their courage. what steve witkoff described to me today, watching them in action, the agents around the president, how quickly they they dove on him, tackled him, put their own bodies in harm's way to protect him. those are amazing people. but it doesn't mean institutionally that things aren't breaking down. and that is going to be the major question moving forward. whatever shocked senator blumenthal into saying that the public will be shocked and appalled at what we learn about butler. it really i shudder to think. on top of that, what happened today, because a gun, a rifle, a high powered rifle got within short range of president trump and we had four shots that were have four sho. site. they were able to get a description of the vehicle, the
1:01 pm
individual because of drone footage. credit for that. but why did he have any access to that distance with that rifle around the president? that has to be asked. that has to be answered. boxes are excellent questions we need to have answered this is our continuing coverage of today's breaking news. everyone hello i i am arthel neville alongside eric shawn. we are reporting shots were fired in the vicinity of former president trump as he was playing golf in west palm beach, florida happened around 2:00 p.m. eastern time. we are expecting to hear from the palm be beach sheriff's offe in the moment to provide an update. sean hannity has been reporting along with us, this entire hour. sean was actually invited to play that round of golf with the president this morning but he declined, he just wanted to take the day off as he deserves it. but eric is here, sean is here for go ahead.
1:02 pm
>> i happen to go to breakfast with the president's golfing partner, i am friends with them, steve wit cough developer is just a great guy in all honesty. i mean he is a shocked by what he lived through today. he is like why don't you come play golf i said i don't have time to play golf i i got to wo. but he did invite me. and his description of everything that happened is pretty chilling. these are life changing moments i remember where i was when i saw when president reagan was shot. we remembered the assassination attempt against gerald ford. i remember as a kid went robert f kennedy was shot. i have talked to robert f kennedy jr. about it, and jfk. we have got to do a better job here. there certainly a lot of questions that need to be answered as a result of this. the distance issue is a big problem for me.
1:03 pm
the drone footage could be the most helpful bit of news that we have. that it already been confirmed by the president to me and by steve wit cough to me. that is what enabled the law enforcement to go out in force, find the shooter the person they believed to be involved in the shooting where it look at live pictures right now police presence very heavy. few details that we do have lots of black vehicle has been impounded a gun has been recovered an ak-47 has been recovered we are looking for more answers in terms of your very important question that you are raising which is the perimeter surrounding the former president. whether president trump or president biden or any other
1:04 pm
elected officials, party affiliation does not matter protection is what counts. those are some the questions you are raising we hope to get answers specially in light of what happened on july 13 the attempted assassination on the former president will be held to the fire and everyone at once oe answers everyone deserves answers. >> one thing trump said to me it was kind of choked up when he said it to me, my father is running out of lives here. how many more rifles are going to be within assassination distance of my father? he said it with great passion and love as som is someone he in incredible marksman. his shooting with the nation's very best earlier today. sent me a video of it. just so we could fully understand the capacity of the
1:05 pm
rifles we are talking about. these are sharpshooters and he is become good friends with. not all did they secure the president, get on him quickly get them on a golf cart that has high-speed capability of whist him out of the area into the clubhouse. they closed on the golf course but they got everybody else to safety. and within seconds the weight my friend steve described it to me was they had secret service agents with tripods. they had identified immediately the area where the shots had come from. that tells me that with at least within the perimeter of the president, that tells me everyone in that location is doing their job. that is not the big question the big question is if you are within a couple of hundreds of
1:06 pm
yards have of been elected offia presidential candidate, a former president you could not have a situation you have someone with a high powered rifle around t them. that's going to have to be answered and answered very quickly. arthel: sean, sent by first book willget a live shot of heavy poe a coverage in a west palm beach, florida near dixie highway if you are familiar with the area. the standby for us. we are going to get some more from you in a moment right now eric, you're going to get some reaction from the white house right? works local reports as we have said a man is in custody a black vehicle has been impounded. this happened apparently a few hundred yards from the fifth hole where the former president was playing golf the ap reporting the gunfire came from a secret service agent who opened fire at a person with the weapon the former president was
1:07 pm
playing golf. we certainly will hold more on onthe west palm beach police hae their news conference the sheriff's office we're waiting for now. the president and biden live at the white house anything more on the reports this may have started when a secret service agent saw a potential gunman at the golf course and open fire. >> that's almost exactly what happened fox news can now report it was the secret service that fired the gun shot at the suspected gunman outside former president trump's golf course in florida the secret service saw a man carrying the man dropped the rifle took off running we now understand some local reports
1:08 pm
that suspect is now in custody. we are awaiting a press conference in the palm beach sheriff's office as well as the secret service will both be at that press conference but fox news can confirm it was the secret service that fired those shots and what they saw was a threat to the president who is playing golf as we just heard from sean hannity former president trump was on the front nine at trump international when these shots rang out for the secret service saw what they thought was a threat. a lone gunman carrying ak-47 was a secret service for that suspect what running we are now told he is in custody. eric: that is the breaking news that it wasn't and now we know according to the secret service a gunman firing at the president. it was a potential threat to the president of course. a man with an ak-47 shot at by the secret service agent. so obviously what we are talking about potentially as a second potential assassination attempt
1:09 pm
of former president of the united states. this time while he was playing golf within sight of the street on the fifth hole of his golf course in west palm beach. >> there's no question about it is notable at this event was not on any kind of public schedule but former president trump is candidate to return to the white house but this event was not a public schedule so it's not clear how this alleged lone gunman knew the former president will be playing golf today and also what time. we heard the prez on the fifth hole the front night at trump international heart of the lone gunman know perhaps he felled the motorcade the former president travels and eight motorcade he has secret service protection. that's one of the other things this was -- if this was another potential assassin how he had this information where it former president trump was playing golf he owns numerous golf courses in the state of florida innate miami area and of course trump international's closest to mar-a-lago and palm beach where he resides.
1:10 pm
that's one of the big questions coming up shortly. so far if he got his schedule is if you are a local you know the former president plays golf. you can obviously see police and secret service are present you can see the motorcade and you know and that is happening. we see at mo it motorcade rightw going over the bridge from palm beach over the bridge to west palm beach pickle is not a far trip. i former president spoke to bret baier and bret's court in the former presidents" tell everybody i am fine. the secret service did a great job. in light of the new reporting the secret service did what it is supposed to do. saw a threat to the present a potential threat amount and ak-47 within the vicinity of the former president on the street a few hundred yards apparently away from the fifth hole. the secret service agent did what they are trained to do, check out the service revolver their weapons and tried to stop
1:11 pm
this apparent suspect this now with a gun and the shots were fired and now he is in custody. we do not know if he was shot we do know this man is in custody. so at least in this case right now it appears the secret service protection worked. but as a sean hannity was saying there's certainly a lot of question why was i was an ak-47 why was he allowed on that street in the vicinity closed so this could not have happened in the first place question. >> and ak-47 is very hard to conceal. it's a rifle, not a hand got in unless the man was wearing a long jacket. again it's probably 80 degrees down there so it would look strange if someone was concealing a rifle under some kind of long coat. he was not see it something that would stand out on the streets of west palm beach.
1:12 pm
vice president harris and that to eat because i've been briefed on reports of gunshots fired and former president trump and his property in florida and i am glad he is safe. of violence has no place in america. some critics some might say that violence was necessary potentially. >> our hats off in gratitude to the men and women of the united states of the secret service. to the top level politicians one for my ron we are told and other mentally unstable people we have seen that already happenedwe hao many times in the history of this country went violence has occurred and thankfully the secret service apparently was able to stop it could potentially have been something much much worse on the fifth
1:13 pm
hole of the trump international golf course and a west palm beach, florida. lucas thank you. standstandbys i know you will. arthel: also produced a report is through our bret baier the former president trump saying ttell everybody i am fine's most important piece of information but former president trump is okay going to bring in former fbi agent nicole parker. something else important in this reporting that has changed we can now confirm the pop, pop, pop the four gunshots we heard that were heard on the trump international golf course in west palm beach around 2:00 p.m. eastern time those shots were fired by secret service agent who detected, who noticed a lone gunman carrying ak-47 it was considered a threat to the former president. not very far from them according to eric trump at fifth hole
1:14 pm
where the president happened to be at that time. he said that is the closest point to the street of that golf course. so given what we do know this changes the game. this is yet another attempt on the life of the former president. >> i agree it's more and more looking like it was a targeted attack against president trump. and here we are again with the difference is, they're very key differences in this area the secret service stepped up to the line they did everything they needed to do to stop the threat immediately. thank you, that is what they should be doing. to shawn's point, had this individual ever get disappoint to wear president was that something has to be looked into i believe all of the individuals in this nation frankly in this world right now president trump is more threats against him than any other person because he is being looked at as a political candidate but yes foreign adversaries that are not fans either arrondissement very vocal
1:15 pm
about this. i'm here in south florida it right now it's hot, humid and sticky to hiding ak-47 today it's very hot there heat advisories that's not something easily to do that bid very odd to be walking around florida today with a jacket on. it just would not look right. something important to know the trump international golf club in west palm beach is just west of i-95. i've actually been to that golf course before the fifth hole in particular if he was on the green of the fifth hole that is about 225 feet from a public bus stop. not 225 yards but 225 feet. so again it goes back to secret service you are really needing to provide enough resources to protect president trump. any street within the vicinity of where he may be has got to be covered. it absolutely does. with all the threats is being
1:16 pm
faced with, he deserves this he should be able to go about and live his life. not even a rally it was at his private golf course. i have been what do not live in fear and he is not going to live in fear he is a lawyer and says he's okay no to the first concern he had was worth my golf partner? is everyone else okay? we are in very, various and they are dangerous times right now. this individual the suspect is in custody. he or she is alive. i like butler. arthel: you're right the suspect is in custody so i ask you, what are they asking this would have been gunman. what questions do they have for him? obviously he will have his right to an attorney give us an idea of what would be happening right now. >> is going to be mirandized as
1:17 pm
if he has a right to an attorney. if he gets an attorney present. with this individual chooses to speak up a law enforcement is going to be asking him everything imaginable under the sun, what were you doing there? what were your intentions? why were you here? where are you from? that would look at things he's not going to tell law-enforcement very early to go into interrogation setting they confess and say this is what is up to this is what i was doing that is extremely rare. they're going to look at is digital footprint to look at everything the location of a car, the drone, that drone is a much valuable evidence law-enforcement thought was thag to be speaking to the suspect going through all the social media accounts. arthel: nicole, let me get in here. as we said the suspect has been apprehended with the test now to the police on martin county, florida pray they are speaking now. >> saw the vehicle, match the tag and we set up on the vehicle but bobo what we do here, we pid in the car got it safely
1:18 pm
stopped. and got the driver in custody paired right now as we speak the fbi secret service and that sheriff's office is at the scene and responded there for they'lle over the investigation. howard flatbed tow truck will tow the vehicle back. back to palm beach could ever crew that we actually do have the suspect they are looking for in palm beach county predictive of the suspects name yet? x we know his name and the fbi clearly knows his name. i am not in a position to release that. i don't trump posted on "truth social" they had recovered ak-47 near where the shooting incident happened. anything you can confirm with that? >> i do not know anymore at this time. [inaudible] they have determined. [inaudible] [inaudible] c5 the audio is unclear. but we are seeing here and listening to this is in martin
1:19 pm
county florida this is a county where the gunmen was arrested again there in martin county, florida. he says the vehicle has been impounded. i believe i have a nicole with me still nicole parker if you are with me i wanted to ask you they have this vehicle in custody you and i were just discussing in terms of what questions authorities would be asking what information could be gleaned from the actual vehicle. you're going to have a bend that number, a license plate. you are going to have the insurance papers or not in that vehicle. what can authorities and gleaned from that? also keeping in mind when ak-47 long-range rifle was also collected on scene? >> asked i do apologize we got the audio back again. going to go back to the press conference okay? >> he drivers now in custody in hands of the federal bureau of investigation brickwork's what
1:20 pm
was a misty man misdemeanor appe car? >> relatively calm flat was not displaying a lot of emotions did not ask what this was about. one foursome with long rifles blue lights a lot going on, never questioned it. but susie armed at the time he or she? like he was not armed we took him out of the car. we did not do a search i would suspect getting a search warrant now. the app they'll take that car we will transport it for them back to palm beach county to their office. >> how long was the highway at lockdown to drivers on the road an hour plus? >> i think it still lockdown. i had to come back or driving southbound in a northbound lane was blocked off and cut across but i would tell your viewers do not get on i-95 northbound. starts at lot of people stopping me asking the turnpike is clear is that still open? lexi turnpike is clear to my knowledge it was not involved in this incident.
1:21 pm
>> and mike to the accident involving the civilians, do we know how many were in the car? who do not get any information of the civilian crash it's not related to the investigation except obviously tangentially because they crashed because of the traffic stop. >> i know you do not have much information, was it to civilians colliding or the head by responding officer question. >> the question whether there were two the nuance of that crash i do not have the information i'm sorry because anything else to add that i have not asked you about? >> and replace of the cooperation we've had from the ohiopatrol, the county sheriff's office, flew the helicopter and to assist us the fbi and the secret service could not ask for better interagency cooperation for. >> complications after you got the bullet how quickly do you think that sheriff's office wass able to spot the car? >> the time between the bullet went out and we had the vehicle is no time at all. i just sat down to have my only second cup a copy of the day as soon as i heard ebola be on the
1:22 pm
lookout and i knew would catch the car but i set my coffee down's are getting ready to come out here and sure enough without the car. >> thank you so much appreciate, good to see you. arthel: okay that was a live interview from w fl x in martin county, florida which in fact is a county where the gunman was arrested. i do want to bring a nicole parker >> and former fbi detective. nicole, couple things stood out to me from that line of questioning the officer confirmed it was it is a man a mail suspect in custody. he mentioned his demeanor was calm when they pulled him out of the car they never asking questions like what was this about? so what is a say to you? >> first of all to put things into perspective for the beer palm beach county is where this incident occurred with president trump and then it sounds like the individual headed north into martin county it's a county directly north of palm beach county.
1:23 pm
i heard and again i'd like to get confirmation on this there was an accident because of the traffic stop. it seemed to me at law enforcement on this vehicle identified this vehicle they were going to stop this vehicle and the individual whatever it was it sounds like there was an accident like to get that confirmed. that leads me too believe there were not willingly going to stop for law enforcement. that says a lot for getting back to the vehicle the vehicles depending upon the year the car long there are infotainment systems in your cars. if it is a newer vehicle does not have be that new there's a substantial amount of evidence i that can come for your vehicle such as your gps the map locations, the contact you have come to think about every can we get into your car plus ear plug it in her car and charging something that data so into infotainment system and that is a treasure trove for law enforcement you take that along with everything else are going to be doing for this person is in custody but they are alive.
1:24 pm
that's a makes it unique and different from the butler incident. law enforcement would be spending a lot of time with this individual. again it's all hands on deck you've got local, state, federal law enforcement they mention the secret service working with the fbi, palm beach county sheriff's office. we are going to take the vehicle back to the fbi office in palm beach. headquarters is in miramar, florida. i'm not certain that's will take the car but a lot of times in our investigation take the vehicle back to headquarters better execute searches under things of that nature. there be a lot of information to come out. your question about the vehicle is extremely important that will be a treasure trove of information regarding what happened. on the back and there's analyst is individuals conducting interviews. running social media accounts, names, checking who are the family members? are the less on associations? or to the spurs and work? so much information that is going to come out i am grateful this person was apprehended
1:25 pm
safely and is in custody and that they will face justice. >> you are right about in terms of securing a search warrant for that car. you are right in terms of the treasure trove of information that could be found not only from the infotainment system that's more high-tech let's go to good old-fashioned old-school reporting and investigating. they are going to be checking for fingerprints. who was in the car with this guy at this point we do not think it was anyone else in the car with the suspect. but there will be fingerprints in that car there will be various things in the glove compartment too. things in the back compartment behind the seat report magazines et cetera per as you can imagine they will search that car from front to back aside to side up, down, all around. in the meantime and i want to go back to the skies demeanor. when he was arrested, when he
1:26 pm
was stopped they said his demeanor was calm. he did not ask what is this about? it is as if he obviously knew his going to get caught. he knew the jig was up and he was there. what does that say to you? given his calm demeanor he might be willing to cooperate? >> i would certainly hope so for that is an important point to make. he was calm and i agreed to the gig is up a lot of time to these high-speed changes we cannot confirm it's a high-speed chase but incidents where it is a traffic stop and they are like look, i'm caught, what do i need to do? and let's see what happens. again i do not want to save this individuals willing to speak or not. several times i've been surprised when suspects have been willing to speak and hope there's no chance are going to speak and they willingly do publicity what happens law enforcement is handling this appropriately. sounds like everything is going
1:27 pm
as it should i'm glad to hear this in light of july 13. the most important thing to american's full transparency. it was lacking was still do have questions what happened in butler, pennsylvania. it's time for america soon exactly was happening. if a mistake was made or whatever it might be an incident that occurred americans deserve to know. i appreciate fox were waiting to confirm information. like paul said earlier on of the program nine out of 10 times the first information coming out is not accurate what but changes t of all spirit all people are interested in president trump is a right to live freely and safely not have to live in fear of violence in his life is consulate risk. arthel: indeed a lot of great points you make another great point we want to make with our viewers through bret baier before president did say tell everyone i am fine for that's good news to report.
1:28 pm
nicole parker standby for us we will get back to you moments. let's go over too eric now. eric: looked a recap as of what we know as of this it moment for the suspect in custody after authorities say was seen what could be an ak-47 the vicinity form president trump engulfed on the fifth hold the trump international golf course. secret service agent saw a man with a gun and then open fire said the service on the man if that thread apparently it did not hit him the suspect it apparently drove away but by using a drone authorities were able to follow his vehicle, stop him. that vehicle we are told now cleared the man in custody no indication yet that the alleged gunman opened fire with this weapon at the former president went everyone to know he just posted that he is safe and well. that's when fox news conjured a former d.c. homicide detective ted williams.
1:29 pm
sean hannity was on it has been on with our coverage eric trump told the fifth hole with only a few hundred yards or nicole said a few hundred feet from a bus stop. very close to the street we have a line of sight. wouldn't that street be close? second of all thank goodness for the secret service they were able to identify an alleged gunman. what would they get to the situation and the first place if a permit have been hardened? >> you add to an excellent question you would have to believe and i heard sean hannity a little bit earlier. i agree that perimeter there is no way that anybody on the ground should have been an ear cider eyesight of the president golfing or the former president golfing there. there still a great deal of confusion i have heard here the
1:30 pm
secret service fired first there is some information on confirmed out here that the individual may have also filed and the secret service returned fire. but what we do know is that individual left the scene in an automobile per the automobile they now have certainly been able to find. i was told there they were notl using drones they had caught her car readers to look at the license plate and that was one of the other ways they were able to find this individual right away. eric: u.s. official telling fox news and i quote the investigation is treating the suspect as a potential assassin. this does not appear to be a random guy with an ak-47 walking outside of trump's club the official added to fox news again the u.s. official telling fox news the investigation now treating the suspect as a
1:31 pm
potential assassin. your thoughts on that, ted? that this is apparently the second time. >> i have gotten word earlier from another network the former president was in fact the target here. it is my understanding they have recovered not only the ak-47 with atn f i am sure tracing that ak-47 if it's an ak-47 to where it was purchased they know everything you can conceivably think about that weapon. and also while he may or may not be talking they note now what the guy ate for breakfast this morning. that is how fast they can process information there. but let's be sure, we have a crime scene.
1:32 pm
we with federal, state, local lw enforcement having to work backwards from a crime scene to try to determine everything they can about the person in custody. too also try to determine if there are some accomplices out there that they do not know about. i would have to believe that at this a press conference we are going to learn some very valuable information. i heard nicole parker earlier, and i do agree the public has a right to know. and as soon as i can get information to the public they should. but, they definitely do not want to contaminate what i define as a crime scene. i would assume at some stage or another they are getting a search warrant for that automobile before they scrub it. eric: what is so alarming about this there is someone with an
1:33 pm
ak-47 near the former president. i'm not saying this is iran based. but we know iran has had a threat against former president trump's life for the assassination of the terrorist soleimani ahead of the rgc. iran has a publicly telegraphed this. they have sent to people involved with agents here in the united states to try to kill some of the activists that are against the regime in iran. but just knowing that of course or tighten security but one has got to ask if you are a few hundred feet from a bus stop why was someone allowed to get that close with a weapon even though thankfully i have not been another horrible tragedy like we saw in butler. >> you know, let's be candid here. when you have these kind of shootings or attempted assassinations like we had in butler, pennsylvania they are always copycats out here.
1:34 pm
there's always someone trying to make a name for themselves by taking out unfortunately a public official. law enforcement is always on a heightened state of alert. i have to ask the same question that you just asked. why wouldn't a perimeter if it is so close to a public area from the golf course, why would it be secure? i heard arthel neville ask an excellent question earlier. and that is dealing with a president trump. former president trump is going to have to listen to the secret service. and ifif there is an area they e they need the president needs to listen to them. and he needs to not be in that area. i'm not saying i know what to make it clear it i'm not saying he's not listening to the secret
1:35 pm
service but the secret service know full well in that area which he is golfing was very close to a public street. and as a result of that that is always something that can be accessible and assess someone who is attempted to assassinate the former president here. eric: finally i've dealt with secret service of course and perform at present i'm not going to mention which one it is, who would not listen to the secret service and i would talk to the secret service agents about that at the time. they sit you elect them we protect them they cannot always say the prot protect he will not always completely listen completely to the advice. john f kenny for example tragically decided to write their dallas they took the dome he wanted the dome off to lincoln in which he was assassinated in.
1:36 pm
what needs to be done? whether it's the protect the protective service which worked thank god. this at gunman this alleged gunman was seen, shot at in scared away there is not another assassination attempt apparently. what do the need to change? >> what they need to change is what the targeted official also needs to change. whether it's former president or current president what needs to change as they are going to have to listen to their security detail because the security detail could only ask so much to keep them from being unfortunately assassinated. on that is something we find. presidents are individual they always want to press the flesh
1:37 pm
they want to kiss the baby. they want to be shaking hands with individuals. but this is a new day. and they are going to have to take precautions. and the only time they can successfully protect these individuals is for these individuals to listen to them. meaning these public officials. and again i want to make sure i am clear. i'm not saying the former president has not listen to a security detail. but, there is no way he and sean hannity is right, there is no way that perimeter should have been set with summit with an ak-47 in closer proximity with the former president golfing. >> president ford, sarah j mort fired him and misted 17 days later as squeaky was heading near with a gun we do not want this to happen again. >> of course, thank you.
1:38 pm
for the very latest you can see thank you ted williams awaiting for the news conference in west palm beach. arthel: ought to bring an former nypd commanding officer fox news contributor paul morrow. as we wait for this press, sue started went to pick up for ted williams left off. he made an excellent point saying we have to be aware of copycats people trying to make a name for themselves. we can refer to the suspect as a potential assassin given that we are confirming the former president was the intended target. so, consider what ted williams and sing the skies in custody they're going to be asking lots of questions we do not know if he's going to take on an attorney or not. he has a right to one but given ted's point of trying people trying to make a name for themselves do you think there is a possibility this suspect will talk to police? >> i do.
1:39 pm
i will elucidate why. very often in situations like this something and this is a little bit of a leap at soissomething that is politicaly motivated, it's almost like terrorism that's motivated by an ideal or an ideology but this is how the perpetrators talk to the world. very often it is my experience ought briefing terrorism suspects the problem is not getting them to talk the problem is getting them to shut up on to keep them on topic. because they tend to ramble and thethey're all over the place. so we don't know there are no hard and fixed rules on this kind of thing. it always depends on the persons personal demeanor, and where they are coming from. but in a situation like this, if it is in fact politically motivated i would go out on a limb and say there is a chance he will talk in a very well may be proud of it if in fact he wasn't motivated and we do not know this. if he was motivated by politics
1:40 pm
and if in fact he was targeting donald trump i still want to remain cautious and to look at the press briefing. arthel: absolutely. butwhat we don't know -- we do w the suspect is a mail we don't know h is hl say a lot as well that will determine where investigators go which trail they go down to find answers. >> absolutely. he is going to have a social media presence almost certainly. he is likely identified by now. they are going to be doing all the background and we've all been speaking about. they are going to be looking into didn't he write a manifesto? what are a social media post light? what does a post associate say? things he was passionate about or interested in. but then were talking a lot about the perimeter. there is also a digital perimeter. and one of the things you have to consider a in this constantly
1:41 pm
for donald trump but even jd vance and of course the sitting president obviously joe biden, and kamala harris which is you have to set up a digital perimeter so you can potentially pick up people who are at leading slipping down lives in deciding this is appropriate and required. with one of things i'll be looked at very, very hardest could this person have been picked up earlier? as you and i talked about earlier in the broadcasts it was the one car which began to suggest maybe this was a targeted event. then you have to say to yourself how did he know? has this person been surveilling that golf course on sundays regularly? is it been trailing donald trump, as he can? was that not picked up? you have to start asking these deeper questions and that will go into the investigation. one then we should notice is now been identified as an assassin but what that means that was the fbi has a case there's a direct statute on point that says if
1:42 pm
you try to kill a president you violate that statute not but the fbi in the lead. arthel: each of a statement from the fbi office and national press operation units" the fbi has responded to west palm beach, florida and is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former president trump. >> that tracks were once as declared in assassination attempt on a present or former present the fbi has a ticket under that statute it is well-established. that's what even in butler the fbi's not investigating any of the failures that might have occurred with the secret service, which certainly look to have broken down. that is not their job or they are investigating the attempted assassination of donald trump. they do not have the lead on the civilian killed for the two civilians that were wounded. these are very prescribed right now the bureau has a ticket.
1:43 pm
and in a case like this, that is important and it is good. this person may not even be from the area. something at this level he may have traveled my understanding is i believe he is a mail. he usually is. clear social media out there that he is a mail. he may have traveled outside the area t but only the bureau's reh to look back and reach into where he's from. it ccould be very far away. arthel: the fbi is reaching. they are investigated they are on top of that standby for me paul i'm going to toss it over too eric right now. eric: we are told president biden vice at president harris have been briefed this. they are relieved the former president is okay and is arthel just said the fbi not saying this appears to be an attempted assassination president trump. these second to this nation has gone through thankfully, we do
1:44 pm
not know if the gunmen got any shots off at the moment are waiting for confirmation for the news com conference is about to begin at some point you see on your screen right there whether or not that did have we do know the secret service agent we are told an advance team several holes ahead of the president as he was playing golf did see a man with a gun identified as an ak-47 and open fire on that suspect within flood was later caught on i-95. so, in advance team was able to do with the purposes for the secret service to try to protect the high profile protect these and were able to in this case thankfully protect former president trump. lucas tomlinson live on the north lawn of the white house with more information and details from there. lucas, what if you got? what's the fbi has confirmed it's treating this in gunmen as an attempted assassination of former president donald trump.
1:45 pm
it is a notable trump trump international only four and a half miles from more log over the former president resides in if this in gunmen was awaiting for the presence of the former president follows a certain pattern of life everyone knows he likes to play golf. if this man was staking out the former president he would not have to go far just four and a half miles from mar-a-lago to trump international to play golf it is notable it was a secret service that fired the shots as soon as they saw this gunmen brandish the ak-47 they thought that was an imminent threat to the former president right to the open fire of course just two months ago almost to the due day on july 13 in butler, pennsylvania after the assassination attempt of former president donald trump the secret service understands they must shoot first and it appears that's what happens or the gunmen according to sources drop the weapon fled in his suv had a
1:46 pm
getaway car available were learning more as they await the press a congressman that west palm beach sheriff's department and the secret service. eric: pretty darn disturbing situation to have this happen twice for those of a certain age remember our history recent past with the assassination attempts in the past of officials and those who have lived through robert f kennedy and john f. kennedy, martin luther king and others barely fatten a sense this nation a gone beyond that. then of course it butler, pennsylvania and now this a second time. lucas, you know history very well former president ford when he was a president shot at 17 days later again someone with a gun what type of questions do you think are now before the secret service that thankfully were able to prevent a tragedy today on the fifth and six the golf hole of trump international
1:47 pm
what questions will they face now and capitol hill thankfully listen this case their professionalism was successful. quickly change everything two months ago the secret service understands it must shoot first it cannot wait for a potential assassin to shoot first that appears to be the situation here. that will be the question off the top did the secret service shoot first what can you tell us about the suspect question what can you describe is individual what is his name? where is he from? all of that information i'm just to hear more details about how this one down and what did this in gunmen trail the president from mar-a-lago? against terms and golf clubs only for half miles from mar-a-lago if a potential assassin was waiting for the president he did not have to go far at the 12 minute drive for
1:48 pm
half miles was certainly there's a pattern of life the former presidents, everyone knows he likes to play golf if he goes out to place would be playing one of his clubs there. eric: this is not on a public schedule but as you pointed out you could see that motorcade if he is a man of routine on the weekend, sometimes these circumstances can converge. lucas tomlinson, standby at the white house, thank you will go to arthel. arthel: yes i'm going to bring back former u.s. secret service agent charles marino. just moments ago got the same from the fbi sang the fbi has responded to west palm beach, florida and is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of former president trump. how does this change the investigation at this point? >> with a pending search warrant for the vehicle i think the secret service is anxiously going to be awaiting the results to see if there is any
1:49 pm
protective intelligence related evidence that was either on a suspect or within the vehicle in terms of preparation for the events that took place today on the part of the armed suspect. where there additional weapons in the car? were there materials that would give an indication of some ongoing type of surveillance? to include any potential maps of the golf course, of other locations in the palm palm beaca up to and including mar-a-lago. in other words was their extensive homework done in advance, prior to today's events? the ultimate question is how did the suspect note to be at the golf course today? was of the ongoing surveillance? was it a leak of information? or just a target of opportunity
1:50 pm
and that is the former president is known to go and they suspect was on-site and prepared in the event the former president did in fact show up. when the former president arrives to these types of locations, and eric spoke to it earlier, it cannot go unnoticed there is a heavy police purposes. a lot of secret service vehicles. it does draw attention to itself. but this may be a target of opportunity the suspect was anticipating and prepared for. how prepared? it could beat go beyond just being armed with the ak-47. arthel: and clearly, charles, the secret service is going to want to strive for transparency. given what happened on july 13 and following. that said, how will the secret service coordinate with the fbi in terms of this investigation?
1:51 pm
how much information can we expect to hear to provide for the public as we have all of these questions? as we have all these questions that need to be answered. i look like the press conference is going be getting started very soon for you and i will continue to talk until then. so the point that i am making as we are waiting for the press conference in west palm beach, florida. matthew charles, the coordination between the fbi, the secret service and the amount of information we can expect as the public at this juncture. as to provide some solace to the public. some sort of calming effect to the public. but also not to jeopardize investigation. >> it will begin at this press conference, arthel, unlike in butler where the secret service not to show up to the first press conference which i thought was a huge strategic mistake. let's see if they have learned their lesson and there will be a secret service representative at this press conference. along with the other agencies involved in the investigation.
1:52 pm
this shows, and demonstrates unity in terms of investigative efforts. of course the secret service will work very close with the fbi the fbi taking the lead since this individual has been designated as a suspected assassin and the fbi could take over that investigation paid the secret service will support them in any way possible. up to and including the protective measures that were in place around the golf course. >> secret service will provide information that they have as well as local authorities. west palm beach county you've got sheriff's office early on in this investigation is the single man that has been apprehended. his vehicle has been impounded. a search warrant has been filed to search that vehicle what appears we are going to hear from the police as well as the
1:53 pm
secret service as you are saying they need to become very public facing very quickly to provide answers, as many answers as a possible at this juncture in this investigation. again, i am just wondering how this changes the investigation you've got the fbi involved it is deemed a potential assassin. >> there's a lot of outstanding questions that are going to be asked first. and that is, is this individual acting alone? part of a larger group is there a greater threat to not only the former president for those associated with him including his running mate jd vance. or to the greater public. these fall under what are known as exemptions to miranda that is you want to the questions answered and you don't care if they become admissible down the line in a court of law. you want to make sure you are asking the right questions to
1:54 pm
identify the threat level the former president continues to face. or is it one of many for today? that is what the fbi and secret service need to determine right away. regardless of where this goes in a court of law and charges against the suspect on the line pretty want to make sure the public is a safe and that the former president and his colleagues remain safe. his far as the investigation goes is to be whole of government approach we are dealing with something like this. will be no limit placed on their resources to get to the bottom of this. we know we are facing challenges in the butler case with the shooshooters encrypted devices d applications. of course my belief is the fbi in these type of situations need to be granted access to the information to know if there's a greater threat against the protective ease of the united states secret service.
1:55 pm
we'll see where this goes. arthel: you made a very important point i want to go back to you are saying in terms of the investigation and interrogating the suspect, yes he has a right to an attorney. but moran dicing him is what i understand you to say is not the most imperative point at that point. they want to get as much information from this guy as quickly as they need to get it. and so therefore at this information is not admissible in court later it does not matter they need to know if this is a widespread threat or if the threat has been limited to a more narrow scope. quickset is right that is a risk approach based on the law enforcement professionals that are going to be in the room with this individual from the fbi, to local law enforcement and the secret service pray there are two ways to accomplish that. either you a asked the questions that you want answered without providing miranda or you get the suspect to waive his miranda rights. and agrees to talk with you and
1:56 pm
that becomes admissible and they suspect it folks you want the answers to the question they're not going to have a direct impact on the overall case against the suspect. there's too much evidence already to demonstrate that he presented a very clear threat to the former president. and said that is the determination these investigators are going to make. it's one that has to be made in these types of situations when you are urgently trying to delineate what the threat level is right now against the former president. is it any higher than what it was in butler? arthel: we are getting very close to this press conference there and a west palm beach,
1:57 pm
florida. we are expecting to hear from police. we are expecting to hear from secret service, to speak about this attempted assassination. yet again on the life of the former president donald trump. i want to ask you, we do know or reportedly this would be gunmen had an ak-47 and he was in possession of one that has been found in the police have it in their custody they are doing the normal things and checking for fingerprints and registration if there is something. when we start to pull out from this, of course were focusing in on this incident. i'm very keen to find out what is happening. i am just wondering if you have had a chance to have a little bit of the helicopter overview of what this means and what it is saying to you? and again given the state of our politics on the former attempt on the former president, you've got iran one thing he is in
1:58 pm
their scope so to speak as well. given all of that what does this say to you, charles? >> it sounds like we were talkig about a lot of the same things that we were discussing after butler. what took place with the attempted assassination that is, is the secret service doing everything they should be to match the current threat level against the former president and here in the united states in general? that is going to come to the point of asking once again about perimeters. how close to this individual gets to the former president while armed with this ak? that secret service is going to have to answer that question. and do the perimeters and match in our street closures for example being executed in a manner in which they showed were public roadways have direct visibility to the former
1:59 pm
president as it did in the fifth hole. they are going to establish reasonable the house the former and present is facing. arthel: indeed former secret service agent, thank you so much. eric: it next former fbi special agent nicole parker back with us as we wait for the news conference to start with the ap reporting the suspect pushed the muzzle of his weapon through the fence line. so this guy had the weapon ak-47 allegedly push it through the fence line. that is when the advance team of the fbi or the secret service advance s team is a few holes ahead of the former president scoping out the area looking for threats like this. that is when an agent open fire, at least one at the suspect the suspect not hit able to flee in an suv captured by martin county police and i95.
2:00 pm
again the question is too close to call. it's just too close to have a potential gunmen be able to fit the muzzle through a fence line at a >> that is alarming and showing that was even possible, they get it again, like i said, this green this whole. >> this go to the news conference and listen. >> the fbi for the secret service, the state attorney's office, we are going to give you everything that we have every thing so when we get, think about your question because keep them to the information that you've heard and don't get into the what-ifs and because of this. were not going to go there. keep that in mind and we will be good so here we go. all right, 130 this afternoon, a call came out and shots were fired of his calling by secret
