>> ainsley: good morning, it's 7:00 a.m. on the east coast. it's wednesday, august 28th. this is "fox & friends." kamala harris finally agrees to her first formal interview since taking over as democratic nominee, but she won't be alone. she is doing it with her running mate. does she need backup for moments like these? >> you need to get to go and need to be able to get where you need to go. >> the significance of the passage of time. so, when you think about it, there is great significance to the passage of time. >> ainsley: john roberts and sarah huckabee sanders gave us their take. >> steve: we know what your take is, viewers. meanwhile, inflation killing the american dream, and the american dream of retirement. we're going to give you the outrageous amount it is now costing your family to live comfortably as more americans are forced to work later in life and not retire. >> brian: plus, talk about a comeback, oak students wave the

[laughter] so once president biden wraps up his two week vacation. he will join his vice president in pittsburgh for an event on labor day. it will be their first joint event since she accepted the democratic nomination. >> ainsley: meanwhile the harris and trump campaigns are getting back on the campaign trail with stops in key swing states. peter doocy live at the white house. peter? >> and the hairs campaign thinks that with president biden off

the ticket, they have georgia back in place. so, they have not designed this bus tour that starts today with the vice president and governor walz just to try to run up the score in atlanta where democrats typically do very well. >> they are going to be in more rural parts of the say. politico says they are trying to mirror the playbook that helped raphael warnock and jon ossoff win in georgia in 2021. the republican ticket traditional battleground states. president trump is going to be in michigan and wisconsin tomorrow. j.d. vance in pennsylvania and wisconsin and he has a particular focus on the way kamala harris is moving to the middle on everything from healthcare tet economy, to the border. >> i read a story this morning that her advisers are considering just copying all of donald trump's policies. navy suit, a long red tie and adopt the slogan "make america great again." >> peter: we learned last night that the harris campaign does plan to deploy president biden on monday for the traditional start of the post labor day sprint to the election. is he going to be there alongside the vice president and pittsburgh is a place we have been to with president biden a lot. he has a lot of union bosses there that the harris campaign thinks oh, president biden a lot of favors. he has been invisible for weeks. even though he is the current president. back to you. >> steve: peter, it sounds like the campaign, the kamala harris campaign usage of joe biden, the current president, is they want to use him in states like pennsylvania where he can help them with older white voters. >> peter: so it seems like they are going to use president biden the way that he was being used before, which is just to go to

pittsburgh and probably philadelphia the most. >> peter: i think that's probably right. all right, peter, thank you very much. meanwhile the campaign apparently also wants to wheel out tim walz to various union states and localities because he is very prounion and apparently the labor leaders love to have him. >> ainsley: we knew kamala's campaign kept saying she is going to do an interview by the end of this month. which would be this weekend. she did -- she is granting an interview to dana bash. and she is going to have that interview tomorrow. they are going to tape it during the day and then air it tomorrow night. >> brian: so that will be -- it will be interesting. their first sitdown why they have to do it together is interesting. more of a cushion and more questions. why do you need him there. and if you want to wonder if there is a template, j.d. vance, i think, has made two appearances with president trump. they have been separated. j.d. vance hasn't had a day off, i don't think. the president has two days where he did an interview with dr. phil yesterday and goes back on the trail tomorrow and then he does another rally on friday.
4:06 am
j.d. vance has been nonstop since. they don't need each other. did you watch j.d. vance on the sunday show on sunday. >> lawrence: again? >> brian: kristen welker relentless. he is 39 years old. 40 years old now. just met president trump. is he comfortable talking about president trump's policies. why is tim walz not comfortable talking about the last three and a half years. >> ainsley: might be kamala is not comfortable. >> brian: she makes him be more comfortable. she. >> ainsley: she does the word salad and he jumps in. >> lawrence: makes her look weak. even joe biden didn't have kamala harris saving him and he was full of word salads and gaffes. look, i just think this is going to be a critical interview because dana bash is going to have to puck back on blatant flip-flops and lies coming out of the harris campaign. family member came to me and said lawrence, when you interview the former president
4:07 am
again you ask him why he wants to cancel medicare and medicaid? i go where are you getting it from? it's the harris campaign putting that stuff out on social media. it's a lie. it's been debunked multiple times. but it keeps going out there. >> ainsley: in fact, he doesn't want to tax your social security. >> brian: ever sit around the table with your extended family sometimes being that they do other things for a living and hear. so things that they say. i spend the whole time going i never heard that i never heard that. ask them where you heard it from. i saw it on facebook. where were you? we grew up in a time what you read in the paper you believed. this i read this online. i read this online. no, i have never heard that i spend the whole time going yeah, i don't know where that came from. >> lawrence: every family is going through that same exact scenario. >> brian: misinformation. ai is here now. looks like they are actually saying it. so, you know, when you are around the table. the number one issue, according to the polls, is the economy and inflation, right? but people at home don't talk
4:08 am
about inflation and the economy. they talk about things are not affordable. and that is one of the things. >> brian: my family talks macroeconomics. >> steve: i'm sure they do. and micro. that's one of the reasons, presumably by the kamala harris campaign has said she will make things more affordable. that's in her ad that we ran yesterday. so, tonight, dana bash or rather tomorrow when she talks to kamala harris, danna barb needs to say okay, you're going to do it. how are you going to make more affordable living for americans because she has been so light on details. and we understand why they want to do it. the broader you are, the legislation likely you are to alienate somebody. >> lawrence: the question is what kamala harris shows up? is it a new improved kamala harris or is it this kamala harris? >> do you have any plans to visit the border? >> i'm here in guatemala today. at some point, you know -- we are going to the border.
4:09 am
we have been to the border. so this whole -- this whole -- this whole thing about the border we have been to the border. we have been to the border. >> you haven't been to the border. >> and i haven't been to europe. [laughter] and i mean i don't understand the point that you're making. >> so what else are you going to do to fix this problem with inflation? >> thank you. well, let's start with this. prices have gone up. and families and individuals are dealing with the realities of -- of -- that bread costs more, that gas costs more. and we have to understand what that means. that's about the cost of living going up. >> you need to get to go and need to be able to get where you need to go. >> brian: biden-harris administration. so she is going to talk about oil and gas. i'm not against fracking and she is going to talk about i'm not for ev mandates.
4:10 am
but just look at what they be doing. do you know if what they did yesterday the biden-harris administration bars drilling on 2800 acres of public lands over in alaska. really? if you talk to senator sullivan, dan sullivan over in alaska or murkowski, they have totally destroyed the oil and gas industry. they are reversing everything president trump did including anwar which was supposed to be excavated and explored. they can stop all of it. say whatever you want. look at the actions. people of pennsylvania, there's a reason why l and g is not thriving right now, because you are on a pause, thanks to president biden, to kiss up to green portion of his party. he has put lng leases on pause and excavation. >> lawrence: keep saying the biden-harris administration. i don't know if you read politico yesterday. but they make the point that donald trump campaign and j.d. vance keep trying to tether vice president kamala harris to joe biden. as if she is not the vice president. >> brian: it's not the former vice president.
4:11 am
>> they are trying to tether them together. >> steve: it looks like they will be tethered together and they are tim walz governor of minnesota and also kamala harris. when they are interviewed by dana bash tomorrow. we had bill mcgurn on about 45 minutes ago from the "wall street journal." and this is his observation about how much emphasis is being put on this one single interview. >> i suspect he's also there to find out what kamala harris believes. you know, he probably has no idea like the rest of us. and this is ridiculous that we're all excited about one interview? i mean, this isn't the vatican where the pope, you know, takes his time and decides whether to give you an audience. she is supposed to be out there every day. she wants the top job. >> brian: that's what marc thiessen said too why is this a
4:12 am
big event? trump just sat down with dr. phil for an hour. j.d. vance did two poll sides with fox and did half hour on meet the press with kristen welker. and then you have this major event, which i think might be a marching band there, too. just to introduce. >> steve: if it was on "fox & friends" we would have a marching band. >> ainsley: so embarrassing, isn't it? he is right, the media all day long today is going to say she is doing an interview. she is doing an interview. y'all can't say that anymore. is he absolutely right. all the republicans are -- donald trump has been on fox a lot. he has been on other networks a lot. he did that podcast with the famous podcaster. he did elon musk on x for two hours. dr. phil. >> lawrence: i wonder if there are going to be notes for this interview. one of the big sticking points apparently to many solve the report guiltying is that she wanted notes for the presidential debate. why does she need notes to get on the presidential debate stage and debate the policy day to day? because she is not prepared.
4:13 am
>> brian: i'm not sure jason miller said that but i thought he said there was some speculation. >> steve: jacqui heinrich sent out a note do you live of us regarding the muted mics that, is ongoing conversation with abc. so apparently while the trump side says that is a done deal apparently it is not. >> brian: it was trump that said that. >> steve: jacqui said it is 100 percent false that harris wanted to use notes as we have heard. >> brian: can i say one thing? bill maher should be giving credit he said she should do interviews. how can you sit with vladimir putin if you are not going to do interviews. >> ainsley: how about the report from axios two days ago saying our campaign says we might not have time to release policies. >> steve: takes so long to come up with a policy you should know what you are for. that's why it's going to be really important. we are all going to be watching. we will on friday morning talk about what she said and we will go through the list. what did she say about this, this, and this, to see how different it is. >> brian: we have to elect her
4:14 am
to find out what she will do. >> ainsley: then she will release the policy. >> steve: meanwhile, let's talk a little bit about this. once upon a time it was all about the american dream. >> brian: is this going to be a long story? [laughter] >> steve: no, it's not. the american dream was to, what? get married have a couple of kids, except for dawn, apparently, and. >> lawrence: shot right back at you. >> steve: do you know how much the dream of the american -- the cost of the american dream was 10 years ago. the average american said i'm going to need $130,000 to achieve the american dream. now, it is almost $140,000. >> and also, yeah. so now it's up to 178. >> lawrence: up 36%. >> brian: my dream would just be go through august without the heat being on, again. what the hell just happened? >> ainsley: what are you talking about? it's facing that way. it's my heater. >> brian: some is bouncing off steve's chin at my face. i'm getting a cloud of heat.
4:15 am
it reminds me of hawaii where the cost of the american dream is extremely high, lawrence. >> lawrence: looks like $260,000 if you want the american dream there got california, 245,000. massachusetts 242,000. wisconsin 209,000. and new jersey where steve lives $207,000. >> ainsley: used to be that people could retire, what? was it 62 and then they increased it. >> steve: you still can you can retire whenever you want. >> brian: just live in poverty. >> ainsley: 82% say they are now considering delaying their retirement. work longer than they plan. 39% fear not enough having enough money stashed away. >> steve: i was looking into this day. 61% of people fear retirement more than death. and to your point, brian, the worry is you could retire any time you want to, but you live in poverty. people wait until the social security kicks in. that is the number one worry that i'm going to retire and then i'm going to run out of money.
4:16 am
>> brian: here comes inflation all of a sudden and if you put social security with inflation, it sounds good and but it's not practical because it just destroys the deficit like you do lori lightfoot did as mayor of chicago. she puts -- she puts wages tettered to inflation. which is bankrupting that city. >> steve: if there is a cost of living adjustment, if the cola is 2%, to increase your social security 2%. but inflation goes up 4%. or, you know, a year and a half ago it was at 9% and you are getting a 2% cola you are going the wrong way. >> brian: trump should be talking about this. >> lawrence: are these people experiencing joy? because if you are on the other side. [laughter] lawrence i dealt with this for a whole week of joy in chicago. everything is going well with the country. >> brian: you needed three days off. >> steve: joy to the world. >> lawrence: over the weekend i had to be deprogrammed after all the nonsense.

[laughter] and that is -- i don't know if she was surveyed. that's her number one fear. >> ainsley: you'll be home. >> brian: what do you mean you? are not going back? you're done? >> steve: my wife kathy says you know you are happier when you are working. >> brian: you are happier when you are working. >> steve: she is right. i'm happy. >> brian: what are we doing today? >> steve: we are doing the news. >> ainsley: i think you spend more time here during the day than do you at home, right? >> brian: i am doing outnumbered today. >> ainsley: is that why dawn opened the store? >> brian: in case i come home early. >> ainsley: turning now to headlines, sources tell rioters
