>> great to be working with you. >> this is "america reports." search and rescue efforts are ongoing. the death toll continues to climb. at least 224 have lost their lives across six states. hundreds of thousands are still in the dark as crews worked to restore power even still at this hour. we will speak with the operations manager of an energy company on what they are doing now to get the lights back on. >> brian has a preview of the trip through the storm ravaged region. let's get to madison. she is on the ground. you have been telling incredible stories all day. what are you seeing now and is any progress being made? >> some of the roads are starting to open. more and more people are getting cell service back. perhaps some more power but the biggest need is water.

as you can see, some of these areas of north carolina are completely leveled. we are standing at what used to be a mobile home park. most of these homes completely crushed. some floated across the street. i want to show you more things we are seeing, a closer look. we are starting to see people's personal items. as you can see, some family photos. who knows how old these are, what these meant to people. you can only hope that once they return to their now destroyed homes that they are able to recover something. we spoke to the owner of this mobile home lot and he tells us he believes everyone was able to get out safely but they are without everything. all they took was the shirt off their back and he tells us they don't have a lot of money so he is not sure how they are going to be able to recover from this.

take a listen. >> this is unreal the way this has happened. the amount of water. it is going to take two or three years before things get back to sort of normal. >> of the mobile home you're looking at is across the street from where i was just standing. we talked to the owner and he says when he came back, the water picked this up and moved it across the street. when it comes to federal help, we are hearing from some people who live here that they have seen fema on the ground. some people say they have not but others have already applied for assistance. it is just a matter of when that is going to come in and they want the help and mean it but they are not relying on it. it has been a situation of neighbors helping neighbors h here.
