ideals? >> i don't think she is abandoning her ideals but trying to be pragmatic and what is right in order to win the election. >> bill: that's why they call it live tv. senator sanders suggesting that kamala harris is still just as liberal as ever. how will she explain the reported pivots on the issues? we all wait. hope you had a glorious weekend. a new week begins now. i'm bill hemmer. >> dana: i'm dana perino and this the "america's newsroom." senator sanders reminds me of when the bush campaign found the video of john kerry saying i voted for it before i voted against it and became the thing. yes, trump is trying to define harris as a radical liberal leftist. bernie sanders says let me help you, sir. the vice president is looking to win over skeptical voters tomorrow night as a poll shows president trump leading by one point nationally. suggesting her momentum is
6:02 am
stalling. >> bill: the harris team projecting confidence saying they're exactly where they expected to be at this point. >> our campaign chair put out a memo made it clear the race will be very close. america is a very divided country. we know it will be a very close race. >> bill: senator ted cruz is here live and talk to him about a number of issues. leading the coverage from the white house rich edson begins with us from the north lawn. >> harris maintained her values are the same but she has a new perspective how to fulfill those values. when it comes to fracking and issues like the border that harris has taken trump policy positions or abandoned her own. >> she had the tiebreaking vote on the inflation are you duck shun act. american recovery act that pumped 1.4 trillion into the economy that led to the
6:03 am
inflation. the failed border czar. once you get into her record and the fact she was more liberal in the senate than bernie sanders spells trouble for kamala harris. >> "the new york times" released its latest poll on the election showing 63% of voters want major change from president biden. that 56% of registers she harris representing more of the same. 51% say trump represents major change. 35% say trump is more of the same. liz cheney and her father dick cheney they are voting for harris. she says it is not enough to write in another candidate. republicans need to cast a vote for his opponent. harris says she is happy to have their support. >> i'm honored to have their endorsement and i think that what they both as leaders who
6:04 am
are well respected are making an important statement that it's okay and it's not important to put country above party. and i'm honored to have their support and i think it is an important statement right now. >> after weeks of criticism for a lack of policy proposals, harris now has some policy proposals. a policy page on her campaign website mostly general themes. with some specifics like last week's small business startup tax credit. harris has been in pittsburgh since thursday getting ready for tomorrow night's debate. she told the media she is prepared. >> bill: nice to see you, rich edson. >> dana: senator ted cruz joins us now. great to have you in studio. we knew eventually the sugar high would wear off and now you have this "new york times" poll has democrats nervous. one thing about harris being seen as too liberal. this is amongst likely voters. 47% said yes. you served with her and i'm
6:05 am
curious if you think -- if you agree with bernie sanders that she is progressive. >> on your opening question you got me to say something i've never said before. i agree with bernie sanders. by the way, kamala is right. she says that her values haven't changed. they haven't changed. she has been a hard left vote her entire left. in the senate she showed up in 2017. i served with her for years. 100% of the time she voted hard left. her voting record is to the left of bernie and it is to the left of elizabeth warren. i served with them. it is not easy to get to their left. ain't much space there. kamala happily occupied it. this is someone who, as a senator, when cross examining the head of ice, immigration and customs enforcement compared ice to the ku klux klan. she said people are saying you are like the klan and the head of ice said i don't know what you are talking about. we're law enforcement agents
6:06 am
protecting american citizens. she is people are saying you are just like the klan. that's who she is and bernie is right. there is a reason that the left is not mad at kamala for pretending to run away from all her left wing positions. they know she is pretending. they know it is all about we have to get to election day and if god forbid she gets to the white house she will go back to what she has done her entire left, hard, hard left. >> bill: 29th of august here is how that exchange went on cnn. >> generally speaking, how should voters look at some of the changes that you've made should they feel comfortable and confident that what you are saying now is going to be your policy moving forward? >> dana, i think the most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is my values have not changed. >> bill: i don't know how and if that comes up on tuesday night. if your values are what you believe in, shouldn't your
6:07 am
policies also be what you believe in and vice versa? there should be no distance between the two, if this is what you believe in. it can be far left as long as -- it could be far right as long as you believe it. there should be no space between those two, am i wrong? >> you're absolutely right. there is something more fundamental. what kamala harris is trying to do is bizarre. she is trying to run as the change candidate. she is trying to treat donald trump like he is the incumbent president. and that's utterly disconnected from reality. she is the current administration. and normally the way v.p.s run is they say we did a great job, the president did a great job. let's continue the successes of the administration i was the v.p. in. the problem is, biden and harris, their policy record is a complete train wreck. so you look at her convention speech and the interview, the entire time she is saying well, i would do this to secure the border. well, if you would do that, why
6:08 am
don't you do that? you are in charge right now today and so everything she is saying she would do, the way i would put it is actions speak louder than words. we know what she will do on the border. she has been border czar for four years and had 11 1/2 million people invade the country. we'll know what she will do on energy. she and joe biden have been in charge for four years and waged a war on energy that has driven the cost of gasoline and everything else through the roof. so i hope tomorrow night in the debate that trump really prosecutes her record versus his record. on almost every measure the lives of the american people were much better when trump was president and republican senate and house than they are now under the biden-harris record. >> dana: congress goes back into session, here we go. there is a bill in the house of representatives called the safeguard. safeguard american voter eligibility act.
6:09 am
for short changing it but basically saying that individuals have to provide documentation to prove u.s. citizenship in order to vote in federal election. it's against the law to vote in a federal election if you're an immigrant. this bill is in the house. do you want it to be attached to the spending bill and will it pass? >> i think it absolutely should be attached to the spending bill and go over the speaker of the house, mike johnson is talking about doing that. house conservatives are urging him to do that. senate leadership doesn't want him to. chuck schumer and mitch mcconnell doesn't want him to. mcconnell consistently is afraid of having a fight. what i can say is we've had 11 1/2 million illegal immigrants coming into the country. when they get welfare benefits and government benefits and drivers licenses. right there they are given a voter registration form. right there across the country.
6:10 am
actually a federal law that bill clinton signed into law called motor voter. they are given a voter registration form. it is illegal for them to register to vote but nobody checks. nobody asks are you a citizen. if they fill out the form and register to vote they are handed the form. in the last couple of days the u.s. department of justice is prosecuting a woman in alabama, illegal immigrant who registered fraudulently to vote and voted in two different elections and she is being prosecuted for that. i get this question all the time as i campaign across texas. why would the democrats just open up the border, let in gangs and fentanyl and let in murderers and child molestors. what is their motivation? i think it's simple. they look at 11 1/2 million people and see future democrats. some they think will vote illegally in this coming election. the rest they think will vote once they get control and grant
6:11 am
amnesty and voting rights to all of them. i think the save act is simple common sense that if you are going to vote you should be a u.s. citizen. we want u.s. citizens to vote but we don't want illegal votes. the democrats passionately oppose that and the obvious reason why is -- >> dana: would this be constitutional? >> of course it would. >> bill: tomorrow night trump's job to prosecute the issues you laid out for us today. what sort of prediction do you have? she has been holed up in pittsburgh for a week and she will be ready for this. >> i do a podcast called verdict with ted cruz. today's is entirely a preview of the debate tomorrow night. i break down what trump needs to do and what kamala needs to do. tomorrow night is a big night. this is probably the most consequential day between now and election day. both candidates have a lot to lose. kamala, the one time they let her be unscripted. the campaign team is terrified for her to answer questions. they keep her locked up in joe biden's basement.
6:12 am
she reads from the teleprompter. this debate she can step on land mines. her team is scared. trump, look, what kamala wants to do is get under trump's skin. she wants to make trump look like -- >> harder to do when the mics are muted and could play to both sides either to an advantage or disadvantage. i think frankly the american people are ripped off because of it and no live audience and no reaction. we'll see the same rules we saw in late june and see how it goes. >> what are the odds tomorrow night she says the words i'm speaking? i put it at 100%. >> dana: you are probably right. >> bill: if he doesn't have the opportunity interrupt. >> she will a find a way to say it anyway. she is frustrated and the main reason she wants the mics on because she wants to say i'm speaking. >> dana: it worked to trump's advantage with biden. >> bill: thank you, senator. >> dana: joining the fox news

6:22 am
bill. it was an exercise getting to the bottom of what happened. i took it very seriously. the reason it took so long quite frankly was the first year the democrats were in power, they did nothing. so for two years, i've been serving subpoenas, threatening to hold witnesses like the secretary in contempt to get the documents, to get the testimony that we got to get this report i have today. now, we're not even finished with this investigation. i can tell you it wasn't political at all. the fact is every top general, every intelligence community officer warned against this. and yet the white house had rose colored lenses about what is happening on the ground. the truth was coming up. the truth was manipulated and spun out to the american people that everything is going to be just fine. guess what? it wasn't. you know why? they didn't have a plan.

6:34 am
you can see her there. the latest polls show how important this debate will be. why? because people want to know where kamala harris stands on the main issues. 28% of likely voters say they feel like they need to learn more about kamala harris. only 9% say they want to know more about donald trump before the election. that's according to the new "new york times" polling. the two candidates have been preparing for this debate in very different ways. trump has rallies, town halls, does these interviews all the time. harris has gone 50 days and counting without a formal press conference, okay? she spent the weekend hunkered down in pittsburgh studying but did make a stop at a spice store here. a chain that's infamous for attacking the gop. even offering discounts to celebrate trump's indictments saying reindicted and it feels so good. harris told reporters it is time to unite the country. >> it's time to turn the page on the divisiveness.

6:37 am
that's something that trump should hit really hard on the debate stage. people aren't buying that the vice president of this administration is disconnected from this administration. >> dana: here is another one. which candidate do you think would better do a job of handling the issue that you care about the most? whatever that issue is. trump is at 50%, harris 45, meghan. the other thing is nate silver has the latest probability of winning that includes sunday's poll. trump at 63.8%. last week harris's folks said she is the underdog. is that a position they prefer to be in? >> i think everyone prefers to be the underdog. less expectations. you have a quicker fall from grace when you aren't the underdog. you can't live and die by the polls. when democrats are ahead or behind in the polls. they are a moment, a snapshot in time. the only poll that matters is the one in november. she does have to hit the mark tomorrow and needs to talk about policy and economy and she needs

the moms are paying attention because they run the family budgets and look at things like grocery costs and mortgage and day-to-day costs and the possibility of buying new houses. speaking to those things. the extent to which the reality on the ground runs up against kamala's rhetoric and trump forces it to is how he wins those voters over and says maybe take a look at me. remember what your life was like a couple years ago. >> dana: it will be fascinating. great to have you both on this morning. thank you. >> dana reads sports. >> dana: did you catch this, bill? italian sinner wins the u.s. open taking home his second major of the year.
