there. we begin with madison scarpino is light at elk river airport in north carolina. volunteers are trying to get desperately needed supplies to cut off disaster areas. madison? >> hello. a massive volunteer effort going on here right now. i will get to that in a second period but, just talking to people who survived to lean over the next few days. still trying to process everything. the to see what they can salvage out of the destruction. i've got to say the biggest thing we are hearing from everyone is how much the community came together during all of this, listen. >> the biggest lesson i have taken away from it is when we can relate to each other person to person. human being to human being without judgment. you can see all the goodness that's out there.
9:03 am
the volunteer efforts going on right now one of many organizations doing stuff like this. i am told so far over 250,000 pounds of supplies have been dropped off to hard-hit areas from right here. these are volunteers from all over the country. most of them are ex- military. as a somewhat roads are beginning to open there still people stuck in the small mountain towns. all of these supplies is being delivered there from water, to food, some life-saving medicine and equipment we know there's still a lot of people stuck and injured. now, some of the volunteers are using their own personal equipment or machinery from tractors, to small planes, helicopters. but when it comes to the biggest needs at this point in time, clean water is still one of them. a lot of volunteers are dropping off start link for people who do not have felt service. the latest thing we are hearing about is a cold front that is expected to come to this area
9:04 am
soon. some people who lost everything only have the clothes they had on their back the date the bad flooding started. a big priority is delivering out blankets and warm clothing for people who are stuck. especially the children. arthel: is a wonderful to see the community come together. that is what we do as americans. we help each other out. i madison scarpino live in banner elk, north carolina thank you. just before it was good for the hard-hit communities in the western part of north carolina. that's where crews are trying to restore power and reach those residents who remain cut off. the many small towns and communities in the mountain area but "fox weather" correspondent brandy campbell is in north carolina with the latest from there. hi brandy. >> hey eric at the somber week here across the region with at least 232 people confirmed dead because of helene peart right right now search and rescue was still on going.

a new storm the gulf of mexico, that is milton. thankfully we are not in the direct path of the here. eric: hopefully milton will not affect their likely. brandy, thank you. another storm is forming in the gulf of mexico. it looks like it will hit florida this week. meteorologist adam klotz is tracking tropical storm milton and that whether it center right now. how's it looking? >> is not looking like it's going to be a good start for florida. may be the most powerful we will see the entire season. here's the set up currently there's arty rain currently falling across florida. this is not associated with it is going to prime it. it's been so wet over the last season really over the summer to the spring the western coast of florida is way over on their totals it's raining right now so when the storm hits all this additional rain will have nowhere to go so flooding is going to be a major concern.
9:08 am
milton is 65 manner when sittig off the coast of mexico. moving to the east/southeast is really hardly moving at this point we are expecting to pick up and get moving over the next day or so and really moving by tuesday. we are looking at a landfall sometime on wednesday. the cone is fairly wide. the middle of it basically tampa but there's room for this to wiggle a little bit either way. what you are seeing with the strong winds as a major hurricane that's going to bring a wall of water with it. storm surges when she big story or talk about rain is coming down across florida. five -- 8 inches pretty much for the entire state but if you're not right up along the coast what makes landfall flooding will be a concern. wherever ultimately this does go storm surge is going to a big concern as well. tamp it may be right around the bull's-eye but will be watching in the next couple of days. arthel: residents have to pay attention to local authorities and all of the instructions given.
9:09 am
>> i am searching there will be evacuation orders not exactly where it's going this is one and you're going to have to listen to this. arthel: adam klotz thank you. eric: size and scope wide spread really how do residents rebuild undercover? under publican senator ted joins us now. senator, good to see you. our hearts and our sympathies are with you so closely heartfelt with the citizens of your state should. what is the greatest challenge that you face? and you folks are facing right now in terms of difficulties? >> again, weather's getting ready to change and we are going to see temperatures drop. some people have lost everything they don't have houses, they do have a close, this is a tough mountain people. they are always ready for wi winter. but not if they've lost everything. that's probably going to one of the upcoming challenges with the temperature is dropping. the others federal coordination. very slow the government was

caught flat-footed by an administration did not come out of the gate. we are 11 days into this. just now seeing the 18th airborne corps which has been awaiting. we were ready for them to be here. then the 82nd and hundred and first. they are here now and we are grateful for that. it is too slow for the biden and governments with rapid response a lot flat-footed were grateful for the resources being on the ground now. eric: would you have liked to seen how could it have been handled better from your view? >> if you hits and misses of fema being here but we did not see it in every county. we did not know who those people were. what i did see and i want to flip around for what i'm thankful for and that is the volunteer organizations and individual volunteers. we brought clothing, diapers, it was amazing to see. to see that coordinated by the local counties like henderson county to be a distribution over

so much western north carolina. up in boone, samaritans purse the whole region solving problems around the world it was htheir own backyard that was hit they're first on the scene in so many areas the baptist one mission with the yellow shirts they're feeding people to distribute food. so well organized and donations to them are well spent and well organized. much should be thankful for. i heard a bit earlier on your show people to be thankful for the neighbors and their help. i love to s sink sing north kils helping north carolinians. i am grateful now for the 18th airborne corps being here. we had to push hard to get them here in to get everyone to work together. but now they are in theater the doing a good job and were grateful for them. before you hit one of inspirational themes here. in this tragedy and disaster people helping each other. went to costco jammed his small airplane full of stuff and flew it up to try to help.
9:12 am
are you surprised were saying this? and are they doing it may be what the some government agencies should have had pre-position on the ground? >> we would have loved to see them there is a turf war for a while we were able to say hey, these people are trying to help it we want to coordinate we want it safe. as an aviator have a special appreciation for them. we saw dozens and dozens of helicopters come appear coordinated by operation airdrop. we are grateful for them for their out of texas and have people on the ground and that's doing a great job of coordinating lots of air assets in a very safe manner. we are very appreciative of them. they would come in and pick up supplies and then they would take them out to small airfields either in helicopter for their drink extracts they're bringing in start links another hero with elon musk and donald trump doing that. we are so thankful for people being entrepreneurial, quick to react and eventually the government resources get here. the biden administration was caught flat-footed. but now the people are working

together, it is getting better. but still a long way to go. eric: see the damage especially in small towns. we seem to be in a new era where they forecast a hurricane that hits the panhandle or the big bandiband down in florida. and then this spreads out six states. we sell this in your estate if you years ago hurricane hits down south flooding, hundreds of miles away. are we prepared for this new era of torrential rain? how do we prepare for that? people think it's down a floor but take a look at what's happening in your state. >> if it's like a wa war you als prepare for the last in always prepare for the last hurricane for this and was different this was a combination of 1999 hurricane floyd in eastern north carolina and hurricane hugo in 1989 which came from charleston up to the north carolina mountains. had the wind speed of one and the water of other in its devastation like we've never seen before. people say it's thousand or five any event i don't know i hope we

don't see it in our lifetime and her grandchildren's lifetime one day. this is something like we've never seen before. super finally what would you suggest what your proposals up repositioning the supplies having more attention to the small communities because once his gets a flooded out in those bridges are out you cannot get to those places other than as you pointed out in a helicopter and perhaps small planes. >> one of the frustrations is kamala harris up $42 billion and years to get rural satellites and rule communications establish and did not get one household connected. in a matter of a button click with a phone call from donald trump, elon musk had hundreds of start links delivered on the ground. that's the kind of speed we need to operate at the end that is what's happening. i'm grateful for the volunteers for the volunteers, starlet, elon musk and donald trump picking up a big in that phone call but that's what we need is the thinking in northern carolina it takes all of us no squabbling, no political grandson who got a lot of work
9:15 am
ahead and got months and years ahead. we need entrepreneurial thinking and better coordination from private groups and from individuals and from the federal government. i think we need real leadership. i think at the end of the day that is what we need is really strong entrepreneurial minded non- bureaucratic thinking to get the cell for the future. eric: you were affected a bit not too bad that you're doing okay? >> i'm on the eastern side of these mountains. we are in the foothills we get flooded from the river. but we are used to it we just need to go out and fix a few offenses and most the time we are okay but nothing compared to what i've seen on the ground in western north carolina. super our thoughts and prayers are certainly with the people of western north carolina, all of your state and what you're doing senator of north carolina. thank you for joining us. and of course fox corporation, made a donation to the red cross hurricane elaine relief efforts in. we continue to be an annual disaster giving program partner. this enables the red cross to respond immediately to disasters
