north carolina, more than 200 are dead, hundreds listed as missing as we speak at this hour. helene's wrath relentless. a living nightmare for millions across the south. most deadly hurricane since katrina. we watch the devastating fallout. back on the job. striking dock workers reaching a tentative deal to open up u.s. ports. we got the jobs number for september. 254,000 jobs added. this after the fed cut rates by half a point. how does this all factor in now? we'll look at that as we begin. dana has the day off. i'm bill hemmer live in new york city. hello to you. >> good to be with you on a job day. can't wait to dig into that. i'm sandra smith and this is "america's newsroom." the tentative dock workers would
6:02 am
give them a 60% raise. that pushes the deadline past election day. >> bill: convenient. that and the jobs report are good for kamala harris. the economy is still seen as a liability in the election. >> it is human nature to attribute your current economic situation to the people in office for better or worse. and today american households are facing much higher prices than in overall -- wages haven't kept up. so, you know, in many ways the biden-harris administration, they get blamed for this but also contributed to it. >> sandra: the economy remains the top issue for voters. poll after poll shows former president donald trump is more trusted to fix it. >> bill: team fox coverage. we have analysis. mark meredith reports from the white house. olivia hu at the labor department with the new number.
6:03 am
how do you score the jobs number and what from it? >> good morning, bill and sandra. 254,000 jobs coming in, much hotter than the expected 140,000 jobs added in the month of september. this report is bucking the trend of what we've seen out of the labor department in terms of the labor market for this year. we've seen a cooling labor market which is what policymakers have tried to engineer as they are engineering a soft landing here. this report at 254,000 would ordinarily be a very positive report for the government and biden administration but it should raise questions about what the federal reserve president powell can do following this hotter than expected report? he is in a position trying to rein in inflation. a report should raise questions whether the fight on inflation is over. when you have more jobs added to the economy, that is going to stir spending. that is more money flowing
6:04 am
through the system and pushes upward pressure on prices, not good for the everyday american as we've heard so far. he has so far just a moment ago, bill, he had that jumbo rate cut in the last meeting of 50 basis points and wants another 50 basis points for the year. after this report there should be questions whether he will take a look and analyze the data and be data dependent and maybe rest on a 25 basis point cut or maybe conversation on whether or not we have any rate cut whatsoever. one final point about this jobs report is i think we should look at the quality of the jobs being added. we're seeing a lot of them added in the food services sector and government jobs. these are not really the types of jobs we want to be seen added to the economy. we want to see good-paying jobs. those are low wages. go to fox business for more analysis. >> sandra: i just checked out the latest from the fed watch
6:05 am
tool. it accurately predicted the last 50 basis point cut. right now the chances of that happening again because that was the anticipation, have now shrunk to a 12% chance that will happen. that is looking unlikely following this report. meanwhile, lydia, port workers strike is over. are the workers back to the job today? what happens next here? >> they were told to get back to the job. i've been keeping in touch with rank and file members. they've been instructed to get back to a job. not on the picket lines this morning. the port of new york and new jersey one container port is remaining closed for the day, not sure why. it seems that the picket lines and strike is over and expect them to return. as you laid out now 90 days to figure out the rest of their labor agreement. we're resting on a 62% wage hike over the next six years as their tentative agreement. plighting the difference. the union and employers were settling at before this agreement.
6:06 am
nowner they're have to look at the sticky issue, what do they do about automation? much more difficult. they have 90 days to do it. we'll see if we're back on the picket lines in january. i don't know. >> bill: a lot to analyze there. we'll get to it. lydia hu, labor department for us today. >> sandra: vice president harris failing to get another union endorsement. the group of firefighters backing biden in 2020. things are looking different this time. >> good morning to you. this is the second time that a major union which backed president biden in the last cycle has chosen not to endorse any candidate in this race. both trump and harris campaigns sought the support of the international association of firefighters. the iaff says it will sit this one out. the group putting out a statement late last night writing this decision that we
6:07 am
took very seriously is the best way to preserve and strengthen our unity. we encourage members and eligible voters to make their voices heard in the election. the teamsters union also chose not to endorse anyone in the race. this was interesting because the teamsters had also been meeting with both candidates and trying to get whatever they could out the door. "politico" writes this could be a sign of trouble for democrats. they write today the slights from the teamsters and a few other labor groups have harris supporters on edge since trump has succeeded in carve into the party's advantage with rank and file members. this morning we've learned the v.p. will soon campaign with former president obama rallying supporters together in pittsburgh. obama expected to hold more events for harris between now and election day. the vice president is in michigan today. the latest polls showing her with a slight lead but one also within the margin of error. still president biden said he has all the confidence that she will prove victorious in
6:08 am
november. >> [inaudible question] >> president biden: she ising to do fine. >> trump is in the south today making stops in north carolina and georgia. his visit notable as he is set to meet with georgia governor brian kemp, someone openly critical of in the past but eager to be meeting with and seen with. trump set to hold a major rally tomorrow. it will be in butler, pennsylvania. the same site as the shooting back in july. sandra. >> sandra: thank you. >> bill: mary kathryn hamm joins us on a friday. you heard mark's report about the firefighters union, teamsters union about a week ago. here is a moment with jeff flock on fox business on with maria yesterday morning at the port. i think it was in new jersey, i do believe. roll it. >> i wonder if they support kamala harris. >> i could ask that question. she wanted to know how many
6:09 am
folks support vice president harris. not any hands, no hands. >> wow. >> sandra: wow. >> bill: i don't know what to take from that. i don't think those guys knew that that question was coming. and no one wanted to step up and stand out, mary kathryn. >> yeah, you don't know what to make of that particular clip but you can look to the other data points, the teamsters and firefighters union. firefighters in particular are interesting because this is a male demographic, blue collar, often in urban centers and unionized. in 2020 they went with biden because he had union ced. union rank and file are moving toward republican voting. a fact for the last several
6:10 am
cycles. she is not bridging that gap. biden and harris were happy to side with the union boss in the longshoremen disagreement who is out there saying we'll cripple you in a time when people needs good to be moving not only for the cost of living but the devastation in north carolina and eastern tennessee. when you are standing with that most vocal person, maybe it doesn't go well for regular blue collar workers. maybe it doesn't sound great outside of that union and to other unions. i think it ain't great news for her for sure. i think the problem for the harris campaign is that they are arguing on this longshoremen disagreement, they are arguing that donald trump is chaos and that your cost of living is fine. in this case look, we had three days of stoppage. good they went back to work for her politically. however, there is still damage. costs will go up. you don't pause the economy for three days and nothing happens to the goods and prices. people will pay a price. there was some chaos and cuts
6:11 am
against both of their arguments. >> sandra: we're reporting that former president barack obama is expected to hit the campaign trail late next week for kamala harris. the first stop is thursday in pittsburgh. perhaps this is a sign of what we'll hear from him on the trail. rewind to the dnc and this is what he said about the years under trump. listen. >> we do not need four more years of bluster and bumbling and chaos. we have seen that movie before and we all know that the sequel is usually worse. america is ready for a new chapter. america is ready for a better story. we are ready for the president kamala harris. >> sandra: you have to think it is an effort to boost favorability. the latest on that out of our fox news polling september 13th to 16th mary, shows her with a
6:12 am
49% favorable, 51% unfavorable rating. mary kathryn. >> former president obama is a great speaker but kamala harris is the sequel to the current administration. she is serving in the current administration. she is the chapter we're on. she cannot turn the page in the way that obama, although effectively speaking, is saying that she can. i think that's what voters, including these labor union members, are saying. they are seeing that. they are seeing you are not telling me how you will be anything different. you rarely talk. we don't know much about you. i don't feel like i can trust you. i lived four years under trump and four years under biden-harris and the trump years felt better to a lot of people. their rhetoric is running up against reality and a contest between the two. >> bill: she took one question all week, i think. maybe a podcast i missed. one thing about pennsylvania. we're watching on election night. you can understand how union workers in pennsylvania and
6:13 am
energy workers in pennsylvania could go for blue collar joe biden but we'll see whether or not they can go for kamala harris out of california. thanks for coming on, mary kathryn. we'll talk again next week. good analysis, thank you. >> dana: tomorrow former president trump as you heard from mark meredith is set to hold a rally in butler, pennsylvania. the secret service says it has been working to make sure the site is secure. pennsylvania congressman mike kelly says it has been totally revamped. >> lawrence, when you look at it now. i was there yesterday looking at how much different it is now the way it is protected as it wasn't protected on july 13th. there is an envelope around there. no longer two command center. one command center. the ability to use frequencies that make sense and communicate. totally different than july 13th. >> sandra: the former president will be joined by elon musk.
6:14 am
>> bill: that will be must see tv. there is a measure of drama that will be captivated in this appearance in butler, pennsylvania tomorrow. we'll all relive the memories on july 13th. >> sandra: a show of strength of the secret service. >> bill: we have this. huge story, folks. everyday americans risking their own lives to save their neighbors stranded in the aftermath of hurricane helene. we'll talk to some extraordinary heroes who are pitching in by the day. you will meet them coming up next. >> sandra: israel extending evacuation orders in lebanon as the scope of its ground operation appears to be widening. >> bill: venezuelan gang tightening its grip on chicago. what's happening there? fox news talked to people say the threat in violence grows in that city by the day.

6:21 am
there. zeb, you were the one who saved an 11 day old baby and an 87-year-old mother. what happened there? >> it was all of us. first big rescue mission, there were several. it started with the baby. it was a call that we got, a stress message from save our allies. so we took that call between charlie and john, their teams. >> i reached out to my state team on the ground. didn't know the exact location. my paramedic paul was actually a few minutes away from there and able to rush over there and stabilize the baby to get ready for life flight while the rest of the team sent us images. that way mark could put the helicopter down. charlie was doing the coordinating. we grabbed that baby, mom and grandma through them in the helicopter and mark flew us to the asheville airport avant
6:22 am
doctors and nurses were there on stand by to save the baby's life. i got confirmation today and charles in contact with the mom. they were sending us photos and pictures and videos of the baby. it is good, healthy, and it has been on our minds. the baby is healthy. >> bill: it is an awesome story. let me stick with you for a moment. looking at the social media posts. you said you are looking for reflections on the ground as you are flying in helicopters trying to spot people with s.o.s. written on the ground. remarkable stuff. you are ticked off. you don't see the support down there on behalf of the government. tell me what you experienced. what is your story? >> we're looking for s.o.s. carved in mud how we found the 87-year-old woman out of oxygen. weak leadership in north carolina from the federal government. it takes my strong leadership in florida. if it wasn't for florida sending us up there that wouldn't have

traffickers. they'll come up and come to shelters and homes. so that's one thing we look out for while we're here. we also have several trained disaster response technicians on our team. >> bill: well done. mark, you are flying the helicopter. what do you see down there? >> seeing devastation like you've never seen. people trapped, roads are demolished. no way in and out. the only lifeline to us, no communication. the only lifeline is us coming in there either flying the sick out or either us taking in supplies. so it's just a lot. i've never seen devastation like this. >> bill: i'm sure. zeb, how do we dig ourselves out of this? >> it will be a long recovery. >> bill: will it get worse before we really turn the corner? >> i think -- we're seeing a shift. we came out here on our own looking to save lives.
6:25 am
and so that phase is primarily over unless there are more mudslides. now we're checking on people. making sure people that are cut off from the world have the supplies they need and making sure they get what they need. right now the biggest thing we see that is a need is star links. we need out of the box that can run so these people if remote valleys can communicate with neighbors. pregnant women, sick men, people that need to be in communication. some of these people don't want to leave. they're a proud people here, rightly so and we need to be good stewards of the country to get what they need to live the way they want to live. >> bill: with the reporters down there we have listened to them all week. the folks there feel like america forgot about them. we don't want that to be the case. star link. i know musk shipped 150 units earlier in the week. if you are saying they need more. >> we need 500. >> bill: i worked with star link. it is a remarkable product and
6:26 am
if you are saying 500 is needed? why is that, because of the mountains? >> we're not even talking about putting them in the hands of individuals. i wish we had a map but there are hundreds of ems stations, emt stations and fire departments still standing and running on generators. they don't have any access to the outside world. if we can provide each of little communities with star link they can talk to each other and that's what is needed now and the road forward. outside of that is really just the cleanup and the search for unfortunately what is probably the remains of human beings that didn't make it through this tragic event. >> they will have to have -- the generators won't last forever. they need fuel. we spent 20 years in afghanistan similar to where we are at right now mountainous terrain. we have a lot of experience moving resources. no swing load operations are

up their own operations and actively recruiting kids and teens in the neighborhood. >> only the matter of time before things escalate because they are moving into our neighborhood. different areas, different guys, different so-called organizations or gangs and they moving in on the blocks and trying to emulate them or doing the same thing they are doing. >> that growing frustration extends beyond gang members. folks in the community tell us the crime issues they are dealing with have only gotten worse since the venezuelans and tda moved in. at this point, violence has not broken out between the gangs but we're told tensions are simmering and that one wrong move by the venezuelans could potentially lead to an all-out gang war. >> as far as the news media trying to sensationalize something like that. it would be a bloodbath. they wouldn't have to. >> and everyone who lives in
6:49 am
these areas would be caught up in that bloodbath. folks we spoke to said given how deeply rooted chicago's gang culture is going all the way back to al capone tda will have a much more difficult time moving in and completely taking over here than they will in other cities in america. sandra. >> sandra: unbelievable. garrett, thank you. >> bill: so the september jobs report is out as of 90 minutes ago. came in hotter than expected. high number, 254,000 jobs added. unemployment ticked down to 1.4%. the chief market strategist and president of mtb capital with us here. before we get to trump and harris making their pitch this week what do you make about the numbers? >> i thought there would be more red flags and a communist pair parade in that report. we had a wise dispersion of what the expectations were. we got 254.
6:50 am
there is not one data point in here that i can point to that is not good. 150,000 people come into the labor force, 430,000 jobs added. some of those in areas catch-up sectors from covid. so healthcare, education, and then the one thing that really stands out to me is wage growth. slightly accelerated. this is key for the fed. if inflation is still stubborn you need to make sure employees and everyday americans can afford and absorb the price hikes. >> bill: donald trump in michigan yesterday. >> starting on day one of my new administration we'll end inflation and make america affordable again. it is not affordable. [cheers and applause] they kill you. they killed you with their spending, a combination of spending and their stupid energy policies. >> bill: your take on that. >> energy is key now especially with the escalating tensions in the mideast. oil, people will say it makes 8%
6:51 am
of cpi but indirectly involved with every good and service that we use. oil is key to bringing down inflation. trump is the only candidate that would have energy independence in america. no questions about it. kamala can flip-flop whether she is for fracking or not but she will be anti-energy and it will be inflationary. >> sandra: her pitch to create this opportunity economy. >> a lot of my work in terms of building and growing the economy has focused on small businesses. and my vision overall is we need to build an opportunity economy in which we increase opportunity for all, including small business owner. >> sandra: she said it in almost every interview she has done. the few she has. the opportunity economy. she is being challenged with the notion she is in the white house. why is this not happening now? >> why haven't you done it already. sounds like a great sound bite
6:52 am
but learn from my grandmother said watch what they do, not what they say. she hasn't created any opportunity. the policies eliminate opportunity. you want to give small businesses a chance? reduce the regulatory burden. you want to give businesses overall a chance? reduce taxes, not more. especially at a time when you have an administration collecting record tax revenues and spending out of control. >> bill: when asked whether or not trump or harris is better on the economy. here is what you have. up five, seven, 11, nine. 13. >> i think those are understated. >> bill: understated? >> in terms of how they are skewed towards trump. what experience does harris have? she can't point to anything she has done to suggest she will have a big strong impact on the economy. trump has to avoid saying this is the anticipation of me winning the white house. look at my past track record and
6:53 am
compare that to weekend at bernie's and weekend at biden's where no one is there minding the white house. >> sandra: and promising free stuff. she did that on the debate stage. >> this is buying votes. a popularity contest at best but you have to look at the policies. we live with the repercussions of this. >> bill: 32 days. >> sandra: fox news alert to this scene. helene survivors outraged as the federal government budgets millions to migrants while fema is strapped. how they are coping with this storm coming up. fox news speaking to the taiwanese ambassador to the u.s. why they're watching the presidential election here so closely next. >> u.s. election has far more repercussions than just u.s. domestic issues. it affects the whole world.
