part of crisis as we learn hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants previously convicted of crime, murderers, are now living right here in the u.s. welcome back, everyone. i'm sandra smith in new york. >> john: just absolutely stunning news, sandra. i'm john roberts in washington and this is "america reports." the information coming from a letter sent by the acting i.c.e. director detects an republican congressman tony gonzales. the letter revealing migrants convicted of murder and rape were convicted at the border and then released into the country. >> sandra: migrant crime and major concern in border communities like texas where leaders are bolstering their efforts to stop the violent venezuelan gang tren de agua. we had live coverage on all of it. arizona sheriff mark lam and texas republican congressman tony gonzales will join us in moments. >> john: but we begin with

brooke taylor, live in el paso, texas. brooke? >> john, when you hear the gang, 1130s will connect it to here in el paso because we are seeing more venezuelans cross the border here than anywhere else. that is according to cbp data. i sat down with the district attorney here in el paso and he says what they are seeing is the suspected tda gang members moving into other states once across the border here. but this new trend he says is a lot of the suspected gang members will then cross back into el paso. some of the prime examples we are seeing here is the gateway motel. we drove past it. it is literally in the heart of downtown. it was forced to close down because of crime that's been tied to suspected gang members living there. two confirmed tda gang members were also part of the riot at the border last spring. it ended with hundreds of arrests, you may remember. a judge ended up dismissing most of the cases all over a technicality. the d.a. says there is likely

border, because we have to have border security. >> and texas governor greg abbott is now offering a $5,000 reward for anyone who has information leading to the arrest of one of these tda gang members. guys? >> john: brooke taylor along the border, thank you. sandra? >> sandra: let's bring in sheriff mark clam now of pinal county, arizona. thank you very much for joining us. this is obviously huge news. people at home are probably saying we did this is happening but now the numbers are here to back it up. your reaction to the staggering numbers connect 13,000 convicted murderers i write here in the u. >> the outcome of these numbers are staggering. even for some of like myself, he's been talking about this very issue for a long time. just to put it in perspective, border patrol typically averages 20,000 to 40,000 apprehensions a year with people who have been convicted of crimes or are wanted for crimes here in

america, sent back to countries, and how they are trying to come back in. border patrol turns as people over to i.c.e., and what i.c.e. does with them has always been a question. now we are seeing with these numbers that i.c.e. is releasing these people into the public. i will take it a step further -- i am a 287g jail. which means, when somebody is arrested in my county in this country illegally, we work with i.c.e. on that. on the previous administration, 8 of 10 of them, i.c.e. would come pick them up. now i would be surprised if they pick any of them up. that means we are forced to release these folks back into the communities as criminals. so while these numbers are more staggering than even i thought, this issue is not a nine to me. >> sandra: ron vitiello joined us last hour and talked about the threat this is to every american. listen. >> there are people walking among us in almost every single city and town in the united states who are not invited here, that jump to the wall and came into the

united states illegally, and are a cartel member, a gangster of some of the kind, someone abusing children or trafficking other human beings. that is what happens when sanctuary cities conflate with a chaotic border. we are all at risk. >> sandra: that's what we are seeing happen right now. right, sheriff's? >> that's exactly it. when we fail to secure the border -- this is why we talk about it so much, and this is why this is the number one issue for voters. this is exactly why kamala harris is trying to do damage control. after 3.5 years of being the person in charge, she now understands she has to do something about it. now she's -- this is 100% political. i'm glad she's going. we have been asking her to come for 3.5 years. but this is political, and i think she is a day late and a dollar short, and the american people should hold this administration accountable for their failure, because they truly have put american lives at risk every day with their failure to secure the border. >> sandra: weeks away from

election day. you better believe this will be a bigger and bigger issue as the days go on. and a reminder, where harris has stood in the past on border policy. listen. >> i think there is no question that we've got to critically re-examine i.c.e. and its role and the way it's being administered, and the work it's doing. >> let me be very clear. we have to have a secure border, but i am in favor of saying that we are not going to treat people who are undocumented across the border as criminals. >> would you be committed to closing the immigration detention centers? >> absolutely. on day one. [applause] >> as she said in that brand interview where she was questioned about some of her changes on issues, she says her values have not changed, and the american voters heard that, sheriff. finally, this is former president trump yesterday when he was asked, or when he was talking about harris' visit to the border today.
11:09 am
>> she should save her airfare. she should go back to the white house and tell the president to close the border. he can do it with the signing of just a signature on a piece of paper to the border patrol. >> sandra: because she will be tested, sheriff, on why she didn't do more while she is currently in the white house. final thought? >> she should be tested. president trump is right. she should have saved her airfare, because they could have already done something about it. she is a flip-flopper. she's always been a flip-flopper. she's more concerned about getting votes and actually doing what is right in doing her job, and that is -- she is not a good leader. leaders are willing to do the hard work. sometimes you hurt feelings along the way. she doesn't want to hurt anybody's feelings. that really what she's doing is hurting america and the american people by not being a strong leader. >> sandra: we appreciate your time today, sir.

thank you for joining us. >> john: let's bring in tony gonzalez, whose flag is slightly smaller behind him. let me look at these numbers again. these numbers are unbelievable. 13,099 convicted murderers. 15,811 convicted rapists or sexual assaulters have been allowed to come to this country. how does that happen? >> it hasn't happened by chance. when i got the letter back, i was grateful that i got the response, but my stomach turned. my heart sank, to see the numbers on paper. it just goes to show how real the threat is. i look at it through the lens of, my job as a member of congress as a couple of things. one is oversight, to make sure the administration is in fact being transparent in what they do. the other party's preparations and giving the money to areas that need to happen. when i met with the i.c.e. director it was very simple. what is the problem and how do we fix it? when i'm hearing these numbers,

11:13 am
that is, would they be able to find then? where are they? >> a large part of it, too, the men and women of i.c.e. are working their guts out. they are professionals and they want to do the job, but they lack resources and manpower brady look at the problems, the sheer number of people -- and this was as of july, not as of today. the number is only compounding. we really need to dedicate resources, give them the resources they need, but also the policy. as soon as you start deporting some of these people, it lowers. >> john: but do you think a convicted murderer with a nta is going to honor it? >> they're not. that's why we have to actively go after them. i've been pushing for task forces. federally lead and federally funded task forces. antigang tax forces, to go after tda, antitheft task forces. you basically pool all your resources and actively go out. you need to have i.c.e. and all these agencies involved. but we have had enough. we cannot just be waking up to

11:22 am
we highly believed that it's a big possibility. it was very big, and it's one of the biggest attacks after the august 4th attack. so i don't think they were joking around. most probably hidden for at least a few members, high-ranking members of hezbollah, must have died in this blast. >> sandra: now that this has happened, what do you anticipate the coming hours look like here? >> internally, for his followers, it must be once they announced that he is dead, if he is dead. his followers will definitely stir the pot and create problems
11:23 am
inside the communities. however, it would be such a big era that will start after hassan nasrallah is gone. we never know. i think the world -- either hezbollah will decide to throw down their arms and surrender, or if iran wants to keep on playing this game, then it's going to be a few more weeks of israeli attacks on lebanon, and eventually the israeli troops will invade southern lebanon. >> john: for number of years now, you have been very critical of hezbollah and hamas, but also iran, because it is the one that's really pulling all the strings here. >> absolutely. the 7th of october was triggered by iran, john.
11:24 am
what we know almost for sure, and it was just mentioned today at the u.n. speech, i think we are very close to a two-state solution, about to be announced in january 2024. and that was a saudi initiative that was supposed to be announced. it was done, it was almost there. and iran did not like that. iran wanted to keep it stranglehold over the countries it occupies indirectly. lebanon, syria, iraq, and yemen. they were not very happy about that, so they created the 7th of october, but they did not expect it to be successful, that big. they did not expect the reactions of the israelis.
11:25 am
so if we are here today, there are two reasons why the region is on the brink of the huge war, even bigger than what we see today. first, the israelis were stubborn, and they were supposed to accept the two-state solution back in the days of clinton. second, because president obama gave iran a free ride in the region. and president biden continued giving iran a free ride, to a certain extent. and today, if iran is not cornered, if it's not contained, and if there's no two-state solution between palestine and israel, then what you are seeing today will continue to happen over and over again every few years. we will have another one.

by the way, ms. harris has a bad habit of telling untruths on the campaign trail, as joe biden did. this is why trump has a great record to run on from his first term. he did the opposite. instead of more government, he was deregulating. instead of more government, he wants to take that bureaucracy and the swamp in washington and turn it upside down. he's going to have elon musk and a bunch of businessmen to help him. instead of more government with higher taxes, he wants lower taxes. this is not hard to understand, sandra. voters are smarter than you think. >> sandra: you don't have to tell me that x not i completely agree with you. >> they are smarter than you think. they get it. >> sandra: i totally agree with you, but i think both sides need to spell it out for the american voters. by the way, harris doesn't even seem to be selling this to msnbc. i mean, this was a very telling moment in an interview. watch. >> if you can't raise corporate taxes, or if g.o.p. takes control of the senate, where do you get the money to do that?
