7:00 am
and why he was doing what he was doing. as i said, that has sparked controversy, although i understand why the department of justice put that out. they were trying to make their case both in the court of public opinion and the court of law as to what a threat and danger this individual is and how serious it is. attorney general garland has done everything he can do to show the department of justice is taking this as seriously as possible and that they're willing to bring the full weight of the law against this individual. >> bill: that letter, i believe, said it was quoted as saying finish the job. and your former boss, the a.g. bill barr said it was entirely unnecessary, why release that letter? is he right about that? was it necessary? >> i have a bit of a different take on this. reasonable minds can disagree. i believe if d.o.j. had not released the letter and it came out later on which it would have whether through court fileings
7:01 am
they have been accused of hiding and not being transparent about the attempted assassination of a former president and political opponent. i completely understand why they re leased it. calculation they decided it was better to release than not but it did spark controversy. >> bill: we'll be with you later today when the appearance is underway in florida. thank you, kerri. >> communities have taken a beatdown and they will need to rebuild. people want the dignity to buy the dipers in the sizes they want, the formula they want. the pet food they want. >> dana: humanitarian need in north carolina. in moments we expect to hear from florida governor ron desantis as emergency crews work to clear debris, restore power, get food, water, and fuel to folks, diapers to folks trapped by flash flooding and washed out
7:02 am
roadways. welcome to a new hour of "america's newsroom," i'm dana perino. good morning again. >> bill: i'm bill hemmer. the images are stunning. five or six states cover such a wide area. 100 people confirmed dead. hundreds missing. millions without power. as the floodwaters begin to recede there is still a threat of potential landslides. western north carolina left reeling along with eastern tennessee. the governor of north carolina roy cooper called it an unprecedented tragedy that requires an unprecedented response. we'll hear from president biden later this hour on disaster relief efforts. meanwhile the er president, donald trump, putting boots on the ground today in southern georgia, the town of valdosta, while the v.p. kamala harris heads to washington to get a briefing from fema late this afternoon. from valdosta, let's begin this hour with alexandria hoff. >> former president trump will be arriving here later this afternoon. he plans to get a briefing on
7:03 am
the devastation and deliver remarks and help distribute some supplies. the need for help here is abundantly clear. you have to look around and drive around a little bit and stunning. 30,000 people are still without power here. georgia power estimates services won't be restored until saturday at the earliest including other parts of the state as well. georgia alone the overall death toll has reached at least 15. that includes children. eerie, pennsylvania last night former president trump sent love and prayers to the families of those who lost their lives. >> all of those who are displaced and suffering in the wake of the hurricane's destruction and the south especially in florida, georgia, alabama, tennessee and in particular western north carolina took a tremendous hit, it has been absolutely devastated and god be with you all. >> trump also hit at vice president harris attending fundraisers out west and
7:04 am
president biden for his location. >> and joe biden in delaware sleeping now in one of his many estates. one of his many estates. >> this morning vice president harris is travel back to washington canceled planned campaign stops and heading to the fema headquarters where she will receive a briefing. she said this in las vegas last night. >> i received an operational briefing from fema director, more than 3300 federal personnel have been mobilized. we're deploying food, water and generators and working to restore water and power. >> according to the white house, both vice president harris and president biden plan to come down to affected areas to tour and to visit. they say they want to do so at a time when it won't disrupt response efforts. meanwhile former president trump after being here in georgia will head to north carolina later this week, bill. >> bill: thanks, alexandria hoff
7:05 am
watching that in val does take, florida. >> dana: kayleigh mcenany, former white house press secretary and ari fleischer, both former white house press secretaries. great to have you both with us. a lot of people who are reeling from this storm, they don't care about politics right now. they need answers, they need competence. but they are in battleground states. so how do you see this playing out? trump will be in georgia, she is coming back and the president is going to speak at 10:30. >> devastating when you see 100,000 in asheville who might not have drinking water for weeks according to a public release from the city. it is jarring. a lot of my friends and neighbors in florida were sending images from the weekend and shocking. people who lost their livelihood >> president trump is very good when it comes to engaging with
7:06 am
people and disaster' leaf. a storm that hit louisiana hours before the republican national convention, the final night when trump was going to give his speech. he wanted to send a message and to be a commander-in-chief and said i thought about delaying my convention speech. he ended up not doing that. two days later he was in the area giving disaster relief. i think this is another effort to show he can lead on these issues. >> bill: picking up on that. georgia today and what alexandria is reporting he will go to north carolina this week. >> he terms in empathy and caring he arranged for the briefing in georgia to be informed about everything that happened. kamala harris has waited four days after landfall for her to announce she is returning. george bush waited two days after katrina and hammered with how long he took.
7:07 am
she has taken twice as long. katrina in so many ways in 2005 was the first break in the dam where the press started to pound republicans and bush, to get rid of neutral journalism and expose their bias. they won't do that to harris. that same trend continues. they'll protect her, not criticize her the way they criticized bush. that's the facts about what is happening here even though she took twice as long. >> dana: years later in 2010 oprah winfrey apologized for her criticism at that time. setting that aside the fact that harris was in nevada. a quote this weekend was interesting because of the nature of it being such a battleground. a 24-year-old worker at a local amusement park said he is skeptical of both candidates. i have had friends flip on a dime. they could change their votes tomorrow based on the gas price. when you have a small group of undecided voters to go either way they keep going back to
7:08 am
especially nevada. only four votes there, three or four. >> bill: six. >> it's a razor close election. that could be determined by a few thousand voters. we have never seen polls this close. pollsters haven't seen this. i was looking at pennsylvania real clear politics and scan down the polls, tie, tie, tie. deadlock. voters can change their mind. these groups matter. when i see cnn their aggregate shows kamala may be the worse performing voters for union voters in a -- trump is good with these groups. >> bill: there is a drift on hispanic americans, too, in addition to that. go ahead, what do you think? >> also african-american and jewish americans. some of the key swing groups. hispanics and blacks swung toward trump. he did better in 20 than in 16 even though he loss.
7:09 am
he did worse with college educated and suburban voters. that was the difference between winning and losing. the trends are still in place. trump will do better in 2024 with blacks, hispanics and american jews, he will do worse with college educated suburban women. so close in the only seven states that matter. the seven battleground states. if you thought major league baseball had a complicated way of determining who wins a wild card, wait until the presidential election ends in a tie. >> dana: tomorrow night is the debate between vance and walz, the vice presidential candidates. walz has been hidden away from the national media. content to deploy walz as a cartoon than a character. juice him up on diet mountain due and send him on the stage. the campaign is trapped him in the protective bubble wrap placed around harris and biden
7:10 am
before her. not playing to win but playing not to lose. a comment from both of you about what you expect tomorrow night. >> such a visual description. the bubble wrap in biden and walz and harris. he sat with you when biden stepped aside and he is good in that format. they have kept him away from the format. cnn said walz is nervous about his debate and aides know there is some risk he hasn't been out in interviews and might come off as rusty. they say their hands are tied because they can't draw a contrast with kamala harris, who doesn't prefer the interview format. interesting to see how that muscle not being exercised plays out tomorrow. >> bill: years ago on sunday, cbs used to do a pre-game show with the two categories listed. the intangibles. what are the intangibles for tuesday night. >> it will be the visible image that they present. if walz is the same goofy guy
7:11 am
with the hand gestures and giving the finger to people he will look weird and everybody say this guy is a vice president? i think jd vance by the fact that he goes regularly on sunday shows he is ready to take fast balls down the plate and hit them. he is practiced. walz is not. >> dana: great to have you both. wow. stick around. >> bill: i have to be a press secretary. i don't fit in here. thank you. i want to take you to florida right now. the governor ron desantis getting ready to speak. we'll find out what he says. look at this. this is up and down the west coast of florida. and man, it goes into georgia and south carolina and tennessee and north carolina. this is some storm from helene. we'll bring you there momentarily. in the meantime roll this. mike pompeo on the middle east. watch.
7:12 am
>> the united states of america says good riddance to nasrallah and the leadership of hamas, we know this is driven by the iranian regime and we the united states are prepared to allow and encourage and provide assistance so that israel can finish the job. >> bill: israel is keeping up the pressure wiping out hezbollah's chain of command, wiping out its leader who has led to group for decades. now said to be gearing up to launch ground operations in southern lebanon. we'll see whether or not that happens. is the biden-harris team learning any lessons how to fight terror? >> dana: president biden set to speak minutes from now about hurricane helene amid widespread destruction and suffering across the southeast.
7:13 am
7:14 am
7:15 am
if you're a veteran wife, homeowner, and the family bookkeeper, you're the first to know when high rate debt is stressing your budget. but your family's service has earned you a big advantage. the va home loan benefit. with the lower rate newday 100
7:16 am
va cash out loan, you can pay off high rate credit cards and car loans. that's real money you can use to take care of your family and home.
7:17 am
>> dana: welcome back as our coverage of hurricane helene and
7:18 am
the after math continues we're monitoring a press conference by governor ron desantis directly west of gainesville in florida. lots of damage in florida as well as we continue also to look at the devastation up and down all the way up to north carolina and eastern tennessee. we'll continue to monitor this for news. he is as usual a competent governor gettings things up and running as soon as possible. >> bill: he comes prepared what we've done and what we need to do. desantis continues thatment look for more press conferences throughout the morning and into the day today. a big story. 45,000 u.s. port workers set to go on strike at midnight tonight. no new talks are scheduled between the labor unions representing them and the u.s. maritime alliance employer group. work stoppage said to be a massive blow to the u.s. economy. 36 different ports. it will take place at ports in the state of maine to texas rattling u.s. supply chains and
7:19 am
driving prices higher. j.p. morgan says the strike could cost the u.s. $5 billion a day. we'll be on that as well. >> dana: here is ron desantis here. >> this is going to be a massive effort. the state is collaborating with county emergency management partners to open recovery shelters with the impacted area to be connected to resources and teams to assist with finding solutions to any barriers that may exist. we're also working now with the department of emergency management working to provide travel trailers for people to live on their property. some homes are totally gone, which is a very tragic thing. other homes had major flooding. maybe they have to muck and gut the interior. you don't want to have to travel an hour and sleep and then come back to work on your homes.
7:20 am
they have put travel trailer on your property and you are able to do that and can work and have people come in and supervise that. it is much better. people like that better. we've mobilized hundreds of trailers around the state and willing to get hundreds more if needed. if you need a travel trailer brought to your property go through hope florida. the hope line is now 24/seven and the number is 833-get hope. you can request a travel trailer and hope florida will work to get that done. we have hope buses now available for in-person service for communities impacted by the storm. on saturday almost immediately after the storm we had hope buses deployed to taylor and madison counties and pasco and manatee over the weekend. now we have five hope buses, bridge, church in madison 9:00 a.m. to 12.
7:21 am
alton church of god family life center in mayo, 12 to five. james p. gills family ymca of west pasco and trinity ten to two. if you do go -- you can call the hope line, too. you don't have to go to the bus. if you go to the bus they can link you with resources that are available not just government resources and not even primarily government resources. we are with operation rubicon, a lot of need for muck and guts. they perform those services. other services are available and we'll funnel it through hope florida. the hope buses are there and coming to other places as well. our state housing initiative partnership, every year we fund this. it is to help with temporary relocation, rental assistance
7:22 am
and home remove. not only for storms but something we do anyway. if you want to look for ship resources, go to florida housing.org. florida housing.org. fema has granted individual assistance to a number of florida counties, including charlotte, citrus, dixie, franklin, hernando, hillsborough, jefferson, manatee, pasco, sarasota, taylor and others. we've been approved for public assistance for those counties and more and also have hazard mitigation grant programs. you are eligible. the counties in the state of florida to apply for those grants. now today we're pleased the make the following announcement. as you see, there is damage to homes but also damages to businesses and so you look at roy's restaurant. very important part of the community. very important restaurant here for so many folks.
7:23 am
that got hammered by the storm. they are not able to operate out of the restaurant right now and they will need major rebuilding. linda wicker, the owner, has vowed to rebuild. in the meantime they wanted to figure out what options they have to stay afloat. they wanted to utilize a food truck that has been donated to them to be able to host restaurant operations from that site. i know a lot of people will rally. i know a lot of our first responders will eat there and spend a lot of money there. so it could be very good. but you have bureaucracy. so the bureaucracy was saying well, we don't know, it's not the way to do it. my message is i don't have time for bureaucracy. we don't have time for red tape. [applause] so we are here to announce that i've directed the department of business and professional regulation to issue an emergency order so that businesses like roy's that were devastated in
7:24 am
hurricane helene and want to be created can stay in business. dbpr energy order will allow the food truck to begin serving food and drinks to patrons while they are rebuilding their standing restaurant. we want businesses to be able to return to normal operations as soon as possible. but in the meantime, we want them to be able to stay in business. >> bill: such a big story now. that's in florida. want to move to georgia right now. we're hearing from brian kemp the governor. drop in on him. >> marti and i have flown not only in valdosta but columbia, richmond county today. this hurricane looks like a 250 mile wide tornado has hit. the thing unusual about this storm. unprecedented for a cat 2 hurricane to make landfall in georgia. to see the level of destruction that a hurricane can do in this
7:25 am
community being this far from the florida line is unprecedented. we have -- i would just like to say our thoughts and prayers continue to be with all these people who have lost their life, families and our local communities. so many of our fellow citizens struggling there. we know people are frustrated and tired. we know that they need power back on, need resources and we are working 24/seven to deliver that. you will hear that from director and general wilson here in a minute. also want you to know that today the georgia supreme court is going to issue a statewide judicial emergency for 30 days for those unable to fulfill the timeline because of the storm.
7:26 am
the chief justice will put information out on that and want to make sure this community knew that. i spoke to president biden last night about 5:00 just about the storm, about the devastation we've seen in our state. vice president harris and i have been playing phone tag. i know that former president trump will be in valdosta today getting a briefing from our folks but also hearing from the locals in regards to storm response. i know senator warnock is here today. senator ossoff was here saturday. we've been in communications with congressman rick allen and congressman scott was with us yesterday. just know we will work in a bipartisan way on disaster relief in this state without -- with all partners. we have submitted an emergency declaration. something that is very rare but
7:27 am
it will help us, i feel certain it will be approved by president and federal partners. this will help us get money flowing quicker to our state. also i've been texting back and forth and got a voicemail last night from fema administrator she was in georgia yesterday and visited with our director and he can speak to that if there is anything we need to know about that. on the power update. at one point our highest total of outages was 1.3 million customers. we were told saturday, they represent a lot of rural counties down there and hurricane idalia, the worst storm they had ever seen they had 500 polls broken. this storm they have 1,000. emc's have restored 208,645
7:28 am
customers. they had 435,000 out at peak. obviously our emcs are dealing with rural areas. it is a lot harder to get to and takes a lot more time. normally there are a lot more trees blocking strong stretches of roads they need to go down. so just keep that in mind as they continue to respond. georgia power at peak had 820,000 customers out. they have 370,000 out. so i know a lot of people are frustrated with power but just know things are getting done and when you have literally several hundred thousand people back online now, that allows them to move resources to really affected areas like augusta. i think as the next couple of days unfold you'll see more consolidated efforts in communities like this, valdosta and other hard-hit areas and we'll continue to do everything
7:29 am
we can. at last count georgia power had 15,000 people responding to the storm when you think about not only the linemen but other people organizing their response. marti and i had the opportunity to visit with some of the line crews this morning prior to the press conference and i asked them what they were working on. they are troubleshooting and fixings things that they can fix with what they have on their truck but also doing a lot of reconnaissance work, if you will, sending information back to the supply teams letting them know how many poles and wires and switches they need. even though it may seem at times that there is not work going on, there is a lot of work going on. there is so much damage and takes so much coordination and assessment that it is just going to take some time. just know they are working extremely hard and we're very appreciative of that. the ceo for georgia power, kim green, has been saying this is
7:30 am
the most devastating storm they've ever had to deal with in the state of georgia. they feel like they have over 5,000 poles that are damaged and over 9,000 spans of wire that are down. obviously this is a massive storm. lastly before i turned it over to general wilson on the department of transportation commission. most state routes are now passable, at least one lane open. we do still have 573 damaged traffic signals. we've repaired 417. if the media can help us get the word out to citizens, if you come to an intersection where a traffic signal is out, treat that like a four-way stop. no matter how big that intersection is. treat that as a four-way stop. we have had some very dangerous things happen over the last couple of days by people not
7:31 am
adhering to those rules of the road and blowing through signals that are out. if you can help us spread the word on that we would be grateful. with that i will turn it over to general wilson. then you will here from the director and congressman allen and we have a host of local officials up here as well. we'll be glad to take your questions. >> he is in augusta, georgia, on the eastern border with south carolina. south carolina across the border have 25 fatalities reported. you follow the news over the weekend from the counties surrounding atlanta and then the valdosta, georgia, hundreds of miles from where he is president trump will be there later. he described it as a 230 mile wide tornado. that's extraordinary. >> dana: president biden is about to give an update. we'll squeeze in a quick break and we'll be right back. >> bill: more on the federal response to hurricane helene and we'll bring it to you as gets
7:32 am
underway. we haven't seen roy cooper from north carolina, ron desantis is still talking. stand by. a lot to get to on this monday morning.
7:33 am
7:34 am
my name is brayden. i was five years old when i came to st. jude. i'll try and shorten down the story. so i've been having these headaches that wouldn't go away. my mom, she was just crying. what they said, your son has brain cancer.
7:35 am
it was your worst fear coming to life. watching your child grow up is the dream of every parent. you can join the battle to save the lives of kids like brayden, by supporting st. jude children's research hospital . families never receive a bill from st. jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food, so they can focus on helping their child live . what they have done for me, my son, my family-- i'm sorry, yeah. life is a gift, especially for a child battling cancer. call or go online and help save another lives of children like brayden. now, i'm 11 years old. we were actually doing the checkup for my brain. and they saw something in my throat. it's thyroid cancer. it was heartbreaking to find out that he has cancer again.
7:36 am
but we knew who we had behind us. it just gives me hope. you can make a difference. join with your credit or debit card for only $19 a month. and we'll send you this st. jude t-shirt. without st. jude or its donors, we would have been in a bad place. these kids, they've done nothing wrong in the world. finding a cure for childhood cancer, it means everything. help st. jude give kids with cancer a chance. [audio logo] ah, these bills are crazy. she has no idea she's sitting on a goldmine. well she doesn't know that if she owns a life insurance policy of $100,000 or more she can sell all or part of it to coventry for cash. even a term policy. even a term policy? even a term policy! find out if you're
7:37 am
sitting on a goldmine. call coventry direct today at the number on your screen, or visit coventrydirect.com. >> bill: 10:36 in washington waiting on the president. joe biden will come out and talk about the efforts on behalf of fema and others to help the hundreds of thousands of people and god knows how many people need the help based on the press conferences we're watching right now in response to helene, which record ashore at a cat 4 in the hann handle of florida and did damage after that. >> dana: because of that, fox corporation has made a donation to the red cross's hurricane helene relief efforts. you can also help by going to red cross.org/fox forward or scan the qr code. a lot of people need the help. israeli prime minister netanyahu addressing the iranian people saying their leaders stand in the way of better times and this
7:38 am
is coming as israel plunges hezbollah into complete disarray by killing their chief in a daring attack and wiping out the entire group's chain of command. i want to bring in a former policy advisor to president bush and host of the podcast call me back. dan, we cannot understate the significance of this for israel and for the jewish people. but i also felt that it showed western civilization, what it was like to feel they were on offense against terrorism. >> i would say when prime minister netanyahu spoke at the u.n. last friday and also when he spoke to the u.s. congress a little over a month ago, he said that this victory, israel will win. this will be israel's victory but it will also be america's victory. i think that was an important point for two reasons. one, no terrorist organization with the exception of al qaeda that has more american blood on
7:39 am
its hands than hezbollah going back to the embassy bombing and the bombing of the marine bare yaks in beirut in the early 80s all the way to the leader of the forces, the elite commander force of the special force of hezbollah that when i was in irre iraq was responsible for a lot of soldiers. here israel is now decimating this terrorist organization that has been slaughtering americans for decades. so that is very important. justice is served a. b, to your point. sending a message what it is like to actually say no we won't do a cease-fire. you can't launch a war against israel and call for a cease-fire. if you look at every mini war waged against israel. 96 lebanon, 2002 in the west bank from palestinian jihadists,
7:40 am
2006 lebanon war, mini wars launched by hamas against israel in 2009, 2014, 2021, every one of these wars with the exception of the 2002 war every one ended with a call on israel for a cease-fire after war was unleashed on israel and israel is told you can't respond the way you planned. we need to implement a cease-fire. here israel is saying no, no cease-fire. we'll decimate the enemy. an important message for the world and the united states. >> dana: ever since october 7th president biden has been saying to israel take the win. and instead israel said we'll press our advantage. when it comes to iran what do you think is next? >> you know, i don't know. but i think if israel has continuing to move against hezbollah and then over the last 24 hours hitting the houthis pretty aggressively in yemen again, which is in the interest
7:41 am
of the united states and the world. israel is hitting the houthis in yemen and i -- you know, all signs are -- will they pursue some kind of massive regime change in iran? i don't think israel has the capability to do that. israel could only do that in partnership with the u.s. and gulf allies in the middle east. i do think that israel is -- when it took out the head of hamas in tehran a couple of months ago. that was a message to iran, we have the capability to conduct a military operation in the heart of your regime. in your capital. and so whether it's full on war or continued operations like we've seen inside iran, i think we will see some action. >> dana: thanks for getting on with us today. we know how busy you are. >> bill: changing times. pay attention, right? waiting for ryan routh's
7:42 am
arraignment in court facing new charges for allegedly trying to kill the former president. plus an urgent warning from a democratic senate candidate who wants to win in the state of michigan. is kamala harris underwater in that must-win state? we'll check it out.

7:45 am
veteran homeowners, car payments are getting out of control. get a newday 100 va cash out loan at lower mortgage rates to pay off those high rate car loans.
7:46 am
7:47 am
>> bill: another update from hurricane helene in the after math. the death toll 106 in six different states. robert wray joins us near the tennessee border in asheville, north carolina. what do you see now, robert? >> bill, that number has just risen as far as the death count all morning. unbelievable actually. we just got an update from a
7:48 am
county where asheville is located. on a zoom giving updates. here is the headlines right now. the shelters are full, at capacity here. they are asking people to just sit tight. they are trying to figure out that situation. another interesting piece of discussion trying to get clarification on what was mentioned in that county zoom is the fact that fema is not at the shelters that are at capacity. trying to figure out what's happening on that end. cell phone service is very spotty. it is taking dips on the map and issue with communication all over this region of western north carolina and even south carolina and tennessee right now. that is why there are search and rescues still going on in some of the remote areas because people have no communication. sell phones don't work and can't get in touch with people to let them know they are okay.
7:49 am
missing persons as the death count continues to go up. power is a major issue. over across multiple states we're looking at over 1 1/2 million customers still without power. food and water is essentially run out. unless people can get to some of these aid groups set up makeshift stations, but beyond that we're in a very bad situation that continues to be fluid and good news has not come as of now on monday. >> bill: robert wray, asheville, north carolina and we'll be in contact with you for some time. 107 the number. got a warning for democrats. election day, tomorrow will be five weeks. congresswoman slotkin wants to be a u.s. senator from michigan reportedly telling donors internal polling shows harris is underwater in michigan. john thune republican out of
7:50 am
south dakota with his lay of the land. what she said on the zoom last week. i'm not feeling me i best about where we are. we have her underwater in our polling. as a caveat politicians talk about that a lot to get more money. democrats have a ton of money. why suggest something like that? is she right? >> i think they're worried. they should be. if you look at the state of michigan, the policies of this administration, the ev mandate that crushes jobs, with union workers or 20% inflation, or an absolute open southern border, those are the issues, i think that, that voters in michigan care a lot about. democrats are all wrong on those from kamala harris down ballot to slotkin. and we're starting to see really positive movement and momentum in those senate races. i think at the presidential level you'll see it to in the rust belt states. >> dana: senate toss-ups based on power ranksings. nevada and ohio, we dept talk
7:51 am
about those senate races. how are those right now? >> i was in iowa yesterday and nevada the day before that. those states are very much in play. we have great candidates who are working incredibly hard who have been out spent through much of the campaign in the summer months but starting to catch up. getting their message on the airwaves and prosecuting the case against the democrats on runaway inflation and the fact that groceries are over 20% higher than they were when biden and harris took office to energy and everything else. i think we're seeing movement in our candidates' direct because the voters are now dialing in to issues they care the most about. those work for us. >> bill: this is a point that needs to be point. democrats have a ton of money. it is 2-one in michigan across the board. arizona through wisconsin. here is where "the new york times" has these battleground states. wisconsin dems up two.
7:52 am
