allysia: the boeing starliner has returned to worth without its crew, nasa decided it would be unsafe to put crewmembers back on the spacecraft due to technical issues. the astronauts will remain in space until february when a space x rocket will bring them home. griff: for more on starliner's returned to earth, former astronaut international space station commander terry virt. it was a rough go, but the landing seemed to go smoothly. on a scale of 1 to 10 how do you give the starliner's landing? >> definitely attend. this was the third test mission and they've had three perfect landings. but a good data they got. it was unfortunate the problems

they had with the small thrusters that weren't even boeing thrusters but billed by a subcontractor, they know what the problem was on reentry, the root thrusters didn't have problems, they got them to function flawlessly. it is a good day for boeing and for nasa. it will be better if the capital is certified. hopefully that happens soon. griff: clearly this had some reputational damage to them when things obviously were not going well and you've got butch and suni stuck until next year. what does this mean for the future of the starliner crowing or the boeing/nasa partnership? >> good question. they wanted this mission to go off and bring their astronauts home which it didn't happen. that was not their plan.

boeing and nasa said they would push forward. how much work is required to make modifications, small level thrusters were overheating and not necessarily failing but not conforming to standards. if they could make a reasonably quick adjustment and prove those thrusters are going to work fine the program will be fine. if this turns into an expensive time-consuming problem we will see. nasa needs a way to get astronauts to the station. they were grounded until a few days ago. they were not able to launch the markets. they were not grounded because of problems they had. space x has its own risks. flying with russians would be not optimum. the european democracy, killing

space station, doing science examines, unpacking partnerships. probably won't do any spacewalks but we will see. they are going through the daily work that astronaut to do and they have another six or seven or 8 months, six months to do that. the problem is their families, they've got families on earth that were planning on them being home for the summer. that didn't happen. planning on them being home for the holidays, lots of changes for the families and the astronauts have fun in space and families take care of business on earth. griff: last question. as we look at the future of missions like this, where does it lead us? >> the future nasa has, the space stations a few hundred miles away from earth. there's a plan to make that private. right now there are four companies building their own
