timing, some of it could just be frustration. hezbollah, you know, probably has a lot of people to answer to supporters, and they want to show a bit of strength. but i would say, on the contrary, israel showed a lot of strength as well, being that they had not only the intelligence but the physical know how to get in there and disrupt what could have been a
2:07 am
massive attack. that's right. and jeff, speak a little bit about a couple of the hang ups in those ceasefire negotiations. you mentioned earlier in the evening or the morning in the reporting, including the philadelphi corridor and others that may be holding up an actual cease fire at this point. well, we always see issues when it comes to think of gaza and you kind of cut it in half, almost. there is a corridor there called the netzarim corridor, and that is strategic for israel, because they can sort of control travel between the north and the south of gaza. the other one would be the philadelphia corridor, and that's strategic because it's right there on the egyptian gaza border. and israel maintains this is how all the weapons, all the rockets, all
2:08 am
the things that are used against israel get into gaza. so if they don't have troops there, hamas is just going to be able to reload during a moment of peace or cease fire and then start doing the same thing that happened on october seventh again. but hamas and egypt both oppose the presence of israeli troops there in gaza, whether it be the netzarim corridor or the philadelphia corridor. so we'll have to see if they can find some sort of middle ground as these negotiations continue. that's certainly key. one more question for you, jeff, before i toss it back to kevin for more. but we are reading reports with this preemptive strike with hezbollah striking towards israel. we're only really seeing of at least one death in southern lebanon from one of the strikes. what are you seeing and hearing considering the massive scale upwards of 6000 missiles or whatnot, only one life loss as we know of right now, that seems pretty significant. jeff
2:09 am
it's still early in the day. and again, i mean that that number 6000 that was reported by local media, that's what they were saying, that they had the ability to do or were planning to do. that's obviously not what happened. there was nowhere near 6000 rockets or uavs launched, roughly a couple hundred, 320. but it certainly is a huge escalation, especially considering the day to day back and forth that we see right there on the israel-lebanon border. we get almost a daily alerts on our phones about drones or rockets being fired or israel targeting what they call hezbollah infrastructure in lebanon. so it will be interesting to see if we hear this press conference or this speaking engagement from nasrallah, the leader of hezbollah, what he has to say, and if there is some sort of differentiation between what happens almost on a daily basis and this massive attack that happened early this morning here in israel, certainly. correct. kevin, i'll send it
2:10 am
over to you for more questions for jeff. but i am anxious to see what nasrallah does have to say later today. kevin. yeah, that should be interesting because again, i think you both have had this part of the conversation where you talked about this need to demonstrate strength. that is part of the lexicon. that's part of the culture of the region. and certainly we would anticipate that there will be lots of proclamations. jeff, correct me if i'm wrong from nasrallah to say, listen, we did exactly what we intended to do. we reserved the right to do more. but i think you nailed it earlier when you talked about this as being a possible off ramp to avoid perhaps a wider conflict. am i getting that right, jeff? yeah, and it's something. if you remember, we saw in april when there was this back and forth between iran, when iran fired upwards of 300 rockets, missiles and drones at israel, and then
2:11 am
israel retaliated by basically getting really close to one of their key nuclear facilities. and sending the message that we could get closer next time and we can do this all day long. and that was sort of the off ramp they were given to iran that like we didn't hit it, but we sure got close and we could we could get closer next time. so maybe this is an opportunity for hezbollah to say we got our shots in. let's wait and see what happens with the cease fire deal. obviously, an escalation like this is not going to help this very delicate process, but there could be some sort of separation here. there could be some sort of off ramp as you mentioned, that hezbollah got its shots in it appears we haven't heard of any major reports of casualties or damage here in israel, at least. so we'll have to wait and see, especially we'll have to wait and see what language is used by both sides as well. yeah, that should make that those comments very interesting. if i could get the booth to pop this up by chance, israel did make a
2:12 am
statement on x in effect saying that, listen, we're going to do whatever we need to do to protect our citizens. and certainly they not only reserved the right to do that. in fact, let me share. well, this is actually from the idf. it said about 100 idf fighter jets struck and eliminated thousands of hezbollah rocket launcher barrels aimed for immediate fire toward northern and central israel. more than 40 hezbollah launch areas were struck and then, of course, they went on to say, listen, we're going to do all we can in our power to protect the people of israel. now this is from israel, the state itself, saying the minister talked about the foreign minister emphasized that israel is acting to protect its citizens and territory against the axis of evil led by iran, which is a declared goal of bringing about israel's destruction. jeff, i wanted to touch on that because people will hear names like hamas. they will hear names
2:13 am
like hezbollah. they'll hear about groups like the houthis, but if i'm understanding it correctly, this is just iran by any other name. well, certainly when it comes to hezbollah, most, if not all of their weaponry, their rockets, their missiles, their drones, they're all coming from iran. and in a sense, if you talk to some people there doing the work of iran and that's why it was very curious when israel hit targets, both high level targets, top commanders both in iran and within hezbollah, to see if they would have a response that was unified together, launched together, or if they would go at it alone. iran has faced a lot of pressure, especially from the u.s. and other western leaders, to back down cooler heads prevail. and so far it appears iran is listening to that. hezbollah obviously has taken a different route. we'll have to see if this is just one phase or the first of many in the
2:14 am
coming hours. can i ask one more thing here before we send it back over to channel? i just noticed in my notes that turkey is also involved in having conversations about what has transpired over the last 24 hours. what, if anything, should i make from, from that? well, turkey always kind of finds itself in an interesting situation. being a member of nato and obviously having close relations with other countries here in the middle east. they've been pretty outspoken about israel's war in gaza. so they are a bit of a wild card when it comes to foreign policy. so, you know, they they do carry weight. what they say their, their leadership there definitely does carry some weight. but i think the biggest focus today is going to be on what hassan nasrallah has to say, the language he uses, how he views, how successful last night was and then beyond that,
2:15 am
what israel does moving forwar. charnley take it from here. sure. kevin, i do want to follow up with jeff, a couple of questions. as far as the language hezbollah was using, as done for today, is it typical for a terrorist group or an enemy to say, okay, we're done for today. you can you can rest. we're not going to send any more strikes over. how significant is that language as well as the language they used earlier of this is the first phase of retaliation. jeff i'm not going to lie. it was a little surprised to see that statement today when our producer handed me that and said, you know, they issued a statement saying they're done for today. but we both talked. and i want to emphasize to our viewers, again, that key word is today. and that's why we're waiting for hassan nasrallah to make comments. because, you know, maybe he says something like, we're done for now. but, you know, in the future things will happen. i mean, you got to think, if they were to respond
2:16 am
again within the next 24 hours, it might be sort of it could be considered a waste of their resources, especially after getting hit. so hard by israel. and now with israel at its highest preparation and the u.s. watching so closely with so many assets in the region, it would seem almost like a waste of what resources they have left. but, you know, they're hezbollah and we're not. so we have no idea what they're thinking at this point. that is certainly true. who knows? at this point, you mentioned biden in the white house closely monitoring the situation. of course, we know lloyd austin was on the phone with israeli leadership in the early morning hours after this preemptive attack. the u.s. closely interested, obviously, jeff, in what's happening and what happens next, especially considering the ceasefire talks will continue in egypt today. so again, the importance of the united states role in this. can you speak to that a little bit? we only have a couple minutes left with you, but i want to give you that time. well,
2:17 am
secretary of state antony blinken was just here. he had quite the tour of the region. he made stops here in israel. he was in qatar. he was in egypt. and pretty much at every stop, he had a similar thing to say. and you can kind of see it in his face just how serious he was, he said. israel has agreed to a bridging proposal. it's time for hamas to get to the table. let's get this deal done and get it done. now. he also mentioned the suffering that's going on in gaza, as well as the hostages that need to come out. both of those things can be true at the same point. you can have empathy for the people who are suffering in gaza, who have nothing to do with this war and are caught in the crossfire, as well as have a sympathy for the hostages and the innocent people who were taken back on october 7th. and i think you can see that in all the statements, especially from, you know, vice president kamala harris during the dnc, she made the same point that we need to get the hostages home, and we need to get the suffering to end in gaza. certainly a huge point of reference for the u.s. and it's important to keep that in perspective. thank you. jeff. paul, kevin, i'm going to toss it to you now as we are running
