exclusive, after two years donald trump sat down with us for wide ranging interview opening up her life before, during and after the white house. and what prepared her most to be the first lady? >> ainsley: you said in the book sometimes in order to succeed, you must be willing to take risks. how did the risks early on as a model prepare you for life as the first lady? first laid in front of the world fashion industry. the fashion industry is glamorous but at the same time it's very tough everybody judges you. look at you a certain way. so, it's -- it can be mean world as well. so, nothing prepared me more for this world than fashion. it gives you a thick skin.

>> steve: tough business the fashion business. >> brian: do you see the way she holds herself? i wonder what she learned in the business because the way she stands, the way she looks. always seems to be aware of angles. >> ainsley: she is very polished. she is very elegant. yes, even if the last hour when we interviewed her about kamala harris, she was gracious. she said this is why i'm not supporting kamala; however, america gets to decide. so, we are -- we talked to her for a while. we're going to show you an extended version of that coming up in this hour. and in this segment, we're going to talk about her family. her relationship with donald trump. and what it was like to join blended families. >> steve: in fact, don't you have a soundbite about barron? >> ainsley: we do. thank you for teeing that up. here you go. >> ainsley: there is a picture in the book and you are working at the desk. and you have barron in one of those small little motorized cars. books, his children's books are

all over the floor. you have papers all over the desk. i looked at that picture and i said this is a working mom's life. we can all relate to this. everything is chaotic. everything is hectic but so much fun. and everyone tells us to enjoy those moments because they are fleeting and your kids grow up and it just flies by. when you look at that picture, what was happening in that moment? >> when i see it, that was the time that i did qvc selections steve. >> ainsley: it sold out. >> it did. it was very successful. i was doing all at the same time. working, playing with barron. he has his own with his car and his books. we talking. so i think it's very important that we show our children we are working to give them an example how life is. that they see us as real productive that we have ideas.

that ideas come to life. and that's barron. >> steve: love that picture. >> lawrence: she gets criticism for her decision to be more active in barron's life. if you remember back in 2015 she made it very clear her first priority was to be a mom. that time goes by so fast. remember, barron was so short when they went into the white house. now the kid is like 6'8". >> ainsley: donald trump said because of her mom's cooking. we do talk about the locals of her mother. we talk about if she wanted more children if donald and melania discussed that and what it was like for her to give up her job and just focus on being a mom. >> brian: yeah. i also think she must feel somewhat burned by her friends that have written books about the friendship and gone on other networks and said stuff. she has done nothing to deserve that. >> ainsley: she writes that in the book and some ever of her answers are pretty telling in the interview. we have much more from melania trump, her personal life, her relationship with donald trump. that will be in this hour.

>> lawrence: so the democratic nominee plans to visit the border in arizona tomorrow it. would be her first trip there since 2021. she is the border czar. ains. >> brian: can you tell by the masks. >> ainsley: peter doocy was there the last time harris visit wanted the border and he joins us live from the white house. that's true. is that the last time during the pandemic, peter? >> peter: it was the first time and the last time and now somebody is turning on the rain machine so it's harder to hear us. but, vice president harris keeps talking about a new way forward that just really does not square with what president biden was saying yesterday in his own interview on "the view" that she has been a key player in every decision for the last three and a half years. and it specially does square with the fact that now she is still not taking responsibility for the broken immigration system. >> we do have a broken immigration system. >> um-huh. >> and it needs to be fixed. fnsd if we take a step back, months ago, some of the most conservative members of the

united states congress came together with others, proposed a border security bill. donald trump got word of the bill, realized it was going to fix the problem he wanted to run on and told them to kill the bill. >> peter: vice president harris is also calling now for something we have not heard in a campaign ad or seen on a poster or really ever heard about when talking about federal funding for housing. she wants it to be holistic. >> . so work is going to be through what we do in terms of giving benefits and assistance to state and local governments around transit dollars. and looking holistically at the connection between that and housing. and looking holistically at the incentives we in the federal government can create for local and state governments to actually engage in planning in holistic manner that includes prioritizing affordable housing for working people. >> peter: the campaign seems happy to let that interview stand. vice president harris has no campaign events today but she

will be here at the white house and even though there is only one president at a time and the president sets foreign policy and conducts diplomacy she has her own meeting today separate with president biden with ukraine's volodymyr zelenskyy. back to you. >> steve: interesting. >> ainsley: interesting they are separated. >> steve: no kidding. peter, she is going to go to the southern border tomorrow. is it going to be like yesterday's interviews where she doesn't really announce anything it's just a photo op.? >> peter: almost certainly. although it's a friday time for a policy. trial balloon out. we don't expect her to do anything but take a being a lot. any other comment she made about the border since she became the nominee. dad, i will bet you a dollar she is going to go there and talk about how donald trump told republicans to vote against the bipartisan border deal. and that they -- if she is president, she will bring it

couldn't do. i was able to delegate her responsibility in everything from foreign policy to domestic policy and dana had a great point, congratulations you just officially named her responsible for the biden administration game on. don't detach yourself now. >> steve: so she is going to arizona. the interesting thing when you look at the statistics to try to explain it because we're sitting in new york city. we don't know what is going on in arizona. right now the late latest poll and other polls out there show that donald trump is ahead by 1 point in arizona. however she is under water by 11 points when it comes to immigration and the border what's the number one issue in arizona right now? it was in our packet today it's defending democracy. that's number one. so, obviously, she is going to go to the southern border tomorrow she can pick up one or two points in the big number, that's a win for her.

otherwise, i think it probably just going to be a photo op. but, ultimately, the people of arizona appear to be more interested in democracy, number two. >> brian: i would love to see another poll. >> ainsley: democracy than the economy? >> brian: preserving democracy. 27%. second is inflation with 26. immigration is third. with 21%. >> do you know what that says, brian, is that the people of arizona, as the people in every swing state are being bombarded by tv ads. the tv ads are moving those numbers. because those numbers are different than the numbers we saw about two months ago. >> ainsley: when we hear protecting democracy, i know democrats love to say that because they want to say that against donald trump. when i hear what protecting democracy means for me is protecting this country that i love. who is going to do that better? i don't want to lose this country. and i feel like we are becoming -- these progressive

issues i'm not a progressive. i'm probably more moderate or conservative. but, i just -- i'm floored, i was floored when bernie sanders ran. and was pushing socialism and some people got on board. and then. >> steve: he was leading in all the primaries. >> ainsley: what is going through people's mind? how can i be so far away from the people who support bernie sanders? >> brian: he pretends to be the voice of the working class and those horrible billionaires. all right. here's a sid side by side. trump-harris, watch. >> china right now is building major auto plants in mexico. we will put a 100 percent tariff on every single car that they want to come across our border. and tell them only that they will get rid of the tariff under one circumstance: if you build your plant not in mexico but in to the united states and use our people as your workers.

>> donald trump also talked a big game on our trade deficit with china. while he constantly got played by china. i will never hesitate to take swift and strong measures when china undermines the rules of the road at the expense of our workers. >> of the 1.3 million jobs migrants, illegal people that came in illegally into our country got 635,000 jobs. >> the cost of living in america is still just too high. many americans who aspire to own a home are unable to save enough for a down payment on a house. >> ask yourself is anything less expensive than it was four years ago? >> no! >> where are the mimi missing 818,000 jobs?

>> steve: that is what go s. going on out on the stump two different approaches. >> brian: here is a look at the manufacturing job reality. look, 414,000 jobs added under trump, 177,000 added under biden-harris. pre-pandemic, they did lose -- trump did lose $178,000 during the pandemic. i just don't know how you're going to quantify that and blame that on him. >> lawrence: the problem, brian, i'm noticing, the difference between the two candidates. okay, brian, you are exactly right. she can read a prompter and deliver the speech they want her to give on the stump. but the speech is not tangible. it's not relating to the average day people and there's no -- who is the villain? she continues to say that she is going after the wealthy and the people that are making it. and she keeps saying oh, i'm going to empower the middle class. but she is attacking the very americans that are helping, you know, their family members when they are in this terrible mess right now. i don't think it's resonating with people.

when donald trump talks about the tariff is he saying, look, i'm going to make sure that the jobs are back here. if you want a business, a lot of small businesses in this country right now, make sure your business is here. i'm going to do -- there is going to be less regulation and then there is going to be a 15% corporate tax. it's everything that is tangible to the people that are out there. >> ainsley: that corporate tax is going to effect the small businesses, too. you think corporation, you think walmart. it's not. it's every business will have more taxes. she might give you a break if you open your first business and $50,000. but the corporate tax rate if she win also go up to 28%. no matter what you own -- >> steve: right. that's what she proposed. although it is 10 points less than what joe biden has proposed. ainsley, you touched on an important thing, that is for the people who are listening to kamala harris talk, if you think will opening a small business, her loan thing of 50,000 bucks, that sounds great. if you are thinking about being a first time home buyer, that

$25,000 sounds great. if you have a new baby that $6,000 tax credit is not great. >> ainsley: what if you don't have child care? >> steve: if you are not in one of those categories. yesterday she was talking about investing in ai and stuff like that. new batteries. which would be great. if you are just the average person who is trying to struggle to buy gas or to buy groceries. it's like, okay, that stuff sounds great. but what's in it for me? where's the beef? >> lawrence: to have such a soft interview by raúl and to give her this lay-up to just make it relatable. give us -- what does this play mean? she had no more feedback. >> brian: right. covered some of that she did do an interview later and said some of the questions i didn't get answered. quick thing to her speech we went back and forth on. one thing said totally wrong who put that in there. donald trump only cares about the people in the offices. we care about the people who wire the building and build it. just the opposite.

trump is the one in the building picking up nails, talking to construction workers. dealing with people and the one thing about him if you go to atlantic city and other places he talks to the waiters, he talks to the kitchen help. he talks to the construction workers. he loves that stuff that's like for example an exathlete walking out off the football field he wants to talk to the players. whoever wrote that portion of the speech. you totally fueled trump. >> ainsley: you should say to them you're fired. >> brian: absolutely. just the opposite. >> steve: meanwhile big news down south fox weather alert. hurricane helene is expected to crash into florida's big bend coast as a dangerous cat 4 hurricane some time tonight. >> brian: storm surge warnings are in place for most of the state's west coast and officials warn this could be potentially a deadly event. >> ainsley: let's check in with janice dean for fox weather forecast. when you show those images, it is massive.

>> janice: so massive. in terms of how big this is 500 miles wide. you don't typically see a hurricane that big in the gulf of mexico. there is only a handful of them. it is going to effect much of the state of florida. i also want to make mention we have three three-point line toro warnings. south on the border of georgia. confirmed tornado. you will z. the rotation with this storm. scraping across land and the potential for tornadoes and that's why we have a tornado watch. that's one of the risks as this storm -- i mean, this storm isn't really even close to land and it's already giving us tremendous impacts along florida. here is the track. we are going to get a new advisory at 8:00 a.m. we are expecting rapid intensification. it's category 1 right now. we are expecting category 3 or 4. that's a major hurricane. making landfall across the panhandle. of the big bend of florida. i want to point this out. no major hurricane has ever tracked directly over tallahassee. the path is directly over

tallahassee and that's why yesterday i was urging shannon bream's parents to move west and they did. thank you. because this has never happened. this area is surrounded by trees. we're going to have power outages not only for days, for potentially weeks. very heavy rainfall of over a foot of rain and then storm surge, which is unsurvivable along this coast of upwards of 20 feet. that's over top of you, that's overtop of your home. and that's why this is such a dire situation. it really we have never had a storm like this track over this area of the country in at least a century. water temperatures extremely warm. and that's why we are expecting at least a category 3 storm. upwards of 20-foot storm surge. that's going to take your life. and that's why this is so dire. also want to make mention we are not done with it as it makes landfall. very heavy rainfall across the southeast, including georgia. just south of atlanta, georgia a

hurricane warning. so, this is going to be something we are going to be following for the next several days. all right, guys. i can't stress this. i know we have so much news. but this is affecting americans' lives. millions of them. and it's so important this is a very big deal. >> ainsley: janice, my best friend lives outside of tampa in palm harbor. i think they are deciding to stay. do you think they should leave? >> janice: if you asked me a couple days ago i would say they probably should move inland or northward. now they have to hunker down. i really think this is going to be a tallahassee story. tampa is under a hurricane watch. that means hurricane conditions. that's why it's so important -- you need to know your surroundings. are you going to be flooded? do you need to evacuate? take your family with you. it can't just be up to us and the local officials. >> brian: right. ron desantis will be on later and give us the latest. >> ainsley: if you are there. you all need to move inland.

doesn't exist only when it's someone i happen to support is a target of that investigation. and there's a lot of things with this case that just might be a hair too cute and again, he might be completely guilty. it is a little bit too cute that the police commissioner was hired a week later and his home gets raided for documents. 20 years ago. it's not a coincidence that they raided this campaign staffer's home the day he was going to the white house to tell joe biden to end the migrant crisis. so, this might just be a coincidence, but i don't believe in coincidences. >> lawrence: we are waiting for the indictment to come out so we know some of the charges. allegations all these businesses giving money to his campaign. in return, there would be some calls made to city hall or whatever to get permits and all that every mayor i know of does that. and as honest as we like them to be, they always get

contributions to their campaign. so, are we going to investigate all the rest of them as well? >> right. and that's really the crux of what we are talking about and that's why so many of us are eager for this indictment to be unsealed. if it's a week case than it only goes further imparts of the doj. right now we simply don't know. if it's beyond the scope and beyond taking turkish airline tickets or a free meal or something like that, yeah. it is troubling. and it could end his ma mayoral. >> lawrence: they don't like his response to crime in the city a mayor before that doesn't support the police is he a former cop. he supported the cops here. they have changed. i'm not saying things are perfect in the city right now. there has been a little bit more of going on the offense, right? >> yeah.

and you start. so it was an exciting time. >> ainsley: so 10 years later, after arriving here, you find yourself raising your right hand and reciting the pledge of allegiance and becoming an citia at that moment you would go on to become the first lady of the united states of america. what did that day, becoming a citizen, mean to you? >> i was very proud. i went through the process and that day was a big celebration celebration was very, very proud. >> ainsley: so meeting donald trump. how did you meet him? >> we met at the party. and you could read the whole chapter in the book. >> ainsley: yes. you were at the kit kat club and there was that moment of connection. and you refused to give him your number. and you asked for his number you went on a modeling shoot in the caribbean. while you were down there you couldn't stop thinking about

him. you came home and you called him. what happened? >> we to on the first date if you could call it a date. >> ainsley: it was mixed with professionalism. >> i understand now that i know him more it was so him. i liked in one way about it. because i was the same. and i love the vision that he had. and the connection that we had. so it was very special. >> ainsley: you get in the car and he drives to you bedford outside of the city. what an hour outside of the city. and he wanted to show you a business or some property that he had? >> um-huh. >> ainsley: he was combining business with taking you on a first date. >> it was very nice because we were two of us alone in the car for hour, hour and a half no other noise, no other people because at that time, he was already known as a zit celebrity.

so it was really nice to be just the two of us. >> ainsley: did you fall in love then? >> it was a connection. it was a connection. >> ainsley: you said our chemistry was undeniable. our connection felt natural. in private he revealed himself as a gentleman displaying tenderness and thoughtfulness. did he ever say to you in those early stages or even in that first car ride i'm going to be president one day? >> no. we didn't discuss at that time, no. but soon later, yes? soon later. not that he would be the president but he always was involved in politics. he was very in tune what is going on in the world, especially this country. >> ainsley: six years into the relationship. it's april of 2004, and he proposes to you. >> well, it was -- first of all it was my birthday as well. and it was a gala. it was all in one. we were already at home. both of us in black tie.

so he proposed that time. >> ainsley: describe your wedding day. it was january 22nd, 2005. it was almost a year after you were engaged. and you got married at bethesda by the sea. a beautiful church down in palm beach and then the reception at mar-a-lago. what was that day like for you and your family and your mom? >> it was an exciting day a busy, busy day. as every bride, you want to make sure everything goes smoothly. and we had a good day. >> ainsley: i'm sure there was a touching story in the book about the baptism candle. your mom brought this over from slow vein i can't. it was the candle that was lit in the church when you were baptized. you lit it at your wedding and then you lit it again when barren was baptized. and you still have it, i assume. >> i still have it. interesting, i was baptized on donald's birthday. june 14th. the dates connects. >> ainsley: yes. >> so my mother, she thought

about it and she brought it here to the united states. >> ainsley: and you say in the book about becoming a mother. you said i stepped back from public life. no longer wanted the glamorous photo shoots and jet-setting lifestyle and my career took a backseat. was that a hard change for you? >> it was not, no. >> ainsley: why? >> because i had a different purpose in life. >> ainsley: best day of your life when they put the baby in your arms? >> something changes. yeah. something changes. >> ainsley: there's a picture in the book. and you are working at the desk. and you have barron in one of those small little motorized cars. books, his books, his children's book are all over the floor. you have your papers all over the desk. and i looked at that picture and i said this is a working mom's life. we can all relate to this everything is chaotic and hectic but everything is so much fun and everyone tells us to enjoy those moments because they are fleeting and your kids grow up and it just flies by. when you look at that picture,

what was happening in that moment? >> when i see it, that was the time that i did qvc collection my jewelry pieces. >> ainsley: sold out in 45 minutes? >> it did. it was very successful. i was doing all at the same time. working, playing with barron. he has his own time, with, you know, his car and his books. and we talking. so i think it's very important that we show our children that we are working, too, to give them an example how life is that they see us that, we are productive. that we have ideas. that ideas comes to life that's in barron. >> ainsley: did you and donald trump ever talk about having more children? did you want a larger family? >> i was always perfectly fine. and donald was encouraging to

have more and he said i'm completely fine with one because it's very busy life. and i know how busy he is. and i'm in charge of everything. so, that's why it's just perfect. >> ainsley: so donald was on brian kilmeade's show last weekend. brian was asking him about your relationship. and he said, you know, brian, she really, really does love me. so what do you love most about your husband? >> he's being, his humor, his personality, his kindness, he is very special. his positivity. his energy. it's unbelievable. yeah. so we have a beautiful relationship. we s. >> ainsley: we see these clips of donald trump giving a lady at the cash register $100 to pay for her groceries.

a little boy with a rare disease, he invites him to the rally in new york. and the little boy cries when he receives a letter on his birthday from donald trump. >> um-huh. >> ainsley: donald trump calls all the servicemembers their family members when they lose their lives. these are stories a lot of people you are not going to see this on other networks. is that the man he is. >> that's the man he is. yes. >> ainsley: one word to describe him, what would that be? one or two words? >> caring, especially for this country. >> ainsley: what do the two of you like to do for fun if you are not working? >> to have dinner, sometimes quiet dinner or dinner with friends and listen to the music. all kind of different music. >> ainsley: i hear he likes to be the d.j. >> he likes to be the d.j. and it's very fun night when he does that. >> ainsley: when you married donald trump, he already had four children and you talk about that in the book. and it would seem so fun just to

have so much life and children around you. you said i gave everyone their own space, grounded in love and respect. you didn't always agree but acknowledged differing viewpoints. so what advice do you have for blended families? >> to take the individual as they are. you cannot control anyone. yyou can control only your own behavior, your own words. everybody's in control of own self. i'm not in control of my husband. i'm not in control of his children. i'm not even in control of my child. he is his own person. and we all have yes and nos and we all are all individual. once you live your life with respect and love, that's all that matters. >> ainsley: barron now is so handsome. we have enjoyed watching him grow up. i'm very proud of you for keeping his life private.

i think that's important. barron is now in college. what was that like for you? what advice can you give all of us who are a little nervous about that day because we just love our children so much? what's it like being an empty nester? >> i could not say i'm an empty nester. i don't feel that way. i raised barron as own person and gave him his own yes and nos. i respect that it was his decision to come here wants to be new york and study in new york and live in his home. and i respect that. and he's incredible, young man. i'm very proud of what he grow up to. his strength, his intelligence. his knowledge. his kindness.

he's enjoying his college days. i hope he will have a great experience because his life is very different than any other 18, 19-year-old child. >> ainsley: i was moved to tears in your book when i read about the loss of your mother. and you said this about her loss. there is an unparalleled sorrow in losing a mother. a profound heartache that shatters the spirit into fragments. for me, this heartache feels insurmountable in the weight of grief is overwhelming. it does feel insurmountable sometimes. and let me be strong, but how do we -- what advice do you have because i remember when my mom lost my grandmother, it was devastating. and it really separated her from god for a while. she came back to god. she just had a lot of questions because she felt like he took someone that was so special to her away from all of us. but it made my faith stronger. but what advice do you have for

people that are going through this to lose a parent? >> well, it's a very moment that nobody prepares you. and it's a grief that comes in waves. and you need to feel it. you need to have that inner peace that to go with it. to feel it, to experience it. and first of all, i want to thank all of the people around the world who send a beautiful letters, beautiful prayers, very kind notes, thank you to everybody who -- who wrote me, who thought about me and my family and was really deeply deeply appreciated. >> ainsley: yes. i know she lives on in barron. i remember at her funeral, donald trump talked about how your mom would cook for him and

that's probably why barron is so tall. >> she was very special woman. full of warmth, kindness, and also strength. her life was incredible. in slow crania, she established a life for myself and for my sister, incredible life. also my father, but, her strength was admirable. and once barron was born, he -- he was her focus. she moved here to the united states to be close to him. and to raise him in one way. it's almost like she was a second mother, especially because of my schedule in the white house and being so busy. so, and they had an incredible bond. her and barron, it was a relationship like no other.

died that when you have those waves, just cry. you're allowed to do that. when she said that. i think everyone around the world who has lost a parent can relate to that i was also glad that she shared with us some about barron's life. barron, he accident have a normal college experience. he has to live at home. i didn't know that when i was asking about empty nester. i didn't know that he had to live at home. >> steve: plus, he goes to college. he is always shadowed by guards. i mean, college kids do stuff in college. >> ainsley: can't go to the parties. his life forever changed. is he sacrificing a lot. >> brian: that school wanted him he said i'm going because new york. just a quick thing. the one thing you are pointing out is i just remember every time you saw him in the white house or before that, melania's parents were everywhere. they were really -- even though he has an abnormal life. his name is on every life. trump tower. it was like an extended family. and you knew that the grandparents were close to barron because they went
