>> kevin: 51 after. time for fox weather. a line of severe thunderstorms from the great lakes to the northeast may end up crossing on this labor day. let's find out more with adam klotz, he has the forecast for us. >> we're tracking storms sweeping across the country. a cold front. you can see colder air on the northern half of the country where the rain has passed by. warmer on the southern half of the country and see a little shower activity. for your forecast today chicago 73, 76 in minneapolis. still hot in the mountain west and it is now really the southern united states that is containing a whole lot of those larger storms. you've seen it pop up here every afternoon. hot, humid, sticky, feels like summer even though it's the unofficial end of summer. a lot of the rain will work its way across texas. they will see a lot of rain and flooding could be a concern. that ultimately could slow down

and last year and what it says about our economy. >> more people are traveling this holiday season. like every holiday weekend we set another record. hotels are full. planes are full. record numbers of people are flying through the airports. taking to the roads especially this weekend. people are staying in hotels. but there is about 200,000 less hotel workers than there were pre-pandemic so that's kind of what is causing this whole strike. >> julie: labor day travel is up 9%. you mention about the lower number of hotel workers. also the lower service. you check into a hotel nowadays and paying resort fees or service fees to these hotels. they no longer, many of them no longer have room service, for example. you cannot order food. i don't know what services we're paying for. how is it that people are affording these prices? the prices have gone up and service has gone down and the

employees have gone down. morale has been at an all-time low in the travel industry. >> i could go on forever about resort fees and destination fees and all these other things that you are paying $40 or $50 a night for nothing. it drives me insane. in terms of workers, as you mentioned when you check into a hotel oftentimes they will give you an option of not having your room cleaned every day or won't do it. that's because they are saying they are trying to save the environment or cut down on waste or whatever it might be. the truth is they are just trying to save money because they furloughed a lot of workers during the pandemic and either haven't brought them back or brought them back at a lower hourly amount. people are making less money. generally women, minorities, black and hispanic minority women make up 90% of hotel workers and housekeepers and so they want to have higher wages
6:56 am
and more hours and basically get back to pre-pandemic hours guaranteed with more money. >> julie: the hotel workers statement. during covid everyone suffered but now the hotel industry is making record profits while workers and guests are left behind. many can no longer afford to live in the cities they welcome guests to and painful workloads are breaking their bodies. 24 hotels, 200,000 workers in eight cities. it is so unfair but there is no regulation. these hotels can charge whatever the heck they want. people will be paying resort fees that are ridiculous. what will make this stop? what will improve the situation? >> well, the unions have actually done a pretty decent job of getting workers better, you know, job conditions especially like here in los angeles where i am. last year there were strikes.
