you at 3:00 eastern for coverage on this story and "outnumbered" starts right now. >> kamala harris is heading to arizona where she plans to visit the water for the first time as a presidential candidate. a grand jury has indicted multiple people linked to iran on charges related to hacking donald trump's 2024 presidential campaign. eric adams is being arraigned on multiple corruption charges. halloween is heading north -- helene is heading north after making an impact on florida as a category four hurricane. joining me as julie, lee.
9:02 am
as we are tracking hurricane helene, i want to start with you. hurricane sandy, your district was devastated. you dealt with a hurricane like this before. >> it smacked us hard when sandy hit. a lot of people are without power and it starts exposing the weaknesses with energy companies. you really need leadership. this is something governor desantis has proven high capability of. governor kemp is somebody who would be well prepared for a moment like this and you need that executive leadership, the coordination and communication between different levels of government and with your election officials because they will hear from constituents and you need the good information flow. people are without power and they have needs and hopefully this is a moment we see leadership in florida, georgia, and elsewhere shine.
9:03 am
>> i have been getting text messages all night. the images are stunning. the storm surge, things they haven't seen. where this hit was perry, florida, it hit taylor county. i interviewed governor desantis they are the hurricane. >> it has been a lot further residence and first responders. they are getting all the phone calls now with people who have what would be considered minimal but severe damage on their properties. he is saying not now. we are in search and rescue mode. we need to know when people are calling from hospitals or are stranded in their houses or they are so deep and flooding it is an emergency to get to them first. the destruction stretches about 800 miles.
9:04 am
this is going to last weeks, months, something you know well. this is an incredible storm. i was looking at the updates on some of the land slides blocking interstate 40 and now interstate 26 south of asheville. we don't know the vastness of the destruction yet. >> this is a regional event. yes, florida got the worst of it but 3.2 million without power. atlanta, water they haven't seen in quite some time. it is devastating. >> atlanta has never seen rainfall or flooding like this. it is the most important and dangerous part about a hurricane, not to mention the rainfall that came with this. it is unsurvivable, they were calling it. that is incredible. for those who did not evacuate and heed the warnings, those are
9:05 am
the people who are now at the greatest risk, being caught in their cars, being submerged. one couple was caught in a tornado that touched down. the storm surge and the water is what the greatest concern is. >> people think of florida as a big resort state, and it is, a big beach state, and it is but i want to put the emphasis on taylor and dixie county. these people are the salt of the earth. they own restaurants, they have sunk their livelihood into here and to rebuild after one category four and then be hit with another, i don't think you can over emphasize how destructive water is to businesses, homes, to livelihoods. >> also, it is always a reminder
9:06 am
of why you have to be careful about running such huge deficits and running up the debt when times are good, which is what has happened in the last couple of years. the debt is $36 trillion by the end of this year. $2 trillion deficit when the economy is growing just in the last year. you don't do that because you have to prepare for disasters, for rebuilding, and you have to keep your powder dry, so to speak and it is always a reminder of that, reckless spending and deficit spending is so dangerous for the health and safety, literally, of the american people but i want to -- you were talking about the devastation of these blue-collar areas, this storm is going to hit some of the deepest blue-collar states, like tennessee and kentucky and growing up in virginia, my

father talks about hurricane camille, which devastated the commonwealth in 1969, and it literally dumped theoretically the most amount of rainfall. it killed at least 120 people in the state of virginia. it came across through mississippi and it is a stark reminder of the danger of the storm days after it makes landfall and people watching bob rescue that woman out of her automobile, you should not venture out in your car at all if it is raining like that because you will get stuck. it is an important reminder. >> i have friends and neighbors and one text i got hit me. these are families from the midwest to pour their entire livelihood after retirement into small homes and beach towns. one woman flooded four times in one year and she said i need a message of faith and hope right now. four times in one year, your

good to see you. i know you are in tampa. the images i saw overnight from friends and family are shocking. perhaps 7-foot storm surge and parts of tampa? >> six to 7 feet throughout the tampa bay area. that exceeded records in a lot of places and that creates a host of problems. we started at the emergency operations center, we are going to tour some of the sites here, particularly in pinellas county. it is important to point out that as soon as the storm hit, he started to have people calling because they were in distress. between local first responders, a combination of local and state and state teams, there were thousands of missions that were completed. the state was responsible for hundreds of rescues. places like hillsboro, pinellas, they were out there doing that.
9:10 am
you did have some people that stayed and got some surge in those evacuation zones but all the rescue attempts were successful. the second thing is, we are now down, we have had about 1.3 million power restoration since the storm hit and we are down to about 1 million without power. those numbers will continue to go down because we had the cruise stations. they are going in and doing work as soon as it was safe to do. there is a lot going on but, we had this storm hit in a place that has seen two hurricanes in the last 13 months in the big bend part of florida. i am going to be there later today but the initial reports we have been getting from those communities in the big band was that the damage for pauline exceeded the damage of -- and debbie combined. there is going to be a lot of
9:11 am
damage done in those communities, which is bad enough but this comes on the heel of them rebuilding for the last 13 months. i know a lot of people are reeling right now. >> i spoke to you a year ago. we have images we will pull up. you just mention this. the individuals there, i cannot believe i was there a year ago, talked to the residents, they rebuild and now they are facing all of that again. how are they at this very mo moment. >> it is a difficult time. when they deal with these storms, then we had debbie, a category one storm when you
9:12 am
compound it from what happened, then you have helene, which was stronger and has done more damage than both combined. that is something that is going to be very difficult. we are going to have assets to help with this, but the reality is, when you see buildings that have been blown to smithereens that had been in the process of being rebuilt or survive the other storms, that is more than just dollars and cents. it is a gut punch. it is demoralizing. it is going to be trying times in that part of florida. >> an incredible blue-collar part of the state. i want to see if you have an update on fatalities. there is a young person who died on i four because of a fallen sign but do you have any upd
9:13 am
updates? >> that was the first one yesterday. the other one, there was an individual in dixie county, a tree fell on the home and these are free things that can happen. we may end up having more reported because this is a difficult storm but all the rescue attempts that were done, when they went, someone called. they were able to find the person or people and successfully rescue them. that was not the case with hurricane ian, where some of the calls by the time people got there, you had people that drowned in the storm surge. we have not seen that yet but there will be more operations done today for search and rescue and even in places there weren't phone calls and, there are going to be sweeps to make sure people are okay. >> thank you, governor. we have breaking news this hour. the department of justice has

>> we just got the indictment from the department of justice. we are going through it now. three people have been charged. according to the doj, these people were engaged in a hacking campaign that used spearfishing and social engineering techniques to target and compromise the accounts of current and former u.s. government officials, members of the media and individuals associated with u.s. political campaigns. last week we got notification from officials that in june and july, cyber actors sent emails to people linked with biden's reelection team. they had stolen from trump's campaign. several of these organizations,

they did try to hack the biden campaign but with the assassination in there as well and the officials who have to have secret service protection, this seems focused on one individual and should the doj be more clear? >> i think they should be. it is clear. we have evidence that iran does not want donald trump to be the next president. we know iran has been sponsoring or funding some of the anti-semitic protests we have been seeing. the day before the first assassination attempt on donald trump, doj arrested a man with iranian thais who had a plot to kill donald trump. they are aware fbi originating out of iran. the list is lengthy and i think that is why doj, in the last

9:34 am
with biden's campaign. the emails contained an excerpt taken from stolen, nonpublic information from former president 's trump campaign. there is no information indicating the recipients of emails replied. the intelligence community reported that cyber actors had continued their efforts since june to send stolen, nonpublic material associated with trump's campaign to u.s. media organizations. moments ago, the justice department unsealed an indictment, charging three hackers working for the iranian government with material support for terrorism, computer fraud for their roles in these cyberattacks. they are iranian nationals residing in iran.
9:35 am
the defendants conspired with others to deploy a wide ranging hacking operation on behalf of the islamic revolutionary guard corps. the operation targeted the email accounts of current and former american public officials and most recently, individuals associated with u.s. political campaigns. the defendant's own words made clear they were attempting to undermine trump's campaign in advance of the presidential election. we know iran is continuing its efforts to stoke discord, erode confidence in the electoral process and advance its activities to the irg c. a designated foreign terrorist organization. the justice department is committed to countering the

threat they pose to our democracy, our national security, our allies in the community. as we approach the upcoming election, if a justice department will not tolerate attempts by iran or any foreign power to interfere in our elections and undermine our democracy. with our partners across the government, we will use every tool we have to counter and disrupt the efforts of iran, russia, and china, who exploit our democratic system of government. the message of the government is clear. the american people, not a foreign power, decide the outcome of our country's elections. not iran and its cyber activities. not russia and its efforts to spread disinformation and propaganda to secure its
9:37 am
preferred outcome in the u.s. presidential election. and not china, which continues in its efforts to exert targeted influence at federal, state and local levels. as described in multiple previous indictments and the recent election security updates. these authoritarian regimes, which violate the human rights of their own citizens, do not get a say in our democratic process. the american people and the american people alone will decide the outcome of our elections. to the second matter, in just over a week, we will mark one year since the october 7 terrorist attack on israel. on october 72023, terrorists
9:38 am
murdered nearly 1200 people, including more than 40 americans and kidnapped hundreds of civilians. they perpetrated the deadliest massacre of since the holocaust. we are committing to pursuing the responsible terrorists and those who illegally provide them with material support for the rest of their lives. earlier this month, the justice department unsealed charges against senior leaders of hamas for the october 7th attacks and for financing and directing a decades long campaign to murder american citizens and endanger the security of the united states. those charges are one part of our effort to target every aspect of the operations. there will be more to come. in the wake of the october 7 of the tax, we saw a disturbing increase in the volume and

frequency of threats here at home. against jewish, muslim, arab, and palestinian communities. last october i directed our attorneys offices and fbi field offices to meet with local law enforcement and community leaders to strengthen our response to threats of hate fueled violence and that is what we have continued to do since. we recognize the ramifications of october 7th are still being felt in communities across the country. for the jewish community, this has been a time of a renewed, deeply familiar sense of isolation and fear. as we approach one year since the october 7th attacks, we do so at a time when across the country will soon be observing the high holidays of rosh hashanah and yom kippur. this is a period of solemn reflection and prayer.
9:40 am
this is time to gather together to worship and to be in community with each other. it should not be a time of fear. the justice department will investigate and prosecute acts of violence fueled by anti-semitism and hatred of any kind. in recent months, the department has brought charges, obtained plea agreements and sentences for more than 35 defendants for criminal acts motivated by anti-semitic hate. this is in addition to the charges brought by our state and local partners. that work will continue. no person and no community in this country should have to live in fear of hate fueled violence. no faith community should have to fear they will be attacked in their place of worship. the justice department has no higher priority than protecting
9:41 am
the safety and civil rights of everyone in our country. working to uphold that promise is our responsibility and it is one we will never abandon. protecting the safety of our people includes combating violent crime, which is the topic of the third announcement to which i will now turn. from may to september this year, u.s. marshals service with state and local law enforcement partners in ten metropolitan areas arrest more than 3,400 fugitives and violent offenders, including more than 200 wanted for homicide. they seized more than 500 firearms, $500,000 in u.s. currency and over 450 kilograms of illegal narcotics, including more than 550,000 pills of deadly fentanyl. they conducted this operation in

he talked about iran wanting to erode faith in our democracy but specifically mentioned the intent to target the trump campaign, saying let's bring back in our legal editor. he did, as we were speaking about, he did say they were attempting to undermine trump's campaign ahead of the u.s. election. >> he did. i have been critical of him on other matters, even recently but i think he has done a great job of alerting the public and taking the threats against donald trump very seriously. we have heard from him many times the last few weeks. i am not sure what else he could do and say that would indicate anything but he is very serious about this but i think he is concerned about the health of the nation and worried about these bad actors trying to influence the election but more
