>> steve: it is 7:00 here on the world's most famous couch in new york city. welcome to wednesday, october 7th, 2024 edition of "fox & friends." our lead story, tim walz the governor and j.d. vance the senator, making their pitch to americans last night. in what will likely be the only vice presidential debate. here's a highlight. >> kamala harris is bringing us a new way forward. she is bringing us a politics of joy. she has been the vice president for three and a half years. we need a new direction. >> brian: joy? >> ainsley: joy. >> steve: lawrence is in battleground michigan talking to

voters there. they are happy he is there you will hear from had them shortly. >> ainsley: good crew out there, lawrence. the dock workers hitting the picket lines for a second day, disrupting shipping on the east coast. we're going to ask the speaker of the house, mike johnson, about how congress will address the economic fallout in just a few moments. >> brian: israel vowing revenge. revenge as lauren launches a barrage of nearly 200 missiles in unprecedented attack. pete hegseth on the widening war and what netanyahu has pledged to do. >> steve: while you were sleeping we actually started at 5:00 a.m. so this is the third hour of this special edition of "fox & friends" and it starts right now. ♪ >> ainsley: we begin this hour with a fox news alert. the port strike now on its second day. effectively shutting down 36 major shipping hubs along the east coast and the gulf coast. >> oh my goodness, container ships already beginning to back up. this work stoppage threatens the

supply chain and the broader economy. >> steve: bryan llenas is live sea port terminal in brooklyn, new york. brian, i know the strikers feel like they have got leverage because, you know, companies like volkswagen, they can't bus in their cars from europe. they need ships. and those are the guys who offload them. >> we need bugs. >> yeah. absolutely. good morning, guys, they do feel like they have leverage given the timing here about a month before the election. and obviously, right before the holiday shopping season, so they are definitely flexing that leverage. i want to tell you a little bit about where we are at. this is the red hook terminal. this is part of the new york of new york and jersey third largest port in the united states. as you can see people have been picketing this morning. they arrived here at midnight. one of the union heads here forecast international longshoreman's association tells us they have been barred from speaking to the press. they are not allowed to speak to us. the only person who he is allowed to speak to us is the

head of the union, harold daggettt. so we won't be able to hear from them. we do know that the ila says that the maritime alliance, that is the shippers and the port companies, they say that their latest deal has fallen way short of their demands. the alliance offering dock workers a 50% wage increase, boosting the top earners from $39 per hour to about $58 per hour. the dock workers union says no, it wants a 77% wage increase. or $69 an hour. the dock workers union also says it wants guarantees of no automation or semi automation. they want none of it whatsoever. the man leading the charge as i said is a union boss, harold daggettt. is he earning a whopping $728,000 a year for leading the international longshoremen's union. retailers are now pressuring the white house to get involved and to end this strike by invoking the taft-hartley act. and in a statement, president biden making clear that's not

happening. writing, quote: collective bargaining is the best way for workers to get the pay and benefits they deserve. i have urged umax a group of foreign owned carriers to come to the table and present a fair offer to the workers of the ila that assures they are paid appropriately in line with invaluable contributions. guys, speaking to the union head here off camera, they did tell me that about 90 workers today will not be on the picket line and instead will be working to offload the cruise ships. they say they don't feel like that new yorkers and the common folks should suffer because of this strike and that is why they are doing that and offloading these cruise ships today which will mean a lighter load in terms of the picket line that they're having here in front of the red hook port. so, that's the latest here from brooklyn and i will say there are about 100,000 containers that are now stuck at the port and they are expecting about 35

ships to now be left idle. they will not be able to port. >> a lot of the union members are democrats, a lot of them, however, do support donald trump. do they realize how much it hurts kamala harris politically? >> you know, i got to tell you the quick off camera comments i have had so far speaking to the union. i will say they are not talking from a macrolevel of politics. one of the guys told me i have three kids to run through college here. i'm trying to get them through college. this is very much a microsituation. people here are thinking about their own personal financial situation. and they feel like, given what they did during the pandemic, and given the 20% inflation that we're now experiencing year over year that they deserve. this and they will also point to the fact that the workers on the west coast are already making

$55 an hour plus and that they were successful in their negotiations with the port workers on the west coast and so, they see that and they feel like here on on the east coast d gulf coast they diseervet same. >> ainsley: brian, they said no to a 50% increase they want 80%. is there any room for negotiation? would they take 65%? >> brian: can you ask one? brine brine that is the negotiation, they were offered $58 an hour, they want 69, could they meet in the middle? maybe. if you listened to harold daggettt yesterday when he was speaking to our lydia hu there doesn't seem to be any room of negotiation right now. they don't feel like they want to budge. they have the leverage. there is no sign here that they're going to relinquish that leverage. the last time there was a port strike here nationally, you are talking about 2002. that was an 11-day strike.

this is just day two. so there is precedence for this to go much longer. >> brian: wow. >> ainsley: thank you, bryan. >> steve: great conch, thank you, sir. >> brian: november is coming quickly. match up in manhattan, the first and only likely only vice presidential debate in the books nominees keeping it very civil. >> ainsley: plus, the policy heavy debate not without controversy. the cbs rules barred moderators from fact-checking the candidates. j.d. vance called them out when they did it anyway. >> thank you, governor, and to clarify for our viewers springfield, ohio springfield does have large number of haitian legal status temp protected. >> margaret the rules were you weren't going to fact-check. since you are fact-checking me i think it's important to say what is actually going on. >> steve: they should have just given him 15 seconds and let him explain. >> brian: they cut his mic. >> steve: instead it felt like 3

on 1. meanwhile as you can see screen right right there. governor walz taking an awful lot of notes and stumbled when trying to defend harris' record and his own past comments when he listened last night he said embarrassing stuff before. >> you said you were in hong kong during the deadly tiananmen square protest in the spring of 1989. minnesota public radio and other media outlets are reporting that you actually didn't travel to asia until august of that year. can you explain that discrepancy? >> my community knows who i am. they saw where i was at. they -- look, i will be the first to tell you i have poured my heart into my community. i tried to do the best i can. but i have not been perfect. i'm a knuckle head at times. being there, the impact it made. the difference it made in my life. i learned a lot about china. i hear the critiques of this. i would make the case that donald trump should have come on one of those trips with us. >> governor, just to follow up on that, the question was can

you explain the discrepancy. >> all i said on this was i got there that summer and misspoke on this so i will just -- that's what i've said. so i was in hong kong and china during the democracy protest. >> brian: right. knuckle head at times. that covers it. it never really answered the questions we had about the dui. did he get one he? said he drove to train station dizzy turns out he had a dui. mischaracterization of military service those are things that have come up before. and head coach of a football team or assistant coach. these are minor things after a while they pile up and just say i'm a knuckle head or not good with grammy, lawrence, i don't . tiananmen square is the newest one. maybe that's why he doesn't do any interviews at all, ever. ♪ i feel a little stunned

because i felt he was confident. they didn't want him to overshadow kamala harris. but he is not much better. and the moderators tried to not just help him with the fact-checks but there were several times where they tried to give him a lay-up and piggyback off of j.d. vance's answer do you want to respond to that almost encouraging him do you have something to say to retort this? i'm not sure it helped. i mean, when you look at the independent voter dials and just people -- if you are a reasonable person watching the debate, just trying to get content. most of the country is split up. there is like 5% to 6% of independent voters who just want the facts to see where both sides stand. vance clearly won that debate it wasn't even close. >> ainsley: refreshing to see two guys so polite to one another. >> brian: i liked it. >> ainsley: i did, too. j.d. vance, i think you, talking

about tim, that you want to solve this problem but i don't think kamala wants to. they were nice to each other. they were very polite. and i think that because they were so nice it toned down the rhetoric from the moderators. i thought the moderators came in a little hot in the beginning especially during the fact-check moments that we're going to show you in a minute. they toned it down and sounded nicer. didn't fact-check anymore. didn't cut the mics. >> steve: they were very respectful. they started with a handshake. you know, it kind of was a throwback to debates of yes, sirrer year. lawrence you mentioned the independent voter. there were a bunch of staff polls yesterday, cbs says vance won by 1. cnn vance won by three did a snap poll, people found it a tie, 550/50 tie regarding independents. that's why i bring it up because you mentioned them. 58 percent said walz won.

and 42 percent said vance won. however, and awful lot of independents said i didn't watch. that's a problem. >> brian: i can't make them watch. i can ask them to. the good news is for jim gaffigan, he has a lot to work with this "saturday night live." he plays tim walz. he has got 90 minutes to play with. not just a few appearances. it should be interesting. >> ainsley: vance answering every question he went back to how great donald trump's record was and how bad hers was. i thought that was very smart. >> lawrence: very smart. >> steve: lawrence, you have got a focus group right behind you at the steak and egger there in michigan. >> lawrence: let's talk with some folks. [applause] gosh. >> lawrence: tell me, who do you think won the debate and why? >> pretty obvious j.d. vance won that debate. >> lawrence: why is that? i'm going to let you chew a

little bit. pardon me. i'm sorry. let's go to you, ma'am, how do you feel about the debate last night? >> i really did watch all of it, i just saw a little bit of it. i really did think vance was great. >> lawrence: why is that? >> well, just the things that he stands for, you know. he is genuine. is he real. he is what we really need. >> lawrence: thank you so much. what about you, ma'am? what do you think about last night's debate performance in the governor tried to apologize in some way or say, you know, he misspoke when it came to him being in china during the protest. did you believe him though? >> well, i didn't see that. i watched the first half hour. and i felt he looked scared and like a bully. i didn't think he did that well from what i saw. >> lawrence: how are you doing ma'am? i met you earlier there was a lot of talk about the manufacturing but it should have been more about it.

exchange yesterday. >> yeah. did a big speech on the economic policy and big plans for the future. we have been traveling nonstop as of this last weekend i have done campaign events in 220-something cities and 39 states. >> ainsley: my gosh. >> 69 cities and 25 states this month alone. >> ainsley: who works harder you or brian? >> never sleeps. >> steve: are you doing that, mr. speaker, because donald trump says no tax on overtime? clearly you are working overtime. >> right. he and i both are traveling nonstop. it's very inspiring. i sat down with him last week sometime. we were in the same place at the same time. and he said my schedule is full. i told the team fill it every hour of every day all the way through the election. he said, mike, we can't leave anything on the field we would have regret if we had done one more city and one more event. for him to have that kind of stamina is inspiring to all of us. >> steve: last night was the big vice presidential debate. >> yes. >> steve: we were talking in the green room a moment ago about the moderators and the job cbs did. watch this clip, if you missed last night, where they said they

cause of death for americans 18 to 49. trafficking the fact that j.d. pointed out so well. they have lost all of these children who came across the border. >> ainsley: yeah. >> if a republican administration had done that, it's all you would see every day. >> steve: of course. >> they try to bury it. j.d. was so good last night because he brought answers, solutions. he talked about policies. he showed his depth and he came across as just being very reasonable and likeable. i just thought he was at his best. he did a great job. >> ainsley: what do you think about this port strike? day two now. going to effect all families across the country if we don't resolve this soon. what should biden and kamala harris be doing to resolve it? >> well, they need to ensure that these parties stay at the table and negotiate in good faith and get to the end of this thing. they have had this sort of hands off approach. and that weakness is going to exacerbated the problem. donald trump has pointed out the last couple of days, this is a direct result. one more direct result of bidenomics. of the inflation. these, you know, dock workers, port workers feel like they

can't feed their families. everybody in america feels that. >> brian: gina raimondo says not following it. the secretary of transportation is drilling governor walz on what to expect in the debate. >> look, this administration and all the cabinet officials have failed in every measure. and everybody can see that this election is about a contrast that the answer the solution, the ideas that j.d. has put forward, and the fact that walz could not stand there and answer this simple question. if kamala harris has all these great ideas and you guys could do all of this, why hasn't she done that the last four years? they cannot answer that. >> steve: joe biden we have heard him a million times, he is the world's most prounion in the history. union a lot of power. they have it now. unfortunately for his vice president, our vice president, kamala harris, this comes at a politically precarious time. the longer this goes, the worst for her when stuff starts costing more or drying up.

>> yes. and the latest numbers are very encouraging for our side because the democratic party and kamala harris have the lowest level of support from union workers in the history of polling. in 2020, joe biden was up by 19 points. >> steve: right. >> among union members. she is up by 9. it's a perilous position she is. in let's see how this resolves. it's doing real damage to the economy, to people. it's going to make costs go up for all these hard-working families. >> brian: mr. speaker, do you think you should be doing something to get these men and women back to work? this is national security, isn't it? >> well, it is. and the taft-hartley act is part of the law that the president has the ability to invoke that. congress doesn't have much say in these things but we will continue to hammer the point they have to get back to work. >> this is a perilous time for the country. we are still reeling on the heels of hurricane helene and damage done. iran firing on. this is emblematic of the biden-harris and what they have

done to the country. >> ainsley: approaching the anniversary of october 7th and what happened to israel. they are fighting revenge. took out of leader of hezbollah and hamas. took out five other leaders of hamas. they used the pagessers, they blew up pagers and a lot of the terrorists killed as well. they are fighting back. but yesterday there were 200 missiles that were launched into israel. there was that attack. >> steve: of iran. it's so crazy. >> incredible. >> ainsley: what's your reaction to this and what can we do? >> let me point back to the president and vice president. they have put us in this situation tried to appease iran with policies. they have empowered them. they have not enforced the sanctions. that's what allowed iran to have the resource these are doing right now. it's a very dangerous situation. we have to stand unequivocally with israel right now. the biden administration has tried to play both sides. they tried to apiece iran and that's what has gotten us in this dangerous situation. we are on the verge of world war iii. it's true. most dangerous time since world war ii. and it's because of the failed

policies. we have got to project peace through strength. i think j.d. hammered that point so well last night. you have to have a strong leader in the white house. that's what donald trump will bring back. and it can't happen soon enough. >> brian: let's think about this. nobody wants world war iii. did you notice the gulf state, saudi arabia. no one is condemning israel. it's fascinating. everybody knows iran is the problem. >> of course. >> brian: iran is threatening to assassinate president trump. switching planes and all types of gymnastics in order to not get killed. they hacked into his website. now through the houthi rebels telling the houthi rebels where our ships are to take us out of the red sea. they on commerce. that is war on us. they killed three of our guys in syria. that is war on us. why are we sitting there saying de-escalate? what other things do we have to do to understand we are under attack by this nation who are now have the ayatollah cowering in some hole somewhere? >> we have had four years of weakness that's been predicted on the world stage. our allies are nervous, everybody is fearful.

with. >> brian: back with a fox news alert. israel's military ground operations in southern lebanon. penetrated forward as more troops are sent to battle hezbollah and israel is promising revenge after iran fired roughly 200 ballistic missiles and all-time record at tel aviv overnight. trey yingst joins us live from the israeli port city of high of fall. trey, what could you tell us about the ground incursion? >> yeah, brian. well, we do have some breaking

news for you this hour. we are learning there was an incident in southern lebanon and at least one israeli soldier was killed in a fight with hezbollah. there are very few details at this hour. but the israelis are expected to update on that later today. this comes after a massive, large scale ballistic missile attack overnight that was launched towards israel from iran. we understand more than 180 ballistic missiles soared through the skies of this country. some of them were intercepted. others slamming into the ground below. israel's advanced missile defense system, the arrow 3 intercepted some of the fire. video circulating online shows significant impacts and craters caused by the missiles. one palestinian man was killed and at least two israelis injured. iranians said they used new hypersonic missiles and responding to the killing of hezbollah leader hassan nasrallah and hen i can't. gathered to what the response

would be to this attack. reports say it will be significant. iran-backed hezbollah launched more than 100 rockets into israel today including targeting this city 6 haifa while israel continues to target the lebanese capital of beirut with airstrikes. tracking another security story out of israel. shooting south of tel aviv that killed seven people. police say the attackers arrived from the west bank and targeted a light rail train. a lot of moving parts here but, again, israeli security officials do remain on high alert. and they are dealing with multiple fronts at the same time. brian? >> brian: and, yet, still on the osceola. trey, thanks so much. meanwhile, just hours after iran launches missiles towards israel senator j.d. vance calling out the biden-harris administration foreign policy failures at last night's vice presidential debate. you yourself said iran is as close to a nuke already weapon today as they have ever been and governor walz you blame donald trump. who has been the vice president for the last three and a half years?

i think the debate last night is exactly fits is with this issue. reality versus fantasy. the reality j.d. vance reslayed we have been dealing with invasion, dealing with world chaos. these are all realities. the fantasy is walz is trying to do two things. say they are not real and then also pretend like kamala harris wasn't there for the three and a half years. and that's where vance had a master class throughout last night. and on this topic of foreign policy for sure is he had both the style and the substance. he passed the volume on or volume off test. either way you felt like he was calm, complicated and in control. walz, especially on this first issue, he was halting at his words. you look -- you saw how nervous he was. do you think the mull also a, xi jinping, do you think the rulers in of the world are going to be bothered harris-walz and antony blinken's cute little podesta? of course not.
