quipped back what is debate prep implying that he simply does not need at the could maybe wing it. we know this isn't going to be actual improv. fielding constant questions on the campaign trail has been preparation enough. >> big huge press conferences that are unscripted, questions from many of you. we have had the long form interviews. we have had the shorter poller sides. speeches. town halls. you can't prepare for president trump. there is just no way to do it. imagine like a boxer trying to prepare for floyd mayweather or muhammed ali. >> well, trump is accepting guidance from allies like forger congresswoman democrat tulsi gabbard who shared the debate stage with kamala harris during the 2020 process. >> president trump knows her record. he obviously has a record of success that he can stand on. and he is going to challenge kamala harris on exactly that

and keep reminding voters who she really is, not the actor that she will present herself to be tomorrow night. >> so, other republicans have suggested trump must show restraint, knowing that harris is likely looking for a moment to have trump appear like is he disrespecting her. you know, like a moment like let her speak. let me speak. nikki haley urged the former president and running mate to avoid personal attacks in the future. >> donald trump and j.d. vance need to change the way they speak about women. you don't need to call kamala dumb. she didn't get this far, you know, just by accident. she is here. talk about intelligence or looks or anything else. just focus on 9 policies. >> haley said over this weekend that she would be willing to campaign for her former competitor but says she hasn't been asked as of yet. a lot of republicans are saying trump needs to focus on pressing harris on policies. she only recently released

former president. is he releasing some policy of his own saying that he wants to help seniors on fixed income. promising to, quote: have no taxes on social security benefits so he is releasing some promises of his own there, guys. >> steve: alex, thank you very much. live report from philly. >> lawrence: take a look at peter doocy how kamala harris is preparing. >> peter: vice president harris has some explaining to do if president trump decides to go there. for example, there is this new questionnaire that she filled out in 2019 where she talks about how she wants gender dorance session surgeries for migrants. the exact quote i support policies federal prisoners and detainees are able to obtain necessarily are care for gender transition including surgical care while incarcerated and detained. there is funding cuts to ice. also in 2019. harris wrote our immigration detention system is out of control. and i believe we must end the

whole entire debate strategy hinged on being able to fact-check him in real time. and when they have the mics muted she is not going to be able to do that. in pittsburgh they are trying to figure out how she is supposed to debate when she cannot be jumping in. it's entirely a problem of their own making. the democratic staffers who were working for vice president harris now were working for joe biden. they created these rules. they requested these rules. trump agreed months ago to protect joe biden. she has now bound by them. back to you. >> steve: peter, do we have any idea? are they going to come out and shake hands? >> >> peter: it doesn't seem like it unless there is a spontaneous handshake. because everything is supposed to be the same. and so there was no handshake last time when it was biden and trump. and there was no handshake in nashville or in cleveland in 2020 because of covid.

so, the last handshake on stage at a debate like this would be in 2016 trump and clinton. >> ainsley: peter, media research. >> peter: because they were very friendly. >> ainsley: david muir's conch on abc two candidates conch of kamala harris has been 100 percent positive and of donald trump 93% negative. are you hearing any rules, any comments from abc or how can we ensure that this will be fair? >> it's really -- i know that -- i don't know. i haven't heard anything exactly how the moderators are preparing. a lot like the candidates, they are keeping their preparations quiet. i know that trump was really skeptical going into the cnn debate. and he has had some friendly things to say about jake tapper and dana bash afterwards. we just don't know. a lot of this will be up to kamala harris the things she wants to bring up on stage and donald trump andants to bring u.

how they respond and how the moderators either let him go or just start cutting the mics. >> steve: can't wait. >> brian: thanks. there were a few times when biden or trump would talk they put the mics up. so even though they were supposed to be quiet. hearing something and you would sigh the audio person's mic goes up. and the one reason moderators will come in. two minutes, two minutes is two minutes. whoever asks the questions. three quarters of the questions are about abortion. then you are putting your hand on the scale. if all of it is on the economy. if two thirds is on the economy. you have to say well it's because it's overwhelming the number one issue. i worry about the two minute answers to questions. and then the two-minute rebuttals, then you got this one extra minute for follow ups, clarifications or responses. that's when we find out abc wants to keep that perfect score going. 100 percent positive for kamala harris. and then trump has got to be ready for that mentally, point it out and move. point it out and mo.

>> lawrence: he also has to point to the big dump that was actually just put on in our report from cnn's talking about wanting to end all detention. taxpayer transgender transitions for people here illegally and legally. she wants to end ice detainers with local police. she wants to decriminalize all drugs. >> brian: when was this done? >> lawrence: this was done 2019 in response to the aclu. they released a statement this adviser didn't want to put their name on it. didn't say who it was from. this is what they said that the vice president's position has been shaped by three years of effective governance as part of the biden-harris administration. so, on one hand they have said she said publicly that she has not changed her position. now the campaign that it's been shaped by the administration. so, which one is it? has she changed? or has she not changed? i don't think this statement is going to cut it.

>> steve: it would be impossible for abc not to address the flip-flops or being pragmatic. they are going to talk a little bit about that. but, you know, there is such high risk but high reward on this particular event. because there was one interview 10 days ago. kind of meh. now one debate that we know of and bill mcgurn writes today in the "wall street journal" about this. he says on tuesday night, that's tonight, at the national constitution center in philly, ms. harris and mr. trump will have at it for 90 minutes. ironically, the low exceptions for ms. harris may be an advantage. all she has to do is not humiliate herself and her performance will be hailed as a triumph. if the press corps did its job, we would all know more about what we need to know about kamala harris and what kind of president she would make. but, because it won't, it's all on donald trump to do that job himself. the question is and peter was

trying to forecast what it's going to be like. if the mics are closed, how does he respond to the questions that, perhaps, they don't have from the podium? because the other component is the fact that over the last 72 hours, all of her surrogates have lowered the bar. they are saying, look, donald trump has done seven of these. this is her first. essentially he is the greatest presidential debater ever. so all she has got to do is not humiliate herself and people are going to go hey, that was great. >> ainsley: bill mcgurn goes on to say that these reporters haven't been asking her questions about her policies. he says that reporters haven't insisted that ms. harris answer just basic questions. so the debate tonight might provide the only moment in this election when americans get to see how she performs under pressure. she won't be able to take notes in there. they are going to have to ask her about her flip-flops. will she have the word salads? she has been preparing. the guy standing in for

president trump, we saw that picture of him. he says he has watched 15 republican debates with donald trump. he has watched the first time each debate the whole way through. the second time focusing entirely on the exchanges that he was part of. and then the third time with the sound off to watch donald trump's mannerisms. >> brian: good luck with that. >> steve: there he is right there. >> brian: i love the write up in the "new york times" todays at debate looms trump facing questions about his age and capacity. really? that's it. sometimes when he gives remarks and gives answers to questions. he gets -- he is not as lehr as he could be. they say he misspoke a couple times saying obama said of biden. it's interesting, a woman who really defines the word "qurd salad" is his opponent. given the same speech 25 times. will talking to judge brown over the weekend and been dealing with her for 20 years she gets so lost in some of her answers sometimes they think she has the early onset of dementia and

total fraud. here is the one worry that they have. when you look at the breakdown she is doing better than joe biden. that's what everyone thinks. look at the break down where trump is doing better. it's with older, working class men. joe biden actually had a lead on trump on that. and now she has got -- trump has a 6 point lead on her on that. somehow she has got to reassure seniors in america that she has got -- >> lawrence: people that are typically a part of the democratic fire wall have said they don't know who she is. they don't know anything about her. that's a property whether you have minority voters that are saying that. you are having women voters that are saying the same thing. i mean,. >> ainsley: we know what spices she likes. >> brian: almost like the masked singer. you don't know who it is until the end. are we not going to find out until the end? >> steve: i got a feeling she is going to present a new and improved kamala harris. >> brian: based on. >> steve: based on new stuff to win.

because of -- they just have a different orientation toward women, people of color, lgbtq. they are not ever going to be there. say that's about 30% or something like that. and then of the republicans. and then you have very, very rich people who do not really want to pay taxes or have any regulation of clean air, clean water, any of that. so, every to deal with that now, it's not as many very, very rich people, but it's a lot of money that goes into a campaign. >> brian: she has jazz hands. did i not realize that number two is what a horrible situation to summarize who she thinks the opposing party is so. >> ainsley: out of touch. >> brian: people think she has a problem with president trump. she had a problem day one with president bush. i remember president bush tried to be nice to her and congratulations miss female speaker. she had a attitude day one.

huge problem partisan politician. she is the power behind the throne of all democratic politics. and case in point. joe biden doesn't talk to her. won't leave the beach because of her. will not even reference her because she knows along with the great george clooney, who suddesuddenly a fantastic writee running. >> lawrence: i would say this viewpoint is why the polling is so off when it comes to donald trump. it's been that way in 2016. 2020 and why it's off now. you can't demonize a certain portion of the electorate and expect them to respond accurately to you when you ask them who they are going to vote for they feel not ashamed. don't want to be attacked. keep close do chest until they go in secret ballot room. they are demonized.

president trump. president trump golfed and had policy discussions with matt gaetz and tulsi gabbard. what works -- what works more effectively? >> she has been in cocoon for months. how do you prepare for a presidential debate? what do you do? first did you go threw a series of primaries challenged by your own party. town halls with voters asked questions. not hand picked voters real voters in new hampshire where go out and independents people challenging you. then you do interviews with media. and you do press conferences where people ask you tough questions. then you lay out some major policy speeches where you lay out your agenda and think through what i want to do as president and arguments to defend that and she hasn't done any of that. she did that interview with cnn. and they asked her what will you do on day one? and she couldn't answer. how do you not know the answer to that question when you are the major party nominee? every primary candidate knows the answer to that question, but she didn't have an answer. >> do you know what i can't
