cease-fire and hostage release deal as a massive labor strike causes a stand still at businesses, schools, and israel's largest airport. trey yingst is live in tel aviv with the latest. trey? >> yeah, hey, guys. good morning. demonstrations erupted across israel overnight after the country's health ministry announced that six israeli hostages had been executed in hamas captivity. we know how to sands of people blocked the main highway in israel's second largest city of tel aviv, clashes unfolded between police and protesters with security forces bringing horses and water canons to clear the road. the demonstrators demanded their government reach a hostage agreement and bring the remaining captives in gaza home. take a look. >> there are clear disagreements between israeli leadership. between israel's defense ministerio lava gallant and the country's prime minister benjamin netanyahu, for people here in the streets of tel aviv, they are not interested in politics. they are not interested in what the government has to say unless

it is bringing the hostages home. >> to me, we do know that we want a deal now because those people supposed to be home yesterday. >> trey: the unrest about the hostages shifted to civil protests with a broad strike announced today. israel's international airport was on strike for two hours this morning affecting incoming and outgoing flights. other transportation affected as well including jerusalem's light rail train with frustration growing across israel about the lack of a deal, president biden will meet with vice president harris in the situation room later today. to meet with the american negotiating team. officials in washington will look for a way to move the cease-fire talks forward. giving both israel and hamas an exit ramp to end the war. the uncertainty about gaza comes as israel launched fresh strikes against the reign-backed group nez southern lebanon overnight. the war inside gaza has been ongoing for 332 days and at this point diplomacy has failed. guys? >> lawrence: you know, trey, you have relationships in the hamas

in the sense of reporting. before october the 7th. you were embedded in there have you talked with some of the members there. they have even presented with you a powerpoint. i guess my question to you is, after reading everything, after hearing from some of your sources denying october the 7th. do you find the hamas officials to be honest brokers in this negotiation? >> lawrence, the short answer is no. and, look, pete made a great point earlier. israel is not negotiating with a rational, reasonable actor. hamas is an organization that is controlled the gaza strip since 2006. stipulate it's very splintered and there is really one man at the very top. the mastermind behind the october 7th massacre. the other two master minds are dead. as the israelis move forward with these conversations, they are getting feedback from hamas indirectly as part of these negotiations and they are unable to find a path forward and at the same time, critics of israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu say that he doesn't want a deal under the current

terms. and so, we're at an impasse here in the region. and negotiators, not just from the united states, but also from qatar and from egypt say they are reaching really the last ends of these efforts and at this point, there has been no breakthrough in the talks. >> pete: trey, sticking of with hamas, we had a father of one of the american hostages there come on the program. obviously he wants a deal. he wants it yesterday to get his son back. but he also said that part of the reason he is for it is that hamas has been completely disseminated as fighting force and that's the consensus among israeli intelligence officials. if that deal were cut, how disseminateside hamas at this point? >> trey: it is true. most of the hamas brigades inside gaza have been destroyed and dismantle dismantled since the israeli ground campaign since it started in late october. hamas will always be a fighting force gaza and west bank insurgency if there are other

forces around if they decide they want to attack. the west intank perfect example. hamas doesn't control vast areas of territory in the west bank. but they launch daily attacks whether it be attempted bombings or shooting attacks. you will see the same thing inside gaza. they won't have the same fighting force that they had on the morning of october 7th when they were able to send trained brigades of fighters across the border. thousands of them into southern israel. but they still will be able to launch attacks. there is a controversy inside israel and it has to do with the benchmark that the israeli government has set for the goals of this country inside gaza. there were two goals laid out by the prime minister. one bring the hostages home, and, two, defeat and destroy hamas. the second goal is not possible. they can dismantle the brigades that exist inside the gaza strip but continue to attack israel in some capacity. >> to that point what ratio of those protesters there are

saying look. we don't want a deal. to the point of everyone has been saying deal with the devil. we actually aren't protesting to negotiate with terrorists. we are here advocating for the return of our hostages. and we want militarily a global support. demonstrators that were in the streets of tel aviv last night and into today represent a portion of this society. there are certainly people especially in the la cued party party supportive of benjamin netanyahu there should be no cease-fire and risk of hostages. part of the divide currently in israeli society and not at the civilian level at the very top of the israeli government there have been screaming matches in the cabinet between israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu and his defense ministerio lava gallant it has

germany's right wing fad party elections took part in the eastern part of the country. afd stands for the alternative for germany, this group was formed in 2013, winning almost 1/3 of the votes in the state yesterday. this is the first time that a right wing party won a state parliament election since world war ii. so, on top thundering thuringia. three party make up the government. democrats, environmentalist greens and free democrats. all of them suffering significant losses. today, german chancellor olaf scholz called this a bitter loss and urged mainstream party to form governments without, quote, right wing extremists. this week's result show dissatisfaction inflation, economy, calls for military

anti-semitic slurs. and even physical violence. columbia university student elisha baker joins us now. alicia, good to have you again. i mean, i can just think of any group, if you replace jewish student with x group that was spit on, forced out, chased out. there would be outrage, right? >> yeah. i mean, the double standard is glaring. and the truth is reading the report, it's hard to imagine that at this point 11 months later, we could still be shocked again by what we're reading. and, yet, that's how i felt when i was reading it. the truth is that this is an issue that's not only about jewish students. because what this report demonstrates is that the university is failing to uphold its end of the sacred covenant between university and students, which is namely, to ensure a safe and healthy and productive learning environment for all

students. so if they are failing with jewish students, it means they are failing at their fantastic. by the way, of course, on the other side, students must uphold their end of the covenant which is, you know, to engage with peers and to include peers in discussions. so i'm hoping as we come back, that we can return to those values and make sure that power is exercised for the sake of those values. >> lawrence: let's read some of the stuff that the task force as we play some of the footage of morons dancing in the middle of the street as if it's the west bank and keffiyeh. this is the what task force said the painful and distressing incident of anti-semitism recounted in this report completely unacceptable. work has already been underway on an initiative that aligned with the number of the recommendations. outlined in this report. so, i guess the question is, going back to campus, do you feel safe? do you feel like they are going to get volume of this before you hit the campus?
